I am so thankful I was reared by a father who is mechanical, and that I am an autodidact like him and his father. Over the summer I did preventative maintenance on my 911. A shop would have billed me some $16,000 for the work I did. My cost was $1800.
I pay about $300 for an oil change at an independent shop. It’s worth the money to know I’m not over filling the oil pan and I don’t risk mis-threading anything or breaking plastic clips. The idea that you would go to your Indy mechanic or dealer and ask them to reset the oil change indicator is preposterous. “Hi, I’m here to have you finish a job I don’t have tools for.” Right. Also, if you ding the back deck with the ratchet handle or break a clip it’s game over on any savings. Also, getting your car to a shop is good maintenance. They see things you don’t. I like to DIY but when I went from a 996 to a 991 where you can’t see the engine, I decided to pay the piper. I would love to save hundreds and replace the air filter myself (I hear it’s $600 and involves bumper removal). But for the same reasons above I’ll pay to get it done. Breaking clips and wires removing the bumper seems likely. The worst thing is crawling back to the mechanic having broken the car yourself. And they don’t want to know how many RUclips videos you watched before you needed their help.
I get that it's supposed to be a premium brand but the dealerships rip you off charging $500 for this amount of work IMO. This is a reason that "right to repair" is such a big issue. We should be able to reset our own computer reminders easily as well.
Other than electrical connectors. There is no place for plastic in an engine compartment. Porsche use of plastic is the opposite of sound engineering. And yet, Porsche charges a premium for a car made with an increasing number of inferior parts.
I love these tech sessions
Thanks for watching!
Clearly filmed around Halloween. Mr. Skelleton making an appearance. Nice touch!
Indeed!
Thanks for the informative video and the two Porsche dealers in San Diego charge $650 each for an oil change - ridiculously high.
Just wondering how long it will be before dealers start charging DIYers just to reset the oil life indicator?
With the 992 generation, oil service indicator has to be reset with a PIWIS computer, so DIYer can’t reset it now.
@@paulmoran4095wow that is nuts. On a 991.2 sounds like something else may work like a basic obd2 unit?
I love that orange!
Us too!

It's a great feeling to be able to do things yourself!
992.1 DIY maintenance in the future, please!
It’s the same engine basically so same process.

We appreciate your perspective!
6 or 60 mm socket?
This was so great, thanks! 💯 Cheers from Clearwater 🌴🤙 111124
Appreciate the shoutout from Clearwater!

In hindsight, using a coupe would have been better. Also skipping resetting the oil change interval was sort of a cop-out.
Sure looks a lot like our 2016 VW GTI oil pan and plug. I did not know they were one time use. Oops. I'll get a new plug next time.
Why 0W 40?
OEM spec
I thought a 986 was a pain, apparently, it's not.
986s are very simple to do an oil change on.
Man that oil was dark...
It sure was!

Appreciate tthe effort, but I couldn't see much. Perhaps do it with a coupe. Not a very good video.
Thanks for the feedback!
