  • I talk about the main reasons why fisherman fail at catching fish and being consistent. This pertains to freshwater and salt water fisherman. My journey as a fisherman has come full circle and what I have realized is to get it simple and learn the technique first! '

Well said. I was taught basics by my grandfather on how to fish. When I asked when's the best time to catch fish? He answered: when you have a body of water, a pole (back then we used cane poles) and Bait. Through the years I've found that to be true in all my fishing experience. Its not about how much or how expensive the gear is. The fish don't know the difference. Thanks for sharing and I agree with your entire video.

Thank you...I’ve been racking my brain over and over and over...hard to calm down, and realize that I don’t need the blue yonder and “x” professional fisherman’s favorite signature lure. Really brought me back.

My great Grandpa bought me my first fishing pole when I was four, so I've been fishing for about 30 years now, and funny thing is it's absolutely true, you just come full circle. Once you've got the basics down that's all you need. Now I find what's even more important than the gear, is paying attention to the conditions where you're fishing like wind, tides, moon phases, etc. If you know that and have a solid foundation on fundamentals you're golden.

Great subject! I've fished freshwaterall my life and got into the "gotta have the latest and greatest". Fished bass tournaments for several years. It actually was getting to where it wasn't fun anymore. I slowed down, stopped fishing tournaments, got back to the basics, and am loving it all over again! Nothing like finding a bream bed and watching one eat a cricket and pull a bobber down, or feeling a crappie tap on a jig! :)

Another good one Captain. Taught myself to bowhunt and fish. We can make it as complicated or as simple as we want. The marketing departments certainly are good at what they do. I'm somewhat proof of that at times. Whatever floats our boats. When I was bowhunting I had a compound bow with all sorts of this and that on it. I was drawing down on a deer and a simple peep sight tube broke on me and I missed the shot. I thought about exactly what you are saying here and I sold the bow and went to a traditional recurve bow and started enjoying the experience again.

Timely advice. Over the last few years, I have perfected my ability to not catch several inshore species. I don’t catch them as good as everyone around me isn’t catching them. Since I learned all I can about spending money to not catch them. It might be time to learn a little about catching. Thanks for the lesson.

I come from a Martial arts family as well of nation and world champions from my step dad down. You are correct on doing a technique 1,000 times. Oddly enough, he was a amazing fisherman who him and my mom had a 2nd house in little torch key ( on the south side of big pine / 26 miles from key West). So most of my fishing occurred learning in the keys. You are correct that you don't need fancy gear either. It is more understanding their environment and study their natural behaviors and prime feeding times. After that it all comes natural.

Excellent video! It all boils down to common sense. You could do one video just on the lack of common sense among red snapper fisherman. They congregate at anchor in large numbers around the same GPS number on a live bottom area that's many acres wide instead of drifting and finding more productive spots in the vicinity. The worst fisherman I ever fished with was a PhD with an I.Q. that was so high he couldn't catch fish. He routinely yanked circle hooks out of snapper mouths, was too cheap to buy from the bait boat and never had backup frozen bait. He lost more anchors than all other fishermen that I've ever known put together. He never grasped the concept of MBT - maximum bottom time and a fishing trip on his boat was an exercise in maximum frustration because you did little actual fishing. Thanks for the video.

You really hit it. Go out and spend $30 F'n dollars on one FREEKIN lure just to snag it on something, spend half of one day off of work trying to get it back (if it were a dollar lure I'd still try and get it back but wouldn't pull my hair out for it) and not catch a single fish because of it?!?!?! Not for me Senior! I'm way old school, have a lot of fun and catch my share without financing my tackle. Great video brother!

I got to say it depends on what kind of fishing you’re doing and the kind of fish you’re targeting, for example how would you handle a big fish if you’re using cheap gear? Definitely isn’t the same fishing in a lake than in the ocean, once you step into the deep water you gotta spend your money in good gear

We have an inlet, you go there and toss out fresh bait, you are guaranteed to catch red and black drum. Remote, low fishing pressure. Seen it out there so clear you could literally pick your fish and lob a shrimp in front of him and watch him pick it up. We quit long after our arms got sore of reeling. No bull reds, but every one a slot size keeper. Blacktips moved in after I foul hooked a black drum and he bled. We were surf fishing. Those sharks were like fighter jets, they'd hit a fish, stun it, and turn to eat it. They would surf a wave over the little bar into the slough. Craziest fishing day I ever had...

Dude, I’m from P-cola originally, all you need is a bait net. Regardless of what anyone tells you, the fish eat what bait is available in that location. It’s not rocket surgery. If you catch bull minnows, they’re eating that. If you catch finger mullet, they’re eating those. Drop the bait on a Carolina rig, and it’s game on.
