Dude I love ya. Thank you for this. This applies to real life as well. Life isn't all sunshine a and rainbows, it's gonna beat you down so hard and keep you there if you let it. +Diggerty 10 why not? that would be a good place to meet a VERY large amount of great players and different playstyles. go in with an appropriate mindset though, don't expect to beat everyone there.
Thanks. This really gave me inspiration. I can't count how many times I'll go on tilt on Anther's and at tourneys. It's always important to learn from your mistakes to make yourself better.
The problem is that we have a severe sense of what is good and bad, what is right and wrong, when in reality, both of these concepts exist together. Without any losers there would be no sense of winning, both are important, and while there is a hierarchy, a positive and negative side, that illusion does not mean that losing, failure, being bad at something, isn't going to lead to something else. We all as humans are not defined by perfection, we are defined by imperfection, by our flaws, yet we all strive to be the best, or to be perfect. The problem occurs when we start to see our flaws and we feel that we ourselves are bad because of them. Perfection itself is limitless, therefore its undefined. Without our flaws, we wouldn't really be anything. Our limits are what define us, shape us, give us meaning. We should accept failure just as we accept success. Make your mistakes work for you rather than the other way around. We all have habits and traits that carry beauty and ugliness, but the people who are truly strong, are the ones who can turn their weaknesses into strengths. By accepting who you are as a person, you have accepted that you can do anything that your limits allow you, which as seen by other human beings of the like, appears to form a world of understanding of its own. If you think of this in terms of videogames, every game has "flaws" that define it, but if we love and accept the game, these limitations whether they be physics or hardware, are what allows us to preform what we love doing. Find what limits you, and find a way to love it. This may sound kind of deep for a youtube comment (lol) but I always feel like too many of us see ourselves and others as good or bad rather than as people. We each have strengths and weaknesses, and while we might not all be who we want to be now, by accepting these things about us you can be the very best "you" there is.
DERyuga people also misunderstand thier limits a lot Human limits are above what a lot of people think People think that they can't be like pro players in football or videogames but when people see others who they would think that they won't succeed or that they don't have what it takes surpass them they think they're unnatural or one of a kind But every single one of us with work and determination can reach that level if not surpass it I know im probably saying nonsense but that's how i see it anyways
That One Punch Man outro tho Good message, shame that some people miss out on tournaments cause they don't think they're good enough. Some of the most fun I've have with this game has been goofing off in friendlies after the tournament has ended.
saw this in recommended section after feeling depressed about losing a lot. This really brightened up my day, and is telling me that I should always use my losses to my advantage. It's a ridiculous thing to say, but I will make sure I make it onto the pgr at some point.
This is almost exactly my situation. I study and follow the top players, and stay up to date in the meta. I understand that I will lose many times, and I generally take it in stride. My issue is I'm afraid that after all this time practicing and trying, when I get in the situation to fight these people who have more tourney experience (mind you none of my friends play with me cause they think I'll always win and there's no point, so now I only have For Glory, which I'm well aware isn't doing me any favors) they will scrub me and tell me I'm garbage. I have social anxiety and I've overcome a lot of it, but going to tournaments, where I know once I'm comfortable it'll be fun, I can't seem to jump into it. I feel lame asking more experienced players for advice, for help understanding tourney rules like counter picking and stage bans...This video really touched on all of this for me. I'm more passionate about Smash than any other game, and I'm itching to take it to the next level. Thank you for your words.
Thanks man, I needed this video. I lost a tournament at a party two months ago. I was in the semi-finals and the guy was trash talking me, I lost and I thought I would never play in tournaments again. But I realized he was just trying to get a rise out of me.
Keef, my homie and I love your channel. I want to say that I've been kinda scared to play in any tournament scene, but with what you said I feel like its the only way I'll get better than I am. Thank you man.
So here's something I thought of and it seems to help my drive to get better. Don't play tournaments or competitively to ONLY win, don't fear/enter that first tournament for the win/loss. The FIRST tournament you EVER enter is a placement, you should only focus on playing your best, not getting far. If you get far, that's great, but it's more of a test, a base-line to gauge your skill at the beginning. THEN you can enter the next tournament, your goal? To rank at least one placement higher than the last time. Once you beat the last tourney's placement, you've won, anything further is a bonus, a goal for next tournament. Because if you can beat the last tournament's placement, get a better "high score", then you are improving and THAT'S what's important.
I may not have a tourney scene where I live, but I can relate. I always saw myself as the best Smash player in my house, but when I started losing to my brother's Dedede, I started making excuses, claiming that "Dedede is OP" or my character sucks. But I haven't quit, because I realized that complaining about a problem won't make it go away. I have to treat every loss as a lesson for me to learn, and eventually overcome my shortcomings. Keith, I, as well as a lot of other people, could use more people like you in the community. Thank you for taking the time to explain this issue a lot of us have.-EtrianHero
+ARC Z It is no problem my friend. These type of subjects people don't like to talk about because they feel like they are in it alone. That, however, is not true.
This is what happened with my school tournament. 1 it was a 3 player free for all 2 everyone sucked 3 no rounds 4 only omega stages 5 the game wasn't even updated
To me, it is one thing to master a character's fundamentals and another to master your own playstyle of said character. It's sad to see people get downhearted because they couldn't do the things that Zero or Nairo could do. They're trying too hard to play a way they don't need to. I main Bowser - Le Troof is my Smash hero, and while our playstyles share a few things in common, he's a lot better at pivot grabbing than I am, and that's just because my playstyle doesn't use pivot grabs more much of the match. The people who are good get where they are by learning what character fits their favorite playstyle best and learning and/or coming up with new things to help them excel with that character.
i recently when to mi 1 tournament, feeling like i was gonna beat everyone and then i gor rekt and double rekt in loser. i feel really bad to lose that early feeling that i had practiced enough, i just decided to drop smash for that and try to do something else, but seeing your video help me a lot and now i realize that is part of getting better. now im going to another tournament hoping for better results, thanks man :)
Just recently went to a tournament, played falcon and sheik, got three scrubs but the first real player who was competitive practically bodied me, i was so nervous and worried that i missed a spike with a sour spot falcon dair ( around the knee when he pushes outwards ) then misinputed a side b, so it was a winnable match i just kept messing up and panicking, i felt so demoralized, then i went to losers and got bodied by a much better mario player , but i learned alot and i placed 6th out of 42 or so, it was not the worst thing in the world, but i was really dissappointed in myself so i revisited this video, just gotta practice and learn to calm myself so i dont panic, good luck to all of you in tournament
Paitence is needed for success, its not something you can do in just a day, perseverance is key, training is trial, and victory, is... Well, victory..! Every great hero started off at level 1, you must keep going and no matter what, never give up! Just like that one random quote i got from the internet 5 seconds ago "run! If you cant run, walk! If you can't walk, crawl! It doesn't matter how slow you go as long as your moving!" Or something like that.
I've been to one tournament only (due to lack of enough free time to stay there a whole day) and I got totally rekt, but man, was it fun, I can't wait to attend one again!!
I remeber mine, went to a local tourney and immediatly faced a ZSS and lost 2-1 and then a sonic lost 2-1. I also see this often. Some guy will come to our local but just never come back after being rekt. Its sad because we at said local love getting new players and seeing them groow and get better.
Hi Keef, today I went to my first melee tournament, it actually went so much better than expected, I went 1-2 which was awesome. Thanks for this video it helped me so much to get up off ma ass and do it 😊
My first Melee tournament I got matched in the first round to the guy who WON the tournament. He completely bodied me good. I wish I could say I came back from the losers bracket to face him again, but I matched my body up with a match just before the finals and played for fun, and ending up losing. Ah well.
Well, I'm going to my first major tourney (Super Smashnest v5) tomorrow. I'll see if my lofty expectation of top 32 outta 159 minimum will start the chain reaction you described here.
This video is an hard hit for me. I'm so scared of failing that I give up even before I try... in everything that I do. But... maybe, it's time to change this. I don't know how. I don't know if I'm gonna make it. But I'm so tired of this. It's time for a change. Let's do it.
This is definitely true. I got bodied by some doofy neckbeard in a fedora using ROB against my Rosa and it made me so mad that I just stopped playing for about a month and a half.
I went to my first local in September (I don't have a driver's license yet or I would've been going for months) expecting to get bodied in the first set. Lucky for me though, the guy that I was going against had only been to one tournament before this one, but I still expected to get bodied. Turns out, I bodied him! Second round I did get bodied by one of the top ten players in the state, sending me to losers. But I worked my way through losers and ended up getting 9th in my first tournament! Granted, there were only 35 or so entrants, but I still think that's a bit of a feat for a newcomer.
I'm going to go to my first tournament in about a week and I was wondering, are there any stereotypes about them are true. Like people all being smelly or women are heavily discriminated against(I'm a guy but I hope it's false) et cetera.
I don't go to tournaments because I feel like I can't take it seriously enough and I will end up spending most of the time just standing there which is awkward. I mean I don't mind losing I just kinda mind the wait after a loss where you kinda watch what everyone else is doing.
I watched this yesterday and funnily enough I participated in my first tournament yesterday as well. Not the best setup (3DS online tourney) but it was something, and I lost in both brackets 0-2. I shall fight on!
My 1st tournament was good. But I knew half people and we just started to make a local. Then a day we decided to go to a bigger tournament than our small local. Nobody made out of pool and our best player barely won 2 set vs 5 people. It was just as we expected, because we follow the scene we knew we were scrub but still appreciated the experience and when we can we try to go to other bigger region tourney. I got the chance talk to Ally, I don't know if it's me but he look pretty shy unlike his brother.
I remember my first melee tournament. (I was garbage back then and didn't know what characters were good or how to play against someone who isn't terrible.) The guy played Marth, I choose Roy thinking that his power made him a better character. I will let you figure out the result of the match. Now I scoff at what I used to be. Don't give up just because you suck at first. Practice and improve. You can do it!
It’s funny I may not be a pro at smash but I do play simi competitive(when ever I can I don’t even have a name for myself) but like I’ve found combos about megaman that I personally found and I’m not even a megaman main
I'm just watching like "yeah... He's right... I shouldnt let losing have such a huge influence on me" But i just know the second i boot up my game imma already start gettin mad at everything lmao
I was bodied in my first tournament, and I even lost the losers bracket. But I've been training on For Glory ever since that day. I'll be waiting for another tournament to come soon, 'cuz I am ready!
+Skrubmen Any remarks I make towards non competitive players in my videos I try my best to make sure it is portrayed as just jokes. I love all types of smash players. Everyone was a casual at one point.
K so I remember the first local I went to. Everyone except for 2 other people and I maimed top tiers. Keven, a Lucas main, Cobi, a toon link main, and I a robin main were the heroes of the tier list. Get this Keven placed 3rd Cobi took 2nd somehow I managed to place 1st. I've only placed 1st at 2 of my locals, but I consistently place high. Today I can hear them at my first local saying that robin didn't stand a chance. I had the courage to come out and show them tiers don't matter to me not should they to most.
"You didn't win the genetic lottery"..........7.8/10 too much brilliance
+Rapid Best thing I heard all day!
Oh that oras review...
clovehitch if you don't know the meme don't comment
The only reason I lose tournaments is because Rosa has no good MUs, I swear people just don't know it yet..
Agreed, and she just gets destroyed by Ness.
+Valor the cheese man And her worst matchup is inarguably Palutena without customs, there's just nothing she can do. Easily and 8:2 matchup.
+MisterZebra42 no ness gets destroyed by rosalina
+David perez that's the joke...
+MisterZebra42 yeah, dont forget about villager too
I never lose. Either I win, or I learn.

No flashy editing, meaning speeches, amazing speech, powerful words.. this is the kind of video that motivates me
I thought this was a comedy video.
I was happily wrong.
Thanks for this encouragement, man!
thanks, needed to hear that. I was a "local champ" who bodied his friends but had a rude awakening when I went to my first major.
btw great channel. I like how you seem to act natural and act like yourself and the jokes role of the tongue rather than seeming forced or scripted down to every detail.
I wish I could like this more than once. For me, this is a HUGE encouragement. Thank you so much for making this, I wish I could've seen it sooner.
I'm new to the channel because I saw a few of your "in a nutshell" videos.
Wasn't expecting to get some genuine advice here. Especially advice that is applicable to pretty much everything worth doing in life. This was great to hear.

Is beast 6 good idea to have as your first tournament?
+Diggerty 10 its a bit big
+Diggerty 10 why not? that would be a good place to meet a VERY large amount of great players and different playstyles. go in with an appropriate mindset though, don't expect to beat everyone there.
The Keef Crew it was a good idea, got to play wobbels in pools
+DERyuga Seriously, you are the goat!
Why thank you! I forgot about this comment lol
+DERyuga That was just as beautiful as the message in the video itself. ;~;
DERyuga people also misunderstand thier limits a lot
Human limits are above what a lot of people think
People think that they can't be like pro players in football or videogames but when people see others who they would think that they won't succeed or that they don't have what it takes surpass them they think they're unnatural or one of a kind
But every single one of us with work and determination can reach that level if not surpass it
I know im probably saying nonsense but that's how i see it anyways
Feminists would say, "There are NO losers."
I haven't gone to any tournaments in a while, but I think I'm ready to return thanks to you. Thanks for the awesome video!
That One Punch Man outro tho
Good message, shame that some people miss out on tournaments cause they don't think they're good enough.
I'm in South West UK and I don't go to tournaments because there aren't any, nothing at all :)
+TheSnelly101 really? wow. you should start up a scene over there man!
I'm there too and it sucks
+TheSnelly101 Didn'y you attend Bristol Battle 2 yesterday then?
I live so far away from Bristol xD

There are no short cuts to success
I needed to hear that thank you
It would be funny if the scrub looking person thought the same exact thing during the match.
This can be applied to pretty much anything.
And it's something I needed to hear.
Thanks.
Thanks for this video dude, I'm going to my first ever tournament tomorrow! This is great advice :)

Up to this day I wonder if this man won against this Dedede
Getting bodied is the first step to getting good
No joke this was my exact thought man this is just what I needed to see u are funny and help me thx man
This is what happened with my school tournament.
1 it was a 3 player free for all
2 everyone sucked
3 no rounds
4 only omega stages
5 the game wasn't even updated
Very inspirational video!
For me it's the social aspect that gets me. I could easily accept a crushing defeat knowing it only helps me to improve.
To me, it is one thing to master a character's fundamentals and another to master your own playstyle of said character. Super inspiring video! Love your channel, keep it up!
best smashbros pep talk ever.
Will 100% confirm that you have to go into tourneys open minded.
No shortcuts to success but what about 1800-toptier?

Preach it bro.
(Also please don't break my hands)
Wait... are you saying... Ganondorf DOESN'T beat Sheik?
Wow, my local Sheik mains must be ass.
Gannon is so bad against sheik I JV3 a gannon once....I really felt bad
Sheik is considered the best character right now, and Ganondorf is considered one of the worst, so yes.
Dude, you are super smart and super funny. Keep up the good work. Do you commentate for any streams? If not you should.
I've been to one tournament only (due to lack of enough free time to stay there a whole day) and I got totally rekt, but man, was it fun, I can't wait to attend one again!!
I love your videos man! New sub :]
+Overpowered_Donut thank you!
*When your Wi-Fi is down and you train against a level 9 sheik for the week, then get bodied* ;-;

Hi Keef, today I went to my first melee tournament, it actually went so much better than expected, I went 1-2 which was awesome. Thanks for this video it helped me so much to get up off ma ass and do it 😊
clicked on this expecting a funny ass video and now im all hyped up LMAO
I LOVE THIS MAN!!!!!!! HE A ANGLE OF TRUST

This is definitely true. I got bodied by some doofy neckbeard in a fedora using ROB against my Rosa and it made me so mad that I just stopped playing for about a month and a half.
Sometimes, people are too dumb to know how to practice. They (or people like me) just don't know how to refine themselves properly.
This video is super inspirational
When they play the OPM theme at the end. YES.
Your video was very inspiring, thank you :)
And then there are the Mii mains (there is a quite a bit of them) that wont join any tournament that does not allow any other movest than 1111 Guest.
+Samuel Välimaa Or don't compete at all because there are tournaments that outright just ban Miis altogether.
This is pretty much fighting games in general, not just at the competitive level.
Aye man, I called 1-800-Mid-Tier, and they blessed me with the Lucas.
I payed my dues.
I live
in nc and can not find any local tourneys, any suggestions?
I'm going to go to my first tournament in about a week and I was wondering, are there any stereotypes about them are true. Like people all being smelly or women are heavily discriminated against(I'm a guy but I hope it's false) et cetera.
The story of my first tournament in a nutshell. So true!
Tournaments? Outside NA? What are those?
Really wish I can enter a tourney. We have nothing here in Athens.
Good shit, I can't go cuz I can't find any and I don't travel....
I'm just watching like "yeah... He's right... I shouldnt let losing have such a huge influence on me"
But i just know the second i boot up my game imma already start gettin mad at everything lmao
This video give me envy of going to a tournament!
that genos music at the end
I did surprisingly well at my first few tournaments. I beat a lot of people in MKX and SF4.
That's me right there this whole video
I thought you were going to talk about things like Kirby's hammer hitting players on the ledge and stuff like that.
Yo this made me enter my first smash tournament thank you keef
Ganon the new counter to sheik confirmed!
I was bodied in my first tournament, and I even lost the losers bracket. But I've been training on For Glory ever since that day. I'll be waiting for another tournament to come soon, 'cuz I am ready!
There are better places than FG to practice
Mr StealYoGril Of course.
This video would hold a lot more meaning if the rest of his videos weren't frequently demeaning the non competitive players
+Skrubmen Any remarks I make towards non competitive players in my videos I try my best to make sure it is portrayed as just jokes. I love all types of smash players. Everyone was a casual at one point.
Right in the feels :'(
This somewhat actually helped me...
I got into semi-finals in both my first and second tournaments...
Nice video. What's that song at the end? it sounds like a remix of something but I can't think what.
oh wait, it's that labyrinth zone from Sonic and Knuckles, right?
+Zekersaurusrex lava reef zone
That ending tho.
Boi, that's just crazy!
good video Man. very inspirational
Thanks for this,it really helped.
Sadly no UK tournament near me
K so I remember the first local I went to. Everyone except for 2 other people and I maimed top tiers. Keven, a Lucas main, Cobi, a toon link main, and I a robin main were the heroes of the tier list. Get this
Keven placed 3rd
Cobi took 2nd
somehow I managed to place 1st. I've only placed 1st at 2 of my locals, but I consistently place high. Today I can hear them at my first local saying that robin didn't stand a chance. I had the courage to come out and show them tiers don't matter to me not should they to most.
*mained
RUclips turned my comment into a train wreck ;-;
