  • As House Minority Leader @crystalquade campaigns to become Missouri’s first Democratic governor in roughly eight years, she’s proposing eliminating the state’s tax on groceries.
The plan, which would affect both local and state grocery taxes, is meant as an alternative of sorts to income tax cuts that Missouri Republicans pursued over the past decade. Quade said that the state can afford to get rid of the tax, and send money to local governments to prevent them from losing critical revenue.
But even Quade says that there would need to be some replacement income, especially since the state’s surplus isn’t going to last forever. She’s proposed taxing things like yachts and foreign-owned farmland.
When asked if those potential revenue sources could actually fill the budgetary hole left by the departure of the grocery tax, Quade replied that those were just a few of a number of options that policymakers could pursue.
“The point of that legislation, of course knowing that it was not going to become law, is having a discussion around the fact that everyday Missourians are struggling with basic needs to get by right now,” said Quade, who served in the Missouri House for about eight years. “And we have so many tax cuts in Missouri for the uber wealthy. And in my time in Jefferson City, we've continued to pass more of them.”
