On viewing the video, I'm surprised how loose the binding seems. The book appears to open to 150-180 degrees very easily right away. I'm not sure I like that. Easton Press bindings, for example, are very tight. I recently got a used but unread copy of Easton's "The African Queen" and it was so tight that the book only opened readily to about 30 degrees. To me, that's a good thing, as it means the hinges are very strong. But maybe I'm off-base with that. One thing is that a leather-covered board is always going to be stronger than a paper-covered board alone, and I guess it could be that the bookbinders at Folio Society use some binding techniques I'm unaware of to make their bindings loose without sacrificing strength.
I think that king of thing is subjective. I quite like Folio's binding. It's really easy to hold and read. Folio have a reputation for the quality of their books and it's well deserved. Their books tend to last and show very little degradation over time. Sure a leather bound book will be stronger than a paper bound book, it'll also be a lot more expensive.
Thanks for the video! I love Earthsea; it’s one of my favorites. Yes please make videos about other, non-special edition books. I’m curious to see what you have.
