This production was fantastic...I saw the show in LA 2 years earlier and didn't connect with it at all...when I saw it at the Shaftesbury the summer of '96 it changed my life forever. Thanks for sharing!
As a Yank, I've always loved the original Broadway version, and especially Michael Cerveris as the original Tommy. But I've always been curious about the London run, as it's where Tommy is set, where The Who are from, and the cast weren't performing in an accent foreign to them. Thank you for posting this.
Thanks for posting Who's Tommy songs from the London production! When I get homesick & miss my big bro Tom & rocking out with him; I play Who's Tommy at my new place!!
Ever since I was a young boy I've played the silver ball From Soho down to Brighton I must have played them all But I ain't seen nothing like him In any amusement hall That deaf dumb and blind kid Sure plays a mean pin ball! He stands like a statue, Becomes part of the machine Feeling all the bumpers Always playing clean He plays by intuition, The digit counters fall That deaf dumb and blind kid Sure plays a mean pin ball! He's a pin ball wizard There has got to be a twist A pin ball wizard, S'got such a supple wrist How do you think he does it? I don't know! What makes him so good? He ain't got no distractions Can't hear those buzzers and bells Don't see lights a flashin' Plays by sense of smell Always gets a replay Never seen him fall That deaf dumb and blind kid Sure plays a mean pin ball I thought I was The Bally table king But I just handed My pin ball crown to him Even on my favorite table He can beat my best His disciples lead him in And he just does the rest He's got crazy flipper fingers Never seen him fall That deaf dumb and blind kind Sure plays a mean pin ball!
Any that they decided to send them to the week prior to th eopening press night. these clips appeared on all the major channels BBC, ITV etc at the time ... as well as the few cable channels that existed back then ... one of which di a feature on my 6 year old daughter who played the 4 year old Tommy for the first 3 months of teh Shaftesbury production.
Just saw the play on Broadway in NYC before it closed, this looks like amateur hour compared to that, the latest cast voices crush these guys, And why does the dude look drunk, limping around? Bizarre.
@actresstobe1408 Dani shared the role of Tommy aged 4 with my daughter Laura Allen from Feb to May 1996. But neither of them appeared inPinball Wizard. Laura is at the start of Smash The Mirror which I also uploaded.
@MattLionMC Sorry, I don't think so. Only the 4 songs I have uploaded were made for the TV companies, when the show opened in London. I have tried many times to find more.
The guy in the middle in the red/orange coat is Cousin Kevin (played by Hal Fowler who met Tommy's mum Kim Wilde during the show and later married her!). The other two (Adrian Smith in green and James Gillan in blue) were just members of Cousin Kevin's gang and I don't think had character names.
I never quite understood some of the staging for this production. We spend about forty minutes of hospital scenes and failed treatments, make Eyesight to the Blind an intro for The Acid Queen but don't even get an acid trip out of it, then we spend most of Pinball Wizard without Tommy on stage. But don't get me wrong, I fucking love this show.
My daughter Laura Allen who was 6 in 1996 played the 4 year old Tommy for the first 3 months of its run in London. As a result I was lucky enough to get lots of memorabilia from the show, including the promo videos made for the TV reviews at the time.
absolutely love this so much. funny thing. first time i heard it i did not care for it. for some reason gave it another chance and fell absolutely in love. go figger but this is so not it. bye
I could answer by saying"Yes ... The Who do sing this" ... or do you mean who is singing on this video? In which case ... which particular singer do you mean? The 3 lead guys?
Well yes ... Pete Townshend was there throughout the rehearsal process, working with Des Macanuff, the director. Roger Daltrey was at the opening night. He loved it. Maybe these "made for TV reviews" videos don't do it justice. The live show was loud, with a great rock band behind it ... very "Who".
nellac2007 No duh they approved. I didn't say they didn't. I'm saying its hard to believe they did. Better to watch the movie, or just listen to the album. I just dislike the way this whole thing was "staged". Doesn't fit. in my opinion...

Wonderful. I saw this show in that year in London and was the best I ever saw. Unforgettable memory. Outstanding musicianship, stage sets and acting.
Did this musical about 4 years ago, and watching this always sends shivers down my spine!! the voice are amazing!!
I went to see that show at the Shaftsbury. Absolutely fantastic. Shivers down the spine stuff. Brilliant music.. absolutely made for the stage.
I was there. Fantastic stuff. What a great evening.
Me too. Watching my daughter Laura playing the 4 year old Tommy :-)
@@nellac2007 Are you Laura's dad? I remember her well. Those were the days at the old Shafts.
They do have character names Pinball Lad #1 and Pinball Lad #2
I love Paul Keating, Nigel Harman, and James Gillan.
Tommy here reminds me of Ian Curtis (Joy Division) - hair, shirt, and the jerky body movements

I was once told Pete Townshend played the first night.
This is 1 of my favorites!!! Would go see it again if it came back! The Nutcracker & Cats & Swan Lake!!
amazing version!!!!!!
I would have loved to have seen this!
Excellent!!!!! Tommy, the Who, live musical in London!!!!! Bravo!!!!!!
Saw first show after Premier, awesome!
Thanks for posting Who's Tommy songs from the London production! When I get homesick & miss my big bro Tom & rocking out with him; I play Who's Tommy at my new place!!
Yumm The Local Lads, Cousin Kevin, and Tommy.😍
I want to be a pinball wizard, but cant find any pinball machines....
Ever since I was a young boy
I've played the silver ball
From Soho down to Brighton
I must have played them all
But I ain't seen nothing like him
In any amusement hall
That deaf dumb and blind kid
Sure plays a mean pin ball!
He stands like a statue,
Becomes part of the machine
Feeling all the bumpers
Always playing clean
He plays by intuition,
The digit counters fall
That deaf dumb and blind kid
Sure plays a mean pin ball!
He's a pin ball wizard
There has got to be a twist
A pin ball wizard,
S'got such a supple wrist
How do you think he does it? I don't know!
What makes him so good?
He ain't got no distractions
Can't hear those buzzers and bells
Don't see lights a flashin'
Plays by sense of smell
Always gets a replay
Never seen him fall
That deaf dumb and blind kid
Sure plays a mean pin ball
I thought I was
The Bally table king
But I just handed
My pin ball crown to him
Even on my favorite table
He can beat my best
His disciples lead him in
And he just does the rest
He's got crazy flipper fingers
Never seen him fall
That deaf dumb and blind kind
Sure plays a mean pin ball!
I liked this version
we did this musical my freshman year
Why would anyone do this without the piano. It literally creates the atmosphere of buzzing pinball tables
bc this is more of the whos version instead of elton johns but yes i prefer elton johns version.
love it
YES!
Wow!

nellac2007 they are pinball lads 1 and 2 (blue is 2 green is 1)
For me Donnie Kehr (Cast Offenbach) was the better Cousine Kevin Actor

I never got to see the original staging of Tommy. Can you upload the whole show.
뮤지컬 “토미 “중 더후 (The Who)의 “Pinball Wizard”(1996)
Omg how do u have this? Saw the show the day before it closed. Amazing!

The first two. The other one is Cousin Kevin.
I could answer by saying"Yes ... The Who do sing this" ... or do you mean who is singing on this video? In which case ... which particular singer do you mean? The 3 lead guys?
Who sings this?
Tommy looks like Keith Moon a bit.
1:44
Who sings what?
0:36
O k
Sorry ... no. Only 4 EPK videos were ever made, to use for publicity for TV companies prior to the opening press night
Lame. I can't believe The Who approved this crap.

+nellac2007 roger D's first viewing was at opening night???ha ha, I saw it b4 he did!!
You ain't shittin', dude! I could barely tolerate the 30 seconds I let this run!!! FUCKING RUBBISH!!!
nellac2007 No duh they approved. I didn't say they didn't. I'm saying its hard to believe they did. Better to watch the movie, or just listen to the album. I just dislike the way this whole thing was "staged". Doesn't fit. in my opinion...
