"You felt bad, now you're his spy?" Considering that they responded to his obvious joke about just destroying the Narn homeworld with "one thing at a time," he's pretty clearly terrified about what they'll do to him if he doesn't play ball.
I also loved Morden's expression when Londo suggests destroying the entire Narn homeworld. Morden gets series while before this he was smiling and says one thing at a time.
A general rule of B5 is: "in JMS we trust. Just keep watching." I really miss the old Na'Toth. I thought Caitlin Brown embodied that character just as well as Andreas Katsulas is the very definition of G'Kar. But I do get that the technology of that day could mean HOURS in the makeup chair each morning to be transformed into an alien, and that would be... difficult... to accept several years running.
I heard it was the eye contacts in particular that she had to wear that were extremely painful to her. She does return though in an episode in a different part, looking human, so hard to recognize her ;)
As for the previous Commander. I guess they have nothing to grieve. He is fine and has a new job and that is normal in military life. We can assume they even talk to him from time to time.
It's not really a question of, "How do you prove this?" It's more about, who do you prove this to? When the very hierarchy that you have entrusted power to is corrupt, what do you do? These questions are important themes of B5.
Different actor for Na'Toth, the prior lady had an issue with the prosthetics and was making a lot more doing other genres. She does come back in another role later.
Not quite right. They cast 3 actresses to play G'Kar's aide in season 1. The first played Ko'Dath but she struggled with the contact lenses and left after 1 episode. The second was meant to play Na'Toth but had a claustrophobia-induced panic attack during pre-shooting makeup while the prosthetics were applied. She never appeared on screen. These two situations happened mid-shooting season 1, so they had to scrabble around to get a replacement on short notice. The third actress was who we saw as Na'Toth in season 1. She only agreed to shoot the season 1 episodes as she wanted to avoid typecasting/distractions from her main stream acting career. I haven't heard about this third actress having a problem with the make up. The fourth actress was who we saw here. They chose to recast Na'Toth rather than create a third character as G'Kar's aide.
@@zarabada6125 I remember reading that the second actress to play Na'Toth also had problems with the prosthetics or maybe just didn't like them but perhaps the two got mixed up in the article or my memory 😂
So couple of things about the command change. First off season 2 picks up days/weeks? After the transfer so the crew has had some time to adjust. Being military they would be used to moving around to different commands. While sinclair was a good commander he was only in the roll for a short time since the station came online, which was too long before the pilot took place. It’s not like he was there for 10 years… Also from the pilot, Ivanova and franklin were not stationed there yet so they only knew him for a short time as well. Also don’t forget that Ivanova served with sheridon on the ioe transfer station so she probably wouldn’t be as upset at him taking over command. Plus he did gain crew respect right out of the gate by handling the Traggatti mambari situation very well. As you said Garibaldi was a bit taken back and with jeff being his friend and the guy who brought him on to help “save” him, would also be the one to take the change hardest. As you will come to learn (if not already) Garaboldi doesn’t like leaving things to chance and would get as much info about the new commander to see just what kind of person he is. Finally it was only really briefly talked about but sheridon is a bit of a war hero having been the only person in earthforce to destroy a mambari warship during the war. So he was probably a bit of a celebrity or at least respected among other earthforce officers and or even humans in general. So lots of reasons for everyone to have moved on a bit quickly. Plus of course Jeff isn’t dead so they could and probably did stellarcom him after the transfer. Which again would’ve made his moving on less harsh.
The transfer took place literally a couple of days after Santiago's assassination- which means it's been in the works beforehand. My guess is after the initial shock ,etc it took a few days to let Ivanova know "It's been 8 days since President Santiago's death, and 6 days since Commander Sinclair was recalled to Earth" As far as this episode, think it's set 2 weeks after the premier (though it's possibly one week) -IMO pretty unlikely for his sister to find out he's been transferred, book tickets, and travel to B5 in a week
All these people are in a military organization. People change positions fairly regularly. I'm sure they're used to having one commander one day and a new one the next.
Andreas as G'Kar is such a fantastic actor. Just hearing him say "Weep for the Future, Na'Toth - weep for us all!" sends chills down my spine. "Unless you are involved" Good point, Shelley. We shall see how that goes. Yeah! "Londo, Londo, Londo!" You are right about that. I do think you will get to like Sheridan. We shall see. Till next time ... be seeing you!
About this episode... The best way to describe from here on is from Kosh Naranak itself... "And So It Begins" Z'ha'Dum... its almost Tolkien-esque (LOL)
The Delenne spolier in the credits, I don't remember that from when it aired. I'm pretty sure they used footage from Season 1 for the first couple of episodes, then changed it over, maybe the remasters messed it up. I don't know.
Enjoyed your reaction as I usually do. This episode plants a LOT of seeds that will grow throughout this season and beyond- you will find yourself remembering some small bits that seem unimportant that come back later in a big way.... Delennes "transformation" Sheridans recovering from the loss of his wife Londo & Morden Sheridans realization that something is wrong with Santiagos assassination- and that Clark is involved G'Kar trying to convince everyone of the danger....
One thing about this show that you'll find is that every single unexpected cast change is integrated into the story very smoothly because JMS had prepared every character in advance as well as alternative storylines for any role that had to be changed at the last minute without having to resort recasting the original role. Some of the resulting storylines that come from this are ingenious as you'll soon see...
Delenn's hair ended up being a major pain in the ass until much later in the season. No one really knew how to make the head bone work with a head of hair. They finally figured it out.
I would note that military folk end up transferred willy-nilly quite a bit, and that the military folk on B5 would likely be very used to that sort of thing happening, so in a sense, it is not terribly surprising that with everything that is going on, they don't take time to be upset about Sinclair being sent on another mission... My $.02
I'm glad you enjoyed this one. It's tough to deal with replacing an actor in a leading role so suddenly, but there's plenty going on with the story that doesn't revolve around the station head so there's room to breathe. I'm looking forward to the next reaction!
I still say the bone is completely fake. lol. She just wears it to keep the Grey Council happy. :) (to explain why her hair is sometimes under the bone and other times over the bone...)
Also someone should have told you not to watch the credits for the first few episodes. I'm just finding you and a few others doing B5 reactions. It's exciting, especially since you're also watching X-Files and Highlander. Hope you'll also get into the Buffyverse soon as well...
The last two episodes, you've mentioned concern about the characters not reacting much to Sinclair being transferred... I understand your own emotional response, but you cannot expect them to be as invested because you have seen aspects of Sinclair that they have not. Also, these are essentially military personnel, a career where transfers are just a fact of life. Remember, in one of the first scenes of Season 2, with Ivanova's voice-over catching us up on what's going on, she says that it's been 5 days since the commander's transfer... If she was gonna feel anything, it would not only be over by now, it would also not show while on duty. A fact that is true of all of them, really. So, they're not heartless, they're just a little more pragmatic. ;-]
Caitlyn Brown has a nasty skin reaction to the makeup and had to bow out. It wasn't dangerous, but it messed up her complexion for other jobs. Narn makeup was pretty harsh, I guess.
"You felt bad, now you're his spy?"
Considering that they responded to his obvious joke about just destroying the Narn homeworld with "one thing at a time," he's pretty clearly terrified about what they'll do to him if he doesn't play ball.
Riding the tiger.... just as dangerous to get off, as to stay on.
I also loved Morden's expression when Londo suggests destroying the entire Narn homeworld. Morden gets series while before this he was smiling and says one thing at a time.

I'm sure such a conversation would start with a jovial, "Hello old friend!"
It's not really a question of, "How do you prove this?" It's more about, who do you prove this to? When the very hierarchy that you have entrusted power to is corrupt, what do you do? These questions are important themes of B5.

A "bridge" too far?
Delenn said it first.

Sheridan became a lot more relatable, just it took me more than 2 years to get out of the habit of 'must tell her'

Sorry to say, she was advised to hold off watching the intro, but was a bit late getting the word

Hashtag Not my Na'Toth
thats a big cup
Caitlyn Brown has a nasty skin reaction to the makeup and had to bow out. It wasn't dangerous, but it messed up her complexion for other jobs.
Narn makeup was pretty harsh, I guess.
