One of the all-time great soundtracks. Sense of urgency intrigue with the broken and punctuated trumpets leads to a beautiful interlude with the piano and French horn. One of the greatest endings of all time for a film.
You can thank Mrs. Talia Coppola Shire for that smooth bridge in this version. The flim makers wanted David Shire to catch the hardcore rhythm of NYC and he nailed it. Talia convinced him into also catching the smooth jazzy side of the city as well. Kudos to the Shires*
It's even more than that. It's the mechanical, grinding, wheels-turning basis of the music, as if Mr. Shire was vocalizing what a train would sound like converted to music. Great, great, great.
Truly a soundtrack that was so critical to the movie. I love the section David Shire after his wife Talia suggest he add to give it a true arc for the story.
Jazzy beats as soundtrack and background, NYC of the 70s, it gets you in the atmosphere of the time and the city during those days...and R. Shaw is a master performer.
This film is extremely underrated. Robert Shaw and Martin Balsam really kept it grounded; while Walter Matthau added humor. Hope this comes out in blu-ray soon. Spoilers: I remember rooting for Balsam's character (I forgot his code name) to get away with all that money till that cold gave him away.
Shaw as Mr. Blue was a likeable villain, he kept his British Stiff Upper Lip, up and tight till the last moment, he stood out......excellent performance.
Terrific film , great cast , very humorous , very slick. I love it when the Mayor has a streaming cold and is told what has happened and says : " Sh*t ! P*ss ! F**k ! "
Much as I loved Denzel Washington in the remake, the original’s ending (as noted here) is priceless. Walter Matthau’s expression says more in the final five seconds than five minutes of anything else could have.
I'm the biggest Denzel fan but Walter Matthau got to be more of a badass in this movie. I actually always liked the 2009 remake even though it definitely doesn't match the original. The biggest mistake the remake made was not using an updated version of this amazing score for the film instead of the generic music they ended up using. They missed a golden opportunity to pay great respect and homage to the original classic perhaps gaining respect from fans of the original too.
@@kendallrivers1119 I had to reply when I saw that you mentioned the score. How could I have left it out, as that theme must be one of the 20 best movie themes in existence? As you said, it was just begging for inclusion in the remake. Denzel deserved nothing less…
@@SaintVodou I would've liked to have seen the reactions in the theaters in they had used that iconic theme in the opening of the 2009 remake. Would've definitely blown some minds lol.
Another case where the bad guy becomes unintentionally the centre of the story. Shaw as Mr. Blue was a likeable villain, he kept his British Stiff Upper Lip, up and tight till the last moment, he stood out......excellent performance.
It's tough to make a re-make. Especially when the original was so good. Classic. John Travolta is a great entertainer but as an actor he can't hold a candle to classically trained Robert Shaw. RS never gave a bad performance, 100% intensity. All support cast were all intense. Hostages, terrorist & police/politicians. However the very top of the picture is the movie sound track. Big loss for the remake was not reusing the sound track from the first. How can you do a better job than the original. The definition of 'Hubris'.
There are two versions of the theme song. This one is about 30 seconds longer because it has the "softer" interlude between the hard opening and the hard ending. I like this one better than the other version without the interlude and I like the ending of this one a little better..
Paul Robinson I love the opening, shame it just comes and goes. The film was described in a newspaper as having a " blaring big city score". They weren't kidding.
Love New York I have always wanted to become an official citizen of the city of New York but I don’t think that will ever come to pass but that base in the song makes me picture New York gangs of old and new getting some old payback for some sort of injustice that’s been dealt them deadly tune it says to vacate I’m coming through peace to all New Yorkers peace out Daniel
Rico - Zach, I know how they are going to do it. Zach - Im listening. Rico - They're going to hijack the train to Cuba. Zach - You"re a sick man, Rico.
Sorry but he never actually says that...he starts to but then hems and haws and finally said, something along the lines like: I dont know what I thought. The implication was obvious and the way Daniels was looking at him as he wormed his way out of what he was going to say was priceless.
Gensundheit. One of the best "gotchya" moments in film history.
Happy 50th Anniversary to a great movie.
One of the greatest New York City movies.
One of the all-time great soundtracks. Sense of urgency intrigue with the broken and punctuated trumpets leads to a beautiful interlude with the piano and French horn. One of the greatest endings of all time for a film.
British composer Herman Martin did a comparable track, "Zad", in 2011. ruclips.net/video/iORrrBwCanc/видео.html
When Ben Stiller made the NYC crime thriller "Tower Heist" there were some subtle references to this film. His dad was of course in the original film.
This track just shouts “Get the fuk outta my way!!!”
The score and the movie. They don't make em like this anymore
Great theme, from one of the best " New York in the 70 's " movies
This is one of my all-time favorite movies!!
Mine too, love it.
I loved the film and the brilliant score since I was a child... a classic and so evocative of New York City, especially in the 70s
You nailed it!
Love Shire's snarling brass in the main titles.

Plus they needed more music because it would have ended before the credits were finished and they couldn't speed them up any more.
Very good points! And the bridge is such a wonderful counterpoint to the snarling syncopation.
Yo, Adrian. Thanks.
It's even more than that. It's the mechanical, grinding, wheels-turning basis of the music, as if Mr. Shire was vocalizing what a train would sound like converted to music. Great, great, great.
"Tallie" also gets credit for Kay Corleone not just losing her baby, but for having an abortion.
Music played with REAL instruments...I love it...
Truly a soundtrack that was so critical to the movie. I love the section David Shire after his wife Talia suggest he add to give it a true arc for the story.
Brilliant, and set the whole NY tension for the movie.
A great music score to end a great movie. A timeless classic.
Simply the GREATEST Score to a Movie EVER!!!
Up there with Jaws, Predator, John Carpenter's The Thing and The French Connection.
@@kendallrivers1119 Uhhhh. No! Those Scores you mentioned. NO!!
Another Shaw movie with a badass theme.

Mister Green.
THE W0LF Hector Elizondo stole the flick!
THE W0LF This iz tha film where Quentin Tarantino got the idea to name all the robbers after colours in Reservoir Dogs
You’re a sick man Rico:)
@@Lonette Correction,.. Harold Longman Alias Mr. Brown
Excellent, gritty soundtrack to a tough, first-rate suspense film. Many of today's films cannot compare with stuff made > 20 years ago.
I loved Robert Shaw's character
Do you have your pen?..........

Very powerful music from a terrific film it had everything you always wanted !!!!!
One of the best film ending dramatically and musically! David
Shire's a film score is brilliant!
That drummer deserves his own Oscar.
Another case where the bad guy becomes unintentionally the centre of the story. Shaw as Mr. Blue was a likeable villain, he kept his British Stiff Upper Lip, up and tight till the last moment, he stood out......excellent performance.
Holy shit 1:51 is just amazing. That piano riff
This Shit Right Here👍,All Time Classic
This drummer is insane. WOW!
and underrated too!
This goes so damn hard.
One of the top sound tracks of movie history. Up their with 'Lawrence of Arabia.' Robert Shaw & Walter Matthau never made a bad movie.
Wait a minute, The Big Country is way up there too!!!!!
ONE hell of a Funky Tune here 🗽
Gesundheit!
This is insanely funky.
The most "brassy" soundtrack ever made!
"What the hell do they expect for their lousy 35 cents, to live forever?" -always loved that line.
JUST LOVE IT
Such a cool soundtrack for such a great movie.
The remake was HORRIBLE!!
Agreed!! :)
No, it wasn't "horrible" - it was simply unnecessary. Like most remakes.
No, compared to the original, it was worse than horrible.
The original was much better than the John Travolta remake.

The original TTOP123 is my favourite film, can’t get enough of it... travolta’s remake is incomparably bad
Butch Cassidy & the sundance kid and this flick, my favourite classic scores.
ROBERT SHAW great actor
Music cant be better than this
One of best music ever!

Has a great Lalo Schifrin feel. I'd say Christoph Becke did a similar soundtrack to Tower Heist. Eerily similar...!
"She's movin" "Who's movin?"
Great, a David Shire soundtrack 👌

Ace Action With Ace Film Theme.
This could be a Dirty Harry theme....
Magnífica banda sonora!!!!!,gran peli

Now you own the book you can live it
We are monitoring you on our board Pelham 123
This movie I have
When people say "serial 12-tone music sucks" you can play this for them. It's all based on a 12-tone row, just like what Schoenberg used to do.
Interesting!
Rico - Zach, I know how they are going to do it.
Zach - Im listening.
Rico - They're going to hijack the train to Cuba.
Zach - You"re a sick man, Rico.
Pelham 123 is in motion

You're a sick man Rico

This is for you New York city transit
This is when our transit tunnels were in such bad shape back then due to our transit authority being broke
The remake makes me sick! This is the real deal right here. I think we need a bigger train.
This is for all you underground subway train motormen local 100
For New York city transit
there's one scene that's cut out of this movie when Matthau meets Lieutenant Daniels for the first time. He says oh I didn't think you were black.
Sorry but he never actually says that...he starts to but then hems and haws and finally said, something along the lines like: I dont know what I thought. The implication was obvious and the way Daniels was looking at him as he wormed his way out of what he was going to say was priceless.
Do you recognize the actor who plays Daniels appearing in the James Bond film Live and Let Die?
1:52 TO 2:35 SOUNDS LIKE THE THEME FROM T.V SERIES " KOJAK "
Who’s gonna steal a train....
Bell tower shit, straight up..

Horrible Remake. Never should have done it.
