    I think y'all have looked over the satire of this skit. Hollywood seems infatuated with Brits playing American roles. It's like they are awestruck that they can pull it off. Yet American actors may actually have backgrounds similar to the roles, and are able to perform the role well, but have been overlooked because of "the awe" of Brits.

    • @justicedavis5705
      @justicedavis5705 3 года назад +37

      I say we Americans should just start playing roles meant for the British just for sake of equality. I mean I know the British are just as infatuated with Americans who can do their accent well just as we are with them. There has to be a segment of British directors just like there are here in the states who have no problem with giving a role to any actor who can play the role well, regardless of nationality.

      @@justicedavis5705 Hollywood brands itself as the centre of the worlds entertainment industry so it makes sense for people outside to go there to work. On the other hand, there are so few big British productions that it would be weird for an American to travel to Britain for a role... Especially seeing as there are so few roles to compete for here and Americans have been infamous for doing terrible British accents from Van Dyke to Don Cheadle to Keanu Reeves to Anne Hathaway (who said she begged them not to make her do it), so they'll be less willing to take the chance.

    • @justicedavis5705
      @justicedavis5705 3 года назад +7

      @@charleneraymond4036 I get that, my comment was meant to be more of a joke. I know it is unlikely that an American actor would take that chance when there are so many opportiunities to work out here. However, as this skit shows it does seem that Hollywood has a weird infatuation with any British actor that can do a pull off an average American accent when honestly a good American accent isn't that hard to pick up compared to others once you've heard it a few times. I mean even American comedians have built careers off of impersonating other Americans, our accents are easy even for other Americans to mimick so I just thought it would be refreshing to see the concept turned around.

    Key had the idea to write this skit because his wife is a dialect/accent coach for actors and there were many Brits coming to their house to learn how to do American accents, and he would get angry about that since foreign actors were taking jobs from American actors. In an American movie, they typically cast UK actors for characters with UK accents, but you never hear of UK productions casting American actors to play characters with UK accents.

    • @oceanfive5
      @oceanfive5 Год назад +3

      That’s mostly due to the fact Americans are terrible with British accents, the amount of films I’ve watched and can’t get through the full thing because the accent was so bad. British ppl and ppl in general can do an American accent it’s pretty simple.

    • @vicentesalasii1480
      @vicentesalasii1480 Год назад +5

      @Oceanfive That's not necessarily always the case. It's just that native speakers of each have a more trained ear to catch the flaws than others. Even the most excellent of British actors from Hopkins (Welsh) to Elba (English) have slipped up on the subtleties of certain pronunciations when playing American roles. Further, just as is the case in the UK, and frankly, everywhere, there isn't just one American accent. There are regional dialects and accents too. Someone from Brooklyn doesn't talk exactly like someone from Queens. There are similarities, but many differences too. Someone from Chicago sounds nothing like someone from Florida. Of course, then there's proper American English (however of an oxymoron that sounds) just as there's proper British English.

      As for American actors who do British well, Alan Tudyk sounded like he belonged right alongside Paul Bettany and Mark Addy in A Knight’s Tale. Hugh Grant thought Renee Zellweger was really British when they were filming Bridget Jones’ Diary, Johnny Depp sounds believable as Jack Sparrow, RDJ sounded authentic as Sherlock Holmes…

    • @danielcody7568
      @danielcody7568 Год назад

      @@vicentesalasii1480 Very true. Now, Tom Wilkinson did such a great job as Carmine Falconi in Batman Begins, I didn’t even know he wasn’t American. He nailed that NY Italian-American mobsteraccent.
      However, I’ve yet to witness a UK actor who can do a Southern US accent. Those accents are very diverse as well, but in every case I’ve seen of a UK actor playing a character from the Southern US, it sounds like a goofy caricature or hodge-podge of different affectations from different regions that aren’t typical of the region their character is from. Matthew McConaughey (TX) sounds different from Bill Clinton (AR), who sounds different from Theo Von (LA), who sounds different from my buddy Joe (WV). Daniel Craig is a mighty fine actor, but his Southern accent is a tragic car-wreck of Kentucky moonshiner, North Georgia plantation owner, and old Alabama lawyer.

    Some actors just fit the role perfectly like the role was made specifically for them. Like Hugh Laurie as Dr. Gregory House in the titular show. I could never imagine anyone else in the role, he played it so perfectly, and I didn’t even know he was actually British until past season 3. In my mind, no one else can ever be Dr.House, not even another A list Hollywood star. I think there’s just iconic roles like that, which fits the actor. Likewise this could be said with a lot of other famous characters filled by American actors. Captain Jack Sparrow is indisputably such a great character because of Johnny Depp. And Clint Eastwood will always be the equivalent of the rugged old western Americana and synonymous with cowboy western classics. I think just some fill the role better than others despite one’s nationality. Acting is different in that there is aspects of one’s appearance that affects our perception of the character. If it was only based on one’s experiences how great someone acted then every writer should be a great actor too, right?

    Mate you all have to react to Kid Nation, it was an absolute crazy th show where 40 kids are thrown into the Midwest and are forced to self govern and practice trickle-down economics

    It kinda weirds me out when I find out one of my favorite TV show actors is British when they're playing an American. One of the shows I started watching and absolutely love is Breeders. I think that show is hilarious. It's an American-British comedy.
