I have been teaching middle school for 17 years and I have to say, this was a good reminder for me! I graduated college in December to be a high school English teacher. Since then, I have just returned to my job as a grocery manager at a local store. The original plan was to secure a teaching job at the beginning of the next school year in August, but the longer I spend away from school, the more insecure I get about my abilities to teach and to interact with the students. I'm about to move back to the states to teach at an inner city middle school after being a kindergarten English teacher in China for 4 years and I'm also really nervous about connecting with the students. BUT just do it. Mistakes will happen without a doubt and if you really want it to work you will find solutions to those mistakes and become the teacher you want to be. Embrace the fear! But think of this---what if you have an incredible ability to teach (that you can perfect over time) and there are kids that are waiting for a teacher like you? This video is definitely helpful. I have to admit, dealing with middle schoolers is another level. Sometimes I would have a group that was very mature and another that was completely the opposite. Students gain your respect when you invest time in them and build personal teacher-student relationships. This is something I always had to make time for and I learned throughout my years of teaching. I found that whenever I didn't do that... my student saw me as the enemy. Being a teacher is probably one of the hardest professions.

This was so helpful! I've taught in a challenging high school in Australia for 12 years. I had 4 years off to have my babies and have just returned in Janurary and I forgot how hard it is. I feel like I'm a new teacher again. A lot has changed and the juggle with being a mum and being a good teacher is much harder than I expected. Thank you for your insights. I'm subscribed to a lot of the teachers here on youtube but many of them are Elementary teachers. I switched last semester, after I decided to shadow in a high school class, to Secondary Ed and got exposed to that atmosphere. I NEVER thought i would have fallen in love as much as i did but now i need a lot of help! I feel like Elementary Ed has a lot more aid versus Seconday Ed. I shadow at a Title 1 with predominantly hispanic students and I did watch your video where you mentioned that you dont speak spanish but its a great skill to have, and i agree on the entirely. So many student are coming from Puerto Rico to Orlando after Maria hit and some know little to no spanish so I help around a lot. Again thank youuu!!
I'm teaching in Colombia and have had many experiences trying to improve my classroom management. It is not easy and I feel like it also is affected by school context. Different schools have different styles and curriculum and cultures. I really appreciate your guidance and advice. I love high school but I love even more the sweetness of elementary school students

I‘m so glad I found your channel! Love the way you explain things! 😍 I‘m a first year teacher in Germany where I teach Middle School and High School as it is combined here. I have one very difficult class that I love teaching, but they do drive me crazy every now and then. I especially like the idea of writing post it notes. Thanks for that! I‘ll try it out. And oh yes, timers! When I got one, I never thought they would react so well to it. I also use it to challenge the kids to team up in groups in less than a minute and things like that. Otherwise it takes them forever. Setting a timer somehow turns it into a game. Works in any grade, it‘s weird. 😄 I‘m looking forward to more of your videos! ❤️
Wow teaching in Germany? That's so awesome! I have a class like that too, they are a really excited bunch but sometimes keeping them on task can be so hard! Yup, the post it notes make like so easy and thats such a good point about the timers! Getting them into groups, who ever can do it the fastest becomes a game. Thanks so much Amanda for all your helpful videos! I just started emergency subbing this month and it has been fun and crazy at the same time. Classroom management is like a tightrope walk. I am not afraid to tell students no, but sometimes I think I make mistakes about how to approach discipline so the negative behavior isn't recurring. Its essential to put yourself in the mind of the kid -- what would I have thought as a kid of my methods to correct behavior? Positive reinforcement, or merely neutral talk with the student (depending on severity of poor behavior) has been beneficial but sometimes I am not positively reinforcing enough! I don't want them to not like me to the point that my efforts will make it worse, including the overall classroom environment. Wow it is tough to navigate!
Yes! I agree! It is just a tricky thing to manage and comes with A LOT of trial and error. I've made many mistakes in the past and escalated situations that I shouldn't have. The best part is that you're already self-reflecting and thats key for improvement and true relationship in the classroom
Thanks for your input!!! I just started college to get my bachelors in Sped, and I believe we learn this classroom management hands on. No student, school or teacher will be the same and until we are in the moment with trial and errors that's when we learn. I also feel that the repetitions of expectations should be used at home!!! What a twist I took from this. Someone on the comments mentioned Jesus and yes that is true. Constant reminder of what Jesus has done for us, reminder of expectations, reminders of home expectations. Is there a big difference in salary between teaching high schoolers versus elementary school where you are? What about teaching grade 8 versus teaching grade 3?
I had a small portion of classes on classes on classroom management (still in school) the teacher said that you should spend at least the first week setting up classroom management

This was such a helpful video! I am a student secondary teacher from Australia in my third year. What are your subject areas? Mine are English, history and society and culture. Like you have stated, you don't learn these skills and tactics at university - you learn them whilst actually teaching. I plan to do a professional experience overseas, however my university provides no guidance, and I must form my own connections to a school and mentor teacher. I hope I can find a mentor willing to take on an Australian student. Is this something you have ever considered or would be open to? I‘m so glad I found your channel! Love the way you explain things! 😍 I‘m a first year teacher in Germany where I teach Middle School and High School as it is combined here. I have one very difficult class that I love teaching, but they do drive me crazy every now and then. I especially like the idea of writing post it notes. Thanks for that! I‘ll try it out.
And oh yes, timers! When I got one, I never thought they would react so well to it. I also use it to challenge the kids to team up in groups in less than a minute and things like that. Otherwise it takes them forever. Setting a timer somehow turns it into a game. Works in any grade, it‘s weird. 😄

Wow teaching in Germany? That's so awesome! I have a class like that too, they are a really excited bunch but sometimes keeping them on task can be so hard! Yup, the post it notes make like so easy and thats such a good point about the timers! Getting them into groups, who ever can do it the fastest becomes a game. Thanks so much Amanda for all your helpful videos! I just started emergency subbing this month and it has been fun and crazy at the same time. Classroom management is like a tightrope walk. I am not afraid to tell students no, but sometimes I think I make mistakes about how to approach discipline so the negative behavior isn't recurring. Its essential to put yourself in the mind of the kid -- what would I have thought as a kid of my methods to correct behavior? Positive reinforcement, or merely neutral talk with the student (depending on severity of poor behavior) has been beneficial but sometimes I am not positively reinforcing enough! I don't want them to not like me to the point that my efforts will make it worse, including the overall classroom environment. Wow it is tough to navigate!
Yes! I agree! It is just a tricky thing to manage and comes with A LOT of trial and error. I've made many mistakes in the past and escalated situations that I shouldn't have. The best part is that you're already self-reflecting and thats key for improvement and true relationship in the classroom
Thanks for your input!!! I just started college to get my bachelors in Sped, and I believe we learn this classroom management hands on. No student, school or teacher will be the same and until we are in the moment with trial and errors that's when we learn. I also feel that the repetitions of expectations should be used at home!!! What a twist I took from this. Someone on the comments mentioned Jesus and yes that is true. Constant reminder of what Jesus has done for us, reminder of expectations, reminders of home expectations. Is there a big difference in salary between teaching high schoolers versus elementary school where you are? What about teaching grade 8 versus teaching grade 3?

Great video! What are your classroom rules? Do you provide any warnings and what are the consequences after rules have been broken (ex.: detention, filling out a behavior reflection sheet, contact parents, sent to the Office, etc.)

This was such a helpful video! I am a student secondary teacher from Australia in my third year. What are your subject areas? Mine are English, history and society and culture. Like you have stated, you don't learn these skills and tactics at university - you learn them whilst actually teaching. I plan to do a professional experience overseas, however my university provides no guidance, and I must form my own connections to a school and mentor teacher. I hope I can find a mentor willing to take on an Australian student. Is this something you have ever considered or would be open to? Your videos have already helped me develop my confidence as a young teacher :)

I am prepping to become a CTE Business teacher for high school kids and just watched your video about the first year and am starting to watch this one now. :) I know it's been a while since you have started teaching, but do you remember how your first day went? first day, first week, first month? Would you be able to make a video about those firsts? I just can't imagine how would it be to get there, the first time. lol I know you had student teaching.. which means you got some practice.. I won't have that. Just practicum at the end of my certification.. but just throwing an idea that would be reaaaaally helpful. Thank you!! :)
