    • @neuralvibes
      @neuralvibes 2 года назад +13

      Yeah, that kind of bombastic BS has no place in a serious documentary. In reality, even a quick and non-costly German victory at Stalingrad would merely have assured a continued fighting chance for Germany until the next big battle. Anything less than a quick victory was inevitably going to put Germany at a disadvantage and on the backfoot. So the idea that the Soviet fate was somehow being decided at Stalingrad is the exact opposite of the truth.

    My Grandfather fought for the Wehrmacht during the war. He was part of the 6th army, 44th infantry division and saw action in Poland, France and Kharkov. He was captured along with thousands of men at Stalingrad and ultimately lost 80lbs of body weight post-war moving around different Russian labour camps before finally returning home to Germany in the mid 1950s.
    His older brother served in the German navy as an officer. He was on submarine U-107 which sank British ship Colonial off Guinea, French West Africa; the entire crew of 100 survived and rescued by HMS Centurion.
    The youngest brother out of the 3 survived the war as a loader for the Jagdtiger in the 512th heavy tank destroyer battalion and surrendered to the Americans in May 1945.

      Because of the many massacres and brutalities suffered by all Soviet people by the German forces after Barbarossa, there was next to no sympathies for German POWs. Depending on whether one uses German (1 million) or Russian estimates (400,000) of POW deaths, the numbers and residual hatred are still staggering. One source puts the number of German survivors who lived to return to Germany at 6,000. The last German POW returned in 1956. To this day, the memories of deaths and horrors suffered by Russians in their Great Patriotic War continue to be a part of the Russian psyche and history.

    "If the city falls, nothing can stop the Nazi's from winning the war in the East." That put me off this whole documentary, a huge exaggeration. Yes, the battle for Stalingrad was important and symbolic for the Soviets, but the Germans at this point of the war were having serious logistical issues and were spread extremely thin. It's not like the Soviets would have just gave up if they lost Stalingrad, they still had plenty of reserves and resources at their disposal and would win a war of attrition. It wouldn't have ended if Moscow fell either. Napoleon made that mistake. These kind of documentaries always make it overly dramatic like the Germans could have won any second, but the reality was they never really stood a chance.

The mere fact the Russians could produce these tanks at these numbers while under siege is an amazing fact unto itself. Where do you get your numbers? The Sherman is an American tank, it did fairly well in WWII but the German tanks took a heavy toll on them just as they did on the T-34s. American fighting tactics and terrane kept the Shermans out of major tank battles for the most part such as Kursk, where they wouldn't have done as well as the Panzers. Not sure why you need to be childish about this. Both tanks served very well, they just had different roles. Side note: Not all tank kills are made by other tanks.

    One of the things that always bothers me about these videos is the portrayal of the ranges that these engagements took place at. Most of the battle scenes look like they take place within 50 or 100 yards, where most of them would actually take place at several hundred or even a thousand yards. I just think that it gives a very inaccurate portrayal of armored combat.

      I think that even if they were doing a reenactment with real tanks, you'd still have a problem with camera perspective giving you a false sense pf distance. Only an over head view like a square or hex based video game would show accurate distance.

    I just never bought the idea that if the Germans had captured Stalingrad that nothing was going to stop them from winning in the East. Their supply lines were severely overstretched, and they would have had a very difficult way to transport the oil from the Caucasus. The Russians were producing T-34s at an exponential rate that no matter how many tanks the Germans destroyed, more and more T-34s came.
