Well I bought one in September last year. I just unboxed it a week ago and I have to say it is a thoroughly well thought out radio. I'm very easily frustrated by obvious design faults or otherwise well thought out designs but with instructions that are appalling leaving those features useless. This radio delivers in both aspects. Being able to put the RF Gain and squelch to the auto position with a click, the wide and narrow bandwidth selector, the ability to turn the back light on permanently and the ability to connect an external AM loop antenna (to the already quite good rotating antenna) on the unit make it a winner. Add to that the sound is good, it has bass and treble, the receiver is sensitive and the controls very intuitively arranged. All the usual methods of frequency entry are available and provisions to connect to a stereo amp as well as several external antennas options are a big, big plus. Downsides ?? - a bit expensive and feels a bit cheap but these are niggles considering the performance and fun. Also I have some new HD rechargeable batteries in it and the battery life isn't very good. Maybe the batteries are new old stock and are out of date - I'm not sure, but 2 hrs from 4 freshly charged new D Cell batteries doesn't seem very long to me. I don't mind paying for gear when it performs and this gives me a holiday from my trusty Kenwood R-5000 which drives me insane at times (you have to own one). The Kenwood is good if you like certain frequencies and go to only those frequencies. If you like to 'surf', the Tecsun kills the Kenwood for ease of use. Utterly kills it. I'm an amateur radio operator and I don't get on the air much because I hate the needless bitching. SWL & SSB on this radio may induce me to fire up my rig in the future (that's if the caps haven't leaked since it's been off so long LOL) Out of 10? Fun factor = 10 out of 10. It makes you want to use it becuase everything is so well thought out and the sound is great. Connect headphones and you can listen to FM sereo and turn the stereo off for normal use. I really like mine. Aviation bands come in beautifully esp with headphones. I wonder why I took so long to unbox it?
Thanks Mike for your comments. Shortwave and medium wave dx'ing can offer a lot of relaxation and enjoyment for all ages. Also listening to utilities opens up a whole new world. I have many receivers of all types much to the wifes disgust. I'll enjoy either a communications receiver hooked up to a G5RV or amplified loops or portable receivers using their telescopic antenna random wire antenna. I traveled around the UK in 2016 and enjoyed it greatly. Hope to get back there again. An outstandingly beautiful country! Keep up the listening Mike and thanks again. Cheers..... Phil vk2gjf P.s I'm 62 and a retired Cartographer, loving retirement and radios!
Thanks Phil...Your evaluation of this radio is bang on correct. .I have the grundig Satellit 750 Version of this radio and let me say it has the lowest noise floor of the radios i have and have had. .this is fact - i have the Yaesu frg 7700 and i thought i'd compare the two...i was literally taken back in what the Yaesu received as noise( nothing heard) but on the Grundig there were in fact hams talking (same exact frequency) ..this was on the 80 meter band.. Grundig's noise floor is so much lower than on the Yaesu....I'm so glad i bought this rig...anyone looking into buying this rig be it the Tecsun S2000 overseas model or the USA Version - Grundig 750 (YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED) You'd be amazed in how well it receives and sounds so well to my ears...
I own one of these and I must say for a table top receiver,it has to be the best I have ever owned. It is on a parr with some of my portable receivers aswell. But for many years I relied on my vintage National Panasonic DR/RF 49 as my table top receiver. It was very reliable with no drift. So it was very hard for me to part with it at a radio sale and up grade to the new S2000.But I have never looked back. This is a really superb receiver. The best I have ever owned as far as top of the line receivers are concerned.
I have had one of these radios for about five years here in the UK and have found it superb. I am a SWL with just a random wire antenna slung around the garden. I have received to the west of me Radio Habana and many USA stations, and to the east as far as the Marianas islands where I have received a QSL car. I have received Swaziland radio and many stations from all over europe on the broadcast bands. I have forgotten how many amateur radio operators I have heard chewing the rag from loads of places on the side bands, I should have started a log really, maybe I will. There have been comments about this radio being "deaf" which is nonsense. You have to have a bit of an antenna and not to rely on the whip all the time for tuning around. First thing I do is to tune into the Shannon Volmet and the RAF Volmet to see if things are working OK. This is a good radio receiver.
Hi Frank, Thanks for your comments. Yes they are expensive, I think around $400 here in Australia so you hope for good performance for the money you pay. So far so good with mine. Lovely country Ireland, I really enjoyed the West Coast. Cheers..... Phil
Looks like a good one. Even if it didn't have all the extra features it would still be a good one. Thanks. Look forward to hearing more about your experiences with this one.
Hi Stanley, Always remember that portable receivers are mostly no comparison to a desktop communications receiver with a good antenna system or a good SDR for that matter. Consequently you can't expect top shelf performance but they can be capable of good performance non the less and besides, are a lot of fun. That's why we play with them, for fun and enjoyment! Perhaps you have a faulty unit, chinese radios do have QC issues at times, luckily mine is pretty good. Cheers...... Phil
Thanks for video Phil. I have the Tecsun S2000 here in the UK and I love the radio the more I use it and the more I find out about it. I have a random wire antenna slung around the garden and in the loft. I have also made myself an antenna tuner for the random wire. I also have used my Uniden Bearcat BCT 15x scanner 1300 Discone antenna into the 50 ohm shortwave input and get good shortwave reception all around the place. So far I have listened to Radio Havana and the USA to the west of me, and as far as Trans World Radio Swaziland just last week to the east. Something I found out yesterday was that I can receive the airband with the whip antenna right down by using the discone into the FM antenna input and selecting exterior antenna switch. I wonder being a layman could you explain this to me. The radio is also great for SSB reception. I am experimenting at the moment with making dipoles for different frequencies. I am glad to have taken up SWL in my 75th year and find it a fascinating interesting hobby. Best wishes. Mike UK.
Hi Phil, thanks for a very nice review of your Tecsun S2000. I know Tom is hooked on his - I've watched many of his videos demonstrating strong reception on various signals with great audio. Congrats on this all-rounder. 73! Clint
hi phil thanx for the comments really think the radios overpriced though good fm and am that still short of 300 pounds worth ive it connected to a silver rod antenna i use for cb . shortwaves working slighty better not much side band activity should have check the specs on it limited frequency coverage im in belfast here good luck phil
Hi Joseph? I understand there is a model suitable for the US power requirements. I'd check out Amazon or some of the radio outlets there like C Crane or Universal Radio. If you purchase direct from Chinese suppliers such as Anon.Co, state that you are in the US and need the correct voltage input. Alternatively you can just use batteries which is what I mostly use which negates any possible noise introduced via the ac line. Hope it helps. Cheers........ Phil
Tecsun s-2000 hates circumstances with rain so can not be used outside or it will stop working very soon, also no kitchen circumstances please, keep dry and warm. I hear a lot of electrical disturbness in the receiving to on LW/MW and efen FM (!) If you listen in wide mode in MW the frequency does not respond with real frequency and the stations are received 2 times cause of bad filters, only in narrow its correct. After a few months the turning off the MW/LW ROTATABLE ANTENNE start to give a lot of disturbness in receiving (cause of dust) and needs contactspray and then its okay again for the time beiing. The only thing good in this radio is the very high selectivty and the turning off the LW/MW for good reception and the stereodecoder built-in for the headset on FM. Listen always in ATT highest level for MW. Cannot advise you to buy, very dissepointing and way to expensive (€379) for this poor results. It should not have left the factory untill everything are fixed as mentioned above!! Worthless & annoying radio
THE one i had is ok but the meter was sticking case screws over tightened on top middle now ok,tuner knob sux or as iu call it joy stick without any joy ..jeff..
i have one of these seems ok but vfo knob is a bit of a wobble bucket bfo is a little to sensetive but a good little radio i have had mine for 30hrs just over a day. quite well made not sure about parts if it goes tits up later on .. jeff..
I love more the Satellit Grundig radio better quality sensitivity and great sound sorry to say it but i'm not ashamed Ham about more the 50 years experience gl 73,
What are these bad boys for. I mean what do u pic up. Airplanes? Ships? Police? Navy. I'm some how fascinated as I had a cb 30 years ago I just wanna know wat the deal is. Someone please explain. Like he said drm???
It picks up AM/FM. Short wave and long wave too. SSB which is used by HAM radio. I think this can also receive other bands used in aviation etc but I’m unsure, I don’t own one. This radio is used to listen to shortwave by many, as demonstrated in this video. Short wave broadcasts can be heard across the globe. Many smaller radios are capable SW receivers but may not have the features this radio has. LW is a bit harder to find in receivers. It’s pretty obsolete here in Australia. But if one wanted to hear it elsewhere in the world this radio offers that somewhat niche ability.
Tecsun dropped the ball with this one . Heres why = My previous radio is a Tecsun PL-600 ~ A great little radio that even has a one key charging circuit whic charges the batteries when not using the radio. This is a key feature NOT included on the S-2000. I even contacted Tecsun Australia and asked them why this feature was omitted on the S-2000 ,and they couldnt give me an answer. Next time i want to buy a radio with this feature I definitely won't be buying Tecsun.
Hi, that's a fair enough comment but as I don't use rechargeable batteries, only alkalines, it makes no difference to my thoughts. Personally, I don't like inbuilt recharging, an external unit is the way to go for me if ever I use devices with rechargeable batteries however everyone has their own preferences so hopefully manufacturers will take heed of requests. Cheers..... Phil
G'Day Frank, Sounds like ur disappointed wirh your S-2000. Perhaps you were unfortunate to get a lemon. QC on Chinese electonics can be a bit flaky at times so if you can, see if you can return it for another. Having said that, most of the reviews are based on what's available on the market today. Unfortunately the days of the excellent portable Sonys and Panasonics are gone and hobbiests are constrained to whats available now. Of course you can't compare any portable to a good communications receiver with a good antenna system however you'll get good results from them with external antennas ( subject to overloading), and they are fun. Hope you can sort it out. Cheers...... Phil vk2gjf
I am very disapointed with the amount of money this radio has cost me.I also own a Redsun RP-2100 which is an excellent radio that easily ouperforms the s-2000 because the s-2000 is a bit deaf even with a dipole antenna. The Redsun radio has a battery charge feature which works by pressing the preset button on the keypad when the radio is turned of but plugged into the mains. The Tecsun s-2000 dissapointingly doesn't have this feature. I even emailed Tecsun Australia and asked them about this lack of feature and they couldn't give me an answer. A warning to any prospective buyers is when buying ANY BRAND of shortwave recievers is to thoroughly examine the radio's features unless you want to purchsase a lemon like the S-2000. I would give it only 2.5 stars out of 10.

Hi Phil thanks for the review,I hop to buy a Tecsun 2000 soon.
Thanks Derek, you won't be disappointed with the Tecsun. Good luck with your purchase.

Yeah "Tecsun" right lmao. Just a rebranded Eton Satellit 750. So stupiiiiid.
I had one and I found it was a bit deaf. Also the volume went on mine. So I would give this one a miss. Thanks for your review
Soun like you got a broke wun nigga..
A nice looking unit to be sure :)

So you say is the best radio? or there is more better than TECSUN s2000?? Thanks 🙏
Is there a internal "standby battery " to keep the clock running when the Mains Power is removed ( and no D size batteries installed ) ?
