The lunar parallel to charlie is wagstaff, not Alter. Alter is one of "Them" much like the Tenebrau (the name has been revealed in the new stage play). Charlie and Wagstaff are both trying to harness power of an eldrich being and in the process making them more powerful Charlie/Metheus is the shadowy enabler of Tenebrau Wagstaff is the lunatic enabler of Alter
even if charlie where defeated by alter not much would changue anyways, them or that thing behind the portal (the gate way in the atrium) is still there and we didnt even see what they are exactly, the shadow creatures as far as i know are just the people from the ruins who got turn into that by nightmare fuel, it probably would decrease the influence of the shadows in the constant, however all nigthmare fuel related stuff would simply continue to exist
It would be funny if Klei made DST basicaly among us, where Worwmoods secretly had to troll/kill shadow aligned survivors. But only true Wormwood mains know...
My dream scenario Charlie will get betrayed by shadows and then she with surivivors would fight them, and of course, win. Wagstaff with survivors would fight agaisnt Alter, and of course, win. Then Webber will get cured, and a wormwood with WX would finally go away. Charlie and Maxwell would marry. And survivors would inhabit all 3 territories of RoG hamlet and shipwreck. Or start trevelling, a perfect scenarion to start NewHome
Alter is clearly the right side Alter doesnt make anyone suffer, or brings anyone into the constant Alter doesnt inherently do anything bad to survivors by himself, the only thing he did is sending celestial champion to survivors Alter doesnt convert anything himself, most likely its just the properties of the moon changing things, and only weird rift gestalts actually take things over. Alter's intentions arent really clear, but he doesnt seem hostile. Also consider that lunar things only convert either dead or not really alive things into lunar variants, so maybe he is actually trying to help, just not only the survivors (Also alter doesnt kill anyone just because they are in the dark or light,unlike charlie. )

Why They do anything is pretty much a mystery, and whether their actions are simply motivated by nature or by an actual altruistic/sadistic personality is not known to the survivors. The real question boils down to whether you trust Wagstaff or Charlie more, as they are the two that are enabling both Alter and Tenebrau to become more destructive and more involved. In fact, you probably shouldn't trust either of them, as they are each literally causing the world to unravel as rifts tear holes in reality.

this may be true, we don't exactly know what would happen if the nightmare throne was destroyed, it could be one big fluke!
