    Highly recommend reaming the guide after hammering. Apart from that a perfect job

    I heated my heads in the oven at 200c before removing guides with a hammer and punch, new guides in the freezer first before installing in a preheated head, worked for me, I didn’t have an air hammer, would have made it so much easier and cooler! 😆

    Ive pressed out lots of these guides from the bottom with no problems ,also would be wise to warm the head before removing and installing a bronze guide in a aluminium casting , First time ive seen guides fitted with an air hammer but it looked like it got the job done ok ,

    So I've just installed some valve drives and the valves no longer fit and I'm planning on reading them but I don't want to ring them too big and start burning oil do I bring them 001 over or to the exact size of the valve stem

    Ben: what about the new guides in the freezer? I've used this technic for other things. Thanks again!

    Hello,
    Well done!
    Just a note... please please be very careful with the brass swarf..it is unbelievably sharp.. and will stay in your finger a long time..
    I think a reshoot of the reaming is needed :)
    Cordialement,

      Hello John, Yes you are correct, I total re-shoot and nicely edited video would be much better but its not something i plan on doing again in a rush. I obviously couldn't have done it without your help!

    Hi Ben. awesome video. i would like to ask whats is the risk when you install the valve back in? the alignment? precise straight line? and when do u stop? I read in the manual n it sounds complicated but ur video make it super easy :)

    looks a good vid ...just a bit concerned about cracks forming as u use airhammer ..so wonder if it would be better to heat head in oven and stick guide in fridge then use either press or airhammer ...to give less stress on head

      @benlawlor85  10 лет назад +1

      yeah you could do it that way if you wanted to. Ive not had any issues with this engine so far.

    WOW man you did it so NICE. How do you remove and install new valve seats? do you buy the valve seats? or make them?

    • @benlawlor85
      @benlawlor85  8 лет назад +1

      not a clue mate the seats were fine. just lapped new valves in.

    How do you make sure you get the valves without the step to the correct depth? Also, is the air hammer essential or can they be tapped in with a punch and hammer? Do the guides have to be reamed afterwards? 😀

    • @benlawlor85
      @benlawlor85  10 лет назад +2

      HI sorry only just seen this. Air hammer is needed as using a hammer is too much of a 'blow' force. Correct depth you are supposed to use washers etc around the guide. i just turned force on air hammer down and went slow. probs not perfect but it works.

    • @benlawlor85
      @benlawlor85  10 лет назад +1

      and yes guides need to be reamed afterwards, just now uploading a how to on the reaming.

      +enginemaxcarb. The heads had been cleaned in parafin, and many people have used the technique i used and had no problems. I did a 700 mile round trip last week in teh van an managed to get about 23mpg not bad for a 34yr old 2l CU. these engines are simple. Dont over complicate it.

    • @benlawlor85
      @benlawlor85  9 лет назад +3

      Next time ill upload a 20min video of cleaning the heads in parafin. Lol go troll somewhere else mate. You probably dont know one end of a vw engine from the other. This technique works and has been used by many people.

    love it mate! really helpful. Valve guides I've got are the same but they've all got a ridge inside toward one of the ends.Would this ridge go toward the cylinder or the spring do you reckon?

    • @benlawlor85
      @benlawlor85  7 лет назад

      70boss351 ridge goes on the top stops it going all the way through.

    • @70boss351
      @70boss351 7 лет назад

      Oh I'm guessing the outside ridge prevents that right? mines don't have that one. Mines have a notch (sorry english is not my first language, I said ridge before) This notch is inside toward one of the ends only. Thanks

    don't just go replacing guides without re grinding your valve seats! if a motor has any kind of performance what so ever. you need to make the seat concentric to the guide! i bet that motor does terrible on leak a down test unless he got very lucky.
