See the way they're marketing this laptop makes me upset though. Most high in laptops let you replace everything that they let you replace. The only differences is, you get to customize what ports you're using and it's a little easier to take apart.
Can you make test on ps 2 slim old model.. Do as you did before on ps 4 fat if you remember.. When you pitted it on bag and turn it on until gave you warning to turn it off.. Make this test please
I disagree, it takes up a lot of space, cost and really limits the number off ports effectively to 3 (assuming you want to charge the thing). Most laptops just offer a lot more io out of the box than that. In practice I see the situations where 4 of these modules offer you something in terms of io a traditional does not not comming up very often. if you want to charge, use a mouse, display out, you really only have one port for that usb stick you may want to use. Where a regular laptop would still have ports to spare.
Maybe they should have different Beginner > Intermediate > Advanced kits so you can choose the difficulty of DIY! This is VERY refreshing to see, I don't think I've personally ever seen it. I think this could be a HUGE game changer. Amazing video Steve :)
This is also what I would like to see but I would doubt it. Main reasons being storage, shipping and packaging. Storage wise, the more loose/boxed parts the more storage space it would take up in warehouse and in shipping package volume. The safest way to ship the motherboard, is installed. Yes it would take time to install it but then (maybe slightly less time) it would still take time to safely package large delicate items like the motherboard. Same for the lithium battery, it's far easier and cheaper to ship an item with an installed lithium then it would be to ship lithium battery spare parts.

I went on to get even more involved in tech teardowns and repair after that, and I even have a weekend job as a repair technician now. Big thanks to you and this channel for helping give me that push to this industry that I love so much. P.S. - I’m VERY excited about this laptop, and I put an order in about a month ago. I hope Framework succeeds as a company and that other companies take inspiration from them. I'm buying one of these for my daughter for college next year. If something goes bad, it can be fixed quickly by any 3rd party repair place. She won't have to bring it home, ship it somewhere, or get burned by the Apple Genius Bar
The used part buyback/exchange really shows how serious they are. Most parts, even the motherboards could end up being used by a series of owners until they are good and dead. Yeah, they take a cut each time, but this should be less wasteful and they gotta make up for not "Apple-ing" people into buying a new device every year.

On the plus side of their design, you aren't even restricted to using their marketplace (I would guess, correct me if I'm wrong?) so while it's great for them to get that extra income, you aren't forced to depend on them (especially important in areas they aren't in yet!) ...on the note of areas they're not in yet, still gonna whine about them not being in the UK yet 😭
This seems super interesting to me. The ports on the back are a fricking game changer. One port dies and you can swap in a new one in seconds? That's awesome.
Framework has done a interview with Linus and told him that it was very hard to have a more barebones version when it came to logistics. I’m very excited to see where they end up going as they continue innovating with more powerful computers.

The major thing I’d like to see, is an upgradable graphics card. It looks awesome otherwise, but I’d want decent graphics in a laptop. Not even for gaming, I used to have a great laptop, but it didn’t like h264 video.
Any upgradable GPU would be a part of the replaceable mainboard, so if Framework do release an upgrade with that feature, you can swap it out without having to throw the hole unit away.
Those USB c add on cards on the sides connect directly to the pci lanes just like a x16 socket on desktop boards. So no real reason they can't make a gpu card later on of there is demand for it.
I really like this. I agree though a DIY Pro Kit with 0 preassembly would be cool. That way you can make sure it has the perfect amount of thermal paste and all..... My current laptop had a cooling fan start to go out right after the warranty expired. Fortunately I was able to scavenge up a replacement on ebay but this is so much better. My only concern was it looks like its cheap and plastic-y so the fact that you say it feels premium is good. I will probably be getting this when I am ready to replace my laptop.

Shame they have no AMD options and atleast a 14" display, (preferably 15.6) then I would definitely go for one. What an amazing idea. Just hope one day they give these options, and ship to the UK.

Nice product. DIY laptops have been a "new thing" every few years, for decades now, but these products today mean a lot more than they have in the past. I'd love some further standardization so that laptops could be more easily built like PCs (Including different shells for different features and power levels), but I doubt that will ever become a thing.

I was really hoping they would just send me a box with all the parts but unfortunately it was just the easy stuff. Still fun but not as much as it would have been.
Laptop CPUs are always surface-mounted, as far as I know, so that's something no normal user can deal with. That being the case, it's all the same for the mobo to be already in, along with the cooler. Maybe the shop doesn't have different battery options either, since the battery was pre-installed in as well. Or maybe there're two levels for the customisable component integration: those the shop will always install no matter what and those they necessarily won't. I suppose they could install everything if the customer paid for it.
I remember a few companies trying “build your own laptop” in the past. The names are escaping me at the moment. Would be cool if you could find one and compare it.
@@CSab-ui2jt ya I remember the upgradable alienwares. But there was a laptop in the early 2000’s that was a case with a motherboard and screen. The end user had to install the cpu gpu and all other components. You could chose from a list of parts on their website and they would send you a box of parts with the laptop case.
This is also why I feel Dell deserves a shout out. Sure, they don't necessarily build their computer with repair solely in mind, but they DO make repair manuals publicly available AND as far as I know haven't stopped people from selling spare parts to their machines like a certain fruit company has. But the Framework definitely looks great and built from the ground up for this and that's really cool. I hope they really take off.
I'm hoping that motherboard/CPU and screen upgrades/replacements will be available as technology progresses. If they will provide schematics and use non-proprietary components on their motherboards that would be a plus.

Better than most, but AFAIK they don't sell a T-series ThinkPad anymore without at least one soldered RAM slot, which undermines upgradeability/repairability quite a lot.
If this catches and people are serious of protecting the environment, then we should back this company up. Chip Manufacturers especially CPU, can develop a CPU that can be removable for laptops and have users be able to upgrade or replace their CPU without removing the whole motherboard, something Dave2D touched upon.

Wow, this product seems pretty awesome. I never need a laptop so I'll never be in the market but if they make gaming rig building easy and cheap to build, repair, that would be amazing.
I only wish Framework had gaming spec parts available for their kits! At this point in my life, I live abroad and don't want to be weighed down by a big bulky tower, but I also want to game from time to time. But I'm also tired of high-end gaming laptops becoming obsolete for new release games within two years. It would be nice to have a machine that's easy to upgrade when needed, because right now that's hardly an option with gaming laptops on the market.

Steve, have you ever tried repairing UE Boom Bluetooth speakers? They're a super cool speaker and I see several UE Boom 2's on ebay that need fixing, so might be a good video.
Wow super nice, this way you can just add and remove stuff as you need, and not a lot of breaking smalls parts or losing screws, I will say I will like to see the performance, like ok can it handle development software like Visual Studio Community or an Android Studio development environment, there is were my performance issue is on putting money to buy something like and HP Z version laptop as an example or an IBM Thinkpad, so can it handle heavy work or is just for school projects stuff.
One thing I'd like to point out is that you are supposed to remove the keyboard panel after un-doing all the screws and then you detach the ribbon cable from the motherboard and not the keyboard side. There's a handy pull tab for easier removal of cable.
Looks really cool except the vents on the bottom which could be blocked if you use this on anything other than a hard surface. Say your lap? Other than that, I love the replaceable ports. Great idea.

This is the first time in quite a while that I've actually considered purchasing a Windows laptop. You sold me on it, man!
I'm not sure but I would assume they probably have or will get soon Linux drivers.

Think it is very difficult to such an tiny graphics card. Because normally the graphics card is soldered onto the board so it takes up as little space

4:50 Those are antennas. It does not matter which antenna is connected to what connector, they will serve their purpose either way.
2:04 - I mean; for Lenovo ThinkPad laptops, they give pretty detailed repair guides and sell components for most repairs you'd want to do yourself. :)

I only wish Framework had gaming spec parts available for their kits! At this point in my life, I live abroad and don't want to be weighed down by a big bulky tower, but I also want to game from time to time. But I'm also tired of high-end gaming laptops becoming obsolete for new release games within two years. It would be nice to have a machine that's easy to upgrade when needed, because right now that's hardly an option with gaming laptops on the market.

Thanks for posting the video. This is a very Interesting company. Love the idea of swappable ports. Nice to have GPU, CPU, and screen interchangeable parts as well. Cool concept, but it seemed a bit pricy for what you get.

Steve, have you ever tried repairing UE Boom Bluetooth speakers? They're a super cool speaker and I see several UE Boom 2's on ebay that need fixing, so might be a good video.
There should be a performance test? One built in to run to see if was assembled properly. Otherwise what are the CineBench test results?

Wow super nice, this way you can just add and remove stuff as you need, and not a lot of breaking smalls parts or losing screws, I will say I will like to see the performance, like ok can it handle development software like Visual Studio Community or an Android Studio development environment, there is were my performance issue is on putting money to buy something like and HP Z version laptop as an example or an IBM Thinkpad, so can it handle heavy work or is just for school projects stuff.
One thing I'd like to point out is that you are supposed to remove the keyboard panel after un-doing all the screws and then you detach the ribbon cable from the motherboard and not the keyboard side. There's a handy pull tab for easier removal of cable.

Looks really cool except the vents on the bottom which could be blocked if you use this on anything other than a hard surface. Say your lap? Other than that, I love the replaceable ports. Great idea.
I would like to see you take it apart to see how hard/easy is it when need to get clean.

Hi Steve, very nice video again. Love this laptop and the way they make it so much easier to replace of just change parts. Makes me think of project ara or fairphone. Hope this product will make big vendors change their way of thinking. Also when we all repair stuff we also shrink garbage which is also good. Keep up the good work and have a good one.
