Just so everyone knows, this is just a port of the pc / ps3 remaster, which is just a port of the ps2 version. My point? The gamecube version ran at 60 frames per second and is still to this day the definitive way to play the game. After playing it on gamecube playing any of the remaster feels painful to say the least. The reason this game is locked to 30 frames (like every other port...) is because these ports have been based on the PS2 version of Symphonia, which only was released in Japan. They've never used the GCN version cause, at this point, we (the Tales of community) think Bamco just lost the GCN source code. Hopefully they drop some patches, or this will be the last BandaiNamco remaster I purchase
I was a 14 year old Kid back then. Time flew so fast This Game was so amazing to Play back then Tales of symphonia is definitely one of the best in the series
Nice to see this one landing on Switch, I might get it when it gets on sale. And as to you being too harsh in your reviews, I was actually thinking while listening to this video that you guys are among the very few reviewers who cover all aspects of a game, good or bad, and you have a knack for highlighting the small things that make a difference. Also love your detailed rating system which makes a lot more sense than the usual "10/10" other reviewers give. So great job, and as far as I'm concerned you don't need to change a thing!
short remark: your 60fps vs 30 fps comparison at 1:39 doesn't make any sense for the video, because the RUclips video only has 30 fps, so we can't see the difference.
I preordered the physical of this, having never played it, I thought it’s would be a safe bet. Loved Vesperia, Arise, Berseria… so I think I may like this one as well..
Tales of symphonia was one of the first games I bought myself as a teen and made me a lifelong tales fan. From what I had seen of trailers I was pretty skeptical of picking this up and this review kind of confirms it for me. I love this game I really do, but not sure the value is really here as a remaster. Maybe if my GameCube breaks and I can't replay it there I'll change my mind but not sure I will otherwise.
Same. I've bought the game for 5 bucks o Steam not long ago. It has a unofficial 'patch' for HDband some other improvements. I will gobpkay that instead of this.
One of the best JRPG ever ! The story, Motoi Sakuraba's sound track, the combat system hard to master... And Kratos Aurion... !! Not sure I'll buy it for the 3rd time but... Thanks for this review :) Sylvain
Getting to play it on the go is a plus for me. A lazy remaster for sure. Ah well. It's been a while since i've played it. So i'll still get it at some point
Re-watched the review after wanting to get into the Tales series. Thanks for writing this. Besidesthe remaster there are other affordable options. The GC version and Chronicles bundle on PS3 are not too expensive.
I'm still divided about this game... everyone says it has terrible performance issues for a game of its age and that the original performed far better. I never got to play the original unfortunately, so I was super excited when I heard of this remaster, but all these performance claims have me questioning on whether I should add it to my collection or not... For a Remaster, it seems it fell rather flat in comparison to other remastered titles out there.
It’s sad that an incredible gem of a game like this…is pushed out in this condition. Hopefully the developers work to resolve the issues with a patch asap….and this isn’t just a horrid low effort cash grab.
You know what , I think the source material was lost at some point and this is the only version they have access too... just like FFVIII used to be lost media until they redid a lot of the stuff and retrieve some assets.
@@migovas1483 It’s possible that’s true, but regardless this game shouldn’t have been labeled “remastered.” The game runs worse now than it has on any other platform…so remaster doesn’t really make sense lol. There are some seriously rough edges on this port, which I hope the devs work out.
@@Derkman99 Totally agree, is a very lazy 'adaptation', I would say because it is a downgrade compared to the 480p version from the NGC, which had nice clear outlines, 60FPS, defocus pass, and so on, I was so disappointed with the PS3 version, but now is clear the first NGC game is long gone... People who did not see the original will never know. Sad .
@@migovas1483the source material could never be lost. Just rom dump from disc and data mine the god damn game. Seems more of a unity/unreal remake to give this many problems.
As someone who has completed the original multiple times: I don't think I'll rush to play this version any time soon. Just too many great new games out right now or coming soon to Switch!
It’s quite daring of them to release this port, because it ain’t a remaster, for full price after having both Symphonia games on the PS3 for a better price. I want this and basically every old school game on Switch but I can’t in good conscience support this release. The consumer should really vote with their wallet here. If it was 20~30 bucks I could excuse this barebones port but for the price where it sits, it’s highway robbery.
Yeah with the release so close to metroid prime and the quality of that remastered, it does not do this game any favors. Was excited for this one but i think i might wait for a hefty sale like the one tales of vesperia gets from time to time. Thanks for the review guys!!
6:20 that camera "issue" on the world map is a deliberate game design element. They could've elaborated on it better, but the gist is that the party needs to find the guidestones littered throughout the world to establish safer travels. You can make use of holy bottles to counter this but it gets rather pricey early on in the game.
The camera being right up the characters butt and moving so you can't see more than a couple feet is a horrible "game design element". Just admit the game didn't age well and move on.
Think I might pick this one up on sale, everyone says it’s a classic and I’m a massive fan of the other Tales games I’ve played! Shame the actual remaster isn’t stellar though!
I remember being really excited for this title back when it released on the Gamecube after playing Tales of Destiny on the PS1. However, I could never complete the game or feel any excitement for it, mainly because I never felt anything for the characters or the story itself. The game was very much a stereotypical JRPG, both in terms of characters and story (but it had a fun fighting system). I think major difference to Tales of Destiny was how the games tackle the story, take the intro as an example, In Tales of Symphonia: - You are Loyd, a swordsman with complete lack of personality, caught sleeping in the middle of class, in a small boring village. You get a history lesson of the game's story, why Colette is the chosen one and why you have to visit endless amounts of temples throughout the game to "save the world" from the evil "desians" Compare this to Tales of Destiny: - You're Stahn, a stowaway (!!!) on a flying dragon ship (!!!). You are found and captured by the guards, tortured and assigned to swab the deck.... Then suddenly monsters appear out of the blue, viciously attacking the crew (!!!). They are searching for a "specific item" (!!!), you try to save yourself by locating a weapon. You find a sword, and it starts talking to you (!!!), his name is Dynmlos and he helps you to escape. You fight your way through to the escape pod which crashes down in a snowy forest (!!!), Stahn crawls out, passing out as Dynmlos screams your name (!!!).... Later you wake up in a cabin in the middle of nowhere. not knowing where the game will take you... O_O The game has an instant hook and this is how the game continues, you don't know what's next, there's no exposition of a "legend" or a "mission" you just find yourself in circumstances that are interesting, with funny characters and a lot of personality. I love Tales of Destiny. I would argue it's the best "tales" game out there, and I don't get why Namco is re-releasing tales of Symphonia all the time, perhaps because it's the only old-school game they can have the source code for.
@@mechadeka In fact, I wrote it out clearly. I found the base premise of the games story and characters so bland that I have never got hooked to the game, never finnished it. And believe me, I tried, after trying to get into the game for a third time and I started yawning, I caved in and watched re-telling of the whole story on RUclips. Sure, it's not the same as playing the game. But it became abundantly clear to me why I personally found the characters, world, story, pacing, plot twists etc. in Tales of Destiny to be 100x better. I have also re-watched a lot of the in-game dialogue and banter between the characters, and the lack of personality is just mind boggling to me. The characters are just cookie cut stereotypes of jrpg characters. I just want me to skip through every single dialogue (which doesn't happen, I am one of those people who enjoy reading excessively in video games). In Tales of Destiny I was actually smiling, laughing and enjoying myself. In Symphonia I got extremely bored quickly by both the characters and the base premise of the game. It's just a personal opinion though. you don't have to agree with it, we all have different tastes... If you haven't played Tales of Destiny, I recommend you do. :)
Gamecube also had party costumes, that wasn't a new addition for Chronicles. Chronicles simply added more costumes from the Tales games that came after Symphonia. Same with compound Unison attacks like Pow Blade, those were also in GCN. ruclips.net/video/0QP_1rKCfDg/видео.html
Yep and then they ported it and there’s some speculation there’s an issue with the source odd availability or some such of the GC version hmmm I dunno they could have just emulated it and it would be preferable (minus the widescreen support)
As someone who only knows these types of games through remasters of remakes, should someone like me go back and try to replay them or just stick with these versions? That's why I subscribe to you guys and others to help me with these purchases.
I've always found the audio quality on switch games hit or miss especially for any kind of VA either the music and other sounds are way too loud for me to understand what the characters are saying or the audio mixing is just way too low even when I max out my switch's volume so this doesn't surprise me
I have played 60 hrs of this game 3 times...each time in the middle of my playthru I relocated and the temp difference corrupted the save file on GC memory card. Would love to actually see the end of this game haha
Goodness I know that feeling had many hours on fire emblem path of radiance wind waker smash melee and so on on my game cube but one day while playing melee after some years my memory card had a complete melt down and deleted all saves from my memory card on every game it sucked and now melee won't even save anymore lol
@@Abysslover91 oh you win for sure. That's rough! There are some things about modern gaming I don't love but moving away from memory cards has been a better advancement than improved graphics for me, haha.
In the Remaster one thing I think they could have done is added more voice to the game like in the skits instead of just having their moths move and we have to read the text. They did that with Tales of Vesperia. The skits in that game were all voiced. The other thing that I'm also wondering about is that when Symphonia was released on the GameCube it was on two discs. Each of those discs only hold 1.76 GB of storage so a total of 3.52 GB. On the Switch the file size is over 10 GB to download. If it's the exact same game as on GameCube, then why is the file size on the Switch over three times more? With it being that much bigger on the Switch, it sounds like there should be a whole hell of a lot more content to the Switch version. If not, then why the massive file size compared to the GameCube? Hope someone can fill me in on that one because to me that file size difference makes no sense at all.
If they scaled up textures to make them look more crisp with the higher resolution, that will take a considerable amount of space without adding content.
Definitely going to get this when it's on sale. I don't need it right away since I never got to play it really on the GameCube so I can wait a little longer once there's a patch in the price is a little cheaper for my liking
Love how successful this channel has been so quickly. This happens when you got great content and amazing people!! Thanks for all you do switch up crew!!
I love this game so much. My username has Wilder in it because of this game. I owe a lot of my personality, maturity, and outlook to this game and Dawn of the New World. I met my girlfriend of 12 years now thanks to this game. My only, and biggest complaint of this remaster is that it's once again leaving the Sequel in the wind. There are so many Tales games out there, with such amazing characters, themes, stories, and gameplay all of which resonate with so many people... and only 5 are available on modern platforms. Symphonia, Vesperia, Zesteria, Berseria and Arise. It makes me sad to see Phantasia, Destiny, Rebirth, Eternia, Legendia, Abyss, Innocence, Hearts/Hearts R, Graces/Graces F, even Xillia and Xillia 2 just gone, forgotten, obsolete and lost to past generations while Symphonia can get remastered/re-released twice in two decades.
I've been looking forward to this one because when I played it back in the day, I was borrowing from a friend but had to give it back right when I had gotten to the end of the first disc. Looks like I'll have to wait a bit longer and hold off for a sale, and probably pick up a physical copy. Great review!
I don’t remember why I never gave this game a shot on the GameCube but nowadays the combat system looks way more appealing to me now compared to the gamer I was at the time! Still, I will likely wait until this sees a price drop considering the lack of justification for making this a full price game! The bright side is that given Nintendo’s tendency to give great discounts for their ports/remasters/collection titles, I expect we’ll get a decent price drop in due time!
I'll wait for a sale. Mostly cause I still have a sizeable backlog of games. Not the best way to celebrate such a milestone for one of the most important games in the series but it be that way sometimes. Let's hope they announce the next Tales game soon.
Never played or even heard of it. I don’t mind playing it in a more true-to-the-original style, almost like playing a retro game as it was. It is a bummer it’s stuck at 30fps when I don’t think anyone would doubt that a game like this as such smaller scale should be able to lock out at 60 FPS when we have the crazy technical games on the switch that are out now.
Thanks for the video guys! I had a friend who was a big fan of the GameCube version, so I was looking forward to it, but based on the visuals, etc... I think I will still end up getting this one, but I'm not planning on it until it's on a decent sale
When I'm immersed in my favorite games, the last thing I think about is frame rate. That said, the fact this isn't 60fps is a bit telling of their efforts in "remastering" this game.
I would have been curious to know how the game compares to the Steam version. I'm hesitant of playing it again, because of backlog. I've played it with a friend back in the day, but as a support character. I'm interested to experience the gameplay of Lloyd, but is it enough to make me play this game now, as I have probably 100 games waiting to be played? I'm still not sure.
It may have it's issues and it's no where near as pretty as the Metroid Prime remaster, but I love this game and I'll be adding this to my collection so it can sit next to my GC copy.
I'd like to point out that this game runs at 30fps with slowdown compared to the gamecubes 60fps. Also the graphics seem to be broken as the cell shading effect seems to sometimes apply to characters but most of the time it doesnt and it looks very bad. I would say people should steer clear of this version unless you absolutely cant ever in the future play the gamecube version either by emulation or the original.
I was just listening to the video so I didn't see the part where you compared it to the GameCube version so I was just trying to specify. Also you do say the character models were improved slightly but they do have that broken effect I mentioned that sometimes shows up which I think makes them look worse.
While I agree with you, it’s worth mentioning that only the NTSC GameCube version runs at 60 fps if I remember correctly. The PAL GameCube version is also only running at 30 fps.
@@MaI2Me interesting I wonder why it runs that low rather than 50 like most pal games would. What a weird time that was poor European gamers. That being said the graphics being completely busted just kill this rerelease for me it looks so bad.
Honestly this is one of my favorite games so when switch had the remastered version. I didn’t care about FPS, lag, resolution, or glitches…….i wanted this game and I STILL LOVE IT
I'm late to the tales series, I discovered Tales of vesperia on the PS4, loved it so much bought it on switch, also played tales of Arise, so I have already pre ordered this, looking forward to it even if it will be a dated experience
One of the best storylines, the reason why tales is now popular in the west mostly, this time ot lacks a few visuals like the broken screen before combat, but awesome game!
This and the PS3 version are based on the PS2 version of the game (which is also locked at 30fps). The code was lost for the GC version, and no one was willing to fund the work to bring it back (all versions of this game on any console/PC that is not the GC run at 30fps). Porting and selling "remasters" is easier (unfortunately).
I missed this game back in the day and I’m currently patiently waiting for this game… a couple more days and it’s MINE…. Tales of Symphonia is timeless but this release seems unnecessary especially when they release a remaster of this and it’s sequel Dawn of A New World in one package just a decade ago. Why not just port that version instead? I think Tales fans would’ve been more excited if they would had remastered Tales of Abyss, Legendia, or bring over Tales of Rebirth for the first time ever. Hell even Tales of Graces is still stick on PS3 purgatory, re-release that.
“Remaster” is such a vague term… some of them are pants, basically the original game with slight graphical improvements, whilst others end up being the definitive version over the original. Mainly depends on how much the developers care!
I'll still purchase the game. I've always wanted to experience Symphonia. I've heard amazing things about Symphonia. And who knows, maybe they will have worked on it by the time I do purchase it. Frankly I'm a bit bummed out that they seem to forget Tales of the Abyss is well loved but hard to access these days. I for one have wanted to play it for quite a while, but never have been able to snag a PS2 or 3DS copy, and since it's not digital I couldn't just get in the 3DS eShop before it closes or on Homebrew (dunno if there's a miracle worker out there who made it available through Homebrew). I really do hope it gets a decent remaster/remake on Switch soon!
Wow review standards for remasters skyrocketed after Metroid prime remastered release and that’s a good thing! I hope it will set a new quality level for remasters. That’s why I won’t get this one even though I never played it(only played arise and vesperia form the series)

Great game for sure - needs a little more TLC for me! Mark

As someone who has waited this long to play it, I'm fine with it being a basic port. Thanks for the great review.

Re-watched the review after wanting to get into the Tales series. Thanks for writing this. Besidesthe remaster there are other affordable options. The GC version and Chronicles bundle on PS3 are not too expensive.
I remember playing this back in the day. Great game.
For sure mate🎉
Any chance we can get a Skies of Arcadia remaster for the Switch?
Sad .
@@migovas1483 Definitely agree pal! The original is such a classic!
I'll wait for sale too...
Yeah it’s a shame really, they could have at least ported the 60fps GameCube version…
Welp im not an rpg/jrpg guy
But i do watch every video you upload, keep making your contant, sometimes you make my day
Really do appreciate it mate
6:20 that camera "issue" on the world map is a deliberate game design element. They could've elaborated on it better, but the gist is that the party needs to find the guidestones littered throughout the world to establish safer travels. You can make use of holy bottles to counter this but it gets rather pricey early on in the game.
The camera being right up the characters butt and moving so you can't see more than a couple feet is a horrible "game design element".
Just admit the game didn't age well and move on.
I still have the game cube version. Man I hope they can fix this with a patch or something. No classics should ever be ruined like this

What’s with the black background in menus ? That’s not right…..
I think major difference to Tales of Destiny was how the games tackle the story, take the intro as an example, In Tales of Symphonia:
- You are Loyd, a swordsman with complete lack of personality, caught sleeping in the middle of class, in a small boring village. You get a history lesson of the game's story, why Colette is the chosen one and why you have to visit endless amounts of temples throughout the game to "save the world" from the evil "desians"
Compare this to Tales of Destiny:
- You're Stahn, a stowaway (!!!) on a flying dragon ship (!!!). O_O
The game has an instant hook and this is how the game continues, you don't know what's next, there's no exposition of a "legend" or a "mission" you just find yourself in circumstances that are interesting, with funny characters and a lot of personality. I love Tales of Destiny. I would argue it's the best "tales" game out there, and I don't get why Namco is re-releasing tales of Symphonia all the time, perhaps because it's the only old-school game they can have the source code for.
It's blatantly obvious you never actually finished Symphonia. Stop trying.
Wow, I haven’t seen this game in so long.. bring back memories.. wasn’t one of my favorite games on GameCube.. cool review Mark😊

Gamecube also had party costumes, that wasn't a new addition for Chronicles. Chronicles simply added more costumes from the Tales games that came after Symphonia. Same with compound Unison attacks like Pow Blade, those were also in GCN.

I've always found the audio quality on switch games hit or miss especially for any kind of VA either the music and other sounds are way too loud for me to understand what the characters are saying or the audio mixing is just way too low even when I max out my switch's volume so this doesn't surprise me

Grabbing at $20-30. I have it on GameCube but with all new TV’s it’s a hassle to play on old school consoles.
Why doesnt this version have the initial Guy and Luke costumes from Tales of the Abyss for Lloyd and Genis?

It's all in the video :)

What are those joy cons
Why did they remaster based on the PS2 30fps rather than the Gamecube 60fps version????
Metroid Prime set the new standard for switch remasters both quality wise and cost wise. Really high too.
Doesn’t Vesperia run at 60 on Switch?
