ALIENWARE 17R4 i7 7820hk / GTX 1080 - HOW HOT DOES IT GET?

  • Alienware say they fixed the issues that plagued the Skylake model i7 6820hk and offer this GTX 1080 gaming model at a good price of about $2300. I set out to see what the temperatures are like and whether any throttling affects performance.
    I compare it to the Asus G701vi (7th gen) and MSI GT73VR (6th gen) as well as the 6th gen AW17 r4.

    It's pathetic these company's release these laptops with this kind of cooling and even more pathetic the people who defend them on the forums by saying "just repaste". If I spend over 2k on a laptop I shouldn't have to do their job for them...

      MaglioWoW yes, I agree with you. They offered me $100 to keep it.. I just don't understand why they don't put the best possible paste on these in the first place. Difference in price is minimal.

      Asus gl702vs from gentech pc with a free upgrade to liquid ultra and an upgrade to a 960 Evo. The screen on this laptop is leaps and bounds nicer than the Alienware 17...and the whole thing runs cool and silent. OCCT only gets to about 65° compared to 85-90° of the Alienware. The build quality isn't as superb, but all the things I care about are much better, and it's half the weight! Happy with my choice. Thanks for asking :)

    Thank you for all your hard work to review all the laptops you have. When I plugged my 15r3 intoy AGA, I didnt have to install a driver. I only had an issue when I plugged it into an AGA with the same GPU as the one in the laptop.

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад

      Thanks Dave. My next video will be a comparison of 4 video cards in the amplifier against my desktop. As a matter of course I update the driver and on my AW15 R2 I had no issues,even with the GTX 1080ti. I noticed that in device manager there was a question mark against the GTX 1080ti so I rebooted and that was it.. wouldn't boot. System restore didn't work, repair didn't work, I even tried to boot from another disk. Perhaps the 1080ti is too similar to the GTX 1080 ? Would be interested to hear if anyone else had the same issue for sure.

    Hi there, I am about to start study in Software Eng. in a month and I am a gamer. For my both purposes I really stuck between Alienware 17R4 1080 I7-7820HK, ASUS ROG G752VS-XS74K i7-7820HK 1070 and MSI GT73VR 7RE i7-7820HK 1070. I don't have that much money to change a desktop in a short time, I'll have to use it at least for 4 years. Which one do you suggest for me? I don't play really hard, only WoW, Overwatch, PUBG, GTAV, and Dota2 sometimes.
    Thanks for the reviews btw! They help a lot!

    Thank you for the nice video. I won the same model (I guess) and have the same impression, except, I think the touchpad is awful, compared to the one one Apple Macbook Pro. The main issue with me is that the multi-finger gestures don't work well, especially with the three/four-finger taps. I've contacted Tobii and guess they knew about the issue. (Interestingly they are also the people behind the touchpad.)
    Also, PCH Temp. can get rather high (up to 97C in some cases) since the recent two BIOS updates. So I'm going for a repaste.

    Another great review. Just to let people know I just repasted with Kryonaut and haven't seen a big drop in temps - maybe 2-3C. I have the same spec GPU and CPU as reviewed here. Considering my options now might try undervolting next.

      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад

    • @GrinderXJ220
      @GrinderXJ220 7 лет назад

      OWNorDISOWN If I had to guess, I'd say it's because Alienware improved their stock cooling solution (vs. earlier models) so its harder to get further improvement from repasting. Not sure how that will translate to other laptops. I can't seem to find the Asus model you mentioned on the sale in UK, do you know has it been released yet?

  • @eliterox
    @eliterox 7 лет назад

    Very nice video again my friend! . I've noticed that no matter what alienware claims, these laptops still ship with thermal issues. The only real way to enjoy these are by repasting the unit + a good undervolt (glad you took my UV advice and actually did so on video :D) . I've repasted several AW units , most of them being 15R3s and the difference is night and day. One last thing mate, your Temp chart when you list undervolted values is shifted on OC (you show lower as the higher bar). Keep it going :D

    THANK YOU!!! You're the only one with a full review of the new i7 7820HK Alienware 17R4. I am so confused as to which laptop I should buy, the Alienware 17 R4 or the new Razer Blade Pro with 7820HK.

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад +1

      atindra jha thanks for watching! I was tempted to buy an open box on the Razer. I read a review and he said it was hot, throttled (at stock clocks), fans were loud and the keyboard was poor as it didn't register all key strikes unless you hit them in the center or firmly. The screen was great as was the speakers. I think for $4000 it is a lot to ask for.. If you want a light weight i7 7820hk / gtx 1080 might be best to wait for the Aorus x7 v7 or DT, they are selling off the previous gen on sale now...

    • @14thegr8
      @14thegr8 7 лет назад

      Hey thanks a million for telling me about Aorus. I hadn't heard of it before. Just checked out the Aorus X7 DT v6 and I LOVE it. It's basically everything the Razer Blade Pro is, svelte, light, powerful and stunning for a thousand dollars less. I've heard about the thermal throttling issues in the Blade Pro and that's alarming considering it's outrageous price tag. I think I'm gonna wait for the x7 DT v7 which they'll hopefully launch soon equipped with the i7 kaby lake microarchitecture. Subscribing to your channel is the best thing I've done on YT in a long time.

  • @nasserjabi

    Hi again Steven. Do you still find msi's titan's screen bitter than this Alienware? I have noticed from your comparison before that msi Tn has a reddish/yallowish cast which is bad. At the same time I have personally tested Alienware's IPS screen ( 15 in model ) and the colors were washed out with a blue cast, l think TN will worst. So what do you think?
    Have you managed to managed to improve the colors in your MSI's laptop? I remember from your smacdown the brown word document that you have viewed in that test verses Alienware brighter screen. I think MSI's TN could cause depression over time !

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад +1

      Naser Jabi The Alienwares QHD panel is definitely colder and you are right the MSI TN is a more subdued, warmer look I guess, even after calibration. Which do I prefer? Perhaps the Alienwares as it is brighter but as you say both TN panels are not great for colour reproduction work but are ok for gaming. The 4k IPS panels are probably the best bet for this regard..

  • @LimitGTX
    @LimitGTX 7 лет назад +2

    Thanks for the update on the kaby lake R4 it certainly help me decide. Personally for me if a laptop exceeds 79 degree while under load gaming its unacceptable. I've had multiple gaming laptops with overheating issues so for me, i would rather get a less powerful configuration than deal with the damage caused from the heat. That CPU will be dead in under 2 years with typical gaming sessions or dead in a 1 year for a hardcore gamer. Pushing the CPU near its limit constantly (90+ degree) will seriously degrade its lifespan from my experience.

    This for this review. I'm not longer a gamer, but looking to replace my MBPr 2013 with a powerful upgradable laptop. What do you recommend?

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад

      Bernard Adjodha for true upgradability in a laptop you can't beat a Clevo model such as a Sager NP9876 or similar. Hidevolution do Evoc ones and can customize it great, including delidding and repaste with liquid metal. XOTICPC, gentech etc market Sager. Eurocom also makes their laptops like the Tornado F5. All use desktop cpu's.
      The MSI GT73VR is the best one I have used to date. Not in terms of looks or necessarily build quality (it has not scratched even with the dog walking all over it) but it has 3 full size m. 2 ssd slots, abikity to add an extra GPu. The GPUs are mxm so they can be upgraded too.

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад

      The i7 7820hk cpu runs hot in when overclocked in every system I have tried so far. I haven't tried the MSI GT73VR one and I suspect out of the box that one would run cooler. My main concern on the GTX 1080 one is I have had reports of people's games freezing or stuttering due to the 180W bios they adopted - which means more heat and the thermal pads were not making good contact. I'm sure it is the minority of units affected though. The unit I had ran hot but performed really well despite this. Dell have a great return policy and generally good tech support and they do have 12 months financing too. I say give it a go but make sure to stress it well - overclocked too and see if you are happy with it in your return window period..

Been putting off De-lidding for like 4 months my re paste was a lot better then stock but Im going with iUnlocks guide this next time. The Triangle shape of the heat-sink really kills it makes it alot less sexy in the inside.

    Blue lights on the lid of my AW 15 R4, are not glowing as bright as they used to, the Alienware logo at the front of the lid and the alien head on the back of the lid are unable to properly Illuminate blue color and it is affecting the colors which need blue too for example cyan looks green, purple looks red, blue color is fine everywhere except these two places. Also this is a common being faced by many users... I think buying an Alienware was a mistake.

      J. Siddiqi hi, thanks! You can try and push it further using either Throttlestop or Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. I think I got it to 4.5. Important thing is to make sure you get a good wattage to the cpu and Temps are ok. Download Hwinfo64 and check cpu package power, it should be in the mid to high 70s Watts underload. In Throttlestop there is an option for max power.

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  6 лет назад

      Hi Chris. I assume that temperature is the CPU because the GPU usually runs much cooler. Still, that is a high temperature for that CPU. I would expect something in the mid 80s max. Of course, Alienware had issues on the 6th gen with their paste etc so that could be the cause. So without taking it apart I would recommend trying to undervolt the CPU. I have a tutorial here: ruclips.net/video/XC74mW9R5gw/видео.html
      Good luck and let us know how you make out !

Temps via prime95 blend after 15 minutes maxed at 72c. Definitely better than what I was expecting after the initial reviews. The highest GPU temp I've seen is around 66c. Wow, can’t believe this review is only about 2 years ago, yet manufacturers are only just now figuring out how to properly cool current components.
    On a side note, repasting the R4 and R5 models with Kryonaut is the safest bet, and it’s easier than the previous revisions where you have to take out the motherboard. In the i9 8950HK/GTX 1070 model I have, without the repaste, I had a hard time even getting to 4.1 GHz comfortably on the CPU, but after the repaste I was able to hit 4.5 GHz, albeit with a somewhat hefty undervolt of .167 mV, but it works really well now. Conductonaut I would be REALLY careful with due to the nature of liquid metal, and that should really be done by someone who knows how to properly disassemble the laptop and apply the compound.

      Ruben Juarbe if it was a 1080p display I would say the 1070 can get very close to the 1080. But those extra pixels in the QHD screen would make the 1080 more future proof. That being said, the 1070 is a very capable card and if you can save a couple hundred dollars allowing you to buy another ssd then it does make sense.

    What are the differences in the panels, IPS it's more colorfull than the TN?

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад +1

      Alison SM IPS panels do tend to have better colours, but in my tests I wouldn't say it was huge. I think the issue is more colour degradation as you view off center. They tend to have better contrast too, but usually slower response times than TN panels. If your main focus is graphic work IPS is probably best and probably also casual gaming. But for those wanting high refresh rates and lower response times for competitive gaming TN is probably best.
      In my next video on my gigabyte P57xv7 (120hz TN 5ms) I do a vsync test at 120hz and 60hz and the 120hz is definitely smoother.

    Is it possible to repaste the AW with liquid metal? (More than 85°C is a no go for me)
    I have to decide between the AW 17.3 R4 i7 7820hk, GTX 1080 and the MSI GT75VR 7RF, i7 7820hk, GTX 1080 .
    I think I like the AW more, but the Temperatue is an important thing for me and I've read very often that the MSI is much better in temperature than the AW. (sorry for bad english)

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  6 лет назад

      Tom E. Hi Tom, yes you can repaste the Alienware with liquid metal. Iunlock has a guide on Notebookreview on how to do it. It takes a bit of disassembling though. The MSI is much easier to work on. If you live in the USA Hidevolution repastes them. Good luck!

    • @tom.2794
      @tom.2794 6 лет назад

      Thanks for that extremly fast answer. I live in Germany, so I have to do I by my own.
      The most important point for the AW against the MSI is for me, that the AW offers a QHD Pannel, wich is similar to my Dell QHD G-Sync 144hz monitor I'm using for gaming when I'm at home.
      Do you know if it's possible to use an external g-sync monitor, connected with the mini-dp at the AW?

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  6 лет назад

      Tom E. You are welcome Tom. I don't see why that wouldn't work.
      Have you considered the Clevo p870km or the upcoming P870TM? I have the former, have delidded the i7 7700k and repasted it and have it running at 4.7ghz no problem - with an undervolt it is very cool. I have the i7 8700k six core version coming in soon too. Very easy to work on. Cpu and GPu are replaceable too.

    • @tom.2794
      @tom.2794 6 лет назад

      I already own one, lol :D. I7 7700k, GTX 1080.
      The problem is, the temperatures are around 99°C CPU and 92°C GPU. The next problem is, its not working with my g-sync monitor. When I use g-sync, I got extrem laggs, especially when im opening overlay menues in games. I've already sent it to the manufacturer to reprair it. 2 times... Also the CPU is already beheaded. No change... So I'm done with that. I'm sending that one back. I just want a working system and i hope I can find that with AW or MSI.

      Tom E. That is a shame. I saw a huge improvement with my repaste, will upload results soon. Sometimes the heat sink is not perfectly flat. If you watch Mrfoxrox channel he shows how to solder some shims to it. Lot of work though

    Hey, great vids! I'm really curious about that performance when you hook up that laptop to an AGA with a 1080 in it. Theoretically it should be the same. But if there are differences it could possibly expose a weakness/strength in the AGA. Bandwidth, CPU Temps (Because the on-board 1080 is diabled etc), I'd love to see a video about that.

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад

      Thanks! I did try with this laptop but It wiped my boot manager so I had to reset the system twice. Don't know what was going on there. I did do an analysis using my AW15 R2 though: ruclips.net/video/ogINXIegqc8/видео.html

    • @WatchNerd21600
      @WatchNerd21600 7 лет назад

      Oh man, that must've been time consuming. Yup I also saw that one too! Once I can conclude that the only possible bottleneck of the AGA is the CPU and not the bandwitdh/design of the AGA I'd probably grab me one

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад

      Yeh, it took me about a month to do, lol. According to Alienware they confirm that there is some CPU overhead running the amp and I am sure there is a bit of a bandwidth hit. People have reported that they get better performance with the hk cpu's - i believe they are in the comments. It seems to me that the power of graphic cards is growing faster than the power of the CPU's to feed them..

    Hi :)!, I have some questions, ok I bought an alienware 17 r4 with processor 7820hk, nvidia gtx1080, 32gb RAM, 1 tb ssd and 1 tb hdd, resolution 3840 x 2160. Well the battery is goes very fast, is because the resolution of the screen? And my second question is, when the alienware get very hot, is bad for internal system? Need to buy a cooler? And third question is, why in the desktop, when I open windows home is a little slow, but when I open what ever program, this issue got away. Hope you can help me. Thank you for your video!

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад +1

      If you press F7 and Fn can you switch to integrated graphics? That might help..of course, you are pushing 4x the pixels of 1080p so that doestake up more battery power. Reducing brightness may help of course - have you tried undervolting ? In my experiernce that can add 20 mins or so.
      Undervolting can also help reduce temperatures a bit as can a cooling pad.. Most of us agree that having you computer run in the 90s for long periods can't be any good. There are some good tutorials (eg by iunlock on Notebook review) showing how to repaste if you feel adventuorus. I would try the undervolting and notebook cooler first and if they work OK then that would save you some hassle.. Good luck!
      Not sure about your 3rd question - you have plenty of RAM and it will be reading from your ssd so should be pretty speedy. Does it happen when you are plugged in too? When on battery your cpu will downclock a bit..

      I generally like to try and keep the CPU and GPU below 90. Generally the GPU runs cooler, certainly on your Alienware and if you have the i7 7820hk CPU I found that it started to throttle probably around 93 Deg C or so.

However frustrating they got it back to me within 10 days and dell tech support imo was very professional and helpful. They also gave me $100 dell credit. I also had issues with the killer 1535 when it was under heavy load dropping connection but seemed to have solved the issue by uninstalling and reinstalling drivers. I have overclocked the 7820hk to 4.1ghz and am curious what programs you would recommend for monitoring cpu and gpu temps.

      Brett Bremer use hwinfo64. It does one thing most other programs don't and thats tell you when throttling happens.
      it doesn't have pretty graphs, so the other options are better for that.
      it can log everything and gives you a max temp hit and average as well as letting you know when some limit is reached

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад

      Brett Bremer yes, I always use Hwinfo64, you can readily reset the temps shown to zero after any changes you make and shows you the power being used as well as min and average cpu clock speeds.

    I will just say this. Anything dealing with OC'ing in a small form factor like laptops usually are, should not be done unless you can be certain that it will hold for any extended length of time. Good to know that the thermal paste issue still hasn't been fixed yet (and they meaning Alienware, have had months to fix this). Almost makes me wonder if even the 15 R2 that I'm currently using may have thermal issues with the CPU. Sometimes when I go from a cold boot or from sleep mode to the desktop screen, I notice that the 6700HQ goes into the 60s at idle before dropping back down to the 20s and 30s a few minutes later. Good thing is the laptop is paid off so I may try to open it up and maybe do a repaste, but we'll see.
    I notice a lot of stuttering issues when playing Mass Effect Andromeda and the CPU usage goes up pretty high even with max settings at 1080p (using a GTX 1070 with the Alienware Graphics Amplifier). OC'ing the GPU seems to help somewhat, but the dips still happen, mainly with heavy effects and different lighting setups, also with too much going on at once. I could try playing with VSync off to allow the GPU to be utilized more but then I get nasty screen tearing and that's not fun on my eyes. There's a lot of different things I need to try to be honest, lol.

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад

      Zachary Goterch my next video will be a complete analysis of the AW amplifier with 4 different video cards and at 1080p I'm afraid your 1070 is being bottlenecked by the cpu ( I imagine your cpu is the i7 4710hq) same as my R2...

    • @zacharygoterch168
      @zacharygoterch168 7 лет назад

      OWNorDISOWN Actually it's the 6700HQ, mine's the revised R2 with the Skylake processor (I think that revision released in mid to late 2015). Still, you could be right about the bottlenecks. I'm able to operate at 3.1 GHz with the multithreaded turbo boost, 3.3 with two cores being utilized, and then obviously the max turbo it can hit which is 3.5 GHz on one core.

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад

      Zachary Goterch I remember in an interview with Alienware they did say that it does take cpu cycles to run the Amplifier so that may be the issue. If you look back at say my GT62VR video or the one I have it battle my desktop and see how your system compares to that? My GT62VR has the i7 6700hq and gtx 1070 so it should be close..

    • @zacharygoterch168

      OWNorDISOWN Good point. Luckily I have my Heaven and Firestrike benchmarks saved on my computer so I will compare those results with your GT62VR and see where I might be able to make some adjustments. Thanks for taking the time to reply by the way, and good to hear the basement's dried up. I had that happen to me in the duplex I lived in about 13 years ago (I was only 11 then). Basement flooded after a nasty thunderstorm and my oldest brother had to find another room to sleep in (I'm the youngest of three) and most of his stuff was unsalvageable (had a nice drum set and some other fairly expensive stuff), so I can relate somewhat. It's the cleanup afterwards that's the not-so-fun part.

      Great! Thank you! I have had quite an adventure of purchases. I first got the Surface Book 2, which was an impeccable machine, just not great for a primary gaming rig. Then I got the Razer Blade, which was nice but frankly felt overpriced and a bit outdated. I then purchased the MSI GT75, which arrived with a horribly corrupt boot SSD/HDD with more bad sectors than my ex girlfriend's neighborhood, and a power adapter for the power plug in the back of the PC that was so flimsy the power plug simply fell out multiple times the port/adapter/whatever you call it for the plug itself felt as though it was about to fall off. Finally, I just purchased an Alienware 17 r4 that is set to arrive in the next two weeks. I am praying this is the machine for me! Thanks for all your help along the way from across the pond

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  6 лет назад

      The fans on the Predator don't go that fast, its fairly quiet. I tested the i7700hq models and it was fine but an overclocked i7 7820hk? I think that might get hot too.
      I have had countless people complain that the AW17 T4 i7 7820hk gets hot and mine did. Do you know how to repaste it ? Performance remained good though. The HP Omen X is a nice option but I had to keep that at 4.1 Ghz and undervolt to keep it cool because of the shared heat pipes.
      Aorus tells me that a new CPU will be launched on their X7 DT in April - rumour is that it will be a six core so you might want to sit tight and see what comes up - I expect these quad cores to get reduced in price.

    I repasted my 17 R4 with liquid metal (gpu and cpu), it fixed my thermal throttling issue.
    Temps for GPU went from having a max of 92 to a max of 75.
    The cpu saw around the same. Around 69C for the cpu (before it was around 89).
    I was hoping I could get my gpu to stay under 70 C, maybe I can find a way to do that. Anyone have any suggestions?

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  6 лет назад

      You can use the voltage editor curve in MSI afterburner to either reduce the voltage for a particular frequency or reduce the max clock speed by bringing the voltage down. I did a video on that.

    • @gomezalejandrog
      @gomezalejandrog 6 лет назад

      Is there a way without the cost of performance?
      Would you think I just need to add more liquid metal?

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  6 лет назад

      I would be careful about using too much liquid metal. Last thing you want is to have go on the motherboard. Reducing the voltage on the GPU but maintaining a higher boost is tricky. I manged to get 5 degrees cooler on my GTX 1080 laptop but did try on the MSI GT63 and got no reduction. It's worth a try though, no reduction in performance unless you lower that boost clock. Max 75 is good though...

    • @gomezalejandrog
      @gomezalejandrog 6 лет назад +1

      I took your advice and decided to undervolt the gpu.
      The results under load are phenomenal. I dropped another 15 C with a max GPU temp of 60 C under load (30 minutes of running Heaven benchmanrk).
      Curious to see if I had performance drop, it's hitting close to 2000 MHz at ~0.927 V so I'm assuming I did not.

      The first thing I would do would be to run DDU (display driver uninstaller) and remove the video driver and re-install from Nvidia's website. I would install HWinfo64 and see what the frequency the GPU is running at and its temperature is, just to make sure it is running within spec. If all is well then I would ask if you have the rear of the laptop raised? That causes issues. I recommend watching my video on stuttering, this may be the cause. ruclips.net/video/JnRtBFc9axY/видео.html

You can also configure this Alienware 17 with an i7 7700hq for $2300 if you call them and one viewer picked up my model from the outlet and it was really cool and was only $1700... Below those you are in gtx 1070 territory, you know me. I like my GT73VR so that would be a good one. If you want to go smaller the Aero 15 looks good with a big battery as does its smaller brother Aero 14. The Aorus X3 v7 I have you can get for $2000 and after a repaste runs cool.. But these latter 3 are all gtx 1060 and you are paying for thinness and light weight.

    Steve, I must have been a bit balmy to have bought a Alienware 17 R4 with a 7820HK and GTX 1070 and of course, the 1435 wireless card. You'd have thought I would have learned after buying an R3, but nay, I'm still a daft bugger

      Thiek Niarb hi Keith, on no the 1435 card.. Hope it's better than the one I had. Good luck mate!

    Man, I wish I had seen this video sooner. I just purchased a 17 R4 with the i7 7820hk and 1080p screen. Should I be concerned about the heating issues?

      Today I received a comment saying his was running cool so hopefully they have fixed it....I have had a number of previous comments reflecting my findings though so I would be interested to hear how you make out. Undervolting the cpu will help too. Good luck!

      Grant Hutson and hows the temps going?

    • @granthutson2224
      @granthutson2224 7 лет назад

      Haven't overclocked yet but my average temps playing arma 3 for a couple of hours on max settings sits right around 78 degrees c. However, it did get as hot as 90 on one of the cores during that test though. I'm no expert but I imagine that means that mine does need re-pasted unfortunately. I love the computer but I would stay away unless you're comfortable re-pasting it.

    The nice screen doesn't negate the limited ports & inability to switch to integrated graphics for extended battery life. Plus you have to deal with Dell, which constitutes a bridge too far.... MSI remains on top.

  • @MentalD-Fox

    Allienware all nice and shiny but not so good under the hood and the same problems with killer card that i saw ppl complain on the MSI side, that is why i got the intel card when i was customizing my Sager/Clevo :D. Also i can do pretty much any repair on it and it dose not void my warranty, as long as i don't brake something :)), and you can get any parts you want of ebay, you could build your own laptop if you wanted pice by pice :D. I think i will run time spy see what my temps are just for giggles :D, i did run it some time ago but forgot the temps.

    • @MentalD-Fox
      @MentalD-Fox 7 лет назад +2

      kerodfresenbet gebremedhin sure but temps will depend in the model you buy :). In my case (P650 I7 6700 HQ / GTX 1060) on a artificial 100% System load (gpu, cpu, fpu, memory, cache) that i did with aida 64 , my preferred way of testing stability and temps, I get on GPU - 68 Celsius with a stable 1835 Mhz / CPU - 81 Celsius with a stable 3.29 frequency. No throttling detected of course, no cooling pad just on a flat table, and no special tuning, undervolting or different thermal paste, just the standard one they put (some IC diamond ). Also check out my channel if you wanna see some in game FPS, i posted on a fee games :D

      DWolf Review i had opposite situation. My intel card was causing ping . So high that i couldnt play. I changed to new router, same problem .. suddenly from 60 to 800 ping. Nothing was helping , drivers updates and so on.. since i have killer 1435 all my problems dissapeared.

    I paid £3,100 for this laptop to add 32gb ram & 1tb SSD i'll be buying the paste and making sure alienware fixes my issue if when i get it & the temps are to hot i don't want a cpu that will last only 2 years.

      Sent the laptop back and after 1 week have the money back & bought another one. Now the laptop is on it's way! according to dell they didn't repaste the 7820hk until 2 and a half weeks ago i was three days out of new stock! So hopefully now i'll see a huge improvement fingers crossed.

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад

      They only repasted them 3 weeks ago ! That is crazy, that just doesn't make sense to me. It is not as if it has just been a big secret. Good luck, keep us posted :)

    • @Near2Future
      @Near2Future 7 лет назад

      Yes i'm very suspicious i think they wanted to get rid of old stock before giving people the new stock. Anyways they updated stock & i'll be making sure that the temps did change if they didn't and they just wanted to make a sale i won't be very happy.

    I'm not the conspiracy guy, but I bet they paste it bad on purpose. I repasted my Acer, before I had thermal throtling at 99°cpu constant playing Overwatch, lol. After repaste, with stress test cpu and gpu at the same time, my cpu won't get past 80°...yes, I had to pay shitloads of money and on top of that to play engineer stuff, oh boy.

    • @serban2139
      @serban2139 7 лет назад

      undervolting also works if you don't want to overclock. I'd rather have -15° than extra 15fps..but yea :D

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад +1

      Șerban yes, I don't know why these companies just don't spend the extra time to do the best paste they can. Think it's because they are so big and it is all on a big production line. That being said, so are cars and you don't see repeated issues with cars overheating.. Perhaps there needs to be some quality standard like the automotive TS16949..

    • @MogRules99
      @MogRules99 7 лет назад

      A lot of it seems to have to do with manufacturing process's. If process's laid out by the company are followed perfectly then in most cases the problems don't exist, but toss a bunch of people in a factory owned by the lowest bidder and you see stuff like this happen. Some of the stuff that comes in some people's laptops nowadays, like plastic being left on thermal pads, warped heatsinks etc....

    • @serban2139
      @serban2139 7 лет назад +2

      imgur.com/a/JFzhQ clearly done by a "engineer"

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад +1

      MogRules99 it all comes down to a lack of quality control. In automotive, like I said, aircraft too you have to have zero defects otherwise it's a corrective action job. I'm not privy to what qc standards Pc manufacturing is governed by but it needs to be tightened up.

    I had this same model for 3 weeks and I returned it. the thermal throttling was terrible. It would cause the most basic functions to freeze up like searching the Web because the fans wouldnt be spinning fast enough. Gaming was ok because the fans would be going full speed while gaming but the temps were unacceptable.

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад

      Sorry to hear that. yes, I was disappointed after all the discussions iunlock and his team had with Dell. I was hoping that the right vent would actually be a vent this time. I was hoping they had larger feet to allow more air underneath. These are just basic things and alone wouldn't have fixed it but would have helped. I think the cpu should have been undervolted at bios level. Oh well. Thanks for watching and confirming your findings Jake.
