Damouchari is the only natural cove on the East Coast of Pelion.
That is why Damouchari has always played an important role in the wider region, serving as a port.
It was created by the Venetians during the Middle Ages, when Venice dominated the entire Mediterranean Sea and coast. There they built a castle (the ruins of which still exist), as a refueling station and a stronghold that protected them from the frequent raids of pirates at that time.
Over the years, two stories that have tried to explain the origin of the name "Damouchahari" have withstood and prevailed. One version is more historical and comes from the Venetian period, while the second is more romantic and comes from the period of the 20th century, when trade flourished.
It is said that the Venetian sailors and inhabitants headed to the safe castle of Damouchari, every time the pirates tried to attack them. Closed inside the castle, they called on the Virgin Mary to protect them from danger and give them strength for battle. They prayed to her, chanting: "Dami (Latin) Grace (Greek)", which means "Give me Grace". Over time, the phrase "Dami Harris" became known as "Damouchari".
Captain Apostolos Vainopoulos (grandfather of our family) on one of his trips to Europe and specifically to Romania, met and fell in love with Cleopatra. From the aristocracy of Bucharest he brought her to the beautiful Damouchari, dedicating the whole village to her. Cleopatra's sacrifice for her love was great. The loneliness she felt due to the long distance from her family and the frequent trips of her lover in combination with complications during childbirth, led to her death and the glorious end of an intense relationship (read History of Damouchahari). Since then, the locals have named the village "Damouchari" from the phrase "D'amur (French) Haris (Greek)" which means "For the sake of Love".
