I used donkey guard against 5 former NFL linemen in a bar fight outside of Tucson. It worked so well and struck such fear in them that the 5th one that came at me tried to donkey guard my donkey guard, but I donkey guarded it back which trumped his counter-donkey and created a donkey singularity thus creating the universe we now inhabit. You're welcome.

    • @thomasarmstrong3917

I think knee shield half is the best home base guard. Being a one in one out guard you can transition to inside position (butterfly, half butterfly, x guard) and outside position (closed, k, dlr) guards whilst also controlling distance to protect vs strikes, whilst threatening either stand ups/underhook half guard dog fight attacks if top player is passive, or sweep or sub attacks if they pressure in.
Obviously being in a fully established shoulder crunch butterfly guard, ashi/50-50/saddle positions, or a fully established deep k guard or even a high closed guard is better, but harder to get to initially.
Plus a lot of guard recovery from various positions go straight into halfguard, and its easy to pull from a failed single leg.

I switch to k guard from rubber guard a bit if I’m getting stacked, but mostly if they are posturing out of closed guard earlier. Play more of Lockys style of K guard to backside 50 unless there’s an easy pendulum or dump to arm bar. Pretty much agree with all your points, excellent video!

Would have love to see you breakdown Mike Mallot’s loss to Neil Magny because a K-guard entry spelled the beginning of that ending sequence. Not sure if it was a gas tank thing (he was definitely tired at the end there) or the fact that he went a more traditional jiu jitsu route seemingly looking for a heel hook which allowed Magny to get some shots in from standing.

It's not about 1 guard, it's about blending the guards. Even full guard can have a place when mixed with other guards.
K guard, Turtle, Half guard (with dog fight intention), Butterfly guard, and all of the other alphabet guards
Underrated are some of the other auxiliary controls for finishing the RNC. For example, the omaplata and reverse calf slicer, as shown in the video, can help control for a RNC finish

    • @McClain3000
      @McClain3000 10 месяцев назад

It is body dependent imo. I think with a specific physical advantages full guard can be good against an opponent but, If you don't have long legs, It is difficult to control your opponents posture and defend yourself against strikes. Also it kills fighters ability to wall walk or give their back and tripod which are some of the most effective techniques in mma.

Its a great offensive uphrade over closed guard for sure, and a natural transition when they posture/stand up.
I think without clothing for lapel grips and friction closed guard isnt great when strikes are involved. Good intermittent way to stop a pass and break posture, but i reckon its better to use that brief window of broken posture to get your grips and switch to something else.
I also think knee shield half guard is great for stopping strikes and getting up/getting the underhook for dogfight. Plus it transitions into half butterfly easily and from there youve got your x guards, ashis, saddle entries, or the clamp.

I have actually researched this quite alot. Theres quite decent guards that are used in mma that people are turning a blind eye.
First guard is underhook half guard by demian maia to dogfight or just standing up.
Butterfly guard, half butterfly is used a lot too for standing up.
Turtle if you count that as a guard.
Theres one that is underused but used if someone knows. I have seen it used by khabib, and by other prominent mma.
It is also the guard recommended by firas zahabi and john danaher
Its called vale tudo guard, which is basically the williams guard, clamp guard and the pin shoulder guard by neil melanson. Its all modified clamp guard basically. Its interesting guard even though people dont really see it, you can see how people try to transition from closed guard.
The Z guard or knee shield is also interesting a leon edwards, uses this alot to shrimp away and create space to stand up.
K guard and the funk roll actually looks very similar. Maybe theres a connection there.
Best guard to use in what i have seen to scramble up is the octopus half guard or side octopus. Best guard to just stand up. Used by gsp, khabib, thiago alves, bisping and many more. Very overlooked

I don't know a lot about k-guard, but from one watch of the video it definetly seems like in mma it's complimentary to more traditional guard types a lot of the time. I think the important thing is to be adaptable with how you mix attacks and sweeps. I don't think k is objectively superior, rather the skill to transition to it in order to work out of the bottom position is a strong skillset to have.

Good video but i feel the closed guard is really poorly represented in this. Ground and pound opportunities exist against K guard users as well. Especially since its a leg lock entry mostly. How many times have we seen fighters get beat up or lose position when going for the legs? How many times have we seen fighters using a simple closed guard shut down G&P and then attacking with the various forms of closed guard submissions? I agree that k guard is a viable option for MMA but i hardly think its any better than many similar positions that we have been seeing for years

Ive used choi bar position in Mma sparring. Your head is off center and at a difficult angle to get punched from the far arm. The near arm you are controlling. Ground knees could be dangerous but you could frame the opponent near leg with your bottom leg if ground knees are allowed.

Choi bar is an excellent position. Grounded knees would change k guard too, tbf

'shallow' K works best in MMA when you have an active overleg and you're constantly looking to off balance. If you're passive and allow collapse you'll get squashed.

Just curious. How did you find all those kguard applications in all those matches? Jusr from memory or did you have a list ready or is there a database that tracks this?

Most of them I've already studied on the channel, or they're from a fighter whom I've seen use K-guard before (Dolidze)!
The Yahya one I remember seeing posted on reddit a few years ago. Mostly it's all in my brain hole. haha

What are your thoughts on the K guard for street fights? It looks like you will be exposed for the opponent to grab or punch the groin

I think deep k or even a deep k on someone who is standing square is better than that shallow k. I as the attacker in guard jus have to cross my ankles and sit heavy and that arm is useless. You just have to be away of limiting them getting a deeper angle because then there's and armbar or triangle but realistically adjusting /finishing either is incredibly hard with one arm trapped. You've lost an anchor to control posture as you adjust the triangle and you can't extend them well with the armbar (although if they don't have the best bas or if that under hook side leg is strong you can hamstring bump their shoulder for a roll in your example. It's one of those things where when you do things right it's great but you got to be clean asf with it or you're getting hammer fisted to the er

I have to admit - as someone who primarily trains CJJ/MMA ruleset, I came into this video *extremely* skeptical (if you can't be on top, the priority is standing up....and intentionally putting your legs over your hips to this extent isn't ideal)....
....and in the first part of the video, I found myself confirming the skepticism....just seemed like an inefficient way to get the stand up and that it'd be more worth it to just get better wrestling.....
....but by the end of the video, I was a lot more convinced.
Yes, you must focus more on wrestling in this ruleset, but - if you *must* be on bottom and it *must* be full guard - this is a surprisingly solid option.
So while extremely contextual (I'll still be relying on my "Demian Maia"-esque bottom half as my primary bottom game, I will be exploring this option in future training sessions when in bottom full guard (and because of this video).

I appreciate this detailed comment! I definitely agree that obviously top position has giant advantages in MMA. I meant that K-Guard seems to be a good update to the traditional MMA closed guard for its GNP halting properties and attacking options. Thanks again!
