    I have spent nights like that on the Amazon Jungle (yeah, It gets cold there too at night!). I hate that feeling of waking up cold and dump. One has to admire those trappers and mountain men from the 1700 and early 1800 that slept outside in inclement weather, often malnourished and in fear of being attacked by grizzlies, mountain lions and hostile natives. I found that compounded sleep deprivation often affects my judgement.
    Great Video Suzanne and Sepp. I like that you are willing to experiment and always learn something new on your videos. Keep on the good work.

      The combination of your comment and the video reminded me of the solution that I learnt from my girlfriend when we were hiking in her remote part of Ireland.
      It rains 364 days of the year, but most of the rain coming off the north Atlantic is a fine drizzle that jut makes everything that you are wearing sodden. It is very uncomfortable and can be very dangerous if you are out overnight.
      Her solution was layers of wool and jersey woven cotton, covered by a cowhide leather biker style jacket and the unpadded cowhide jeans that people wear riding around town.
      It works perfectly and also solves the problem of breathable hiking clothing containing manmade fibres that can be very flammable. Both embers can damage them and their have been several cases of the sleeve catching alight while tending and cooking on a wood fire.
      Regarding the fire bed, covering the fire with soil made it pointless, since the soil was saturated with water. After cooking on the open fire, we spread it out over a bed sized area and left it until all the embers on top were coated with a white ash before sleeping on them, covering ourselves with an old natural fibre tarp. It is important to resist the temptation to pull the tarp over your head or face, since smouldering wood embers produce carbon monoxide.
      Fortunately, their is no danger from wild animals in Ireland, only the odd donkey coming to investigate what the stupid human visitors are doing. Sometimes when we moved on in the morning they would follow us for a few miles and we got the odd ride.
      PS. Those literally hot nights on the west coast of Ireland all in leather resulted in us getting married when we returned to London and we have now been together for more than 25 years. 😊

    Thats an awesome idea for a heated bed. It think the heat would last quite a bit longer if you put some large rocks inside the fire. You could also put a dead animal in there before you covered up the fire. That would make for an awesome breakfast in the morning. The whole setup looks a lot like an traditional cooking pit. Thanks a lot for sharing and keep the videos coming :)

    • @susannewilliams
      @susannewilliams 7 лет назад +4

      We had hot rocks in strategic places. It's a matter of balancing effort, speed of heating, maximum heat, and how long the heat lasts. It's a multiple factor optimization.

    • @trabiccolo879

      The idea of putting something in the coals, in order to find breakfast ready the next morning, sounds nice. As a first try, and not to sleep above a dead animal for wish of good luck the first time, I would go for potatoes and onions...

    Great vid and practice, ive done something like that except i didnt bury the embers, i removed all the embers and waited until i could put my wool blanket in the pit with my goretex bivy inside it and slept well but was sweaty and a bit too hot for half the night until the ground cooled down, but it was done unplanned in a pinch when i needed it lol.

      You just made me laugh, remembering the night that we unexpectedly stayed out overnight, My girlfriend had the bright idea of stomping and spreading the fire until most of the glowing embers were out so that we could sleep on them and let our biker leathers finish the embers off.
      We certainly got very sweaty, but it was not entirely to do with the fire. Our literally hot leather knee pads found a whole new use. 😊😊😊

      ist jetzt aber kein Jux: Hunde haben ja eine leicht höhere Körpertemperatur als wir, was es durchaus angenehm machen kann, sich von der Töle die Matratze vorwärmen zu lassen. Wenn es hier allerdings so richtig heiß wird, also knapp 40° Tagestemperaturen, würde ich es meistens vorziehen, wenn das Vieh woanders pennt, bevor ich ins Bett steig ;-)))

    Does it have to be sand, or will dirt work just as well? Where I live there is an abundance of "clay" dirt. There is sand by the river. Do not recall ever seeing "sandy dirt" though. So can you do this with clay dirt or is it too dense or whatever it is.

      Hi, each surface should work with it. Just not dry roots because of the fire. ATB

    The only thing with this is that you need the sand. Not everywhere has sand. Also in heavy snow areas you would need prior knowledge as to where the sand is to know where to dig. Other then that great idea if you know the area and are prepared for it.

    what about using river rocks heated in the fire, seems they would retain heat longer once covered? loved the vid, you guys got me hooked :)
    edit: sorry i just saw someone below already broached the subject of rocks :)

      Many thanks Richard. A few ppl. did, yes maybe. A firebed should be useful in nearly each envirement, so with or without rocks. If we had choosen river rocks ppl. would have talked about they explow and so on... It was like it was and it was ok. Somthing against the wet and for a softer sleep next time ;) ATB Sepp

    Hi Wald & Susan
    Nice tricks. Yes, I would add some hot rocks, specially at the feet.
    To "cheat" the hard sand I would make a depression for the hips, that would also allow a bit more body surface in contact with the warm sand...
    Be well

    Wonder if you build a bonfire against that rock if it'd store the heat generated and not only reflect it, but retain it throughout the night with a small fire going at the base overnight and a long bed of coals along the base like a Hunter's Fire?

    • @Waldhandwerk
      @Waldhandwerk  7 лет назад +1

      Hi, for sure possible. Maybe more wood and effort needed, ...on this place there was a "Wasserline wie von einer Traufe unter dem Felsen". eaves? from the Rock, so maybe wet in front of it. ATB Sepp

    I would have made the sand like a wall around the fire as the fire was burning to dry it out better instead of drying it near the end.
    good video.

    Great experiment! Did Susanne's clothing and gore-tex perform better than your clothing system?

    • @susannewilliams
      @susannewilliams 7 лет назад +1

      I had all loden and wool underneath as well but just thinner. Goretex was just against the damp. Better is just to put a waterproof barrier (even just a space blanket) between you and the ground. I generally only wear goretex in the autumn when I am expecting heavy rain and wind. I learned mountaineering in the UK. They know all about wet and windy.

    • @wildbrigante9596
      @wildbrigante9596 7 лет назад

      Hi Susanne, many thanks for your reply. So why would you use a barrier if you are sleeping on the ground where the firebed is? I am not familiar with this firebed at all, so I am curious and the video was really interesting. Do you use Gore-tex in Winter as well? I live in UK and yes I am getting used to wind and rain :-) but recently there has been some contrasting talk about the use of Gore-tex from Andrew Skurka in regards to clothing and Paul Kirtley in regards to boots. So I was wondering how your clothing performed in those conditions. Thanks again.

    • @susannewilliams
      @susannewilliams 7 лет назад +1

      I actually only use Gore-tex under certain circumstances. In this case, the heat from the buried fire starts to rise to the surface. It brings all the dampness of the ground with it. It rises as steam in fact. This is why you need a waterproof barrier over the firebed area. But this time we were wanting to try it totally pure. In general I use goretex only as an outer hard shell for hard rain and wind. I don't use it in the winter. I don't use it in boots. It is good stuff but you have to understand the function and limitations. Much prefer wool.

    • @Waldhandwerk
      @Waldhandwerk  7 лет назад

      Yes ;) My clothings here are my Fall and Winter standard and i wanted to know it i can stand overnight with them. Result yes, but better with a small downmat and a small tarp (for one person) ATB Sepp

    • @wildbrigante9596
      @wildbrigante9596 7 лет назад

      Thanks for the explanation, I see now why there is a need for a barrier. Maybe you should make a video on your winter clothing. Winter in your part of the globe is harsher than in England, in Scotland the situation might be different.

    If there are rocks about it would improve things by putting them on the fire because the rocks would retain the heat much more.
