In this video I give an update on the camper shell and how the first 10 nights went for me. There was some good and some bad. This is the review after my first hunting trip sleeping in my camper. I slept 10 nights in a campground.
I have a LEER 180 camper top on my Ram 1500 (5'7" bed).
AND FINALLY!!!!
You can find the exact products I use in my videos here:
www.amazon.com/... - Спорт
Quit lying, you're no where close to 5' 7"
OMG I hate your face.
@@G2Outdoors haha
😂😂😂😂 that's mint👌
Can't we all just get a bong?
Tip: You installed your marine plug upside down. Cover flap should point downward, not upward.
Thx. I'm an idiot...but it works.
100% best truck camping videos I’ve ever seen. This is exactly what I was looking for. Marine plug idea is amazing. Keep up the good work and good luck in the woods!
Yeah, 5’7” just isn’t going to cut it for me. I’ll remember that when I’m ready to buy a new truck 😂
Cant get no short bed 😂
I have a short bed and I’m 6’1”. Made my bed platform the size of my truck bed and I can sleep diagonally with room to spare
would not waste my time with a bed less that the standard 6 1/2' length
Hey brother, I’m a little late to this video so maybe you have fixed your mattress issues already. But if not, check out buying some upholstery foam off Amazon. Comes in many different sizes. All the guys in my family are BIG dudes and we all sleep on it in deer camp and it’s just like having a mattress, don’t feel the frame under you at all. I would suggest 5 inch thick minimum. Just an idea. Keep the great products coming man!
You have a great truck, Matt Damon
I'm buying a zoo.
Make your bed wider and sleep on an angle. Pythagorean Theorem. Get a Milliard 4.5” trifold mattress. $150. Bed rugs makes it cozy for real.
I initially used a Colman folding cot that I bought at Walmart. I took the legs off and bolted the metal frame to a wooden frame to allow for more under bed storage space. The trampoline like suspension design eliminates the discomfort of a flat solid surface.
Good idea. I need to maybe do that.
Love the marine port idea! As someone who doesn't wanna wire in a bunch of expensive isolation/battery/inverter stuff into the back of a truck, definitely gonna be considering that if I ever want to put in power!
I am considering a LEER and an A.R.E. topper. The LEER has double latches on the door..the A.R.E. has one one. Which do you prefer? Thanks. And how do you secure the door from the inside at night?
I like the slide out tray/table under the bed. I thought about doing the same thing but with one of those plastic rubbermaid tables where the legs fold out instead. I think you would get more uses out of it as long as the containers would still fit under the bed. Nice update vid.
That plug is a absolute must , why don’t you put your gear in the back seat when sleeping it’s safe and dry then if you need anything you can track through the back window
Great idea with the marine plug. Definitely going to do that. That’s the first time I’ve seen that idea and I’m stealing it. Lol
Why not just run the wire through a cracked window to a power strip?
@@dougkraemer8327 I see the IAFF symbol your using. Just curious where you’re working? I just retired from Mokena FPD, a south suburb of Chicago. Local 4270.
South of you Local 53
@@dougkraemer8327 right there are air gaps in the tailgate that an extention coard will fit through without pinching.......not only did he void the warranty of the camper but he also created a path for water to get in once the silicone dry rots I would never do that
Love the marine plug!
10 days ??? Did your mommy kick you out ???
Thanks for the video, it makes me a bit curious why you don't sell that truck and get a long bed? Also seems a quad cab would be a good option for your hunting gear instead of a tent, safer from potential of theft.
I think you're right.
🤣😂🤣 the stepping stool! My wife has one just like it to reach the cabinets in our house lol
I'm short! blame god!
@@G2Outdoors I was cracking up! At least you are a good sport about it!
I’m 6’ with the same truck. I either lay at an angle, or use my Dac Truck Tent. Depends on the trip.
Major omission, where's the cooler? You went ten days without a cold drink and fresh produce/meat? Also, where's the cooking stove, dishwasher, clean/dirty clothes?
The shore power was genius. I have an amazingly comfortable cot I sleep on that has bungee cord looped all the way around the sleeping pad giving it a springy effect. There is still enough room to slide stuff under. I wonder if that would work in your truck? Great update.
Yeah I need to look at that. Good suggestion.
I just purchased the Leer 180XL and a bedrug and I am waiting for it to come in. I though about the marine plug but didn't know the name for it. Where did you get a water leak from.
Great video! Have you considered installing a battery(s) in the truck bed? I'm looking for heat sources that I can use in the mountains in the winter. An energy source and a diesel heater would round out the whole build. Take care.
Diesel heater rocks
I've used one of those lithium battery packs like a gola zero. Works great. Also, Mr. Buddy or electric ceramic heater works well. It's amazing how little heat it takes to keep the truck bed toasty.
Nice video thank you for the suggestions.
Love the marine plug idea. I just drove 8k miles to michigan and back. spent a month up there fishing for smallmouth and truck camping in my tundra. My bed is 6-5 and im 6-1. Was so perfect and surprisingly warm.
@Roger Komula no i drove to Michigan and back from phoenix Az which was 4k miles. And also drove 4k miles while in Mi.
Hey, you said you were going to talk about your Leer leak. What happened and how did you fix it? Great vids!
More night whiskey will fix the mattress issue.
Excellent point.
Greg, did you ever post the video about the bulkhead leak? I cant find it.
Gear tent is a great idea- I slide stuff under the truck and sometimes it still gets wet. I had the same problem with the foam; but, I could not find an air mattress that narrow. I ended up having to make an extension for my sleeping surface.
Good Job. How tall are you?
My truck bed is about an inch shorter than me. :(
damn man your the first ive seen to do the plug deal its genius!!!
Outstanding! 👍🏼
Make the bed diagonal. Still plenty of room
Take a look at the milliard memory foam mattress 4". I have one for my truck bed and absolutely love it. Can sleep 2 adults on it and never feel the hard bottom.
The plug is a great idea!
Do you have a video how you build the cook table? I love that idea.
Yawn! Sore hips, sore knees, smh!
What do you use for heat inside in cold night? I have mr. Buddy but I heard it’s unsafe so I didn’t use it.
Many videos showing Mr. Buddy is completely safe to use.
Good heads up on the extra cushion, door mat, and power plug! Can’t wait for more videos.
Any good ideas on heated blanket to run on an inverter or some ways to stay warm off grid?
Sometimes it pays to be 5'7" tall!
Do you keep your rifle in the cab or bed?
How do you transport a buck or doe?
I like the shore line idea. I'm definitely doing that with mine!
Hi. My name is Kristin. Love your videos. Can you tell me where to get a copy of your spreadsheet with your lost of camping essentials.
Thank uou
Hi Kristin. Unfortunately I accidentally deleted the spreadsheet! I can't find it.
I would never own a short bed truck. Ordered my f150 with the 6.5ft bed and love it. 157" wheel base.
So where do you put your hunting gear? Where do I put out deer?
Thought about an enclosed trailer? Or small camping trailer?
I have a Ford 6.5 bed also. I am 6' 5" so I barely fit. But just for clarification. 6.5 is also a short bed. 8' is long bed.
@@fredkemp1444 I didn't claim 6.5' was a long bed....that being said (or not said) getting a half ton truck with a quad cab/super crew and a 8' bed I don't think is possible. I do believe that an f250 can be configured as a super crew and 8' but that to many vary in trim levels.
Cool
How tall are you. Looking to do something similar to my short bed. I would have to sleep at an angle
5'7" - a non-hobbit sized person would need a longer truck bed. I just barely fit end to end. Luckily I generally sleep on my side so the short bed isn't an issue for me.
Where can I buy a Marine plug like you installed?
Right here.
amzn.to/40UVm9Q
Cool video. Agree with bedding. I am 6’3” and sleep in an F150 short bed. I use a futon mattress to sleep in, perfect for my back issues. I do not use a platform. With the plug, I mounted mine underneath the truck so I did not have to drill a hole in the topper. Did not want to void warranty, create a potential leak spot, and incorporated some anti-theft with it. Agree, simple is better.
What trekking poles are you using? I can't find any with that 'post' on the top you slide into the drilled holes. I found adj tarp poles - but those trekking poles look much sturdier. Thanks for the great ideas!
I have the same question. Any luck finding poles to use like this?
@@adamrice2862 No luck here - I was hoping he'd respond and share his secret
This is really great. Although instead of building a bed frame, I saw a guy just use a twin metal frame and bolt it into his truck, with plenty of space below for storage- I have a 1994 GMC Sierra 1500 extra cab , and of all things can’t seem to find a topper for it. The Marine plug is an excellent mod.
Keep looking for used camper shell on Facebook market place
I picked up my on the side of the road
It flow off a truck landed on corner from the impact it broke back & side windows
If no one has suggested… Your mattress is too soft. Medium dense foam … 3 or 4 inch thick … would probably solve your mattress problem.
Please explain to me why people buy full-size pickups with such short beds?
Why is it that so many people put all the weight on the same side of the truck? The weigh of the driver and the bed and draw space in this camper is an example of what I'm talking about. Is there a reason for this? Dom't make a left turn too fast!
Did you do a video on the leak fix? I searched your channel and cannot find one. What was your fix? My snug top isn’t very snug. Truck bed always ends up with water when it rains. I believe mine is coming from the bulk head as well.
On my last bikepacking trip we spent a night with our tents pitched in a lean-to so we were sleeping on the wooden plank floor. Under my air mattress, under my hips, I added my small Z-seat butt pad by therma-rest. Normally, hard ground hurts my hips, so I really expected the wood floor to be an issue, but... Perfect when I slept on my side.
My leer leaks too and I can't tell where REALLY. What did they do to fix yours?
Are you able to share the interior measurement from floor to ceiling with the Leer 180? Maybe floor to lip of the truck bed, and floor to ceciling overall. Like you, I need to be able to sit up. I cannot find any conversion that gives those measurements. Thanks!
I have a 1500 with a Leer 180XL can you sit up in the camper, how tall is the bed frame
Ak
Do you happen to know the height dimension inside of the leer 180? I’m torn between the leer 180 or the a.r.e. Mx. I can’t seem to get a defined answer. Some dealers I called said the mx series is an inch and half taller than the 180.
Simple build, probably the best I’ve seen
I have the same set up in my super duty.
I’m 5’10 and truck has 8’ bed
Black Foam is the best, you will not feel anything below it.
Can you tell me more about those adjustable hiking poles? It appears you were able to remove the handles, they seem to work perfect!
Get little champion inverter genny that an run on propane then you plug in anywhere runs clean and no degrading like ethanol.
where did you get the table legs. Great stuff!!!!\
What is the height of your bed? And what are the size of those bins?
Power idea is great but I went with a solar setup instead
Tell you what, that build is Awesome!
You were filmed by WKZZR?
Smurf legs? More like a lawn gnome🤣
where did u buy the marine plug?
Thanks for the tips!
Just saw this and i subscribed!
The marine plug f***en genius
Where is you gear check list?
Nice little setup !!
Get a cot from rei
I was wondering if you have done a follow up on fixing the leak? I don’t see a video listed anywhere.
I haven't. I get a fair amount of water in from the tailgate.
They do make trucks with 8 ft bed:)
I have one. It’s real nice.
Lol...that woulda been too smart of me!
"Camper shell leaks.... points out hole drilled in side! Lol, jk, great idea!
DONNIE BALL GAME! Hey man! hope CA is treating you well.
I’m curious to know since I’m new how do you avoid being carbon monoxide poisoning when sleeping in the bed when everything is closed?
I'm guessing he isn't running his truck.
When are you doing the video on fixing bulk head leaks?
I'm going to film it this month.
Voided cap warranty with that plug Hoke
Yup. I said so in the video.
Keep rubbing it in !!
That marine plug is a great idea. You could run an electric heater in there for really cold trips.
Yup exactly.
Are you able to sit up on your bed, with the Leer 180?
Yup.
Nice!
Did you sleep with the rear hatch and tail gate down?
No. I slept with those closed due to bugs. But I did sleep with the side windows open. They both have mosquito netting.
Get you a doghouse turkey blind for gear
Yeah that's a good idea. Are they waterproof?
Dang it Greg, now I got to go get a marine plug. Luckily I have the 6 foot box.
Yes. I wish I had the 6' box. Marine plug is MONEY.
@@G2Outdoors agree will come in handy even at home. run an extension cord and I can charge my dakota lithium and jackery right in the truck.
@@davetoms63 The Jackery! I need to decide on which battery pack I want to buy. Currently I'm using a Li-Ion trolling motor battery with a 1,500 watt inverter. The Jackery and Goal Zero options are bit more plug-n-play then what I have.
Just received my scentlok late season base layers for under my scentlok wind brace outfit juat as you mentioned and man you were right on!! Very comfortable, super quiet , just made very well and Just right for all day hunts in late October early November here in south western pa! Thanks again..God bless
Rock on! Glad it worked for you.
💪💪💪
I highly recommend the exped megamat. It isn't cheap but it is most comfortable sleeping pad ever.
Ok, cool. I'll google it. thx!
If only you could find them. They are OOS at REI and way over priced on amazon.
Good idea on the gear tent. Just got back from North Dakota yesterday. We rented a RV site so we had power and water. The campground we stayed at only allowed one tent at the site so we couldn't put the other one up. It worked out fine but I would recommend one that you buy have multi use.
If we had a smaller one we would have probably satellite camped more and not have to drive so far back to camp every night. Just something to think about. Instead of buying one that is like 30$ from Walmart maybe get a 2 man you can actually pack if needed in the future
I pretty much settled on the T4 Gazelle Overland tent. It's tall enough to stand up in, plus I can sleep in it and still have enough room for gear.
@@G2Outdoors Sweet. Will have to look into it. Always love seeing what others look into. Definitely great idea to be able to stand up
Extra yoga mat for bed mattress?
Great idea!
Be careful with the air mattress, they can be quite cold to sleep on. I wonder if a fabric cot type setup wouldn’t be more comfortable.
I just need to figure it out. I will and I'll post the updates.
@@G2Outdoors - have you tried a mattress? Not a standard one, but like the kind my kids had when they were toddlers?
What happens when u kill a deer? Where would u put the deer or would u quarter it up first?
Good point. I'll address that in the next video. But essentially I'll use a Jet Sled cart, or a trailer hitch cart depending on the setup.
Him and his buddies cook it on a fire and eat it in the woods.
I have a 4" memory foam mattress in mine. Wanted a lil more cushion so i went to walmart and bought a 2" folding workout mat to go under it. Takes the edge off for my side sleeping
Yup. I think that can work. Gonna try it.
@@G2Outdoors yea think the concept that makes it work is that its a more dense foam. So its more of a cushion for the wood. Because the soft memory foam compresses so much that you end up hitting the wood. Need that denser foam against it
I lived in mine for a month when i was in taxidermy school. It was in the 30s at night so it was super comfortable sleeping with my sleeping bag. People think im crazy for doing that but it saved me a ton on hotels and it honestly was very comfortable
@@blzn04 I was very comfortable...even with the mattress being not quite perfect.
Did you experience any condensation issues?
Nope. And 2 nights it was 34 degrees. The Bed Rug solves ALL the condensation issues.
@@G2Outdoors do you have a fan or ceiling vent of any kind? Thanks for the info.
What do you do with the game meat after harvested?
You would have to ask the other guys at tethrd. Greg never connects......I kid
