Got my M4 Max 16 (64ram, 4tb) yesterday and migrated from my M1 Max 16 (same specs) and the M4 is night and day difference. Wow. This is what I needed for everything I do. Pro photography, publishing, sound mixing for television shows, graphics, etc. I can leave all the Adobe and photography products open, and nothing slows down. Plus it's lighter and thinner. :) love it.

The purpose of this machine will be to for everyday tasks (conference calls, e-learning/dev work, photo editing, multi tasking, and AAA gaming using Crossover). I have a mid 2012 mbp that a family member is still using where I used OCLP to run Sequoia and it does it so effortlessly without issue. That machine was my primary machine for the 5 years I used it before it was put on a shelf. Fast forward and when the calendar switchers over to 2025 that will be over 13 years of value. I don't do video editing of any kind; I just use if for Photoshop and Lightroom and other plugins that I use. I've never looked back to a Windows machine and quite frankly, I think I will never go back. My previous machines were also MBP's, but running on the Intel architecture. When Apple created the M1 chip, that was a game changer. Everyone else is playing catch-up. The M chip will just continue to improve by the way things are moving forward. Unless my machine breaks down, I really don't have a reason to upgrade. Would I love to have an M4, of course! Who wouldn't? However, financially that isn't feasible at this moment. By the way, I subscribed to your channel.

Still using an M1 Max for music production with Logic and graphic design with the Adobe suite. I make quite maximalist EDM with hundreds of tracks and heavy processing, and I’ve yet to find the limit of the chip. In Illustrator there are some several second waits when dealing with raster effects in large scale print projects, so I could see myself benefiting from the ludicrous single core speed of the M4, but at the same time, I can just lower the resolution temporarily and continue on my merry way. The thing is that for me, “is it time to upgrade” is kinda nonsensical because for the work I do and the work most people do, if the chip is fast enough for all intents and purposes, that’s not something that will change regardless of what new chips come out. Like you said, I think the demographic of people that *need* the M4 Max is a limited subset of 3D artists or data science professionals that profit from their work. For me, I won’t be upgrading until my M1 Max is no longer supported, and I think I speak for a lot of others here too.

Great video Oliur, you've got me thinking! I'm currently using an M1 Pro 1TB 14inch mainly for video editing (4k s-log footage to projects as long as 35min), and moderate photo. It's been an incredible experience and allowed me to produce more videos, increase the quality of my production and a great media experience. The only reason I'd be tempted to upgrade now is for more RAM (currently at 16gb,) more storage and better battery. I travel a lot and it's frustrating have to edit off an external drive given the file sizes I work with. The RAM fills up quite quickly when I have all my editing tools, source tabs etc open. As a business machine the upgrade would be valuable, I'm considering an M4 Max with at least 24GB of Ram and 4TB.

Hello, So i have a Base M1 Pro 14' Macbook Pro (256gb,16gb). I've had it since launch, and I mostly use it for homework and other homework related programs. I am pursuing a bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, and i often have to use Circuit simulators or Coding software and so far everything works great without a hitch. I did however decide to upgrade to the M4 Pro with 1TB storage and 24GB since i often run out of RAM (I use 2-3 displays usually for my desk setup and coding apps eat RAM idk why). I also got that Nano-texture display so hopefully it all works for me.

I'm a programmer and I have an M1 Max, but that M4 Pro is sooo tempting! 🔥 Because the CPU performance is almost 2x as the M1 Max, but the GPU performance is not really better. Of course, M4 Max would be ideal, but it's too expensive for me right now.

The M1 series is still absolutely incredible though. Should I have opted to get the M1 series when it launched, I’d still be rocking with it today. The only reason I got 4 terabytes of storage is because I actually have a home server with many many terabytes of storage and have become accustomed to never running out of space.
But I really appreciate the final thing you said. Yeah, I have never really been one to need the top of the line (M Max chips) but, then again, I also need a little more than average joe. It’s great man!

I highly recommend visiting the apple store and taking a look at the nano texture to everyone who is considering a new MBP. As you said, for people who constantly work in different environments it can be an absolute game changer. Hot take from me: The Base Model M4 16GB / 512 GB MacBook Pro should not exist.. if you want that, just get a MacBook Air.

I currently still rock with my MacBook Air M1. I use it mainly for my student life and it’s been the biggest investment I have ever made. Though, besides university, I am starting to learn about photography and what I have been able to do with my Mac is surprisingly amazing considering the non pro capabilities.
Though I would like to get an M4 MacBook Pro since editing big video projects on my M1 Air makes it swear a little bit.

If you're on a desktop setting and your external devices keep unmounting then something is wrong with your set-up. I've used external SSDs for boot devices and extra storage, for many years, and they've been reliably connected on my Macs. That's why *I find it odd you paid so much for 4TB internal storage for a device that spends 90% of its time on your desk.*
