@heroarmorzero Gainax's budget was shot, and because they weren't meeting deadlines soon enough, either, they had to improvise by saying that Instrumentality already happened. But their budget wouldn't even support the illustration for THAT... or much of anything for that matter, so they put some characters through a huge psychological session with a disembodied Dr. Phil.
Actually, the psychological component of NGE was a result of not meeting deadlines, either, I believe.
Want to but haven't seen evangelion yet have to say though it's opening is one if the best openings I have heard :3

This must have been released during the final days of the 8-bit era. '95 is pretty late for a Nintendo game. Hell the PSX and the N64 were right around the corner from being released. Dig the the song though. Hallelujah for the interweb, and it's access to old video game music.
@seg162 The last thing you said is pretty much true for the last two episodes of the TV version, but in the earlier episodes the inspiration mainly came from Anno's time of clinical depression. At least that's what I've heard and read.
