I think it was mainly a legal issue. Basing a character so closely to a real life person likely opens up Behaviour to a ton of potential lawsuits, regardless what the guy did. Although I do wonder if there was any pressure from China to not have a Chinese killer. We still don't have one, but we have two from Japan and one from South Korea.
Since China is pretty much the Money Maker of the West like America was a some times ago, and since Chine unlike America isn't the kind of place you can joke about, they really care about their image, if you make fun of them even in the slightest, let's just say that banning your game would be enough to make you lose a lot of money

The doctor being somewhat based on a real person also opened future chapters to that; while a lot of early killers were based on fictional slashers, Doctor, Clown, Ghostface, and Artist are all at least partially based on real people.

Same I remember that I was pretty into DBD when Evolve went down (2018, RIP) and Doctor was one of the killers I was the most fascinated by because of it's fear mechanic and the jump scares just added to the atmosphere surrounding him and what I wish the game delve more into (because you know, I'd expect a game about a killer purchasing 4 survivors trying to escape would be more about a game of hide and seek that's actually a bit creepy and not a run around a circle simulator), still it was really cool and I am disappointed it was removed

The Doctor has always been the number 1 killer that genuinely creeped me out. His chilling electric laugh, his harsh music, the Mk Ultra background; his theme of absolute sadistic insanity just screamed through his eyes and forced grin. Single-handedly got me into DbD, and is still one of my favorites

One of my first games ever was vs pre-rework Doctor on Lery's, it was so scary for me, because of jumpscares and being new to game, and made me love the game from start
Old doc was scarier. Remember failing madness checks at that time would reset the madness meter. And you were stuck in madness 2-3 which meant that he knew were you are at all times.
The fact that the dbd Devs released the first Asian killer (The Spirit) an exact year after the doctor makes me think when they changed the doctor to be American, they began looking at other Asian inspirations for a first Asian killer. They settled on the Onryo of Japanese folklore, which are spirits who vow vengeance or violence against the living.

They need to bring back old doctor jumpscares, cuz as he works now he’s basically just a “find survivors locations and also make them unable to vault or drop pallets” being in madness doesn’t feel that unrewarding.
When I first started playing DBD, this was the first DLC I bought. I loved how creepy and scary Doctor looked, and that was the only reason I wanted to play him. I didn't start until around when Oni came out, however. Learning how he was before is interesting.
Yes, he had to swap stances, but he also had a passive build up of madness to people in his terror radious. In fact there was a meme build called "Wold Wide Doctor" running with distressing / monitor and abuse / ruin / overwelming presence so people around the map was getting easly madness build up. Also the doctor was also, like many other killers, brought in for "fix a problem"; Gens go too fast? Introducing Hag and Hex: Ruin (wich back then was a slow down on gen rushing, aka countering the meta of back then) What Doctor brought? The first step of "DbD isen't a stealth game", he had and still have a lot of anti stealth and easy tracking power such as the copy who tell where survi are / random survi screams + warning cause the Devs wanted it more focused on the action and the chases than having 4 Snake wannabe (mostly Claudettes clad in black or Ace) slow the game to a crawl
Gen Rushing is still a meta today, the Meta really went from Ultra Stealth to Genrushing to 4billion health states to no hook and 4billion health states back to 4 billion health states only to end back to genrushing when the devs removed those other metas. I feel if they managed to fix Gen Rushing the game will be finally balanced, there other meta other that... right?

@@alessandroseverino8222 I mean Dead Hard is much better now, it's pretty much a Sprint Burst on demand, if it only protected and didn't give you the injury boost I'd say it would be balanced but now it's much better since it's used where the only option is to swing and if you swing, not only did you fuck up but now they get sprint burst.
I feel like they also made a good call by changing this because it could be incredibly offensive to the victims of this very real and very personal crime if doctor had kept his original design. It would've just been too on the nose. At least with his inspiration from MK Ultra, it's slightly less personal and puts more distance between the inspiration and resulting character

I played old doctor, around 2018 u could switch back to punishment mode while u were releasing a shock, so it was more smooth Also when survivors snapped out of it they went back to tier 2, instead of tier 1 as it is today, meaning that illusions will spawn forever (as they spawn while in tier 2 and 3) when they reworked doctor, most of his add-ons were the same except obedience, but nowdays every secondary effect of his add-ons is the iridicent category of them How do I know that? Bcs order used to set up fake palets 32 m away from u if the brown was used, 64 m for yellow and infinite for purple/carter notes, and it's the same for every other add-on

Now he's dominating all tournaments including majors and people are starting to hate him so much. I started out as a Killer main then switched to Survivor the last couple of years. Now this made me wanna go back to Miller and use Doctor as I was a Wraith main. Right now it's Ace master race or nothing lol. But yeah may have to try Doc out cause I have t used him since his old version.

they changed his surgeon outfit to his new look so he doesn't have the same face as he use to the outfit was changed. also you didn't mention how they changed lerys twice from the old map to the dark grey one that looked great to the bright one we have now
I’m bummed out they made the changes. The killer inspirations that are pulled from real life tend to make for the best lore(even though some of the best lore in dbd is pretty mediocre). It’s why the clown’s lore is one of my favorites. He’s a psychopathic hedonistic serial killer that could actually existed. Because people like Gacy did exist. But stil, it might be for the best since it may not have been the most respectful to the victims.

The Doctor is (in my opinion) one of the most irritating killers to play against because people love to abuse his power way too much and make it unfair for survivors, but he's definitely one of my favorite killers nonetheless.
