In 1948 I was born and brought up there until 18 then joined the army. Haven't been back there much and not in the last 21 years. Hard to believe just how much it has changed and modernised. Love it. Was a great place for kids with all the open spaces.
Yes Pam. The city has more modern buildings and the mall is amazing. The one thing that hasn’t changed is the people. Superb, down to earth characters throughout the generations. Glorious.

Your coverage made us want to visit. Great to hear a positive narrative. Life is really about whether your glass is 1/2 full or 1/2 empty. Good on ya mate!
I live in Invercargill. Your video was interesting and portrayed the main city areas pretty well. Whether it is New Zealand's best city depends on your point of view I suppose. It also depends on your age and what you want out of life. I have lived all over NZ - Tokoroa, West Auckland, Long Beach in Russell in the Bay of Islands, Ohaeawai near Kaikohe and now in Invercargill. I have visited just about every corner of NZ and have worked for long periods in Wellington and Christchurch. If you are young and want excitement and glamour then Invercargill is certainly not the best. If you like a quiet family life with lots of outdoor activities it's pretty good I would say. The surrounding scenic areas are beautiful and nearby coastal places are stunning, Omaui is one of my favourite places in the whole of NZ. In general the people are very friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere and vibe is reminiscent of the 1970's NZ that, at the age of 79, I personally love. Finally, the weather is unpredictable, to say the least, but real weather extremes are happily absent, unlike some other parts of the country that I have lived in.
@@jJustPlayingNZ great summation. I remember playing tennis as a kid in a Invercargill at Waihopai tennis club and it was 1015pm and still able to play. Great lifestyle and amazing people. That’s the key ingredient.
@shirleytownsend3858 I visited a few times already so know its spectacular. Looking forward to heading down again and seeing what else has opened up down there.
I've spent most of my life in Invercargill. The city is boring, the cafes pretentious and overpriced. We've got a new mall which has sucked the retail life from the rest of the city, a council which is stuck on building a museum (which will not bring money unto the city) whike ditching renovations for a stadium that has brought huge smounts of money into Invercargill. There is virtually no night life except boozing at the plethora of bars. No cafe open or anywhere to hang out if you're not into drinking or bowling. There's no concept of funky in the city and the art scene is pretty much controlled by the who's who (I know because I worked in a gallery). The heritage buildibgs are among the best in NZ, but we've had councils for more than 30 years who never cared to work with owners of the buildings. It's dull, too conservative and goodness help anyone who dares to be negative about it though. Before anyone thrashes me for knocking it, the only reason I'm here is family. Admittedly though, Queens Park is lovely. That's the only star here.
Let’s not forget however, that like most provincial centres, a previous National govt., gutted life in these locales, to centralise to Auckland. personally, i like the quieter life here. There are many really great restaurants and cates here serving pretty much any food type you could ask for. And don’t forget, the weather here is optimal, cold in winter and, sometimes in summer, it can get really hot. I love it!
The museum has a unique sub Antarctic display which unfortunately hasn't been see for at least five years because the building has been condemned. The city is uniquely located near the largest National Park in the country, also close to Stewart Is.,the Catlin's,two hours south of Queenstown, overall not a bad place to live!
