The backwards wii compatibility + the legacy library on the VC is juuuust enough for me to keep it plugged in. It's pretty much the Zelda/Metroid/F-Zero/Pikmin machine for me.
@@videotasticz You can play pretty much every Metroid that matters on it save for Samus Returns 3DS. Most of the major Zeldas (missing some of the handheld titles that are available on 3DS) too which is still lacking on Switch.
Here in Brazil Wii U has become a cheaper option for those who want to play games like Zelda BOTW, Bayonetta 2, DKCTF and others without having to spend an absurd amount of money to buy a Nintendo Switch and its games. I really love the Wii U, in my opinion it has one of the best waves of Nintendo exclusives especially when compared to consoles like Game Cube. In some aspects I even prefer the Wii U to the Switch, having IDs, Folder System, input for headsets straight from the control, music on the menu and in the eShop in addition to all the social and interactive system of Miiverse are sorely missed for me on the Nintendo Switch.
Only bad thing is why they didn't car3 to update Minecraft to just be like the PS4 one and have the MC community to volunteer to update the Wii U, it will be twice as long but far better
The only thing I absolutely hate about the Wii U is that it IS backwards compatible with GameCube discs, its just locked out and a simple soft-mod can override the lockout and make your Wii U read GameCube discs on the Virtual Wii Dashboard. It had the capability to do it, they just chose not to make it available.
To be fair, this isn’t just a Wii U thing. Nintendo started axing Gamecube BC on the original Wii itself in 2011, and quite frankly, I’m surprised it lasted that long given the Wii’s mass market demographic. Funny story: when I bought my first backup Wii when I first started experimenting with softmodding in the mid 2010s, the console casing was fairly beat up and scratched but under the doors with the GC controller ports and memory cards was like, completely pristine. The previous owners obviously never even opened those doors never mind actually putting in a GC game lmao.
@@strykah92 That''s the reason why the first vertical edition of the Wii is still the best. Even if you mod your later version, you lose the GC controller connection, and that's quite frankly a shame (but at least compatibility is still there, no matter what Wii / Wii U you own).
What's even more insulting is they made an official Gamecube controller adapter for the Wii U! It works on Wii U Smash and I think a small handful of other games. They'll let you use the controller but not Gamecube games themselves. It's like a Tinder date taking their clothes off but saying "No touching!" Such a tease!
@@notrenbanney2450 They're both extremely different despite both having that JRPG anime look. I don't know how my opinions stack up to everyone else's (because I've never actually seen a poll on people's opinions comparing the two), but I liked XC2 a lot, and I still like XCX much more. It's my favorite exclusively single player game of all time, and in my top 5 games ever. The combat is FAR more customizable in XCX, and while XC2's combat opens up quite a bit once you get farther into the game and open up Elemental Bursts and Chain Attacks, in my opinion, there's a lot more decision making in XCX, for the better. After a while, I found that I just did the same thing in XC2 battle after battle. Get a number of elemental orbs on the main target, dealing about 2/3 of my foe's HP in the process, and then chain attack for the KO. And that required paying attention and making decisions, but XCX lets you customize the decisions that you had to make far more. And once you really get into the Overdrive mechanic, XCX's combat just becomes that much more interesting. I liked that XC2 let you experiment with different blades and elements on different drivers, but the level of customization in XCX is in its own tier, not just in the realm of Xenoblade games but in the realm of open-world RPGs in general. There are many different classes and weapon types you can master, 17 different characters to control, and two completely different methods of combat, both of which vary greatly and are customizable in their own way (I won't say more to avoid spoilers). Additionally, exploration was far more fun (and rewarding, imo) in XCX. There is a much larger and completely non-linear area to cover than in XC2, with no loading zones, tons of secret areas, and constant rewards for exploring farther, opening caches and defeating normal and unique enemies. There are some seriously insane superbosses, and the endgame grinding is tedious at times but extremely rewarding if you are interested in pushing your characters and damage to their upper limits (I personally wasn't interested in that after my first couple of playthroughs, but I did some late-game grinding on subsequent playthroughs). There is an absolute plethora of sidequests, and you're just constantly rewarded for completing quests as you play through the game. There are a number of item-gathering quests that can be a real bother, but if you just look up the location of the item you need online, none of them will take you long. There's no real in-game way to know where they are, though, and that is a drag. There are also a bunch of party-member specific quests and affinity hangouts to complete, and they are pretty satisfying on average. There are a few duds mixed in, though. If there was one main complaint I had with XCX, it's that the story didn't have as much to it as I'd have liked. That's not to say there's nothing there, but you often spend a lot of time between story quest chapters, completing other quests and exploring new areas in order to unlock the next story chapter, and those fill out a good portion of the playthrough time, unlike XC2's story, which was very involved all the way through the playthrough despite a good number of sidequests to complete. There are also fewer "significant" story chapter events than in XC2, like when meeting Pyra and Morag, and when leaving Vandham, for example. However (and there's a possibility this isn't the most popular opinion out there), I think the world itself very much makes up for that. Conversations and side quests with NPCs build the lore and provide explanations for other story and non-story events, and they make the world feel more inhabited and the story events feel far more significant on their own. And the basic idea of the game is about surviving and forging a path for your survival and humanity's growth on a foreign world, so I've felt that the story doesn't need to be very in-depth for the story and game as a whole to be exciting, especially considering the world is absolutely massive and has a lot to do in it. It's hard to say if you'll like XCX just based on you either liking or not liking XC2, just because they're so different. And the characters are less animated when they speak in XCX. The story is less fantasy-esque, even though there are plenty of those elements present as well. But I will say that the people I've heard talk about liking this game like it A LOT. I really hope it gets a port to the Switch so that more people can experience it, because a game that awesome only getting a Wii U release is a pretty big heartbreak.
I am a huge Wii U fan and collector. Thank you for paying so much attention to this really underrated console. Little Inferno is implemented really well on the Wii U too.
@@vastneon There's also some series that came before Nintendo changed the series name to Xenoblade, the old forgotten series is called xenogears and xenosaga when Square Enix still have the rights to it.
As somebody who plays the game competitively, I'll also point out that Pokken on Switch has a 3v3 battle mode; an added Replay viewer/browser; an improved training mode with a record/playback function; battle groups/group matches rather then just vs codes for playing against friends/in groups; a sort of "Omega form" feature so different stage backgrounds can be used while sticking to the default competitive stage size, some additional stages and added customization options.
Dont know what parallel universe you come from where the switch eshop isnt just a shovelware buffet. The wii u eshop was just nicer. And no, nintendo screwing over wii u owners by porting wii u games does not count as backwards compatibility. Im not saying that the wii u was better, simply that theres a few things that were better with it.
More solid feeling hardware? The Wii U is the worst console design in history to date lol. The switch “Hardware” literally craps in the Wii U in every way shape & form. That arguement alone says *I love my wii u no matter how shitty everyone says it is *I cant afford/dont own a switch
@@johnfrankster3244 Wow. No need for hysterics, everyone's entitled to an opinion. I have never enjoyed how the Switch 'feels' in undocked mode. It is entirely due to the design of the joycons. At best it feels flimsy and fragile. At worst they break easily. By contrast, the Wii U gamepad has a definitive Solid if somewhat Chunky feel to it. Even with the rabidly inferior software. The Switch Lite has a decent feel but my overly large hands take issue being cramped on the tiny thing. The Switch online store is a clutter filled mess that hasn't been updated or improved on in over 4 years. The Wii U has a simple and well built store that I find far superior, even if limited in quantity. Even the 3ds has a better online store that's easier to navigate. To each his own tho.
Watching this has made me feel good about the fact I got a Wii U when it first released. I loved using the dual screen and adjust using that to my advantage in games. And I say it’s fun getting to play all those games I missed on the Wii, as well as replaying the ones I have 😊
@@jorge_m-h4g Honestly, the 3ds is fundamentaly worse than the Wii U. I'm not saying the 3ds was bad, but a lot of it's biggest games were inferior versions of Wii U games. For example: Mk7 < Mk8, MM 3ds < MM Wii U, 3d land < 3d world Smash 4 3ds < Smash 4 Wii U. In terms of the Switch, yes, it is technically superior to the Wii U, but maybe he can't afford one, already has one, or just doesn't want one. I'm not trying to say the 3ds and Switch suck, but maybe don't throw your unwanted opinion in the comments for a video talking about the thing you don't like, or at least be more polite about it instead of attacking someone just because of their opinion.
@@Starling_54 lmao I can share my opinion anytime I want whether people like it or not also you’re wrong about it the 3DS has more better games than the Wii U it also has games that are not on the Wii U. And yes switch is better than Wii U.
@@Ds_is_i haha, right there with you dude. I love my Wii U so much I went out and bought a backup. It’s crazy how much I love the Wii U. I’m just sorry I didn’t see the light when it was contemporary.
I got mine this week, always wanted one and it actually smashed my expectations with it's library. The virtual console is insane and it just makes me sadder and sadder every day it's not on the Switch, the literal perfect console for VC.
I bought a Wii U a few months ago and, yeah, I went through the whole "Oh my God, I actually spent my actual money on a fucking Wii U", but after a while I came to my senses and began to appreciate the consoles abundance of personality. And Windwaker.
I bought a Wii U five months ago and I absolutely love the system. Yeah, there are some things that are less than ideal when it comes to operating the system in general and to all the different controller options, but I dont know, that's just part of the joy in using it. Hardware and games are still pretty cheap and there are so many great titles available for Wii and Wii U that I would definitely recommend getting one!
I still play Virtual Console, Wii games, and certain Wii U games, so unless the Switch gets all or most of these, I’m still keeping my Wii U plugged in
@@jorge_m-h4g What I'm talking about is you making yourself look like an ass, throwing unnecessary hate on a system for no apparent reason whatsoever. You already gave yourself a bad name with you doing this crap consistently on any Wii U related video and you really expect folks to come and sub to your channel, regardless?
Not gonna lie, the library on the Wii U is more impressive than on the Switch right now imo. It’s surprising how many good games are on there; the available Wii U titles alone constitute a better catalogue than many other consoles, but the backwards compatibility with the Wii and the Virtual Console really put it over the edge
The only game left on the wii u is honestly the two zelda hd remasters and xenoblade x. But modding it to play gamecube, wii, n64, snes, etc, its essentially a new wii when it comes to emulation
@@jorge_m-h4g Virtual console. The console has an amazing library of past titles that you can play on one system. And it also has an amazing collection of original titles plus backwards compatibility with wii
I got the Wii U when it first released and I still have it and I'm never giving it up. Criminally underappreciated system with tons of really great games.
My Wii U still gets lots of play. Have over 100 games, mostly digital. Can play ALL Skylanders games on Wii U. EShop was great. Amazing Zelda console, and playing BOTW on it. Great Lego game machine too. Have such a huge backlog of games on it will be playing it for years and years... just like my 3DS. Thank you Jon for reminding me of all those great Wii games though!
Hello, since you own the skylander games do you know if there's a way to play them without the toy portal thing? Ive seen gameplay videos on these games and they seem really fun, but I heard you need to have a portal and a toy or something like that to play.
@@bandicootsmwcentral2950 The portal is needed. If you get the one for Superchargers it should be compatible with all the games. And, all the portals can be found used for next to nothing. For most of the games most of the figures are dirt cheap and can probably be bought in lots for a few dollars. Seems just the collectibles are the ones that are crazy high. Games are so very much fun!
Exactly, the homebrew makes Wii U amazing. But, it is a small pain to go into the Wii menu to access Nintendont. Unless I'm using an antiquated system and its different now.
@@donhuevas Thanks for throwing that out there. But as the other commenter mentioned homebrew can be finicky. I looked into it more because of that and I just want to use what works. What I use is still probably the most user friendly. I was just pointing out a minor inconvenience.
if you homebrewd your WII U(and hopefully installed Haxchii(or however its spelled)you can install gamecube titles as Virtual console titles using Title injection. Its as userfriendly as Homebrew gets Install homeberw, Create Gamecube injection on PC, install on WII U. Bamm, you can now play gamecube titles on wii u from the wii u menu(granted only via Gamepad iirc)
@@luisalpjax3929 There's a lot to be said about being able to game from the living room vs in a separate space, closed off, on your PC. The Switch basically decimated my PC gaming time because of its library and ability to not just be at my PC (and ever since COVID, now it's a break from my "workplace")
@@luisalpjax3929 there is more to a gaming experience than the ability to render it at maximum quality. What might be the best experience for you is not the ideal for others, and that can also vary greatly by game. There is no objective best experience. Quick example: I could play Enter the Gungeon on my TV with my switch, or on my gaming PC at my desk. I would much rather play that on the couch. You won't catch me playing FPS games on the couch, I'd much prefer the mouse/keyboard. But because of that, I now play FPS games a lot less.
@@grambottle033 render at maximum quality? thats you projecting, pc gaming literally offers everything except mobility, it is quite literally the best experience possible if you just want to sit down and have that place to game
The only downside to Hyrule Warriors on Switch is the lack of motion controls. I loved swinging the wiimote around while playing that game from a stationary bike. It was like riding on the back of Epona.
Only the Japanese version of Tokyo Mirage Sessions on the Wii U is uncensored. It was still censored for the North American version. Not sure about the PAL version though.
The Wii U is my go to Nintendo machine cause it plays everything. As for GameCube games if you have homebrew on it you are able to play them and they can even be played with the GameCube controller using the official adapter
As a huge Sonic fan, I'd say "download the demo first" (if it's still online). It was so horrendous I gave up on the idea of buying the game (and it takes a lot to take me away from Sonic). The speedrun phase is so choppy and laggy it affects the physic.
My modded Wii U is how I exclusively play Gamecube games now. HDMI output, every game saving to the SD card so no more running out of memory card space, and 1 to 1 perfect emulation. Plus broadband adapter support if you've ever wanted to try it out. Dolphin is great for running Gamecube games at higher resolutions, but unless you have a fairly beefy PC, stutters end up happening and honestly it's easier for me to pick up and play on Wii U. Official Gamecube support on Wii U would have boosted its value astronomically, Nintendo really should have jumped on that when they could.
I bought my WiiU during black Friday 2015, it came with Splatoon already installed & my primary reason for purchasing it was to play Splatoon so my WiiU for the time I used it was pretty much a Splatoon machine but I plan to set it back up after I move, I should play other stuff on it.
+ToontownAndCpenguin My Splatoon 1 machine is one of my favorite consoles of all time (and if I were _forced to pick_ between it and my other favorites, the Game Cube and Playstation 2, I'd probably pick the Wii U). I got the 2015 Black Friday Deluxe bundle with the digital Splatoon and Smash, too.
I know that you probably can't mention it but Gamecube compatibility is native on the Wii U. You can mod it quickly and easily and add Gamecube titles easily to the Wii U home screen. With that I can play every game from every Nintendo system that ever came out. That's why I still use my Wii U as a daily machine and my Switch on occasion when something new comes out. Switch is great, but the Wii U is such a retro box that with a minimal amount of modding can play every title from every console that came before it.
Still my favorite party game system, and the system that still has the most Zelda games (thanks to Virtual Console). Unless it dies completely (literally by hardware failure) I'm keeping it on the shelf.
i sadly bought my wiiu a year before the switch came out. i was and still am a broke teenager. I had so many fun days with my online friends, i sadly suddenly left and can't find them anywhere (if you're from austria and you have/had a wiiu, write me. i *need* to find you again)
I just started modding my systems. Started with my psp. Then my dsi and just did my Wii U. It’s been super fun to download all the games for it and I can’t wait to play all the Wii U games I haven’t played!
As someone who never owned a Wii U, you do manage to make it sound exciting! I think the biggest draws for me are legacy content and some of their exclusives. As a system I still don’t like the idea, although ZombieU looks like it has great functions. The thing now is still desperately clinging on as we always do that switch has these things around the corner. We need the Windwaker/TP ports. We need a virtual console of sorts, or at least an ability to play the missing NES/SNES games. We NEED N64 content, like how that isn’t a thing yet blows my mind. Nintendo has such a rich library of games that for some fans are going completely unplayed if you didn’t own an original or the Wii U. So yeah, you’ve tempted me for sure (good job!) but I think when the switch is winding down for good is when I’ll make my choice. Once I know the stuff I want is actually never coming to switch. And by then you know the next console will bring it all back anyway and make us start the cycle all over again!
You can play the absolute entirety of the nintendo library on a modded wiiu, including many essential classics that the switch doesn't have or cost a fortune to buy
Actually on the Wii U version of the Breath of the Wild, you have to use the gamepad for certain shrines. It would have been awesome to use the gamepad for menus also.
The Wii U can load every Mario Party that matters with a little help, and it's basically my party console now. There's not much on Switch to replace it yet and I doubt there will be.
I use the Wii U for the Virtual Console in general. That and a 2-in1 for playing Wii games. It still has a place on the entertainment center for awhile.
ZombiU is easily one of my favorite zombie games. Just needed more variety in combat and weapons. Aside from frame rate issues and limited combat, a good game.
I got a Wii U for Christmas in 2013 with Super Mario 3D World. After that, I fell in love with games like DKC: Tropical Freeze, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Yoshi's Woolly World and so many more! It was fun for the time, but when the Switch came out, I sold my Wii U for it when I saw Tropical Freeze was gonna be ported to it. But, I still look back at my memories with the Wii U from 2013 to 2017.
Even for most of the ports, I'd rather go with the Wii U versions. In most cases, they're MUCH cheaper, and I don't see the minimal extras as justification for the price. Also, I didn't realize that many games were still exclusive! :)
I just bought a WiiU for 35 bucks from a local thrift store. Came with donkey Kong tropical freeze and Mario 3d world and Nintendo land downloaded. I was more excited about this than when I got my switch lol. Came with everything and 3 sets of wii nunchucks and the sensor bar too. Surprised at how well it was taken care of.
Why? Because it's one of Nintendo's best and most underrated consoles. And, in my humble opinion, it's far better than the Switch (the UI is miles ahead, it feels so alive, nostalgic, warm and comforting).
I personally disagree about it being better, but it defiantly has charm and stands out compared to other consoles. Plus, Xenoblade Chronicles X. That game alone makes me want to get a Wii U.
At this point in time, the Wii U is easily the closest thing we'll get to a legacy retro console given the VC collection. Not to mention Woolly World is easily superior to Crafted World, yes the 3DS version exists but hey, bigger scene and better visuals.
Wii U has Netflix and is the best way to play Wii games. I don't think anyone should be buying one nowadays, but I don't regret getting it at launch. I actually just bought Rayman Legends for it the other day because that's the definitive version.
Netflix will sadly go away soon, It did on the 3ds (Or it is soon I cant remember), But if it did already go away on 3ds, Wii u is soon, I love the wii u, I don't regret having it ethier.
I still use my Wii U. I got it in 2013 and I always have loved it. It was my first console where collecting new games, playing old ones and waiting for upcoming news was always exciting for me. I'll always be super nostalgic for it. The Wii U was is and always will be great in my humble (and correct and objective) opinion.
Always just called a novelty, but I always loved to have a map and quick access on the Gamepad screen. "LEGO CITY Undercover" made it into a crime investigation gadget where you also had the other characters pop up on that screen to communicate in with you. And I had loads of fun with "Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag" on the Wii U, basically having the Gamepad as my treasure map.
LEGO CITY Undercover also started out as a Wii U exclusive but did well enough that it got ported to every other console. The Switch version seems clunky and I almost wish I had a Wii U just for this game.
@@koreyf I was rather disappointed when I heard about how terrible the port performs. The original may have a bit of framerate drops at a few moments but overall has been great. Best LEGO game with also a bunch of likable original characters and a fun collectathon world to play through. I play Wii U a bunch lately. Catching up with some of the eshop games that I had skipped for other games at the time. Also enjoying VirtualConsole games as well. Never Alone, Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros 3 (e-World) and Pokémon Pinball Ruby & Sapphire were the latest games I played through. And as stated in the video, the Wii U has loads of great games it supports.I know, people can say that about a bunch of now retro consoles. I guess it depends simply on how much you like to jump between platforms and try out stuff. =3
I liked the Wii U back in its time. I still think it's a neat console, and I feel like it would have had a much better legacy if the Switch didn't get most of its best games.
Reasons to buy a wii U in 2021: You can pick it up for 1/3 of the switch price and still be able to play mario 3D world, pokken tournament, splatoon, legends of zelda, mario kart 8 and more for wayyy cheap Only thing switch and wii U both have that is significantly better on switch is super smash bros (ultimate) For the price of just the switch (£299 on amazon) you can get a wii U (£120 on ebay for a good condition one) and 2-3 amiibo’s and like 6 games So i think its better to get a wii U if your on a budget but if you want to be able to play newer games then get the switch I have them both so im not being biased, theyre both amazing
I got my Wii U on launch day, and it remains one of my favourite consoles. I don't think a lot of Nintendo's franchises were represented terribly well on Wii, and Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros for Wii U and Breath of the Wild were dramatic improvements beyond their Wii predecessors. Between the quality of their games on Wii U and 3DS, I think Nintendo's development studios made huge strides during the era, and Switch owners are reaping the benefits. The Virtual Console also makes it a really great Nintendo archive, with the Wii Remote support incidentally bringing over native support for the NES and SNES Classic Mini controllers. I'm surprised that the video covered the unique appeal of Splatoon 1 and Smash Bros 4 on the system, but didn't mention Super Mario Maker. The game makes so much more sense with the GamePad's touchscreen, and it's something that really hurt the sequel. I'm such a Wii U apologist, I even like Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival.
I've been thinking about getting a wii u for Xenoblade X but I'm not sure anymore since now you could emulate that game on pc and get higher res but the pc is also expensive so i guess
Ok, i have to stop, you missed the oportunity to say that Wii U is the only console to have this series in HD: - Pushmo - Dr. Mario Wii Party U and Wii Fit U feature some very nice minigames (respectively) for Wii U: - There's one where you grab water from a river in the gamepad with an spoon (wii mote) and have to move it without spilling it onto a jar on the TV, it was pretty fun because you can move the gamepad to a "far" place and make the game a lot harder, insane in multiplayer. - There's a minigame where you play as a maid, the gamepad is your plate that holds cakes and cups, and you have to walk by moving on the Wii Balance Board, so you can give those cakes to the people that are asking for it on the restaurant or whatever... Miyamoto always asked for Tiramisu for some reason...
I love the Wii U, especially because of Star Fox. I love the game and it's controls. I loved Wii U Karaoke, seeing my Mii dancing and singing like a Smurf. It was so much fun to give him a personality like this. I loved the pad, seeing films like Texas Chainsaw or another portable film at a time, the most hadn't touched films outside the big screen. Also a little child can play with it. I liked the era of Mr. Iwata and I'm sorry for the disaster the most didn't know about the existence of the Wii U- till now! Also sorry for Mr. Sakurai. Made one of the best Smash Bros. for nothing. But buying a Wii U in 2021? Of course! But it's better to buy it for the little ones. The pad is not in danger in the hands of a child, the games are perfect and most of it like Yoshi's Wooly World are made with love. The concept is friendly and the the console is - with some forgiveble things- nothing less than the Switch of the past, bounded on it's own station.
I got a Wii U when they offered the Wind Waker HD edition. WW HD was AMAZING, and I loved using the gamepad for a map and inventory control. Nintendo Land was so much fun to play with my non-gamer parents. I still have it hooked up, but the gamepad doesn't even last an hour anymore, it's so annoying.
I loved my Wii U! Sm4sh, Hyrule Warriors, Splatoon, Paper Mario, Botw! I put hundreds of hours into it. There is also Netflix which could be played on either screen. The whole being able to play wind waker on the game pad and still have the TV on is crazy!
Great video. The Wii U was a massively underrated system that only now feels like its starting to become popular as people are starting to know about what's out there for it as well as what it can do. Soft mod it and turn it into a beast with emulation as well as loading Wii and GameCube games off of an external hdd 👌👍
I had the Zombie - U launch console bundle, I did enjoy it and overall I thought this was the best game, that utilise the gamepad; to its full potential. I agree the restrictions in place combined with frantic tension and multitasking made this horror genre worked great!
I got my console on launch day in 2012. I’ve played it regularly ever since and use it as my ‘current’ console. I’m running through a few GBA games on the VC, still play Mario Kart, Splatoon, Black Ops II and Mass Effect 3 online, was still creating and uploading Mario Maker levels until it ceased on 31st March, and I’m also replaying Breath of the Wild on hard mode. The Wii U is a fantastic console which has a decent library of games. I expect I’ll continue to play said games until I finish them and / or the online functions shut down. Best £300 I ever spent.
9:28 I am literally one of those people who never owned a Wii (at the time, I didn't even own a console, only handhelds) and didn't think the WiiU would demand a Wii-mote so much. I had a WiiU, but utterly refused to use or buy Wii-mote. When I couldn't play Metroid Prime Trilogy without a Wii-mote, that was the last straw for me. I loved the BC of GBA and DS and some of the fun WiiU games like Mario Maker, but I traded it back to Gamestop. Even if I had kept it, seeing as my house was broken into in 2018 and I would have lost my WiiU anyway, it's just as well. Now I would like it back just to "save" the VC games that will likely not be easily moved up to Switch (especially the DS games and third party games that haven't been moved up to anything, like Mega Man and Bass or Castlevania: Circle of the Moon and Aria of Sorrow). It's too bad people sell them for $300+ though. Literally Switch prices! I am not doing that just for an emulation machine as much as I would like to support Nintendo and Old games.
Virtual console is a system seller by itself. I sold my Wii U thinking it would be on the Switch but Nintendo will literally use some third party emulator to upscale the resolution of an old game to 720p and 60fps without doing anything to the textures and charge you $60 for it. You literally had a Wii, Wii U, & tons of games from almost every era of Nintendo consoles and third party games on those consoles such as Castlevania. Sadly Nintendo is Nintendo so even if we complained for it back I don't think we would be getting it.
Wii backwards compatibility. Virtual Console. Homebrewing. Three good reasons for having a WiiU. Plus some awesome exclusive experiences: Xenoblade Chronicles X Nintendo Land Paper Mario Color Splash Fatal Frame 5 Mario & Sonic Rio 2016 Affordable Space Adventures And lets not forget Twilight Princess and Wind Waker's HD versions II still play on my WiiU to this day. Specially WiiFitU, since I am in progress of dieting and exercising for losing weight
The backwards wii compatibility + the legacy library on the VC is juuuust enough for me to keep it plugged in. It's pretty much the Zelda/Metroid/F-Zero/Pikmin machine for me.
I’m playing Tokyo Mirage Sessions right now, play MK8 regularly, Fast Racing Neo, and I’ve also soft-modded it to play Gamecube games as well
Yup, thanks to the Wii U I was finally able to experience the entire Metroid collection at a damn bargain

I never knew that, wow, stupid move by Nintendo there.

@@notrenbanney2450 very different besides the turn base part but that's it
X story was meh but gameplay is god tier. It’ll come to the switch.
@@Christian-Ah neither of those games are turn based.

I feel ya, but Netflix is closing like in June😂
The only real "why" is:
It's about $40-50, and it works with Wiimotes.
And Virtual Console stuff.
I miss Virtual console so much...
Right?! Imagine having ds games on switch
@@ultimatebreak827 or if they added GameCube games!
Literally just bought a used Wii U yesterday and now Nintendo Life just uploads this - WTF, Wow!! Synchronicity FTW!
@@rudikmilfajt533 They should continue so that more people get a chance to play its games! Xenoblade X should be on Switch.
Exactly
Reasons to buy a wii U in 2021:
You can pick it up for 1/3 of the switch price and still be able to play mario 3D world, pokken tournament, splatoon, legends of zelda, mario kart 8 and more for wayyy cheap
Only thing switch and wii U both have that is significantly better on switch is super smash bros (ultimate)
For the price of just the switch (£299 on amazon) you can get a wii U (£120 on ebay for a good condition one) and 2-3 amiibo’s and like 6 games
So i think its better to get a wii U if your on a budget but if you want to be able to play newer games then get the switch
I have them both so im not being biased, theyre both amazing
I was looking for one these days, definitely worth it even with all the releases for the Switch
These are the exact reasons I still play the Wii U today.
I've been thinking about getting a wii u for Xenoblade X but I'm not sure anymore since now you could emulate that game on pc and get higher res but the pc is also expensive so i guess
@tiggy wiggo no, at this point you are supporting a random person on eBay. Plus you can also dump a file from disk.
Ok, i have to stop, you missed the oportunity to say that Wii U is the only console to have this series in HD:
- Pushmo
- Dr. Mario
Wii Party U and Wii Fit U feature some very nice minigames (respectively) for Wii U:
- There's one where you grab water from a river in the gamepad with an spoon (wii mote) and have to move it without spilling it onto a jar on the TV, it was pretty fun because you can move the gamepad to a "far" place and make the game a lot harder, insane in multiplayer.
I'm playing now The Last Story and Yoshi's Woolly World, great console.
Yes the Last Story, i enjoyed that, i think it was a wii game? deserves a remaster for the switch at some point.
I'm grateful that the Wii U is still loved by players. I love mine, playing old school games with the pro controller is awesome
New batteries are $27 online, you should scoop a couple up before they are hard to find.
The Wii U was worth it for me since 2012. I wanted one so bad back then, so I was very excited to get mine near Christmas that year!
Took my WiiU on a cross country train trip - 2+ days. Had my WiiU plugged in and played Windwaker HD on the game pad. It's a beautiful system.
The year is 2021 and the Wii U is still a better console than the Nintendo Switch to me.
John, you are a treasure. I hereby claim this is the definitive Wii U buyers' guide in 2021 and beyond.
Xenoblade X thats enough
Zombi u used so well the gamepad
Just realized this is a reupload
I am not doing that just for an emulation machine as much as I would like to support Nintendo and Old games.
i prefer splatoon 1 over 2 and still play it today, wii u overall is just a great system too
+Shiina
My people! I have found my people! 🥲
Wii u is still the best way to play wind waker, and i liked starfox zero. Other than that....uhhh no reasons lol
Wii backwards compatibility.
Virtual Console.
Homebrewing.
Three good reasons for having a WiiU. Plus some awesome exclusive experiences:
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Nintendo Land
Paper Mario Color Splash
Fatal Frame 5
Mario & Sonic Rio 2016
Affordable Space Adventures
And lets not forget Twilight Princess and Wind Waker's HD versions
II still play on my WiiU to this day. Specially WiiFitU, since I am in progress of dieting and exercising for losing weight
