- The 2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid LE AWD ($29,379 as specced in Canada, $25,545 as specced in the US) is an affordable and fuel efficient option with little competition near its price in Canada. Powered by a 1.8L 4-cylinder engine and two electric motors, the AWD Corolla Hybrid is capable of 134 horsepower and has a claimed economy of 5.9 L/100 km (48 mpg) combined. Does this affordable little hybrid Toyota have any major faults that might take away from its attractive price, practicality, and fuel efficiency? Thomas and James investigate. Potentially the most boring car in the world, and yet it's so important to so many and supremely well executed. As a result it's tremendous.
Far from it. At least the hybrid gives it some character. I can easily name other boring cars made by shit car manufactures
@@yay842I can’t name a more boring car that you can buy brand new other than the Corolla. It’s still a good choice though especially since it’s guaranteed to outlive it’s competitors.
@@BoldBrandFlakes so boring yet so… important.
The civic is less boring but you know what? I'd have the Toyota any day.
Though being in Australia, I'd go for the Camry. Bit bigger, bit more competent in all areas, vaguely the same price and spec for the money and looks pretty spiffy imo.

How is car
@TwinTurbo Ray its from top gear, whenever they drive a boring front wheel drive hatchback
Why is car
The fact that you chose to review a base model vehicle makes me happy. While exotic and high powered expensive cars are fun to watch, most of us can't afford to own them. Please keep including cars that real people can actually afford in your reviews. We need your level of expertise to help us make the right choices. You two have really built the best channel out here. Thank you.
This isn't a base model it's a Hybrid. It's an expensive pos
@@TheBasher-_-its 24k, that about as cheap as you can get a new car these days😂
I actually want them to review a shopping cart for me.
In the long run, with gas savings and low maintenance, reliability... It's probably the least expensive car you can buy. @@TheBasher-_-
It’s AWD. That’s not base
Ah yes - this right here is why you guys are SO good at reviews; instead of crapping all over the car for not having a 500 hp engine, leather interior and handling like a 911, you applaud the car for what it's MEANT to be. That's awfully bad about dealers though - yet given how slimy many are, not hard to imagine them doing that.
exactly. i didnt continue watching a channel just because they're giving the stick to an everyday car for not being exciting going round a corner.
Exactly, not wasting 10 min about exhaust pops and satellite radio. 😉
@@fist003 the Corolla should have a stick tho😢
@@imnotusingmyrealname4566 no. no it shouldn’t
@@payasofeo69I know! Who the f cares so much about rewinding satellite radio.
Dealerships have really ruined it for buyers with their mark ups, but the manufacturers also don’t make enough of certain cars, resulting in prices sky rocketing like the GR Corolla / Type R, where they were marketed as affordable performance cars, but are all marked way over msrp
100% correct! I’ve been trying to buy a 2023 Corolla Hybrid and dealers are adding $5k of “add-ons”, it’s ridiculous! A connectivity kit is $75! It’s just a $5 freaking USB cord!
@@Chiklet42 no sir, its 3 usb cords
Dealerships are the modern crooks alongside realtors
@@EricBoxers eh, realtors actually do things the internet cant though, walk you through places, even prep them for showing. they have a legit purpose unlike dealerships when it could just be showrooms with way less people and a few models for test drives.
@@bradhaines3142 have you seen the virtual walk thru that some agencies do? It's awesome. You could technically buy a house just with that but obviously sending an inspector in for you.
You guys nailed the value proposition of the Corolla Hybrid. I own 3 of them for my driving school business. I bought the first in 2020 (now has over 100K trouble-free miles), and another in 2022 and one more this January. They are the perfect mix of “normal” for teaching new drivers, excellent mpg with a transparent hybrid system, spacious enough, and should be as reliable as a legacy Prius that donated its powertrain. I’ve owned several makes of cars in my 10-car fleet, and the Corolla Hybrids are the best.
Now, on weekends when I want to have fun, I have an M2 6-spd like Thomas’, but the “boring” cars pay for the BMW. Sensible cars have their place!
Is your driving school final exam a trip to the Nurburgring like the old days? Probably better in the M2.
Totally. Having a beater allows you to withstand the pains of having a fun car 😂😂😂 your mind needs the days off
@@kenimno pains of having a fun car. Just usually don’t wanna get it door dinged up by careless Karen’s in parking lots or put lots of miles on em lol. That’s where the beaters come in 😂
My kind of driving teacher.
This is the automotive equivalent to a yawn. It's so incredibly boring, but everything is so "fine" that it's the perfect recommendation to anybody who needs a car in a place where it snows
Which is basically 99% of people. That's why Toyota sells so many of the damn things
@@brownhairydog6472 erm.... no. it would be like 20% of people. Most people are around the equator where it never snows.
If this is incredibly boring then so are vast majority of cuvs, trucks, vans etc.
Or if you need a car to pile on the mileage and know will be built out of basically Indestructabilium (TM), here's something that should keep the mechanic at bay for everything but basic maintenance.
@@janoycresnova9156 this is a whole different level of boring though. Most companies either try to make their cars overly faux aggressive or give them gimmicks and useless features nobody actually cares about. Toyota on the other hand, does none of that. It's just a car, it goes where you want it to go, and does it perfectly reliably, in relative comfort and with no frills
This car deserved a track review
Lap times vs 911 GT3 for sure.
For the science, and for the lulz. (truly I would be curious though)
Get a set of cup 2r's and let's see a lap time
Just shift to the B gear, the enhanced braking power of this car will help with lap times albeit suspension is built for comfort (not too soft or not too firm), it rides surprisingly well (almost like a Lexus) but bodyroll is not too confidence inspiring.
@@Trendyfluteit would be funny
10:21 magnificent speech Thomas. Awesome job and amazing job James love you both
when a Canadian gets mad you know its wrong
I was going to make a similar comment. It’s out of hand. I don’t know if his speech will make a difference but it is appreciated.
I really wish they had a podcast for more of that. Might also be nice for them to have an excuse to stay home for a while and earn income instead of dashing between Canadia and California constantly!
Only Throttle House can make me click and/or watch a Corolla video
I love that you didn't trash this car!
I would also love to see a corolla/mazda3/forte5 track battle! don't even pick a winner, just enjoy the meatloaf.
I used to own a 2019 Mazda 3, and that car was a lot of fun to drive.
As they said, it’s kind of hard to do that.
You hear the words "Toyota Corolla" and you just know everything's gonna be fine.
That's such a TH opening bit, "all I'm asking you to do is to hold me in your arms and say 'Toyota Corolla.' "
I appreciate your rants on dealer markups. Mini ended up being my first choice in my search for a car last fall because of the markup practices by Mazda (3 HBs), VW (new and used GTIs), Chevy (Bolts), Hyundai (Kona EVs) etc, as well as my local Acura dealer refusing to let me test drive new Integras on the highway.
Just curious, would you say that their reliability has gotten any better or has it been relatively the same?
@@faheemabbas3965 I'm only a few months in so I can't say. A few friends of mine have them and love them. The servicing costs can be high (because BMW dealers)
@@ericsolovyev8535 That's just bad dealership practice. The only question we got from the acura dealer when we tried to test drive an integra is whether we can drive a manual. Other than that, zero question.
@jkliao648 as per the rep "I just want you to see how great of a commuter it is"
I love that you guys called out the dealers marking up cars. Especially the ones doing it to daily drivers. More car reviewers should do that, call them evil for making new cars unaffordable for working class people. A lot of times people review cars and talk about the price, but totally ignore that we will never see those msrps.
I can’t tell this apart from an RS3
You know, people say that Corollas can’t have soul. Drive one of these for a week and I swear that you will fall in love with its simplicity. They have a soul and a good one at that.
I have a 2003 Corolla and can confirm, it is without a doubt one of the cars of all time.
I have an 05 Yaris Verso minivan and it's just perfect
Yours is just at the edge of what is considered, "Toyotas golden age" where reliability surpasses the modern adaptation of... Modern tech stuff, and it will probably go another 20 years (as long as it's not driven crazily hard) with basic maintenance and occasional replacement of stuff that other cars would usually have replaced 10 years ago.
My family had an 03, black S with a manual transmission, we sold it for 500 bucks with 270,000 miles on it, still miss that car
Couldn't agree more, one the most boring cars of all time
@@Kataru. 500? mine costed around 5k when there were not cars at dealeships. I still decided to keep it
You don't need a truck or an SUV. You need a Corolla.
I'm sayin, too many people get something way too much for wut they need
i actually need the room of an suv for work
What about the need of self compensation? You gotta let people know that you have a truck (that never does truck things) what if I need to tow a boat (that doesn't exist) what if relatives visit.. like once a year.
Sure, let's see this in an 18" snow drift on country roads.
@@67FORDTRUCKF250 id love to see some tool boxes stuffed in there along with a few weeks worth of clothes
It looks like a 30k car but suits James perfectly, lol
Such a James car
I have rented one. It's a great little car. In a way it's very exciting. I was trying to use as little throttle as possible to keep up with traffic without using the gas engine and that was super exciting. Who knew hypermiling can be this fun. The power and CVT is well calibrated for highway driving if you can ignore the screaming from the engine. It even has very good adaptive cruise control for stop and go traffic stuff. I was able to get 52mpg where my 2021 Passport would only get 24mpg on the same stretch of road.
Ahaha right! It's like playing those games where you have to get the car the farthest you can go in one attempt
It's a different type of driving experience. Instead of going 0-60 as fast as you can, you focus on gerring from A to B as economically as possible.
I did that in a rented Prius too ! Its so addicting
I hypermilled a 2020 Kia Forte GT and got 46 mpg over 170 miles. With a turbocharged 1.6L. It surprised the hell out of me.
Sounds riveting
cannot wait until all brands just skip dealerships entirely and sell cars online the way Tesla is doing. Absolutely hate everything about car salespeople, they are grimmy and will take advantage of anyone they can
Dealerships business models should be phased out. They no longer serve their purpose.
Put the hybrid system and AWD into the Corolla hatchback and that would be the most sensible car in the world.
It will outsell all other hatchbacks, by far.
Pfft, why stop there. Let’s go crazy, do the hybrid awd in a full-blown corrola wagon. I dare them.
@@LD-mo6xw They exist! In other countries, unfortunately. Corolla GR touring I believe. Would love to have one in NA
@@TrailCaleb Looks like a European model. Toyotas are boring as it gets but as a 1 car household, that might be the perfect car for us.
@@LD-mo6xw a Camry wagon would be amazing
Your point about the dealers giving the cars to sales reps for a weekend so they can sell them as pre owned is so important. People don't realize that dealerships are doing that. It's insane seeing Corolla's and Camry's pushing $50 - $60k respectively just because of availability and wait times.
eat the dealers!
I just bought a Camry Hybrid XSE for MSRP. There are dealerships that will put you on a list and you buy at MSRP when it's your turn. Don't give business to the shitty dealers if you don't have to.
@@aluisious that was never the issue, all dealerships have to sell it to you at MSRP in Canada. But the way they get around it is the dealerships bring in a certain amount of orders for customers and a certain amount that they use as “demos” or “test cars” and they give them to a sales rep for a weekend and put 200-500km on it and then sell it for an insane markup. This is how they get away with it. Because the car is technically “used” now. And they continue to get away with it because the dealership will quote you a 3-12 month wait on the model you’re interested in and all they have to do is get you the car in that time frame and they have met their obligations. In the meantime however, they can bring in the exact car you ordered and use it as a demo and then mark it up for some sucker who can’t wait that long and will pay top dollar for it.
@@aluisious The waitlist for a prius was 2 years last I checked
That e-CVT is a thing of beauty. Base hybrid Toyota's are the best value out there if you're looking for an appliance you'll keep for a long time. The lane centering assist on highway is actually pretty damn decent and included in base models.
The eCVT is a planetary gear set, there is no such thing as a CVT in any Toyota hybrid, that's one of the reasons of why they are so reliable, the transmission is a few gears that connect the 2 electric motors with the ICE, gears can last so long it's ridiculous.
@@hedgehogthesonic3181 Exactly! So few parts, just a couple of big gears that do sooooo much work. It's like one of those physics equations that end up so simple you're just in awe of much work they can achieve while still being this simple.
@@hedgehogthesonic3181 no clutches, no brakes, very few small parts that can fail.
@@flipper2gv I have seen Prius C with over 200,000 miles with the original transaxle fluid, most Priuses with high mileage never had the fluid changed, since the transaxle is so simple the fluid is not in much stress other than lubricathing the gears and cooling the 2 electric motors.
@@zachary3777 Indeed.
“You tell them to sniff it.”
I drive the base model AWD Sienna hybrid. Also awesome. Think of it as a Corolla Pro Max. That small AWD motor in the back is a killer feature, not because it occasionally provides AWD service, but because it provides additional regenerative braking on every coast and brake. I think thats why the AWD is standard on these hybrid corollas. It does way more for fuel economy than it does for traction/safety.
I think you could do a mini series of reviews where you review just the base trims of cars like this one, I’ve seen some people say the cross trek and the new Impreza, and so on. Would be very interesting to see how much car you’re really getting for all that money.
The child is grown
The dream is gone
I have become comfortably numb
Such an amazingly boring and average car, and I have loved every corolla I have owned because it serves its purpose as a daily better than anything else I could get for the money. I was just looking at the new hybrid for my wife yesterday.
I agree wholeheartedly there are no cheap cars. We suffer the same price markups here in Australia. Disgusting. Thanks for the great review
Era of cheap, affordable cars in EU or US is gone. Until the chinese start to export their models, a new saloon ride, will be a dream for 3/4 of the population
Picked up a Corolla Hybrid SE AWD this past February in the States for MSRP, but it took some shopping around. $2-5k markups everywhere. Wish heated seats came standard down here but still a great little car. Like y'all said, it's just easy.
Where? Which dealer? I need a Corolla for my son.
Same I visited two dealerships and the first one marked up the car by $3,000 while the second I visited actually went for the MSRP instead.
I bought a 2015 Corolla S several years ago because I just needed something easy. I'm glad that I went for the S for the sense that this is a *nice* place to be vs. a place I *have* to be and am glad I did, though I'm sure the base features now cover most of the bases from years past. I have averaged just over 40mpg lifetime and it's even decently easy to work on. No complaints.
When the Corolla S first came out I was thinking that's it my first new car, It never happened tho, Im too cheep and got a2010 lancer es :O
Excellent review. That part about the dealers in Canada is spot on. They will take advantage of whatever loophole they can find to mark these cars up.
Rubber tax! And you have 4 tires so that'll be 4x
Thank you come again
I helped my Daughter out getting a new 2022 Corolla LE last May.
She thought she only could afford a used car however, I said she would be better off with a new car.
Since used car prices were so out of touch last year getting a new car made a lot more sense.
$22K and change for a Corolla is a fair deal. We paid MRSP too. Only waited a month for it to come in.
(Plus we got it before the loan rates went up, up, up)
It has NO option packages on it but even as a gas only car it still gets up to 38mpg.
You cannot beat that and I told her to make sure she does the preventive maintenance on it and it should last her 15 years or so.
Wow! Where are you situated? I’ll go buy a Corolla from your dealer!
One of my favorite cars. I really think the Corolla is a great car. I just love the solidity, ride and general feel of it. This is the base model and it delivers. Sorry about the dealers but you gave them an appropriate message.
Toyota is in a league of their own right now! They have like 7 vehicles that I think I need or want or could fit into my lifestyle... simultaneously.
They just need a Ford Maverick competitor.
Small pickup that gets good fuel economy, has a bed big enough for the occasional things you wanna carry but don’t want inside your car (gas, dirt, tools, etc.), and still has 4 doors for carrying people (which most pickup owners do far more than carry stuff in the bed).
Supposedly it’s in the works as the Stout, but only time will tell.
@@Quesadila21 they have that scout thing coming out soon don't they?
Thank you for that review! This is unexpected, very Strange nowadays to find reliable simple cars, without any bells and whisles and without breaking the bank. Forget about those shitty turn off dealers that selling used cars more than the price for new ones. Report them!!!
Certainly one of the cars of all times. My dad has one (but the 1.6L petrol) and it’s just car, the appliance. It’s just nice, but nothing to get excited about, while still being good to drive.
you made an entertaining video about the most boring car in the world. It's great. Also, thanks for calling out the snakes at the dealerships.
James and Thomas, I love your fair assessment of the new Corolla and also the rant about the unscrupulous practices of the dealers in Canada. At todays prices especially, anyone who marks up a car above its MSRP should have to smell a bowl of farts everyday for the rest of their life. 😂
This was the top of our list, & like you said the dealers made it way too expensive with their markups.
I ended up with a one owner 46k mile 2010 Camaro instead, since the Chevy dealer happily sold it to us with a 4 year bumper to bumper warranty, 2 years of complimentary maintenance, & brand new tires for under $14k.
OMG THANK YOU for saying what you guys said at the end! The car market in Canada is crazy, I am priced out from even buying a damn corolla! 38 to 40k for a corolla is just criminal. Please make a dedicated video on your thoughts about the used / new car market prices, its much needed and more so than ever we need your opinions on the matter. Us regular folk work hard and don’t deserve to be priced out of a basic commuter car. 10/10 video btw as always you guys are awesome! 🎉
Love the car and the price, unfortunately it will be a 35k car in the US with the dealer markups
That is correct. I’ve walked out of 3 Toyota dealerships due to ridiculous add ons and mark ups.
A SF bay are dealer here is selling it at $27K, that includes $2.2k of add ons, OTD is $30K.
There’s a reason they’ve sold nearly 50 Million corollas worldwide
I don’t drive enough to need a hybrid so I got the gas LE and absolutely love it. Utilitarian, simple, perfect.
Well done. Thank you for calling out the dealers 🙏🏻
This seems like an equivalence to how James May describes a Dacia Sandero, the essence of a car.
I have NEVER understood why somebody would want larger wheels.. they cost more initially, and to replace the rubber cost more.. plus, less sidewall and rougher ride. Give me 15 or 16" wheels and I'll be happy.
also bigger wheels less rubber between the road and the rim so youll bend it if you hit a big pothole and you can also burst your expensive tire :(
Honestly wasn't that long ago when 16" tires were considered large.
Only for looks. I know that these 15s are better in every way to the 16s, but I want the 16s because they don’t ruin it, while looking much better.
Couple of reasons looks cool, better grip around corners because the tires get wider. It’s for performance, mainly if you aren’t into it and like fuel economy get 10 inch wheels with tires that have no stopping power etc.
Wheels are getting bigger because brakes are getting bigger as a result of bigger and heavier cars these days. My Kia Stinger can’t fit any wheels smaller than 18” because of the big Brembo brake rotors and calipers.
WARNING: Never car shop when you're desperate, and never pay over MSRP for any car. If a dealer tries to charge you beyond that for any reasons, walk.
Bought one of these for my wife, she loves it. She just wanted a reliable car that is easy to use and get's good fuel mileage. Here in Seattle we were on a 7 month waiting list with one of the few dealers that doesn't markup cars. Most dealers markup at least 10%, or at least did when we ordered it.
…and, you’re still married?! Woohoo!!
That’s awesome! I luckily found a good dealership that sold for MSRP and was honest about the wait time after checking the first one dealership where they marked up the car and lied about the wait time.
Looked at one of these at our local Toyota dealer (Langley Toyota) and they broke out the book of "Everything Dealers do to Screw Customers." Wouldn't accept a cash purchase (make more money from financing), insisted we had to buy a $600 remote "insurance" package, so if we lost our remote, they'd replace it for "free," inflated "documents" charges, etc. Sleaze from top to bottom.
Do dealers think there are going to be car shortages forever and that we won't remember who tried to screw us over when they had the advantage?
Toyota keeps the "car recommendation for people who don't like cars" crown.
The truth about cars. Toyota Corolla - actually the greatest car EVER made.
I recommend the hell out of these, I liked driving the loaner I had, in a more sensible world millions more of these would be sold and GM and Ford would make competitors to it. But people need Explorers and Silverados because they have a child and it snows sometimes.
…and they want to feel “safer” with all the other oversized vehicles on the road, don’t forget!
They definitely waited to throw this episode out there. Note their clothes and snow on the ground.
As far as the car is concerned, if you need to get from A to B it’s hard to find better.
You guys nailed the review. There is no point to bash the Corolla. It is a driving appliance, and works when you need it to go somewhere.
Purchased a Matrix after college, still own it today as my 2nd car. It just never dies.
I bought the 2021 version of this car, I.E, no all wheel drive and no heated steering wheel. Honestly, it is a fanstatic car. I average about 4.2-4.5l/100 Km per tank of gas in the summer, even with my slightly heavy foot. The best I've done is 3.9l/100 km on a drive from Sarnia, ON to Ottawa ON which is about 700 km and i didnt stop for up until I actually reached Ottawa. The entire drive was incredibly relaxing thanks to the seats, the radar cruise and lane keep. I put some decent tires on for the winters here in Ottawa, and it did incredible too, averaging about 5.5-6L /100 KM per tank of gas with the heat on and everything. I do want to buy a second 'fun' car for the summers sometime soon, but for work, my side gig and for trips with my friends, this truly is car, and i wouldn't have it any other way.
It's not boring, it's perfect.
The Miller Lite of cars, it's cold, it's wet, and it serves it's purpose. If only you could get 30 of them for $20
watching you roasting the dealers is just something else😂😂
carry on TH❤🔥
On dealers - there's a few 'used' GR Corolla's around me at Toyota dealerships, with less than 500 miles on them, marked 10-15k over msrp... It's super annoying.
Toyota Sales Rep here, EV mode is a useless button! To this day I don't know why we include it, you cant use it unless you're like stuck in 10mph traffic and even then the car is going to put itself in EV anyway.
Haha, I am a Toyota sales rep as well & I tell everyone that asks about that button the same exact thing! In fact I sold a new Rav4 Hybrid this afternoon & used that word track.

The whole point of this video is not about how good or bad of this Corolla. They are mainly to tell you (us) the how current Canadian TOYOTA dealerships are doing tricks to go around the CANADIAN LAW to jack up the car prices.
It doesn't matter how good or how reliable of this Corolla. It is NOT WORTH to pay $10k over MSRP for one.
The Corolla still excels at what it’s good at. And I’m pretty damn sure that the Corolla sedan still continues to outsell the Corolla crossover or whatever that thing is because it’s still very appealing for the price, it’s fuel efficiency and it’s simplicity.
I wal looking at the corolla cross, but its back seats have less leg room and the truck space is of much less area. The whole corolla cross is shorter than the regular corolla
I'm getting more upset with Toyota as time goes on. As other car makers have made great progress in settling down and fixing their supply chain problems Toyota is still having problems getting cars to dealerships. Some dealerships in my area have only one or two GAS Corollas and ZERO hybrid models. And according to various websites the wait for a hybrid is 1 1/2 years. Completely unacceptable and I have started to look at Mazda or Honda.
At least on the east coast US, you can get a hybrid corolla within a couple weeks if willing to pay ~$1-2k markup. I'm not willing to pay that so have been on a wait list for MSRP. I'm next up so total wait will be about 3 months.
This is a car of all time
I own this car. I love it. It may be just a car, but it’s the most car you will ever get for this price. 56mpg average is what I get.
That’s killer mileage and with gas going up, you are ahead of the masses. Very smart.
I’d take this over any other make or model. Reliable A F
The question is... why buy this car in the US if the price of a Prius Prime is lower once you take into account the federal credits?
And even so... $24k befopre adding options... seems to me quite steep.
What happened in the last 10 years that now people are willing to pay so much for cars in the US, while prices for cars outside of the North American market keep dropping? It just blows my mind that anyone can think of $24K as cheap, and $40-50k as normal.
I walked out of a Toyota dealership trying to buy a Corolla. Ended up with an Impreza. 25mpg but better AWD.
I’ve driven the new Prius, and the visibility was horrible to drive in Japanese cities
The new Corolla was a perfect one for it.
They need to make this configuration available as a hatch
its crazy how a brand new base sedan now STARTS at 30K, up from the 17 k or 19k in 2015. which i get it (inflection, bad economy, covid) but its crazy to me that its increased, what 11k in 7 years, not 10 not 15, but 7. I'm 17 right now in 5 years time when I'm finished uni, hopefully, what am i going to be looking at a 35k base sedan. And you know that there's going to be like 3 car brands that make sedans and there all going to be bad but what choice am i going to have. it feel like I'm going to be homeless with no car before my life even starts. I apologize for the rant, its just, it feels bad watching all of this happen.
James emotions were so spot on. He literally cared for the viewers and people who buy these cars.
Thank you for calling out Canadian toyota dealerships.
This is without question one of the cars of all time.
I live in CA, specifically in the Bay Area. Never will I buy a Toyota here. I went to a dealer to look at the new Corolla Cross and Rav4. Sales guy told me all their inventory had mark ups of a few thousand. All hybrid models had a markup close to $10,000. Not only the Prius, but even Corolla and Camry hybrids. Never went to look at Toyota again.
I've worked in the auto industry for 10 years, and despite all this I bought myself the most car "car", a 2023 Corolla Hybrid SE AWD.
In that time I've come to realize how expensive cars are to maintain over a lengthened ownership period. I very nearly went for a new Golf R but decided I wanted a purely economical vehicle. Low cost of ownership, economical, and importantly AWD (live in Alberta).
I was then mostly looking at an Impreza, but caught wind of the 2023 Hybrid AWD on press release. I placed an order before I could even officially do so. At the time lightly used cars made little sense because prices were so inflated. I was able to get my Corolla at MSRP.
I did splurge for some creature comforts. As this is my daily A to B and I want to keep it for a long time I think it was worth it for the SE trim, I would strongly recommend NOT going for the XSE, you only get leather and 10 years of Navigation subscription, which is negated with wireless CarPlay and Android Auto.
Not all upgrades were mentioned in this review. Over the LE you get upgraded exterior styling, much nicer 18" alloys, wireless charging, and 5-years of remote connect (very nice for winter), along with the mentioned upgraded interior package and seats, dual exhaust, and sunroof.
Since I got my car in early March I have been very happy. I'm averaging 5.0L/100km and it does exactly what I wanted and need it to do. It's just reliable and economical.
I can highly recommend "The most sensible car in the world"!
I have the 2023 corolla hb. I’m averaging 6.3 l/100. Do you think the switch is worth it from gas to hybrid for 1.3 l difference. I was in the impression hybrid do better than 5L/100km.
@tolgadag3637 If you have a 2023 already I wouldn't bother going for the hybrid. Your car is still very economical overall. Personally, the biggest consideration for me was the AWD.
3/4 of my daily commute is highway though, highway estimated average is 5.3L/100km so I'm doing quite well.
@@tolgadag3637 I have the same model and colour as the one they reviewed 2023 Corolla Hybrid Le i am getting 4.9 L /100 I am in Ontario got the car in late March 2023 i do mostly city driving
@@pawel115 awd ?
Thank you for throwing some shame at these sleaze bag dealers. Marking up a Z06 Corvette is one thing. It’s still a greedy dirty move but nobody NEEDS a Corvette. Corollas and the like are cars people need to live. Get to work, drop off and pick up kids, go grocery shopping etc. The fact that dealers are raking people over the coals on these cars is infuriating.
Yes, there are cheaper cars than this but there's a reason why no one trusts Kia and Hyundai but every one trusts Toyota 🧐 So to me, this is the BARE MINIMUM I am willing to accept from a car 😂 It just works fine and it doesn't do thibgs wrong
I don't trust Toyota.
@@paulklp8262 well Toyota owns part of Mazda soooo there’s that lol
You had a joke that Audis are "car" but I think the Corolla is "car". It's so fucking generic but in the best way possible. Every time I've gotten one as a rental, I've come out of it thinking that I'd happily own one if I needed a super cheap econo-box that wasn't electric. The fact that there's a decent hybrid one now is just icing on the cake. If they ever manage to make an EV version that feels as uncompromised for the price (think Toyota version of the Bolt), they will sell a jillion of them.
This is what should be going on your main channel. Not high end luxury/exotic cars you've been falling in love lately.
Gentlemen, What a small world, I just had meatloaf for supper. If Toyota would just give Canadians the Corolla Hybrid wagon we crave, that would be like meatloaf with homemade gravy. 😁
I just checked Toyota's website and, it should be noted, that in the U.S. you *have* to get the SE trim in order to get the on-demand AWD, otherwise you just get FWD.
It's also in the hybrid LE, just not the hybrid XLE
i believe we dont have non-AWD hybrid Corolla's for sale here in Canada, even the LE trim is AWD. The non-hybrid Corollas are FWD however.
You should point out that the eCVT is vastly different than a standard CVT. An eCVT is very durable unlike a CVT made up of steel belts assembled with hundreds if not thousands of little plates that will eventually explode making an unrepairable mess.
I had a 2020 Corolla as a long term rental last year. My consensus was it's a perfectly adequate car. That's it. The CVT with the clutch pack first gear was... Not great. It wasn't very quick. But it was perfectly happy with the cheapest crap gas I could feed it. Decent economy too while treating the throttle like a light switch here in NYC. The audio system was terrible. But it did have a ton of features. Even though it had steel wheels and wheel covers. Active radar cruise control / Lane keep assist / all that stuff which I found strange in that price category. It was an car.
The government is not stopping inflation on purpose, and it is getting harder for Americans to pay the bills. These cars are still cheaper than massive SUV and truck. Your going to see a massive movement to small cars like the 70's when gas prices got out control. These are cheap to maintain and operate than a SUV or truck which will cost your Thousands of dollars. Corolla is meant for cost savings, and they are economical when people are living bills to bills.
Yes these cars are boring but they are TOTALLY necessary!!! These are the loaners, the fleet cars, the starter cars, the everyday cars, which end up being the cars that last almost literally forever!!!! No it’s not special but it’s the one that sits in the yard and waits for the others to break down and you come right back to it, or gets you from A to B during the week and rests while you muck about on the weekend. In that aspect they are excellent. And like I say…..totally necessary
I will donate as many farts as it takes to stop dealership price gouging. I am willing to do this selfless act because I care.

Toyota dealerships are the worst. Everything is 10 to 20 grand more than MSRP or you can wait 6 years.
Simple is good... Corolla is good and speed limit of lambo & Corolla will be same on the highway... So no competition to Toyota Corolla...
people that buy these over a WRX just boggles my mind. Have fun with your life. jeeze
15" alloys!? Wow, that means there's tyre sidewall. That can only be good for ride.
Why there is a limited supply of Toyota cars? Is Toyota helping it's dealers to make money at the expense of customers?
Do the Corolla Cross hybrid AWD next.
it seems toyota has picked up the mantle of "an car" from the golf, and the beetle before it
can you build something like that in Canada? and sell it to entire world? better to be slow down of making fun out of good deal good car reliable and best fuel economic. even brits can not build anything like it.
