Vanitas is not a vampire but a human who inhereted the power of a vampire born from the blue moon. Usually vampires are born under the red moon and the vampires that are born under the blue moon are rare they are hated or people call them cursed. So in the Legend the vampire of the blue moon was hated to the point of death, but he escaped and before his death he created a grimore with the purpose of killing all of the vampires of the red moon and inhereting the power of the blue vampire to whoever gets the book. So because Vanitas now has the book, he inhereted the power, but the purpose of the book is to kill that vampires of the red moonbut because he's a doctor /human he wants to save the vampires from extinction. Another reason why he was also hated was because there was a curse in which people thought it was caused by the blue vampire but it was not.... It was caused by something else(if you wanna know."WATCH IT") but because Vanitas is a doctor he uses the power of the blue moon vampire to cure them but people refuse to admit that he's a good person. OK that's enough spoilers but. One. Last. One.......... He falls in love with a vampire name Jeanne also called a witch of hell or in Spanish(Bruja del infierno) :D
