"A guy named Ramsey"? You mean SIR ALF RAMSEY, the Manager of the 1966 England World Cup Winning Team! - BTW In the UK we pretty much have to hear about this match every World Cup since 1990 - It's not forgotten! The papers dredge it up again and again!
They created a movie called The Game of Their Lives about this match. As a kid from The Hill neighborhood in St. Louis, where multiple players on this team were from, i grew up hearing the legend of this team. Thanks for sharing it with everyone Z!
Those early wprld cups have sone wild stories Like the argentine player who lost to Uruguay in 1930 And then won the world cup in 1934 with Italy Making him the only player to play multiple finals for different countries
Growing up and playing in St. Louis every coach that I had told us about this game. My dad and his brothers met Harry Keough and a few of the other St. Louis based players in the years after the tournament. It’s a great story that more people definitely should hear about.
1930 world cup was also amazing. My former country, Yugoslavia, managed to win their group, but the succumb to the hosts Uruguay because of the referee decisions and scare from the fans. A great movie was made about it "Montevideo, see you"
Speaking of US soccer teams at the world cup, do you know Willie McLean? He played for the U.S. at the 1934 World Cup, and disappeared without a trace in 1938. It wasn't until 2022 that researchers uncovered what had happened to him, and where he had been until his death in 1977. Such a wild story!
The level of disbelief in England upon hearing of this result was so great, commentators were demanding confirmation that the actual score was 10-1 to England!
Known about this game since I was a little kid. It was featured on a History of World Soccer (yes, Soccer) VHS tape that Smiths Crisps gave away. Narrated by an incredibly wooden Bryan Robson! I watched that thing about 150 times.
this game is not that obscure, they literally made a movie about it. I'm not from America (nor UK) but I have been informed about both the movie and the game. edit: I feel an urge to clarify that the West Indies v. England game was one of test cricket as I don't hear Zealand mentioning it
My first exposure to this story was the feature/sketch about it on Baddiel and Skinner's Fantasy Football in 2004. I remember they talked to one of the players and recreated the goal.
I live in Belo Horizonte, the city where that match was played, been at that stadium a few times, it's pretty cool. Ngl it was kinda funny when I learned about this match. Not so fun fact (for me) it was the same city where the 7-1 happened in 2014. Also, as a shoutout to your previous videos, this city is also the home team of cruzeiro who played racing in the match where that guy took a skull to the match, and also the home of atletico mineiro, the team which the supporters hurt a photographer with a firework.
The upset that occurred in 1950 was in the Final round robin when the home team lost to Uruguay 2-1. It was the only time Pele saw his father cry. It showed that the 2014 World Cup wasn't a surprise, when the Germans defeated Brazil 7-1. Also, thanks to the Cold War, Yugoslavia was the only Eastern European to compete. I think it's the only World Cup that India qualified for. They withdrew. No one from Asia or Africa participated. There were four groups, with 13 countries participating. The US finished fourth in their group. Yes, they beat England, and scored in the first half, but they lost their other two matches, while Spain went undefeated, beating England by an identical 1-0 score. In the final round robin, Spain got only one point, a 2-2 draw against Uruguay, with big losses against Sweden and Brazil. In the group stage, England scored 2 and allowed 2. Not impressive for an early favourite in a tournament. The US scored 4 and allowed 8.
This is a very well known piece of football history here in the UK. A bit of an embarrassment for English fans, and a good laugh for us Scots 😉. I would argue though, that North Korea's 1-0 win over Italy in 1966 was just as much of an upset.
I do find it interesting that the FIFA acceptance of professionalism preceeds the IOC by nearly 4 decades by which point FIFA is so dominant it can demand the weird U23 compromise that runs Olympic football. But I remember discussion of this defeat in English Media when the USA national Team returned at Italia '90.
I dont know if this is true, but i've heard that when journalists in the US got the news of the result, they figured there was a 1 missing in the score, and england had actualy won 10-1
The rugby system is unique in the way that we have a world cup every 4 years, but between that teams play each other in test matches. One offs or a series of 1-3 games travelling to the cointry you are olaying against. Although there are yearly competitions that are divide the northern and southern hemisphere into the The rugby challenge (South) and the 6 Nations (South) these competitions are league competitions without playoffs where each team plays eachother twice. Home and away for the 6 Nations and The Rugby championship for complicated reasons does not do this. Not a circus act or comparable to WWE. It’s the best and most brutal sporting spectacle in the world, think more galdiators in the coloseum and less grown men in costumes. The sport as a whole has alot of tactics and is really thrilling at the highest level. Hope this helps 🫶🏻
Zealand talking about immigrants intentionally not teaching their children the old ways at 7:45 is still a feeling among some. My father never taught me Spanish, didn't celebrate any Mexican holidays, or share any significant Mexicans in history growing up. All my cousins know, but I'm having to learn just like anyone else in the US...
Actually, it's kind of a part of our brasilian culture. We tend to root for the underdogs. So, when people knew it wasn't a boring match and the terrible US team was pulling an upset, they went crazy.
im a 40 year old englishman from the northwest. as a kid we loved the game "sensible world of soccer" or swos. it was the first great football computer game. then it was overtaken by "international superstar soccer" or ISS. this game is a classic and changed its name alot. today its called "pro evo soccer" or Pes. also as a kid i read world soccer magazing which is still the worlds best football magazine. its almost 100 years old and started in london in the 1930s. we would also read "soccer stars" magazine which was alot more for kids and had pull out posters and such. also as a kid i bought "micheal owens soccer skills" video, which was great. along with games and magazines and videos, many many other shows on tv and radio and newspaper sections refered to the sport of football as soccer. to this day the number one watched football related show in britian is "soccer saturday" which has been playing every week for 30 years. it is for these reasons that as children on the playgrounds in england we would often call the sport soccer. "is tom coming out to play soccer miss fawson?" "you playing soccer on sunday?" etc etc. the use of the word wasnt uncommon. after all the word itself is a shorter version of "association football". it was invented by british people in the 1880s. so imagine my bafflement at the way in which young people insist that calling it soccer is an americanism. i love USA fans chant of "its called soccer!". i think its really funny and yanks should use it all the time to wind up opponents. their fans should be the millwall of international teams and just not care what others think of them. i had one kid recently tell me i know nothing about the game because i called it soccer. i wanted to drown him. anyway thats my rant. i figured this was as good a place as any.
You are not English. No self respecting Englishman would call the beautiful game "soccer". As a REAL Englishman, I disown you on behalf of our once great nation. All in jest, you understand.
Biggest upset? Nah, 1954 Germany beating Hungary was practically impossible. They battered then like 8:1 or something in the group stage and if I remember correctly, they were never down all tournament, except for like 20 minutes in the finals.
That was the smart decision get the Scottish immigrant to captain the USA national team and bribe the Italian ref to beat England 😂😂😂 love that being Scottish
Hey Z, i just wanted to let you know some VfB Stuttgart Fans were stripped naked by police while going to the champions league game against Red Star Belgrade. All the ultra fan busses were supposed to meet at the border and be escorted directly to the stadium. Apparently police wanted to look for pyrotechnics and forced people to completely strip. Some refused and were beaten by Police. The Ultras now left and won´t attend the game. As we know Uefa will probably not do anything of significance but i thought you might want to talk about it. Sky also reported on it, at least german sky
Until 1990s football in Europe was shit compared to South America. The point is the media and $$ was in Europe, so they always proclaimed a Europeand Nation as favorite to the world cup just to be destroyed by south americans. The final was Brazil X Uruguay, and the favorite was England? Haha Premier League also was trash till 2000s.
EDIT 2: Holy crap, I didn't realise that the US lost more soldiers than us in WW2, even though they only fought for half as long as Britain/France/Germany/Russia. I'm going to leave this original comment as I said it and will own it: Not that it's an excuse but also understand that we (England) had just lost hundreds of thousands of young men in WW2. It was only 5 years since that ended. But yes, was a hell of an achievement for the US team. EDIT 1: Also, the US reminds me of China a LITTLE bit when it comes to football/soccer, they have so many people that statistically speaking, you should have more world class players than anyone between you. Between China and the US, there are nearly 2 billion people, so lets say 800/900 million men, from that lets say that 300 million of them are between 18 and 35 (just spit balling numbers here). If the two countries actually took football seriously, these two would be unstoppable. If they had a football player factory like Frances Clairfontaine academy they would be producing world class teams through the nose. All of this is just going off pure numbers of course, but it could realistically happen.
"I dropped out of theWorld Cup squad because I didn't get time off work"
"Sure grampa, let's get you to bed"
The English player who blocked a second goal was THE Alf Ramsey who would manage England to win the 1966 World Cuo
I literally chuckled as he said "a guy named Ramsey" lol
*Win the 1966 World Cup thanks to a fake Goal, I think you meant to say
"A guy named Ramsey"?
You mean SIR ALF RAMSEY, the Manager of the 1966 England World Cup Winning Team!

Hahaha thank you Ipswich & England legend
Bro grandma said finish your vegetables if you want dessert.
Grandma is behind the camera with a stern look
As a Scot i will gladly listen to any England defeat
As an Irishman. Same.
As a German, same.
As an American of Indian (subcontinent) descent, same.
As a Scot with Irish family, same twice.
as a bolivian, same
Shocked Zealand just discovered this game now. This is some of our favorite banter

In the same 50's World Cup, Brazil lost in the final to Uruguay (the Maracanazo), and because of that, it never wore the white kit again.
The level of disbelief in England upon hearing of this result was so great, commentators were demanding confirmation that the actual score was 10-1 to England!
i love a football history lesson. more pls
I am fired up when you start running again.

13:26 Tbf the England team had to take a 31 hour flight to Brazil.
I can save you 18 minutes of your day by just saying this is 18 minutes of bald eagles and hot dogs.

I wish this guy worked on his thumbnails and video titles so I would have some clue what the video was about before I watched
Tbf I like when i don't know what he's gonna be yapping about
So that you don't klick 9 of 10 videos because you know beforehand that you're not interested?
How do you think youtube video creating works, my guy?
This was so cool, it felt like something the main channel should know about too.

You probably know this, but here goes anyway,
The USA are the reigning Olympic Champions at Rugby Football.
1974 and 1978 england also didn't qualify
I’m afraid that’s not correct my dude. England had 2 failed attempts in 1974 & 1978
Intresting Leicester City was 5000/1 to win the 2015-2016 Premier League.
I dont know if this is true, but i've heard that when journalists in the US got the news of the result, they figured there was a 1 missing in the score, and england had actualy won 10-1
I blame Southgate and kane for this loss 😂😂
That thunbnail was intro enough
wow this time the thumbnail isn't a stretched out screenshot good job z
You are fired zealeand, get your things and leave.
England bottling a World Cup is so on brand.

Lol. "Some guy named Ramsey"? That would be world cup winning England manager Sir Alf Ramsey.
The US national team will be relegated to last place in the FIFA ranking. Also would Poch be interested in the Finnish national team gig.
