I love this so much and I'm a 24-year-old. Thank you, Dr. WIlliam Thomas. I want to be an ambassador from elderhood someday as well. But for now, I want to be an ambassador for elderhood. "We are all elders in the making!"
This guy is funny ! He’s making a great point ! I’ve always thought like this but it’s so refreshing to here and see someone talk about it. God bless him ! Hope he’s doing well !
Thank you Bill for addressing such an important subject in such a compassionate and understanding way. Elderhood is just as important as any other stage in life. Our elders deserve the honoring and valuing that they have earned by arriving at this stage in life. I hope to hear more from you! Robbie Kaye - Beauty and Wisdom
Marvelous and passionate message reflective of the true soul of Dr. Bill T. He is the ambassador for Elderhood and a person that is helping all of us embrace our next stage of life. Keep it up Bill we want you to blaze the trail!!!
I work with Dementia patients in an Eden setting, and I absolutely LOVE my job! These wonderful people I get to see everyday make my life worthwhile. The Eden Alternative makes such a difference in the care we give. Thank you so much!
What a great foreshadowing of things to come Bill! So great to hear you speak and meet you last night at the Villages! Thanks for continuing to be the elderhood ambassador! I look forward to continuing to follow your work! ♥
I'm looking forward to seeing Bill Thomas speak at the downtown Seattle library tonight. A coworker is joining me and I know it will undoubtedly help me in my work with elders. It will also help me plan for my own elderhood--something I see not as a sad inevitability, but as an opportunity I can approach with eagerness and confidence!
Thank you so much for putting this into words, I am writing a sociology paper about agism, thank you so much! I have been researching this subject and your video explains it all!
Go, Bill Thomas! Your books - IN THE ARMS OF ELDERS and WHAT ARE OLD PEOPLE FOR? and SECOND WIND (not to mention LIFE WORTH LIVING) need all to become bestsellers. Maybe they will as we all keep aging and realize how ageism really has harmed the chances for our country to be all that it can be.
As an aging boomer, I embrace Elderhood. We shall radicalize and transform it the way we have transformed everything else. It shall mark a period of intense self-actualization which will contribute much wisdom to our culture..
Robert Bruce: you have an important point that shouldn't be overlooked: the aging boomer generation, if it doesn't get hooked on the snake-oil sales pitches of "anti-aging" remedies, has an unprecedented opportunity for self-actualization/self-transcendence, and IN THAT capacity, the opportunity to, as Bill Thomas would have it: save the world! The one major problem with this amazing opportunity is that too many aging boomers live in a state of fear of, not freedom to age. And FEAR was never the enabler for boldness.
Insightful thought by this physician. Our obsession with youth as he says, is destroying our view of aging when it should be viewed as experience, knowledge and wisdom. I've heard many criticisms of the baby boomer generation as being narcissistic, self-obsessed, and selfish. Ironic that the greatest generation (their parents) were followed by what some consider to be the worst generation?
Dr Thomas is one of my heroes. He and Dr Robert Butler (who passed away last year) are probably the two most vocal and articulate advocates for elderhood and voices against the prevalent and destructive ageism in our society that mostly goes unchallenged. But, as Dr Thomas says, the boomers are coming. ;) It's gonna be interesting!
i believe boomers are going to 'remake' elderhood, not unlike they did adolescence and adulthood. and say what anyone will, things have only been getting better, not worse. and they will continue to do so. it's going to be very interesting, and i believe, very glorious, for everyone!
Elderhood, a real part of our lifespans BUT only if we move past adulthood ... the first to venture into it would be the Boomers. Great presentation, great thoughts. Does anyone else know where to hear more of his thoughts?
So true! There's certainly association between capitalism (on steroids) and baby boomers' obsession with efficiency and productivity that gave rise to hyper-adulthood... capitalism doesn't care much or value those who can't participate in it fully (as observed by pediatrician and geriatrician salaries... and those of teachers, etc... basically anyone catering to either kids or elders is under appreciated by the society...
In 2024, Actual number of practicing Geriatricians is around 3,500 for 68 million Seniors in the U.S. Minimal acceptable number should be 50,000 Practicing Geriatricians in the U.S., 3,500 is about 7% Geriatricians of the 50,000 100% bare minimum number.
I don't like the term "elder" as it "still" reeks of ageism . Much prefer "senior" like a senior in high school as the definition speaks to a higher rank rather than being defined specifically by age as a number ! The seniority of life is an achievement not a number factor[y]!
Why do you think people who are "senior" should be ranked higher than any other age group? All ages are equal, a baby or a child in my eyes is equal to a person in their 30s, 40s, 50s or 80s. All have equal value in society. The people who are older will have more life experience and knowledge and hopefully wisdom but they aren't of a 'higher rank' just because they are more 'senior' in age. I believe words that rank people as higher or lower are dangerous. It's not the word 'elder' that is ageist or promotes ageism, it is the attitudes within a society that leads to ageism. Whether you use senior or elder doesn't actually matter, but don't diminish either of those words by associating a rank to them. That is elitist.
Yes--we were 'the hippys!" Money didn't matter! Hah! Now, if u r reaching retirement age, as I am, & don't have enough money 2 retire, join me in having ur own home-based business. Veteran, old hippy, worker, parent..doesn't matter. U can still create a legacy 4 ur family & create residual income that will only increase as you age. I don't know about u, but I have no Soc. Sec. So many have lost IRAs, investments, jobs..join me in creating income, &helping others succeed. garden of lia at yahoo
The Jews feel its another stage. I feel it's the end . And I'm out in 3 yrs. Or before by 75. Why would anyone agree to live in scarcity in income, food, transportation and lack of a social life ? And why do the elderly stick around then complain I'm alone. No I think we mustvencouragecsenuirs to consider an early option.

I LOVE this man. What an amazing human being. If only we cared more about our elderly.

I just discovered this talk. Thank you so much, Dr. Thomas, for this powerful message.

I just heard about him 10 years later and I am the child of a baby boomer. Life was difficult for me, I wasn't allowed to have friends growing up.
This totally awesome. I showed my classes this presentation and the students loved it. It generated a lot of discussion.

It might be kinder to reframe dementia patients to: I work with people living with dementia
*SO SO SO* important and this is coming from a 25-year-old medical student. Ageism is horrible and I hope Dr. Thomas' talk spurs lots of conversation

Empowering. Dynamic. Eye-opening. But who could expect anything less. Caregiving has arrived when Dr. Thomas has the stage at TEDx. Very cool.
Bill is a genuine national treasure! This should be required viewing in every gerontology, sociology and marketing class.
Very well spoken!

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful! Thank you, Bill!
Unique thought, Elderhood is needed.

What an inspiring public speaker in such a 'controversial' matter!
Awesome, eye opening. Thanks
