As a photographer and a model... I appreciate everything in this video, from the info you gave to the action the model was taking. It all comes together quite nicely.
Interesting that the comments here shows how the competition between lighting companies and products have exploded in the last few years. Personally I think it is good that there is now choice in size and price for mono lights. The ability to take studio lights anywhere whatever brand you use is what excites me.
Great info and video Seth. In fact because of this video and some additional research I picked up one at my local camera store and was sold on it after shooting several picts. When used in conjunction with Connect Pro it works seemlessly and like a charm. I liked it so much that I sold both of my A1s and OCF Adapters and bought second A2. These are the the kind of lights I've been waiting for. Thanks again.
I’ve been shooting with the Angler 24 Fastbox + AD100 for almost an year now. A great setup. Profoto users will probably love their new setup as well. Profoto connect (non pro) and a leaf shutter camera would be my dream setup … only if leaf shutter cameras were more popular.
4:54 Freeze the frame and you can see the hot spot the A2 produces in the softbox (when closely examining the catchlights in the model's eyes). Bare bulbs with a frosted front are much better for use in softboxes.
That’s not a hot spot it’s just a highlight..there is clearly detail in her skin even in the video of the shot not even the actual image file itself… also barebulbs may evenly fill larger boxes but in a 2ft box with double diffusion meaning an inner baffle that’s hit to then expel the light to evenly hit the outer diffusion there’s is then no real difference… further more this was in sunlight with her warning reflective makeup and it’s still not a hotspot. If it were it’d be blown out and like I said before there’s detail… sorry but if you’re going to “freeze frame” and scrutinize in a mixed lighting scenario since clearly this strobe isn’t intended to dominate the exposure here as you see the whole environment… there isn’t even a hot spot on that chrome paint on the wall she’s leaning on,. Sorry just had to chime in here … highlights are part of what creates dimension had it’s been blown out white with no detail shown I’d understand but that’s not the case here. At most you got a specular highlight on top of her her upper lip which also helps create dimension rather than a flat look.. and there’s a ton of shots from this set on my IG as well.
@@LastXwitness I was talking about the reflection of the softbox in her eyes. In that reflection, you see that the front baffle of the softbox is not evenly illuminated, just what you would expect from this frosted disc design Profoto uses. I did not talk about any hotspots on her skin. I hope that clarifies my point.
@@coolcat23 I apologize however those are usually call “catchlights” when you see the reflection of your light source in your subjects eyes. Hotspots generally refer to blown out spots where the light source hit so clarity from both sides here miscommunication
@@LastXwitness Thanks for responding again. I think it is quite common to refer to "hot spotting" when a light creates a hot spot in the centre of a light modifier front baffle. It is that hot spot I was referring to and it can be seen as substructure within the catchlights. I've edited my comment to make it clearer. All the best.
At first I was like “cool” then I saw the price….I’ll stay with my super cheap Speedlights and work around any downfalls as I am just a hobbyist and still get nice results 🤣
Sure, a 3-light Godox/Flashpoint AD100 backpack kit with umbrellas, simple modifiers and a transmitter is cheaper than one A2 with transmitter. The Profoto app, UI, and build quality are certainly better, but not enough for most people that don't make a good living off of photography to justify. I mean, I do make good money, but I am paranoid about replacing location gear.
Great video Seth and I have the A2's and B10X. With regards to the shake test, I really wouldn't consider that a real shake test, especially grabbing it by the light. The main concern with that light falling is if it's on a stand and the stand drops for some reason. The force from that would definitely cause it to fall and not even from a great height. I would just recommend screwing the light to the light stand and then attaching the modifier. That's my 2 cents.
well been running them for about a year now mostly in the new OCF 2 adapter which is also magnetic.. havnt had a single problem also any stand droppin can cause all sorts of damage no matter
Really good mention of the front lens difference with the A1X/A10 series. I wonder if they "throw" better the light at a distance compared to the A2 with less loss in intensity.
Amazing... Great points... The real world use and demonstration was amazing as well... I have two questions... 1. Does the A2 lose recycle time on higher power settings when the battery goes below 50%??? 2. If I leave the battery on the A2 and don't use it for sometime... Does the battery drain???
Hey soo I own 4 of these now and I havnt noticed a change in recycle time when the battery is low.. (maybe with the older 11wh batteries from 5 years ago i cant say though). and 2 no i dont find the battery drained from sitting while in the unit as I store mine in a case that way but again this is my personal experience. thanks so much for the kind words appreciate it
@@LastXwitness Thanks a million... Really really appreciate your quick response... You have such extensive experience with the brand so your experience is what I am looking for... Forgive me for being a bother... as I forgot to ask before... Also the same 2 questions for the A10?
no and yea i wish that USB C port was for power delivery so I could charge it in the unit maybe if they hear that feedback enough they can do somethign via firmware but who knows
Newbie. Still can figure out the point of using a flash to catch hair in motion. Cant i just increase shutter speed? I guess if i am constrained by ISO or f stop i would need the light, but how often does that happen irl?
A traditional camera + flash combo is usually (there are exceptions, HSS, leaf shuttered cameras / lenses) limited to a shutter speed around a 250th of a second.
A traditional camera + flash combo is usually (there are exceptions, HSS, leaf shuttered cameras / lenses) limited to a shutter speed around a 250th of a second.
So, let's recap : It's pretty much like a SMDV B120, with 400 shots instead of 900 on one charge, 20j less power at maximum output, less secure mount to the clic Profoto softbox (which is the same as the SMDV flip softboxes, but only for Profoto), worse modeling light placement and I'll guess less power, triple the price for one unit. Yup, I went with SMDV and don't regret it after seeing that.
That gels fit.. I literally show the dome fitting it’s the same size … they are jsut making more of them and more magnetic accessories over all aaaand and ocf adapter for all those mods on that speedring that works with it and the speedlights
Sorry profoto but I totally don’t get this light? The only reason I would buy it is if I was looking for a new speed light with some extra power. Oh, and I’m a Profoto user.
Power in continuous mode, LED only 200 lumens 180 lux @ 1m? And the LED continuous light is 3500k so it would need a gel or cto. Adapters for B10X gels? So the led is not as powerful as a Pavobulb even? Curious to know where Profoto is sourcing their LEDs from, why the LED specs are so weak. 200 lumens is not a lot of light. Switching to video this unit isn't going to throw much light. For $1000 the LED should be at least 6000 - 9000 lumens @ 1m/3ft.
Please don't misuse the word "street photography". This is portraits on the streets with a model. That being said. The clic octa and this thing seems like the dream combo.
Don't presume that there is a universally accepted definition of the genre. AFAIK, there is no common agreement among the world's professional photographic societies.
Tide is turning… Profoto is following Godox now. Slightly better quality than Godox but with the Brocolor price range. (Not reaching the quality of the Bron.) Pointless idea.
Well, it is probably just a modified godox ad100pro right?! Everything is pointiert at godox only battery and Display is change for Pro photo... get a godox original and save a lot of money ... they must be out of their mind... 990 dollars for that thing? The original godox is 220euros less than 300 Dollars ?! What you gonna do? 3 godox and a trigger or 1 prophoto? Its hard. 🤣🤣🤣

Great review Seth! Some nice images with this setup too!
These will make for great kickers during wedding receptions.
This was very helpful. I just purchased one. Looking forward to using this one

This actually looks really cool, love that magnet attached softbox.
Seems like everyone wants to go towards Mag mod
Great Review Seth. I think I may have to add this to the Arsenal. Looks great to hide places as well.
Yea I can def see that being an application.. I gotta see if I’m gonna be swapping out some speedlights for these in my small flash kit I travel with

that looks like an epic strobe for outdoor macro shooters, good video
Didn’t even think of that … prolly

A lot of well-presented and illustrated information, packed into a short segment. Typical Seth Miranda style, and all the better for it. 👍

This is actually the exact form factor I need. Though I’ll probably wait a year for the A2X or A20 or whatever the refresh ends up being called.
brilliant again Seth, mine's just been delivered

it will synch with an iPhone like A10 to take pictures? I like that feature for quick snap shots
Perfect companion to the Nikon Z9!

Yes I have both and the A1 without diffusor dome throws more light than the A2
I’m guessing you have to buy the flash trigger too? So altogether with the soft box we’re looking at around $1450.
Probably a bit more.

ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS

Really interesting to see this. A rare switch-up where Godox innovated and Profoto followed? Looks cool, but too spendy for hobbyists.

Even when profoto would put a lower price for the A and B series no one keep up. It’s the best system on the market but the price is way to much
