The Ultimate Adventure technically starts with check-in and tech inspection, but in reality the trip starts for all a few days earlier as vehicle preparation drags on through late nights and into planned departure times. The true adventure begins when tires hit asphalt spinning. Once the group checks in and addresses any last-minute repairs or tech inspection issues they load up and follow leader Rick Péwé trekking to the Nebraska Sand Hills where they await steep climbs, narrow gullies, and plenty of trees before reaching a 3-foot water crossing at Dismal River. Fred Williams, editor of Petersen’s 4-Wheel & Off-Road and host of Dirt Every Day, tags along with his custom made 1990 Dodge Tug Truck prepped to tow out any stragglers.

the narator's voice brings back VHS monster truck tape memories. thank you motor trend for this
Should just let Fred or Freiburger narrate this. Plus fire the producers who decided to turn this into an infomercial.
How do you want them to pay for it? Would you propose a subscription fee?
BillyJoe1305 It's funny how so many people say this, but there are plenty of examples of projects that are done solely for the purpose of gaining greater name recognition and are considered media opportunities in and of themselves without the need for making things feel like an infomercial. It's not uncommon for these to be considered a write-off from a financing standpoint, and the return is seen from more of a social word-of-mouth currency that isn't as tangible as advertisement fees but in some ways can be considered just as valuable. Do you think companies that finance race teams are expecting to receive some type of immediate financial return? Nope, it's just about getting their name out there. 4Wheel&Off Road could consider making this video the same, as most of their previous videos have been, but apparently they have some new business executives who don't want that done. Not to mention the numerous Motortrend video series that don't even review products, such as Epic Drives, so there are a LOT of ways to approach this. A great philosophy is simply to make something that you would want to watch, and I am sure that most people would agree that they don't want to watch something that feels like an infomercial. Talking about subscription fees is kind of ridiculous considering that they haven't done that in the past, and most people wouldn't be willing to begin paying now. Doing that would just alienate a large portion of their fan base. I already pay one for their magazine, and MotorTrend, if they aren't happy about that and want $ for these videos I'd rather they don't make videos than make shitty ones that give them a bad name.

1: Are you really going to decry commercial sponsors and talk about race teams in the same sentence?
2: These videos aren't terrible you just actually listened to the other people on the internet telling you how terrible commercials are. It really isn't close to an infomercial.
3: The Magazines are stuffed full of adds and often contain articles that read like them.
4: Using the videos as one offs to increase popularity requires that the videos all be one offs. The long running channel with a long running series needs to produce some measurable profit. Add campaigns rarely make that cut.
5: Even if they did wish to continue using it as an add the budget would need a serious cut.
6: The subscription model was mentioned as there is another popular RUclips car channel that recently went this route.
BillyJoe1305 Yea, but I'm just saying they have done a much better job in the past. There really isn't a problem with me having that opinion and voicing it is there? Plus, the other YT channel you talk about, I'd be real interested to see their subscription numbers, because if you visit forums/comments essentially most people have nothing positive to say any longer since they got bought out so I doubt they are attracting many people to their subscriptions now. It would suck to see that happen here too ...
BillyJoe1305 PS thanks for the civil discussion and not the normal YT nonsense :)
I wait all year for this!!!
Wouldn't it have been nice to see the completion of the Tug Truck prior to it being debuted here? It kinda spoils the surprise.
If you want to see the whole build, buy the magazine! hehe :p ... ya, I got excited after the previous video where they started the build and they showed those teaser clips of it mid way through. I agree this definitely feels like a spoiler lol
This really hits home. I spend my summer riding quads in those hills!
Nice rigs, nice to see full size rigs getting trail rash! I like seeing a variety of different makes and models in action.
I like NE. Worked on a ranch in Halsey for a while. Great country in that part of the state.
Its great to see so many Mopars. The new Mopars from the trucks to the cars (specifically the Charger/Challenger HellCat) have really put the spotlight back on Mopar for the first time in decades and for the first time in my life time Mopar appears to have a bright future and tearing it up with lots of power.
We want more Fred !!
Order the DVD, there's a whole section of Fred Williams and Ultimate Tug Truck, and other additional footage.
I really enjoyed this video. I'm very happy that Motor Trend has shared this lengthy piece on youtube for free for the average subscriber, and left it as an option to buy the dvd as a hard copy or online. Very cool guys. Very nice rigs!
gotta love all that fine greenery. I bet there's some 10 ft plants just out of camera view
Suggestion: Next time around, among all the other participant, send a single invitation to the armed forces or some rescue service or even a school with a mechanics programme. It would add an interesting element I think.
It would be awesome to see some modified off road rescue vehicles, or something along those lines. Maybe even build the vehicle next year with a group like you suggest, that would make for good television :) ... lots of good mechanics in the Army!
There were a few veterans on the trip. Both retired and active duty. Hell we even had a reunion for 2 guys that served together and lost touch...randomly they both ended up on the trip as codrivers.

Basically Drag Week in a 4x4. Great idea
Thanks very much for making all this fantastic content available for free. you guys are great
I just cant stop watching these
Awesome!!!!!! Love Ultimate Adventure. Hope they do it next year and years to come.
It pisses me off how they cherry pick the trucks they want on the video. They keep showing the same damn five trucks over an over again yet there are 23 of them. Show some of that badass '78 Bronco and the Scout II and enough already with the same damn Jeeps and Chevys.
Is that Marijuana lol its through out the whole video hahahah
Ditch weed, grows naturally. Yes, still cannabis strain though :) ... will not get you high though. Similar to hemp or some such that is low in THC.
Leftovers from the pre WW2 hemp industry ,its not legal to farm anymore even though it does not get you high and it grows everywhere like a weed now.
***** Lol, I guess, it just grows all over the place where I grew up too
I'm from the Sandhills marijuana grows like weeds up there because the dove eat the seeds and excrete it out. Some of our pastures gets 8ft+ tall plants, it's really bad in all tree stands.
Is that weed growing around 11:30 in? haha.
Haha definitely!
Nothing special. Agricultural hemp can be seen all over my place. But you probabl wont get high from it. I Think they make some kind of cloth and ropes out of this.
also on 9:44 theres plants :D
it's Ditch weed as they call it, it grows all over the place from old cash crops in the late 1800s and yes it is a weed
was on the trip, Ditch weed AKA Cannabis was all over the place
That red dodge with the diesel is bad ass!
Yes!! Been waiting for this!
Those full sizes made it through quite good, didn´t exspect that.
:O I have been waiting, SICK!!
FOR COUPLE OF MONTHS?!?!? IN THE BUILD VIDEO IT SAID THAT THEY ONLY HAD 9 DAYS!
That's just the opening scene. Then he says they have to build it in "a matter of months".
the video was filmed a while ago but it was just released
Good way to start my morning:D
that nitto truck is awesome!
LOVE the 1st gen. Dodge Ram 12-valve Cummins Tug Truck!! Makes me regret selling my '97 Dodge Ram 12-valve Cummins...again.
Great vid! Also, Nebraska's not one big flat corn field? Huh, interesting.
Love you guys
More... Make more videos like this! MORE!
Freds truck and the old militery dodge is the nicest trucks
My dad didn't think it was nearly this cool when I rubbed a tree with his truck.
Love that Nitto truck

Fast402Riderz
I lived in North Platte at the time. Was going to school and worked at Advanced Auto Parts. I got to sell some guys parts and check out their rigs. They are even more insane in person
Cool infomercial bro...
Man I love that Nitto Dodge Army truck, in fact I love most of those Army trucks. Ive always been more into drag racing and road racing but being from Texas mudding and off roading is fun but I dont like the slow speeds of rock crawling.
Cool riding
Anybody else see the marajuana growing at 9:50 ???
ITS EVERYWHERE
814 Bassin in nebraska you have alot of ditch marajuana its no good for anything and its not the stuff people smoke. (not anything good anyway)
+814 Bass Fishing left over from the Hemp production days. It grows sporadicly throughout the midwest.
We call it ditch weed in nebraska
Looks like beaut fun!
That weird voice-over though...hmmm.
A little part of me died inside at 9:48....finest nebraska ditch weed
11:27 was anyone aware of the cannabis growing everywhere, or was that just me?
Microsoft Sam, is that you?
the best off road!
hell ya they got a grand Cherokee WK on ultimate adventure :D I Wonder if it has IFS
hahaha, random cannabis at 9:45. 10:00 shows that iconic fan leaf shape right at the wheel.
I like the look of that Powerwagon if it had some kind of angled back body on it.
I didn't know you had to be picked to do this. I assumed it was like drag week or power tour.
nice video
its crazy there is hemp every where there
Weed plants getting crushed at 9:55 lol
SWEET!
the '90 dodge or (tuc truck) looks the best in my opinion.
the libby is 🔥🔥🔥

YEAH NORTH PLATTE
Lol this was in my home town and I didn't even here about it.
look at all those pot plants lol
I can't seem to find this on Google Play, and the annotations in the video don't seem to show up. Anyone have a link?
does anyone know how much itd cost to make one of these? just a simple one i dont need the bells and whistles
When do you guys stop in Illinois? You guys should stop somewhere and let all the fans come.
I wasn't sure if I wanted to vote this up or down. Not beating the hell out of the trails = good. Overt commercialism, and Warn winches only? meh - aren't all Americans tired of 'adventures' / movies / media that are really commercials yet?
But then there was that beat to hell Suzuki at 10:52 - notice how little air time his rig got? I'm a Jeep guy (and this did have some nice Jeeps in it, as well as other neat and unique rigs), but that Suzuki owner and his rig is why I'm voting the video up.
Motor Trend - stop the archaic marketing campaigns / angles. You could achieve the same without it.
I agree and I don't like the obvious advertisements, but that is how they get free parts from manufacturers.
Concur. The narrator alone makes me cringe.
The alternative is to go subscription like /Drive, just visit their channel if you need to see how well people are taking that.
BillyJoe1305 don't even get me started on /Drive+
Harrison Conyers
I'm just pointing out the alternative. I don't personally have any qualms against either business model. Although I have decided I'm happy to watch the adds in return for free content & I haven't given /Drive any money yet.
Baja Mike Kim from Finger Tight motorsports.
When do you think Ram will offer a short bed as long as the one on the Power Wagon?
I live so close to north platte
Would love to do this with a highly modded Dodge Dakota.
who let fred tighten those bead locks like that
is that the same 37 dodge ive seen before on dirt every day????
Yeah, infomercial voice guy blows the whole thing. can't finish, later.
