    I was scouting around the enemy's castle at night, a good half a kilometre away from the walls in a large grass field to stay well out of sight. This was said to be one of if not the most highly protected castle in all of the land. It had three exterior walls, between which was a fifty-meter gap filled with oil that could be set ablaze at any time. All three walls had their own battlements and dozens of men that lived at each of the walls to keep a constant eye out for intruders and to rain armour-piercing arrows upon anyone that was deemed a threat. My goal was simple: find a weak point in their defences, and report back.
    Suddenly I froze as a light appeared behind me. I cautiously turned around and couldn't believe what I saw. It was a giant. These were creatures of myth, that you would tell your kids about to scare them into doing their household duties, but you never really believed that they existed. These towering beasts were three to four times the size of a man with limbs like tree trunks and were said to be strong enough to knock aside a dozen armoured soldiers at a time. Their armour was supposed to be centimetres thick leather armour, with steel helmets so thick they could withstand a hit from a battering ram. Only siege level weapons were supposed to be able to take down these beasts.
    The giant had just lit an oily rock on fire that was at least the size of a horse's head. The behemoth put it in a sling that looked like it should be attached to a trebuchet, not wielded by hand. He started swinging it around, slowly at first, but slowly gaining speed. After a few short seconds, the sling was swinging so fast a low but incredibly loud hum was emanating from it, the flaming boulder just an orange ring illuminating the giant.
    I could see torchlight frantically moving around the castle barracks. The castle guards had seen the attacker but were hopelessly unprepared for what came next.
    An ear-shattering SNAP echoed into the night as the living siege weapon let go of one end of the sling. The enormous projectile approaching the castle at speeds that rivalled a ballista. With a gigantic CRASH, the boulder punched a hole clean through the first and second layers of the castle wall, stopping inside the third wall, but somehow the walls stayed standing. They didn't fare so well after the second shot though. I watched in horror as rock after rock was hurled at the castle until the entire castle was nothing but a pile of flaming stone rubble. After observing the destruction he had caused, the giant walked off into the night. The most secure place inside or outside the kingdom had just been destroyed as if it was a sandcastle, and I didn’t know what to think.

      @Henry DallOglio I think a giant with a bow would be a ballista bucko. why not a giant with one of those gigantic crossbows that required 2 people to fire except scaled up to giant size? That would probably be like a super ballista assuming you could bend the string without getting it permanently stuck, from what I understand the string on that particular crossbow was made of metal, and even if you made a gigantic spring-steel string that was 4 times thicker, they are still bending it farther back because of the larger surface area of the crossbow putting more abuse on the metal. Not to mention, that I’m pretty sure metal becomes less resilient the thicker it is.

    Having played as an Ogryn in Warhammer 40K Darktide has given me a greater appreciation of what size means in combat. Ogryns are are easily twice the size and width of a normal human, and bonking and bullying hordes of little humans from a first-person perspective was very eye-opening. If you can knock someone on their feet they're much easier to beat in combat, and with the height, strength and leverage I feel like this would be a big tactic of giants on things more approaching their height, or if your fiction has giants that aren't house sized (or if they vary greatly between types).
    Another thing this made me think of was the trope I mostly saw in superhero cartoons growing up, where there's a big dude who's gotten a hold of a little dude (usually the hero). Then invariably throw the little dude away. Why? You have him at your mercy! I mean, I know the real reason is that the cartoon can't keep airing if the villain of one episode crushes the hero while he's helpless, but you get what I mean. I feel like crushing, or even tearing off limbs, is something that large humanoids would do to small humanoids. Heck, chimps do that to monkeys or even other chimps given the chance.
    That also made me think, giant chimps would be an absolutely terrifying fantasy monster.

  • @megamihestia4049

    From a biological point of view, a larger animal is actually worse at dissipating heating, again due to the square cube law. For doubled size, there is quadruple the surface area to dissipate the heat, but 8 times the internal volume, that is 8 times of cells inside to produce heat. This is actually a phenomenon common in real life. A very large animal, say an elephant, consumes much less food in proportion to its body weight than a very small animal, say a mouse. So in some sense, many fantasy work depicting giants living in high mountains where the weather is cold is actually fairly realistic, as their body could handle, maybe even very comfortable in such an environment. If giants lived under hotter climates, they probably would evolve some sort of capability to better dissipate heat, or just live in water, like hippos.

      elephants actually slow their metabolisms to prevent them from boiling. their cells mitochodria literally just work less to avoid the heat issue. so i visualise realistic giants living day to day in this low power state and being able to, when in adrenaline rush, accelarate to full power for limited bursts in combat before they begin to overheat and need to fall back. perhaps they would wear the padding on their legs and waist and mail on their torso to allow airflow while defending against arrows. also they would begin turning red as they fight as their blood rushes to their skin surface to dissipate heat. perhaps the tactics in war would be an initial assulat by giants and by the time the rest of the army catches up the giants are overheated and can rest behind the lines and fire rocks until they are cooled enough to rush into battle again.

However, I'm not a materials genius, so it's quite possible steel would weigh itself down faster than buulding the sufficient strength. Once he was on the ground however David used Goliath's sword to cut his head off. Then he dragged it all the way to Salem (which would eventually be Jerusalem/City of David) and buried it under Golgotha.
      1 Samuel 17: 43 He said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
      1 Samuel 17: 48 As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him.
      49 Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground.
      50 So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him.
      51 David ran and stood over him. He took hold of the Philistine’s sword and drew it from the sheath. After he killed him, he cut off his head with the sword. When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran.

      Hmmm I prefer the single large boulder because smaller things can be blocked by walls, shields, trenches and such. If you have one big boulder, good luck trying to block that. I know I know even small pellets are impossibly damaging at that force but if you have like 20 pellets that's at best 20 men, at worse less due to inaccuracy. You wouldn't kill 2 with one pellet in most cases. But with one giant boulder you could get much much more provided they are in a dense enough formation. I guess small pellets are more against spread out formations.

      I wonder if you could make specially designed armors that let air go under it for cooling purpose.
      That said, many giants seem to be covered in massive amounts of fur already in fantasy, which implies that like strength, their cooling capacity is ridiculously high and overcompensate the square-cube loss.

    • @bizarrefruit
      @bizarrefruit 4 года назад +23

      Apologies, but I don't think that's true. A larger creature has a larger surface area to lose heat from, elephants can survive in extreme heat based on that exact principle; capiliaries in their large, fan like ears and wrinkly skin.
      For large mammals the problem is generally getting and keeping warm, not the opposite, that's why large cold-blooded creatures have been far more common than large warm-blooded creatures.
      Look at bears and whales, both have to eat tons (literally), to keep their bodies warm in the trying times and both have excellent insulation.
      Perhaps I just misunderstood what you meant by 'rejecting heat'.

    • @bizarrefruit
      @bizarrefruit 4 года назад +15

      Team Cap Thanks for the explanation, that all makes perfect sense, for a cube and as a principle of volume.I also understand now what the original poster was getting at.
      I don’t think that is easily applicable to a giant because it isn’t a cube, nor is an elephant which is why it’s ears are relevant, circulatory systems and appendages being different/not cubed.
      It would be interesting to know how the efficiency of perspiration in cooling larger humans fits in.

    • @bizarrefruit
      @bizarrefruit 4 года назад +5

      @Team Cap I am not going to pretend to be an expert on physics or thermo-dynamics.
      That being said, my basic understanding of principles that have kept me alive in -45 degrees celsius give me enough confidence to say that a cube of cotton wool has a different properties to a cube of blubber for example, they don't insulate equally well and that is further mitigated when you take into account circulation. I have had frostbite, my torso was still toasty warm while my fingers had frozen.
      Frostbite happens because your body cuts off circulation to extremities because the extremities lose heat quicker than the torso. That might conform to the idea that our more voluminous torsos lose temperature less quickly, but it also supports my point that the volume isn't equal across the entire organism and different parts of our bodies lose heat or retain heat differently. That's before we even talk about density etc.
      I'm not trying to say you are wrong about greater volumes, but that rule doesn't take into account the circulatory system, generation of heat via muscle use (shivering for example), restriction of flow to conserve heat and the differences in the tissues that make up our bodies; fat and muscle are different.
      This is a fact: You lose far more heat from your head than your torso. Therefore, a flat calculation of my volume will not tell you exactly how quickly I lose heat. How long my hair is, whether I am wearing tinfoil on my head or a hat will affect my ability to keep or lose heat, just like the elephants flappy ears allow it to cool the heat inside that giant voluminous torso.
      I appreciate you taking the time to explain the idea to me, but I don't think it can be so easily applied to living creatures and their ability to regulate temperature, there are far more variables than just volume.

    • @eth3549
      @eth3549 4 года назад +10

      That's also why you see the large elephants have such wide ears that are used as heat radiators, with blood circulating in them and increasing their surface, while smaller animals don't have such features.

      Alright going to borrow some attack on titan for this one even though their giants are more titans (pun fully intended) rather than giants.
      So there's this one smart (beast) titan that grabs on to a bunch of rocks (or you can just grab a boulder and crush it, the point is, many many numerous hard objects) and just throw it at the target basically a shotgun of sorts. If a human can throw rocks to deal significant damage, scale that up to the strength of a giant and you'll be faced with a very very dangerous foe plus the attack's ranged so good luck in getting close to cut it down to size or whatever.
      Any contraptions like siege crossbows or cannons will be destroyed easily, the only way to advance would be high mobility but there's only so much space on the ground you can run around before being pelted by a range of different sized objects being hurled at you with a high velocity.
      Another idea for a weapon would be a lawnmower of sorts/giant rake/broom (an object that can easily sweep things off the ground) , no need for it to be sharp to reduce self injury. All that's left is how creative you wanna get when killing pesky humans running about.

      Yeah, and depending on the construction of the weapon and technique used, most humans would get decapitated by the first swing, any survivors who ducked would be drenched in gore and probably panic and try to run, meaning easy pickings for the giants using the slings and rocks as big or bigger than human heads. Hell, in a pinch, using the humans' severed heads as sling ammo could be a potentially deadly shock tactic. Decapitate a regiment sent to kill you, sling their severed heads over the wall of the castle that sent them, and watch the puny man-things shit themselves in terror before you demolish their walls and destroy everything they own for their offenses.

      But I would change the blade to something more like a scimitar, so that a pesky heavily armoured human would slide off the blade instead of geting stuck on it.
      And I don't think a double edged blade is a good idea for a scythe. The balance of the scythe comes from "dragging" the blade behind the handles. For a double edged schyte, it's probably better to put one blade on each end. Put the right end down and sweep right to left, lift the right end up, put down the left end and sweep left to right.

Whips would maybe be less costly than a giant scythe if they want to save metal. Axes could work pretty well in place for a scythe. Slingshots and crossbows would be pretty effective as well, and giants could defend tons of regular troops from arrow fire with a large shield. They could also hurl molotov like projectiles maybe, and kamikaze giants could serve as drawbridges or battering rams depending on the giant's and the moat's size.

      They might not be able to jump without buckling their knees, and getting up from a bad fall might take them a lot of time.

    I am a giant and I'd like to explain a few things. First, at 6'6", I am a micro-giant of course in the realm of things, but I have a few physics comments. First: weight. Giants are often depicted with huge muscles and fat bellies. This is unrealistic. For short men, it is very easy to grow bellies and muscles - you have a smaller frame. Us large-framed people are very often "Thin" by look even though our weight is a lot. I recently lost 30 pounds and some people didn't even notice. Large people can gain and lose large amounts of weight and look average to thin. For a giant -- like Andre the Giant say -- to maintain a heavy body weight requires GALLONS OF WINE and SEVERAL DEAD ANIMALS TO EAT THE MEAT OF in order to keep the weight on. It's unreal and probably was not the average consumption of giants of the ancient history of Earth. I hope this helped. Please send me wine.

      They could poison their supplies, blind them or stab them without them noticing (depending on the giant's size) and then infect them with diseases.
      If they could not stab the giant's without the them noticing that means that the giant's aren't really big enough to survive being stabbed through the throat several times at once by multiple smaller humanoids while they are sleeping.
      Additionally, they could also infest them with insects that burrow away at flesh, something that would be far worse to deal with for a giant since those insects are even smaller (and therefore harder to extract) compared to a giant.

    You mentioned giants possibly being able to cool down faster due to their surface area. In fact it would be the opposite. In terms of heat transfer, we often use the surface-area-to-volume ratio, and since volume increases as a cubed function and the surface area as a squared function (of height or length), larger creatures generally take more time to cool down.
    Chur! :)

    • @marky6837
      @marky6837 7 лет назад +16

      Correct! Heat loss from an object is based on the surface area of the object. Heat generation is dependent on the mass (i.e. volume) of the object. So, like you said, the surface area-to-volume ratio could lead to an overheating issue if their metabolism is similar to humanoid metabolism.

      +Shane Kiernan
      You know how people can hug each other to stay warm in the cold? This is because they double their volume and heat generation but the surface only increases by like 50 percent because the surface area that you share is no longer surface but becomes the inside of the new body.
      A giant ifsfor all intense and purposes a dozen people huging each other. IN a weird sort of way. But the logic is the same. THe volume and heat generation ads up, while some surface area increases as well but not in the same pace.
      So yes as long as heat generation per unit volume stays the same as in human as well as heat lost per unit of surface giant would have easier time staying warm in colder climates and have harder time keeping cool in warmer ones.
