As I'm getting ready to leave my home of Bangkok tomorrow morning until August, I feel like it's necessary to make this video about Thai culture... which I've been thinking about creating for months!
Before you watch this video, please know that I love Thailand with all my heart. It's a wonderful country with incredibly warm people, the tastiest of food and a super lively culture. Deanna and I moved here last June and we have been very happy out here in just about every way possible.
BUT... that all being said... Thailand has a unique and offbeat culture that may leave you scratching your head if you come from the U.S. (or any Western country for that matter). This video explains the 10 wackiest things I find about Thai culture.

Favourite thing? The genuine kindness of almost everyone I spoke with. The fact that almost everyone I had anything to do with seemed to care about me….that feeling is lost when you deal with Europeans in Thailand
as a half thai, they will only appear genuine and friendly when you are directly interacting with them. once you are out of their site, they *will* have an opinion about you and obviously gossip about it.

I’ve lived here for eight years, three in Chiang Mai and five in Chiang Rai, and what surprises many is how diverse the country is and how different regions can be.
One of my favorite books is ‘Working With the Thais’ by Henry Holmes and Suchada Tangtontavy.
This would be an interesting subject on perspectives between Westerners and Thais to do a video of.

I got the chance to visit Thailand in September and OH MY GOODNESS! I have no words, I was so in love (especially with the locals). Your videos are so great, thanks for sharing.
I'm Thai, Thailand is hot. Therefore, Thai people like to put ice in drinks such as soft drinks, water, and beer as well. Except for chilled drinks even without ice
Went to Thailand back in 2018 for the first time in 16 years with my dad as a chance to explore part of my heritage (I'm half thai and was born in Thailand but moved to the UK and was raised there).
My first thoughts were immediately about how familial everything felt to me when I visited and stayed in Pattaya. Everyone was so friendly and it was really nice to walk around and explore the local markets, tourist spots, everything just had a nice atmosphere to it.
I don't have anything negative to say about my time there, everything was genuinely enjoyable. 10/10 would go back again.

I have lived in Thailand for 4 years now and sadly just 1 year to go until I move back to the Netherlands. I enjoy everything here so much! From the food to the culture, to the special types of holidays, easy access to beaches and especially Bangkok (Mainly because it's just such a lively city.) I think I will even miss the climate hahah

I’m Thai and I approve of this video. I love Lays chips, I love sniffing those menthol sticks, I love smiling, and hospitality is huge there which is funny cause I’m actually majoring in hospitality in college right now.

The nickname thing is so true! My family used to host Thai exchange students and some of the nicknames I remember were "Bank" and "Benz" (like Mercedes-Benz). Never knew that was the reason why.

Most Asian countries drink their beer cold or with ice. Maybe because of the tropical weather? I only know in Britain they drink it warm.

I’m Thai and I live in Thailand. Also the name thing is so true because I know a person named “In Love” and “Iphone” and also “บะหมี่” which means noodles and a bunch more people
I just love sunsets at Thailand. I have seen most beautiful one in my life on Ko Tao.
For the Lays chips, they also sell combinations sometimes like mixing for example Sour Cream and Barbeque in one bag.
My favorite thing in Thailand is everyone very very friendly and kind

Drew, I am not a traveler like you are , but I have been to 40 countries. Thailand is my favorite for the exact reason you mentioned in the beginning of the video. I was in Thailand in January 2024 for three weeks. Best vacation ever friendliest people. Bangkok is as clean as it comes when it comes to cities just amazing after looking at the three other cities I was at in Thailand. USA is truly a third country at least in the cities.

It's a great place, but I wouldn't want to live there for sure. It probably depends which province. My wife's from Nakhon Pathom. We had a good time, went to shop at lotus, big c, eat cake and kawaii drinks at Memory House.. but then I started missing Western Food. Grocery stores do not sell the necessities.. just a miniscule selection of spaghetti and sauces and cheese that does not melt.. and hot dogs that don't taste like hotdogs. It's the same in the US, we have a tiny Asian Food section that doesn't really count as "ingredients for all the meals of Asia". Just cans of Thai brand coconut milk, curry paste, a few rice noodles.. maybe a fish sauce.. and then you have to get creative with what you can make with just that. We have the meats for sure, but Lotus and Big C didn't seem to carry ground beef :(
