I first watched this series about 8 or 10 years ago and fell head over heels for it from the music, especially the opening, characters, and plot that takes many twists and turns. There's not much I didn't like about it, so to say the least, one of my favourite videos you've ever done.

The fact that Outlaw Star is considered underrated has merit sadly given that the other two series got movies, a live-action adaptation (for better or worse) with Bebop and a remake/reboot with Trigun. And honestly I think Outlaw Star stands out as not having those for they wouldtarnish what it brought to the table of nostalgia & late-90's/early 2000's Toonami

I saw Outlaw Star when I was a kid, back when it first was on Toonami and after all these years, it's risen to be my favorite anime. I've seen close to 600 different animes and none of them have the style and heart of this show. The character and setting stand out among other casts and locations and the music is excellent. This may not be the best written or animated anime of all time but it definitely has more heart than most and is fun and rewatchable more than any anime series I've seen. Nice review and thanks for giving this underrated classic some modern screen time!

OutlawStar is my favorite anime ever. It's one of the few shows where I genuinely have fun watching. I can feel the adventure throughout the series and the crew are all likable in their own way. Aisha is my fave btw (shout out to Lenore Zann, the VA of Aisha and Rogue from the 90s show). The character design, the music, the gorgeous backgrounds, etc. are all make up a great show. Wish it would've gotten another season.

This was the show that got me back into anime 11 years ago when my own PTSD finally couldn't be ignored. It is my favorite western as a whole, not just space westerns. Gene strikes a balance between tortured soul, comically lecherous pervert, and renegade with a heart of gold.

I love how you often you cover classic anime that isn’t “relevant” or a “pillar.” Most anitubers will only talk about the classic anime that have been ongoing in some form to the modern day because it’s what will reach the widest audience. But you cover even the anime that doesn’t catch on with newer or casual otaku. It’s a nice change of pace and really helps encourage me personally to get into series like this that I haven’t looked into closely and don’t see a whole lot.
That being said, you should read Lone Wolf and Cub! It’s awesome!

I caught Outlaw Star pretty randomly on Toonami when it had a rerun a few years back and my first ep was that duel focused one. And man did it fuckin hook me. Seeing the MC so subtlety and sometimes not so subtlety panicked over the upcoming fight was a great change of pace from the run-of-the-mill "I got this shit in the bag" facade you see so often. What really got me was Gene's interaction with Melfina; when he caught himself about to use her for momentary release, as an escape, just as he had countless women before despite him promising her so much more - that definitely hit me hard that late night. Incredibly underrated show.

I watched bits and pieces of it as a kid but. I don't think I paid too much attention to Outlaw Star as I did other Anime in my Youth. (I can't help but wonder how they aired this on a 'kids'
network. I'm grateful the 'Adult' Toonami was able to Air it unedited!) One Anime I did saw when I very young that I'd want RLR to talk about would be the 90's fantasy 'The Slayers'.
Pretty much Slayers was my initial introduction to the whole fantasy genre and 'damn' what an introduction! While I only saw S1 as a young kid the last 2 volumes at a slightly later
point (Can't believe they slapped a 3+rating on V7. That 'certain' death scene looks like it could've been in Berserk almost!) I loved that not only was it very funny, it was also edgy and
could actual get really freakin' scary in places. Like 'slight spoiler' look at the first final boss Ruby-eyed Shabranigdo and compare his appearance to Noferatu Zodd. This guy was
in a show that was 'deemed' for a Younger Audience! I loved it. It was a awesome, hilarious, scary show that we'd use to play on stereo with me and my sis up on a couch watching
it late at night! Pretty much Slayers, Orphen (Can't believe how bad that reboot was.) and Magic Knight Rayearth was my fantasy anime golden trio as a youth and they're all Underrated
in there each own way. I just can't believe they don't talk about Slayers, at all when this was essentially a better D&D cartoon than the actual D&D cartoons!

I have no clue why I have never watched this show, especially as I used to tune in for Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, and all those iconic show back in the late 90s and early 2000s. Perhaps it was not broadcast in my home country. I suppose I should cut some time for this retro trip.

I love Outlaw Star, but I have to say, a lot of the slice of life episodes in which they are just doing day to day stuff to get money and meander about, kind of bored me. But, the episodes that push the plot along are fantastic. All of the characters are great. Everyone feels unique and like they have their own goals and ambitions.
The way the show blends sci-fi, western, and supernatural never felt too forced. the world felt natural, and i love how so much of the tech feels like realistic, in that most of it doesnt stay around that long. Special ammunition, weapons for the ship, shields and robot dogs are not part of a characters identity. They are making their won way in the world, buy things, and use them when they feel appropriate. And the Galactic Ley Line actually lives up to the hype of being a galactic treasure, which is massive. So many times the big treasure of a story doesnt live up to the hype.
I definitely felt sad for the younger McDougel. He cared for Melfina, but he was totally controlling and a little unstable. I found it interesting that by the end, the older McDougel started to go down the cyborg route like his younger brother did much earlier. Jim Hawking never knowing the girl he liked was actually a pirated and that she died was pretty tragic as well.
I felt the story got back on track with the duel episode. The lieutenants of the big bad were introduced, and the stakes were raised. They all wouldve died if he didnt fake losing, leaving Gene feeling like he only won by luck. Both showing thats actually a talent of his (whether by random chance, or making his own luck, as it were), and that he really was lucky that the pirate wanted to fake his death.
So many great things to say, but to summarize, Outlaw Star is a great character driven show, with a non-formulaic story, and blends many different elements naturally

There’s hardly any manga set in space now, the only one I’m currently reading is Edens Zero, which I love. I wish more people would read it, the story gets so good after vol 10, it’s my second favourite ongoing Shonan after DanDaDan.

As much as I loved this show as a kid, and continue to love it in my own way, so much in fact that certain elements of it served as inspiration for the novel trilogy im currently writing, I can't but feel that "wasted potential" is the perfect way to describe this show in a nutshell.
It has interesting concepts, wonderful characters, amazing aesthetic, and the worldbuilding is masterful.... but the plot itself? It suffers considerably, and while it starts off strong, it loses momentum fast, and the ending arc, especially without a follow-up season to expound upon where it left off, just feels hollow snd unsatisfying.
That said, it deserves a continuation or even a PROPER reboot/remake to flesh out the better aspects and iron out the iffy bits. Id be ALL for that.
