When I spar with longswords my left hand thumb always seems to get hit. It would become a meme if I can get back to sparring with my local ARMA group. ARMA is Association of Renaissance Martial Arts. My local group mainly studies Meyer (German Longsword) and will occasionally do other things like spears and other polearms.
@@ZenDragonRUclipsChannel Yes sir, and I'm glad I can follow your martials arts journey on here. It's quite enlightening. I still remember that old video you had on Snake Style. I was able to learn how those movements worked because of that vid and was able to apply it in sparring a few times. I haven't mastered it yet, but I can do a bit of trapping with Snake Style in boxing gloves. Also, interesting thing HEMA taught me is that all swords have the same techniques in them, just done slightly differently depending on the specific sword. You got great vids man and I wish you the best of luck!
Hey, fellow HEMAist here! About your thumb, I take it you are left-handed then? Or atleast using a left handed grip. When I started HEMA I had the same issue, and it mainly came from two things: 1) Not holding the sword in a proper handshake grip. This may seem basic, but once I started looking at recorded material of mine, I noticed that the longer the tournament progresses, and the more tired I got, the worse my grip became. And when you use the sword in a sword of two handed hammer grip, you don’t get the optimal protection from the crossguard, which might lead to a lot of thumb hits. 2) Something which costed me a lot of blue thumbs, is the fact I hung out in a thumb grip for way too long in positions I shouldn’t be doing it. At the time I just learned about thumb grips and meisterhauen, so naturally I tried to do them as often as possible. Keeping the them on the flat/schilt all the time was the easiest way of getting it crushed by a hit that would normally be caught by the schilt or crossguard. Since then I learned to transition better and smoother, so that I don’t get my thumb nearly broken every so often (even with those darn spes lobster gloves haha). I also made it a habit, but this depends on preference, and the sword you use, to hold my grip further down, but then again, I use this beast of a Pavel Moc sword so I have the space to do that... standard Regenyeis just barely fit my hands, which is also why Im not a big fan. There is also another reason you might get hand hits alot, and that is if you move your hands before your blade. To mitigate this you can push with the right hand and pull with the left while you cut, but this is all preference and its just what I find helpful.
pretty cool to see some HEMA on the channel! I missed this one. It would be cool to see you two spar with these weapon setups. Did I hear you say you are a farmer now?
Nope, I’m not if you mean in the outro, the word was father :p yea HEMA sparring would be cool, aside from the recent Self Defense Sparring video, all my uploads have been from pre December 2020 (some from summer of 2020 even)... not a lot of time or training opportunities here during lockdown
@@ZenDragonRUclipsChannel ah gotcha I thought I heard farmer but father makes sense. Hopefully the pandemic ends soon so you can create more awesome content
Okay..I think this needs to be re-titled. Its a person using a Chinese Dao who is not a Kung Fu practitioner sparring someone with HEMA skills. Swap in a real Kung Fu person and give him the Chinese rattan shield with his broadsword to balance both sides and then it can be a discussion of Kung Fu vs HEMA. You could have given the Dao guy any cultural type of sword other than European and the results would be the same.
Just because I'm not specialised in dao. I learned some dao but not dao and shield doesn't mean I am not a Kung Fu practitioner. I trained for 9 years to earn black sash (yes, I know traditionally there's not belt rankings in Kung Fu), I have tested my Kung Fu animal style sparring vs various stylists in sparring and fought amateur fights blending Kung Fu kicks with boxing.... the point, is I never claimed to be an expert, but I am indeed a Kung Fu practitioner. You may have trained more with the dao, but that doesn't mean I have zero skills with it and that I don't have Kung Fu skills in general.
"...and the art of the, ninja" Man, if this guys done half the stuff listed in the shoninki, he's probably ready to take on Bear Grills' survival skills lol
As a HEMA student it hurt to see you using the European tools like that. First, you have a longsword meaning it's for two handed use. A hand and a half sword could be fine with a shield but you still generally want to use it with two hands. Secondly, that's not how you use a shield in HEMA. You keep it stretched out all the way not with your arm bent, that way it covers your body and keeps distance that the enemy's weapon has to travel. Also, had that been an arming sword which is what you really want to use with a shield or buckler, you strike with the hand behind the shield. The cross guard makes it extremely easy to snipe the hand, so one of the main purposes of the shield is to protect your hand. I know you're just applying your martial arts to the HEMA equipment, but it's much better to have an actual HEMA person come in and explain/demonstrate how everything is used and THEN see how you could apply it rather than just getting the stuff and trying to make it up as you go along.
Actually the technique I showed works just fine, I done it in sparring several times, so don't be locked in on your way of doing things. Also my sword is a Arming sword and a longsword, because I cut the hilt so it's shorter and I have two pommels. And about the shield, it weighs probably over 3 kg so you don't wanna have your arm stretched out all the time, it will hurt your arm and shoulder and make.you tired very fast.
On Instagram (instagram.com/Zen_Dragon_Martial_Arts) there's 2 recent clips of sparring in kickboxing and boxing. I've got several empty handed sparring videos with us that I've yet to upload, but the best ones are 2 weapon sparring videos, one with nunchaku vs stick and one where it's double sticks for both of us.
It is not a buckler, it is a real shield. A buckler is much smaller and I said the sword is a knights swords, but yes it would have been called an Arming sword.
It's a shield not a buckler, buckler's are much smaller. What he has is jut a small shield. And he is using a longsword he's just using it improperly by using it in one hand instead of two. The grip is too long to be a hand and a half sword plus I just recognize it as the Red Dragon synthetic longsword so it's just a full longsword.
@@matthewcooper4248 actually it was a longsword but i cut some of the tip because I was always hitting the silling in my apartment, I also made the hilt shorter so I could use it as a Arming sword. You know I have to pommels, a short one and a long one 😉 two swords in one 😁
