This U-Tube saved my life. Changed batteries on three smoke alarm, they would not stop chirping. After hysteria, and two very scared dogs howling, I found this site.......all is well! Amen......
Sapphira as a last resort when everything else failed try replacing the alarm in case it either didn't last 10 years according to the manufacture, or it failed before its time. I am a electronic technologist and I know for a fact that not all electronics from China, or Mexico is perfect. In other words there is a such thing as component failure due to design flaw ,or a defective component . My dog doesn't like the chirp either or when I test them she gets excited and scared too.
delirious and exhausted, I found your video and did everything accordingly. However, I was not prepared for the 15 seconds the alarm would go off while holding the button down. My ears are still ringing lol and I'm also kinda concerned as to why my roommates didn't come running out of their rooms when it went off... Besides that, I have no more beeping and can go back to sleep! :D Thank you kind sir.
In the 80's when I lived(grew up in small town country), The old man that owned his auto salvage yard had M-80 fire works taped to his house walls. He said if there was a fire they would wake him up"... lol
That damn annoying noise when is dark in your room and you are trying to sleep. I pulled out the device along with the whole cable that connected it. I couldn't take it any more.
I have the same Firex Kidde smoke alarms in my home just like the video. Did everything mentioned in this video and so far after an hour, it's been quiet. I reset the button for about 45-60 seconds, and used compressed air to blow out all the dust. Got a brand new 9v battery, and so far all good. Also, changed out 4 alarms with new batteries and did the same for all of them. Still gotta get the 4 down stairs which will be taken care of in the morning. I followed one of the comments on here as to change out all the batteries to new ones if they were the Firex Kidde alarms since they were also linked to my home alarm system. Great advise by member " packsplace ". Thanks everyone. SUBSCRIBED !! ~ Roger
Kudos to you, AdamDIY! This is quite essential and something every homeowner should know when maintaining their home's smoke detectors. I have two smoke detectors in my home and sometimes they'll chirp out of nowhere, despite having a fresh nine-volt battery, and resetting the devices!
I have 13 smoke detectors in my house which has the worst acoustics on the planet. I can never tell where the noise is coming from. I’m tempted to take my chances with the housefire
I rarely comment on RUclips videos but I have to take the time out to say thank you. I barely slept last night because of this chirping. This video put an end to that misery
Thank you so much!!! This was so helpful. My smoke alarm has been chirping on and off for the past 3 weeks. I changed the battery but that didn't help. It kept waking me up at wee hours of the morning. I just tried your suggestion and it worked. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!
Thanks for the help AdamDIY. Of course one started beeping at 3am just like you said. Problem is I had already replaced batteries in all five upstairs detectors at 11pm on the night before. So now I'll try your fix to see if it stops this infernal sh!t from happening tonight.
Thanks for that. It's 3:10AM right now and my fire alarm kept beeping 4 times intermittently and I have been in here for like an hour trying to get it to stop. (I couldn't figure out how to unplug it from the ceiling.) but I got it! Now to get a new battery!
is there a wire I can just cut? I'm sick of this shitty thing squawking all the time what happened to just checking it monthly to see if the battery is good?
Hey , very useful tips. What is the air compressor device you have used which is portable and manual . Can you please share the link . Thanks and appreciate your help
I've tried everything you said in the video, and my upstairs one sounded just like yours and reset itself, and the blinking light turned green. But the downstairs one is still blinking red, and it didn't make the dying sound when I pushed the button to reset it. I'm sorry to sound stupid, but I'm very unhandy with house issues, although I'm trying to learn! Does this mean the downstairs smoke detector is defective or needs to be replaced? I bought them both new when I purchased the house in 2014, so they're only about a year and a half old. Thanks!
Just last night at least one detector went off but they are hard wired and look like the one in the video. i think they are common builder grade. It sounded for about 5 seconds and stopped. About two hours later it did it again and it was more than one detector. It sounded for about 5 seconds and stopped. This is not the chirp that tells you the battery is low. They are 11 years old. Do you think it may be dust? Thanks!
Yep, I have 2 Kidde Firex Smoke Alarms (110VAC) from 2015. I believe all of these manufacturers tell owners to keep them cleaned. These 2 are ultra sensitive it seems. After a period of time, they will begin to alarm for no reason and they are kept in low dust environments. I had already discovered blowing them out with compressed air solved the problem, so your video is great info.
yes been about 3 hours, hammer agree! the whole house is chirping .....or at least about 5-6 of them. I will try what you suggest but not sure how to disconnect the connector.....it would not come off of my Firex unit (dont want to break it).
Go, Adam! Don't know if it was the holding down the test button. Or the blowing all around the device. Or maybe sticking in the battery more firmly. But it worked: No more chirp!
I have a kidde 0976 . does a smoke detector have any capabilities of picking up carbon monoxide ? I know they sell devices for smoke and carbon monoxide . I have the experience of smoke detectors that kept chirping every once in awhile and which I replaced with brand new ones in the new smoke detectors did the same thing , it must be something in the house it didn't like .
Thx for this. I have one exactly like you used in the video. I've replaced the battery, but can't close the cover. It's not the battery - took that out and still can't close the cover. Is there some trick that I'm missing, or something I need to hold down?
Couldn't figure out the problem unit so I pulled all six and removed batteries (also hard wired) and placed in the shed. May reinstall when I sell the house, mean while one plug in wall unit in / by my bedroom will suffice. Thanks for vid.
Do we need to turn off the main breaker before unplugging the unit from the wall? I took the battery out of my unit and it still beeped, it made a really small chirp then a really loud beep. I think that it is barely getting power from the wall because it seems very flimsily attached. When I went to take the battery out, I noticed that it was loosely on the wall and the light went off with movement of the unit with or without a battery inside. If I move the unit the light will come back on and the unit may possibly beep again. Right now it's quiet, so I'm not touching that thing until I get a new battery. That noise drove my crazy. Always seems to happen at the worse possible time. There may be dust in there , but I don't want to remove the unit until I know if I should shut off the power first before taking it down to clean it.
Thank you for short but informative video. It helped! When alarm is beeping, last thing what I want is to watch 30-min. video (the other, not yours). Problem solved!
Good video, but what I wanted to find out is how you got the thing disassembled as I see you have done in the video. I want to remove the cover piece (not the twist lock mount). I'm having trouble with that and don't want to break it.
Thank you geez Louise I didn't know how to stop the beeping I changed the battery but the dreaded beeping didn't know you had to do extra stuff to the smoke detector thank you for the video
Thank you! I'm on lockdown due to the coronavirus, and now my effing alarm is beeping! Thank God for the internet, RUclips, and this video! You saved the day!
This alarm is either a fire or carbon dioxide and it's been chirping for about 10 years or more. It's a battery and electric and I'm not an electrician so I never messed with it does this apply to electric alarms as well?
i do property maintenance and i asked one client does the beeping not bother them. they said, after 2 years of beeping we dont hear it anymore. too tight to buy a battery in a house with 3 kids
The best way,is take remove the smoke alarm, relax and enjoy a cigarette, and watch your best friends face while you are burning it in the garden, while smiling with cup of tea and ciggies in hand, what would you do to find a way to relax? lmao
Helpful because I removed the battery and the chirping continued. People, don't forget to write the date installed in the place marked. We moved into a home and previous owner didn't write any information on it. We'll just replace it.
ok, mine are hardwire only. and turns out that they are chirping due to the expiration date. and I don't have a problem with buying the new ones... but I've not been able to work due to an injury. and I cannot afford the $170 for the 3 pack right this minute. is there a way to reset it or get it to stop giving this warning for a few weeks until I can afford to buy the news ones? I wish it gave a pre-warning of the coming expiration of these.. ie: Chirps to alert that they are due in a month or a few weeks. to prepare better for it.
What about if the wired smoke alarm/carbon monoxide alarm is around it's end of life term and it's making periodically the two chirp noises? Is there a way to reset the unit?
I thought you were going to disassemble the device. But I found the 3 clips on the top panel. After that it was just "don't break it." Way of dissembling and cleaning the disc surfaces. Kudos on that part or I would of cleaned the whole thing (i did clean the whole interior anyway
Worked for a whole day and then now I get the 3 beeps again. Replaced one unit but then another one started doing it. All these 6 detectors were installed in a new addition brand new 3 months ago, I can't believe they'd be at the end of their usable life already and need to all be replaced after just 3 months.
I already used compressed air since it has motherboard similar to PC, I also used electronics cleaner (CRC brand or similar), one of my detectors, it fixed issue for good. I never tried re-setting it, good ideas!
OMG, it worked!!! Tried it once and it didnt work then second time i put screwdriver across all 3 contacts to help drain capacitors and just vacuumed all the vent holes.... its been killin me that this stupid thing was smarter than me... keep trying if it fights you 😎
Smoke detector stopped beeping after I drained the battery. Presumably reset, but after I re-attached with new battery, it started chirping periodically again. Any other fix short of replacing the whole unit?

Why do these things seem to go off at 3.20 am!thank you for restoring my sleep. New batteries in the morning :) x
Seems to have worked perfectly, thank you! One point to make, there will be chirps from the other units, as they re-synch up with each other!
You saved my good night sleep. 3:30 am and the damn thing decides to screech the sound of its people. Thank you!

Make sure the battery is set in it's slot firmly. The door will not shut unless the battery is in there. I have the same ones as well.
Thanks it worked.. I held them both down for 15 seconds and they both stop the noise 🙌🏽
Does the chirping refer to only that unit? Or can it chip if another unit has the dust issue? Or would that other unit be chirping directly?

Do I have to take it off the ceiling to do the 15-second test? It's on a 25-foot ceiling, and a scary experience trying to remove it.
Hi How do you take the top of the detector off where you can see the inside?
Do we need to turn off the main breaker before unplugging the unit from the wall? I took the battery out of my unit and it still beeped, it made a really small chirp then a really loud beep.
