You're right. It isn't your Grandfathers' mine. It will be a state of the art facility with strict erosion and wastewater treatment guidelines that will minimize impact.
Did you listen to this though? It’s not about mining in general, or the local gov. Its about the negative affects this particular mining venture would pose (due to the specific process involved) for many years to come. The gentleman clearly stated the various mining operations that effectively function in the UP. It’s about the sulfide mining process involved at this particular operation that would have very adverse affects for literally thousands of years to come.
And there's nothing to say, even with a clean-up plan, that something won't go wrong. Look at what has happened before. 😒 🙄 They do as little as possible to clean up & some try to cover up too!
@Priscilla F you obviously have no clue how highly regulated the mining industry is. I bet you belive in or own an electric vehicle...how do you think they get the minerals needed for the batteries on one or phones, tools, and laptops,?
@andywhite4172 finally someone that I can agree with. I mean, since we have the copper mine in the UP coal mine also, so what is the different with Gold. But hey let's destroy mining batteries bc it doesn't happen here.
Response to COMMENTS about "what if?" Do your scientific research, you sit on the sidelines and think more about the short term money than you do about the potential 40 million people who will be affected down river and into the Great Lakes. The money will come and go, the residual mine wastes last forever. Educate yourself. Dale Burie, Coalition to SAVE the Menominee River, Inc.
lol these folks who are always screaming about "not in my backyard" seem to ignore the fact its always going to be in someone's backyard - they act like the local folks don't need jobs or the uptick in the economy a company brings - being worried about "what if" is a foolish notion - may as well vote against a new grocery store because you know "what if" it increases traffic or it increases crime or it increases property taxes the list of "what ifs" can be applied to anything. how about getting these companies to agree to a new set of rules before the game starts -
They are not 'what ifs' - they are facts. Nice that you put greed above the health of humans and our natural resources. Which company are you a shill for? Your grocery store analogy fails and is you trying to compare apples to rocket ships.
It’s not a “what if”. The adverse affects stated by the gentleman in this video are a guaranteed outcome of the sulfide mining process. Not to mention the very real downstream pollution that would effect the entirety of Michigan and the great lakes region. Check the population and employment numbers of this particular area/region - there isn’t a lack jobs or even a population to fulfill hypothetical job positions. Your argument may very well be logical and in touch to many other “not in my back yard” situations, but it really lacks understanding and context when applied here.
I'll take the mine if my neighbors don't resist. I can't afford Security Services nor higher taxes let alone much food. (I've already had things stolen from me.) We got Wally Worlds + close by to get water from.
These people want to scare others about mining ⛏ when in reality all the minerals we humans have have been trough mining and we still living . Just stop the nonsense and let that company create jobs
Dear Creator, please protect the waters of life!❤
NO TO THE GREEDY EXTRACTION ECONOMY - IT'S UNSUSTAINABLE!

That's right and never did an oil pipeline ever leak oil in Michigan!
Obviously nobody knows that mines must reclamate the area and there must be a plan in place prior to start how not to effect the local environmental

@Brian Lacey no it wouldn't or they'd never get government approval

The money goes into the hands of super rich who don't give a d*mn about those affected.
