  • This video shows how to do a transmission pan drop, filter and fluid change for the 6L50 6 Speed Transmission on the 2016-2020 GMC Canyon & Chevy Colorado w/ the 2.8 LWN Duramax, or the 2015-2016 models w/ V6 gas engine. Later gas engine models switched to the 8 speed transmission.

    Thank you for the video.
    However the reason your trans didn't take 6+ quarts is because you didn't have the truck running while pulling the check plug per the instructions on the sticker. When the truck is running oil stays sucked up in the trans. Also, be sure to shift it thru the gears upon start up before checking the oil level.

    I do DiY most of the time on my Chev DURAMAX 2.8 LTZ 2016 too (Assembled at GM_Rayong, Thailand). Its transmission box code is 6BNA).
    The filter O ring can be pulled out via a 2 prong bent out 92° or so at the tips steel spring wire of sufficient thickness.
    I level the pan instead of the vehicle and have the engine running to recommended temp. before opening the level plug after refill.
    BTW, I'm more comfortable with the metric system 😊

    Thanks for putting this up, I'm at 114k and my trans has just started doing some weird in n out of gear if I stop slightly quickly at low speed.
    Last fluid was at 85k so it's a bit early but hopefully it's nothing too serious

    What are the differences between the 7Bna you have and the 8Bna I have in my 2018 zr2 diese? Just curious, about to change my fluid.

    It you let it stop draining while the engine was not running, it is under filled. Your fluid is low.

    Your supposed to check the level with the engine running (as it shows at 3:27 on the label). Pan drop takes 6 3/4 quarts, your running it 2 quarts low.

      If you watch to the end of the video, I do check it with it running, on a level surface.

      So do you get your truck level or do you have to get your pan level when checking fluid

      With the truck running, did you put it on drive and reverse to get the oil through the filter and such before you do another fluid level check?

      By the way, great informative video. I owned a 2006 Colorado before and I am very familiar with this process that I’ve done like 4 or 5 times before. So now I own a Colorado diesel and it is a learning curve now. I love the truck, I will do anything to keep the truck in a great shape. My old Colorado had a dip stick inside the engine compartment for the transmission fluid check and fill and I was shocked this truck doesn’t have one. Again, thanks so much.

    what did you use to pump in the oil?

      A hand transfer pump. I got mine off of amazon but I've seen them at auto-parts stores.

    I just bought a similar truck- 2015 GMC Canyon 4x4 with the 3.6 motor tho. I think it’s the same transmission. My concern is the truck has 118k miles and I have zero service history. I’ve seen a few transmissions need rebuilds when changing the fluid, but those were older vehicles. Should I be concerned about dropping the pan and changing that fluid and filter?

      That I can't say for sure. I know I previously had a 2004 Silverado with the 6.6 and Allison transmission with 160k on it and no service history so I took a gamble and did the same procedure with that truck as I did with this Canyon. I figured If I made it 1000k miles after the pan drop/ fluid change then I was good. I think I went 10k before selling the truck.
      But, that was a total different animal with a heavy duty transmission. This transmission? Could be an even bigger gamble. What would I do personally? I think I would do it. I would drop the pan, change the filter, then refill the fluid. Drive it around, get it all warm and fluid circulated and then drain/ suck the fluid out again and refill with the hope of getting as much of that old fluid out. And possibly do it a third time.
      I wasn't sure how it worked, doing the double or triple drain, but someone more intelligent said that in doing so, yes you're pulling some of the new fluid you just put in, back out, but you also are getting a percentage of the old fluid. Can't remember what percent you should have gotten out but I liked the pan drop idea better than the forced way of the flush machine.
      Sorry, not the best answer but hope that kind of helps...

    hey, curious where did you order a new transmission pan mounting bolt? I Did the same thing you did using a torque wrench to get it to spec torque but busted the bolt. So been hunting the internet but can not seem to find a single bolt. thanks man hope to hear back

      Haven't been able to locate one yet. I have run it without that bolt. I've kept an eye on it and it hasn't lost any fluid, so it's "fine" for now. It's got about 12k miles on it since it was changed, the fluid I mean.

    What is the torque spec for the level check plug?

      I don't have anything on that. However, it is on the top side, and not holding back anything (not like a lug nut). So snug with a wrench/ ratchet is good IMO.

      It's not much. On my 8 speed it's only 80 inch/lbs. Should be similar on the 6 speed.
