It is a VIP concert for the 5th anniversary of the Belgian BRT TV channel (Belgium Flemish Radio and Television) The public is filtered for the TV broadcast, which allows having a document of good quality, correctly filmed with a good sound.
That option was better musically, than to see riots and fights filmed by German TV.
Also, to answer some people's questions regarding the instrumental "Rudy's Rock", when the bassist stops playing, the sound of the bass does not stop to play ??? ...🤔
I think it's Franny Beecher who takes over, we see it at 5:42, I'm a bass player and I can say that Al doesn't have the level to play the walkin' bass that we hear, but Franny yes.
But if you look at Franny Beecher's hands, it matches with the walkin' bass speed at 9:35
At 9:39 we can clearly see the guitarist doing the bass line.
This can be heard clearly in the headphones.
And also notice Franny's last chord at the end of the song, there is no treble, only a bass sound 10:20, then at the end of the song he turns his amp back to his normal setting.
And the rhythm guitar, that we hear when Franny plays bass, is provided by Billy Williamson.
Who only plays the chords without sliding on his steel guitar.
This is just my opinion, Greetings, Ben 😉

History has been unkind to Bill Haley and His Comets - they were considered 'old men' once Elvis came along but they kicked the doors open for all that followed. And as a live act they were sensational - god, could they play!

Try as some might to negate the truth that Bill Haley was to havethe first hit Rock n Roll record, he was also the one that gave it's foundation of upbeat and pulsating dance songs with a little entertainment, a pumping and driving beat, sax solos that goes into orbit, and bass and drums that pound out insistent and frenetic beats. Oh and the first international Rock n Roll SUPERSTAR!

Firstly, because it's Belgium in 1958. A very Catholic country. Secondly, because rock n'roll was an American music and hadn't been heard in Europe previously and thirdly because it probably cost more to attend than most people in Brussels could afford.

Great concert!. I'm a Trini Lopez fan & there is a TV show from early February 1964 out on dvd for many years of him & his Trio, which starts with his flight arriving in Brussels, then an airport interview & finally the studio show with enthusiastic audience. I think this was his first or second time in Belgium,I know he had been in Holland mid-late 1963 & possibly too Belgium @ same time in any case, the airport interviewer welcomes him to Belgium, quote " For the first time" Peace out

I didn't know Bill Haley played upright bass & slapping it. I couldn't believe my eyes what I was seeing. On the Milton Berle show in 1955 Bill Haley is playing the lead guitar solo on Rock Around The Clock. Bill Haley gets more & more interesting & his story needs to be told in a movie. They need to do a movie on him & most likely a foreign country, he was more popular in other countries. The US forgot him. He started it all.

Haley was an accomplished bassist and taught the Comets original bass player Marshall Lytle the finer points of slap bass.
As for their 1955 Berle appearance, RATC is a lip synch.
Danny Cedrone, d.6/1954 played the iconic lead on the record which was recorded 4/12/1954 and that is what you hear on the Berle clip.
After Cedrone's passing, Haley did not immediately employ a lead player for live work.
There are no known films or live recordings of Cedrone with Haley.
Later in 1955, Frank( Frannie)Beecher was hired to play lead guitar and remained with Haley until 1960.
Beecher's first recording with Haley was "Shake Rattle and Roll" and does the high pitched voice at the beginning of "See You Later Alligator", seen here and also did that voice on Haley's cover of "Rip It Up".
The band as you see it here is more or less "The Comets" as they were seen in live performance after 1955. Only Haley, Johnny Grande, piano and Billy Williamson, steel guitar remained from the line up that recorded "RATC" in 1954.
Haley, Grande and Williamson were the original members of "The Comets", formerly "The Saddlemen" which was formed c.1952 and were full partners in "The Comets", the other players being salaried.
The last living member of "The Comets" as of 4/2020 is Joey Ambrosia (Ambrose) who played the sax lead on RATC in 1954.
In 1955, Ambrosia, Marshall Lytle, and Dick Richards(drums)left after money disputes to form The Jodimars, a contraction of their first names JOey, DIck, MARS.
Ambrosia, with Lytle, Richards, Grande and Frank Beecher toured as The Comets into the 21st century.
One of the bass players, Al Rex, had the prescience to trademark the band name , " The Comets" and after Haley's passing in 1982, fielded various iterations of the group though not with any 1950's era players.
This film shows the band and it's performance set in full.
By 1958, Haley was no longer at the top tier of US Rock acts but thanks to a rabid following in Europe and particularly the UK, was able to tour constantly as a star attraction. They went on to do films in Germany and in Mexico which became Haley's ex-pat home base due to tax problems in the US.
In Mexico and much of South America, Haley continued to release records and maintain star status well into the mid 1960's.
Throughout the 1970's he was still touring Europe and was able to resolve his US tax issues, allowing him to return to American stages but only as an "Oldies" act, while his European shows were still promoted at top levels
Towards the end of his life, he appeared at a Royal Command performance for Queen Elizabeth who had been a fan in the 1950's.
Haley's momentous arrival in England in 1956 which roughly coincided with his diminished impact in the US, is generally regarded as Rock's "Big Bang" for UK fans and was directly responsible influencing many of the first wave of the "British Invasion" acts in the 1960's, almost all of which began their careers in the post-1956 period.
Elsewhere on YT, there are postings of one of his West German shows,c.1958 and a Paris Olympia show from the same time.
To see the band that recorded "RATC" (without Cedrone), there are two clips from a 1955 Universal short, one which features "Straight Jacket" an early Essex release, but specifically recorded for the film.
There are also various postings of his 1950's US TV appearances on "The Ed Sullivan Show", "Atlantic City Holiday", "The Ray Bolger Show", "Dick Clark's Beechnut Show," the afore mentioned "Buick Berle Show" from '55 and also German movie clips, UK TV, the c.'79 Royal Command performance, Mexican TV appearances into the 1960's and clips from his 1950's US films for Columbia.

@@patersondave44 Yes it was lip synched it's the actual record but even so Bill Haley knew his way around

@@pjriverdale8461 Very informative comment on Bill Haley & his Comets. Lots of floating
sattelite members that worked with Haley. I heard there were as many as 150 players in the Comets /w Haley thru the years. On the Milton Berle show in '55 the line up looks like the ones on the actual recording in '54 of
Rock Around the Clock except Danny Cedrone he was never in the band only a session player hired & paid
by Bill Haley himself during this uncertain period he wasn't sure if he needed a lead guitarist. So he played the lead himself on the Berle show. The story I heard was it was a long 3 hr session Danny Cedrone did for Haley
& his Comets & afterwards as he was driving home he stopped at a Deli to buy a roast beef sandwich as he exited the Deli he fell down a long flight of stairs to his death. He never knew how iconic & important his
famous guitar solo on Rock Around the Clock became........he first played that solo on Rock the Joint in 1951 w/ Bill Haley's Saddlemen.

    • @pjriverdale8461
      @pjriverdale8461 4 года назад +3

@@patersondave44 The Berle show is a lipsynch.
The slightly later Sullivan and Bolger appearances are the first TV clips with the recently hired Beecher on guitar and are live performances.
On the '55 Sullivan Show, Beecher is playing his Archtop Epiphone guitar, one more associated with jazz as Beecher had formerly been with Benny Goodman.
By the time of this clip, the band was endorsed by Gibson( since '56) with Haley,Beecher and Williamson using Gibson guitars and amps.
Other guitarists on Haley's Essex and Holiday releases besides Danny Cedrone were Bob Scaltrito and Art Ryerson.

A real rare and nice document of this vintage 50s show. The Belgians were smart enough to record great artists like Chuck Berry also. Shame on the dead-flat audience - are they coming to see a museum?

It's is a VIP concert for the 5th anniversary of the Belgian BRT TV channel , the public is filtered for the TV broadcast , which allows to have a document of good quality, correctly filmed with a good sound.
That option was better musically , than to see riots and fights filmed by German TV.😉

The drumming is reminiscent of Earl Palmer…playing all the rhythms with both sticks on the snare. Franny on the black Les Paul Custom…the first guitar god!

Brilliant - the guy in the evening suit looked very solemn then dug it. I heard he grew his hair (what he had) and dropped out - way out.

What would Britain be without Bill Haley and His Comets until 1956 tour ? There would be no Beatles,Rolling Stones,Dave Clark Five, Monkees,etc.,etc.! Herr Michael Rothweiler.
