The city of the dreaming books is by a German author. It was really popular in Germany when it came out 10+ years ago. Its so funny to see it being promoted so much later in the US. You can definitely read this as a stand alone. The books he published prior take place in the same universe but focus on completely different characters. There is sometimes cross referencing but it doesn't take that much away to miss that. I really liked the book at the time.. its a very weird funny, sometimes childlike phantasy novel that takes place in a city where everything is about books. He also does the illustrations as he drew comics and animation movies before writing that book. The booklings (if that will actually be their name in English) are by far my most favourite fictional creatures ever. It is a stand alone novel but Moers wrote a follow up based on the success of the first one.. you can ignore that one but I think you will enjoy the dreaming books for sure ;). If you wanted to read other books by him after that one I'd recommend the 13.5 lives of Capitain Bluebear Enjoy :)

I'm going back to New York this September (for the second time) and watching your vlog bring so much memories. In my first trip, I visited the same Barnes & Nobles, the same bagel place, and also the Met... but didn't visited "Books are Magic" so I'm adding it to me to-do list. I remember beeing equally overwhelmed by the variety and quantity of books in this giant Barnes and Noble and I was so tempted to buy many books but because English is not my mother tongue (I'm French), I'm always scared to read English language books because sometimes the writing is too complex, making me read 3 times each sentence to understand. On the other hand, so many great books never get a French translation (or many years later) so I am always torn... I finally found an author that I really love (Grady Hendrix): his books are super easy to read for me.
ohhh I've listened to the audiobook of I'm glad my mom died and GOOD GODESS I was definitely impacted by it. it's the type of book that touched some scars and made me cry, and I cannot forget it, it's just forged in my mind now
