I’d like to say that Maragret is very talented, and she has a great voice. I was amused to hear her almost bottom out when she went down below her alto range, but hell that’s cool too. I hear her doing old Dan Hicks and The Hot Licks tunes, or maybe some Billie holiday stuff. She has that kind of slinky, sardonic, slightly bemused tonal quality

I'm a big fan of Ms.Glaspy' and your guitar sounded pretty good as well. I would consider one as an acoustic for sure.

I can’t think of a better way to make a guitar sound good.

A working man's guitar with a lawyer's pricetag. If you up to spending 2k for this, save some more and have your own personal instrument made by a local luthier instead of falling for this, fair is fair, bit of very clever marketing.

Ah, these are mostly handmade by arguably the best luthier shop in the business, And they are half price or far less, compared to the standard line.

Hi Robert, thank you for your reply. I agree with you regarding the quality of Collings guitars but I kind of resent the marketing strategy behind the Waterloo brand. I wish I knew how much a basic guitar cost in the depression era, related to an average income. 2000 Dollar nowadays is at any rate a very substantial investment for a factory-built guitar. Kind regards, d.

You definitely will not be able to get much in the way of a fully custom guitar for $2k from a reputable local luthier. You'd be likely be looking at Collings prices for a one-off build. Anyway, $150 in 1929 is $2k today. Admittedly, a Stella, KK or Kalamazoo likely sold for far less than $150 in 1929....probably closer to $50, so like ~$700ish in 2017. Regardless, I don't think Collings/Waterloo claim that their Waterloo line is supposed to match 1:1 (inflation adjusted) in terms of costs. The materials and precision were just not there 80 years ago so even Collings 'fast and dirty' line of guitars are going to be superior to those $50 catalog guitars of the 20s and 30s. Also define 'factory-built guitar'? Do you mean just in terms of volume of instrutments? Size of shop?

Hi little wing, thank you for replying, you make good sense. Regarding the price of a luthier-made guitar. I was talking about 2k plus some more saving. The young luthiers I met at conventions charge from 3 k for a plain OM if they are not well known yet. My opinion might be biased and a tad too emotional. Most important: I've never played a Waterloo myself, so there's no way I could reasonably judge its pricetag. I can't help disliking the Colling's marketing strategy here, is all. A bit like Rolls Royce sold s.th. like a Honda Civic, but for 45.000, you know. Thank you and kindest regards, d.

I take your point re. absurdity of replicating a budget guitar at the price point of a D-18. But that does oversimplify things a little- these are *very* well built guitars and the quality is unmistakeable when you pick them up. They're a real joy to play and I would say better quality than some of the small body guitars Gibson sells for a higher price. If you want something with this plinky ladder-braced style, the Waterloo is that, done with exquisite attention to detail.
