I love when the introduction to classics not only discusses the impact of the work and it's significance in literature but actually gives these facts about the state of the economy and society at the time of it's publication that helps put into prospective what happens in the book. It doesn't fully influence the plot, but helps me connect better to the characters and, as you said, gives another layer through which you can judge their situation and place in society.
