Adam Sandler, The Rock, Jim Carey etc are perfect example of this . They always play the same characters or audiences see them as one type of character.
The difference is, those guys are working and The Rock is in every other movie lol.. I don't think he would mind playing the same funny guy if the work was constant; I haven't seen him in anything since.. That's the point.
Sadly there are many actors like Christopher who were typecast because of a popular character they played. Loni made a good point about experimenting while you are hot and agents not always giving you the best of advice.
That's because the CREATORS may NOT be a fan of the work these actors done previously. Hence why it's important to try and find people who may have ENJOYED what you've done previously. Some filmmakers or producers have worked with the same people over and over from John Carpenter to Joss Whedon. They know there's a chance we may want to see these actors again or they just may have enjoyed working with them....In Duncan's case, there may not have been too many big directors that were fans of the Jaime Foxx Show. Especially white directors with a wide range of tastes. Sometimes you just got to go where energy flows.
The worst thing to be as an actor is typecast. It happened to Alfonso Ribeiro also. However it's no one's fault but their team. Even when you're part of a successful show, if there's no restrictions, you always have to branch out during and after. Don't just settle for that one role. Yes I've seen him act other roles prior but none after. Maybe the type casting is why. It's so messed up
Yes it’s about having a good team of ppl around you to know what the next move in your career needs to be. Hollywood is only gonna take ppl they think are gonna be best for the character, can’t fault them lol
It goes to show how you really need connections and be part of a network to get ahead. Sometimes being good at your craft is not enough.. it is about who you know and how you look.
It’s apart of how you market yourself and your career. Typecasting is absolutely real but you can’t blame the trajectory of your career on a killer role that put you on the map. He played a drug dealer and it just wasn’t believable … he tried to go too far opposite and he didn’t do well in it to be honest. I’m sure they tried to typecast Garcelle as just a pretty face. Start creating your own.
agreed. real skill and talent cannot be silenced when combined with knowledge and smart decisions, so I'd bet he was lacking in at least one of those areas.
I get it, not as an actor but as a fan. I may be a little guilty of typecasting individuals. I have watched a few roles that Christopher was apart of and said there’s Braxton( his character from The Jamie Fox Show). Fortunately, Christopher played the role of Braxton all so well. Unfortunately, he may have missed out on several roles due to the very reason everyone loves him. I’m not an actor but have been summed up in life... some see my role as a mother and don’t see me any other way; others see me as just having a good time and don’t see me any other way; many have experienced my strength and don’t see me any other way... my point is, individuals will sum you up. It’s one’s place not to allow them sum up who we are or what we can do. Much love and peace!❤️✌🏾
The last TV show role I saw Garcelle acted in was "Siren" and for movie was "Coming 2 America". I was surprised to see her on Siren because I remember her as Fancy!
I think to me those who have a certain background don’t get taken seriously… like I feel like with actors now that were on shows back in the day the only options you have now is going to reality tv whether it’s going to DWTS to compete or being a real housewife…maybe going into hosting or being on hallmark… and not to say any of those things are bad but when you have a first love such as acting it can be heartbreaking when u audition and ur not even a thought to see what ur range is
Yup, and for it to be black creatives who put him in that space, knowing how it already is for black actors and musicians as a whole in Hollywood and the music industry, so I'm sure that stung a little more to get pigeonholed by his own community.
The man who played Leonel on the Jeffersons. He became a real estate something and done really well for himself. There were black people in Real Estate in California and other states that have done well create generational wealth. They don't talk about it in school or college.
I'm glad he went on to do well. And you make a good point...they should have clarified that it wasn't like Lionel didn't go on to have a good life even if it was outside Hollywood. We do need to be careful about that. Just because a person doesn't continue being in entertainment doesn't mean they may not still be working great jobs and living well. We need to make that distinction.
Yes, and like Loni already said Will did it while he was still hot though. Will was still young and had already started to diversify...it wasn't like it happened when he was older.
Yeah that’s like child stars too, they don’t want you to grow up. There’s nothing wrong with loving a character but to always call them that. One time I told Sally Whitfield husband, Dondre Whitfield. I loved the role he played on the Cosby show and all my children on twitter and he didn’t like it and he retweeted my message, with a message. I realized that messages on social media, whether they are public or not, there’s no privacy. I heard him the first time and apologize. People fall in love with a character and that’s what fans see you as, but I know peoples names and I can separate the two. I’m not trying to be funny but they need to stop putting those false lashes on Loni, it’s making her look cross sided and as if something is wrong with her eyes. If you watch previous seasons she don’t look like that.
I totally get it. Black actors are still having to fight to play more diverse roles and get paid fairly. Even now, Hollywood rewards BP for playing into stereotypes (thugs, maids, slaves, etc.). One things that's changed is that there are more black actors with their own production companies getting production deals and working behind the camera -- especially BW.
Okay the guy who played Lionel (the Jefferson’s son) he was actually the writer of Good Times and other Tv shows. So Loni is right about not acting but very wrong in “he wasn’t in nothing else” because he was a producer, wired and some other things behind the scenes!
Well like the actor Chris Tucker, he is well known as Smokey. He did rush hour as Carter but people only ever associate him as Smokey despite the fact that he is not at all like the character and does other gigs. People fall in love with some personas not realizing that by not moving forward you are blocking this actors craft.
tbh playing “Braxton” on the Jamie foxx show gave him what I would say his big break when we mention “Braxton” we’re mentioning how great he was his acting skills and plus sometimes we not good with names we associate some of this celebrities with the character they once played or play we mean no harm he shouldn’t take that as a gut wrenching feeling that’s a positive one you’re being remembered
Being an actor isn’t an easy job and then people feel entitled to talk smack while these actors are already going through so much emotional/mental stress
Hi edagdwg god bless this man he was being himself you have to be real with yourself as a real person it wasent for him to do anything elder he's still living a real life be thankful god bless you Linda j. Peace
I saw Kevin Hart lead a serious roll in a movie before. I forgot the name of it. But he was really great. I remember being emotional watching the movie. It was sad and funny.
Paula Jay Walker spoke on this about playing Craig’s crazy girlfriend in Friday so well that’s all they wanted to cast her as. But now she does so many of these independent black films we see on Netflix
Jamie killed Christopher Duncan’s career to advance his. Jamie wasn’t funny on that show, his character was *very* corny, and he was way over the top. Keep in mind this show was on the heels of ‘Martin’ and ‘Fresh Prince’ where the lead characters were *MUCH* more authentically funny. Unfortunately Jamie pushed Christopher’s character into a “box” of being a goofy, out-of-touch nerd - essentially an older, taller Steve Urkel - just to make it clear he (Jamie) was the leading man. Christopher was taller, *much* better looking, and a much better actor and Jamie knew he had to turn the “hunk” into “junk” so he could steal the show. So sad………..and I’m sure the show lags woefully behind Martin and Fresh Prince in syndication demand. From Christopher’s perspective this situation proves the age old adage “all money ain’t good money”.
Adam Sandler, The Rock, Jim Carey etc are perfect example of this . They always play the same characters or audiences see them as one type of character.
but those three are worth over 100 million dollars and A-list superstars......
Adam Sandler produce most of his work and have brunch out plenty of times
The difference is, those guys are working and The Rock is in every other movie lol.. I don't think he would mind playing the same funny guy if the work was constant; I haven't seen him in anything since.. That's the point.
Add Kevin Heart to the list. They play the exact same type of character no matter what.
@@bsbgirl85 omg yesss I can’t stand that lil gremlin.

The fans also
i think that’s the curse of playing a role so well, everybody wants you to stay in the role.
Garcelle will always be fancy to me 🤷🏽♀️😂
Lol right
Yup 🤣
Always!
It goes to show how you really need connections and be part of a network to get ahead. Sometimes being good at your craft is not enough.. it is about who you know and how you look.
Particularly in black comedy, hard to tell when they laughing at ya or with ya, but can't walk away cause you hungry for success and validation.
hahahahahaha right?

I’m sure they tried to typecast Garcelle as just a pretty face.
Start creating your own.
True enough, but at the end of the day, these execs and studio heads don't see it that way.
agreed. real skill and talent cannot be silenced when combined with knowledge and smart decisions, so I'd bet he was lacking in at least one of those areas.
Are you talking about that Chicago PD episode 🤣👏
Now I'm in the mood to watch the Jaimie Foxx show! Praying for you Christopher!!
I get it, not as an actor but as a fan. I may be a little guilty of typecasting individuals. I have watched a few roles that Christopher was apart of and said there’s Braxton( his character from The Jamie Fox Show).

Off topic but whoever is putting on my girl Loni’s eyelashes must be retrained 😅
Poor thing can’t see!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yooooooooo she got one eye open and one closed. Its giving, " I got my eye on you." 👀😂
I think to me those who have a certain background don’t get taken seriously… like I feel like with actors now that were on shows back in the day the only options you have now is going to reality tv whether it’s going to DWTS to compete or being a real housewife…maybe going into hosting or being on hallmark… and not to say any of those things are bad but when you have a first love such as acting it can be heartbreaking when u audition and ur not even a thought to see what ur range is

I absolutely love you guys…keep up the great work!

Will Smith played Fresh Prince and still did movies and music. At least he was able to diversify.
But that don't mean he didn't have his rejections.
A big thing that helped Will is that he was told to use his real name by Alfonso Ribeiro. The name of the character is a big factor.
Yes, and like Loni already said Will did it while he was still hot though. Will was still young and had already started to diversify...it wasn't like it happened when he was older.
Rish

I watched that video on the Comedy Hype youtube channel too!
lol Loni loves to give people nicknames! :)

I enjoyed him in Black Lightning
Kevin Hart did it with “True Story” on Netflix, it possible! Keep trying
TY for summoning up that movie💪🤗 have a great day
Love Loni's outfit!
Okay the guy who played Lionel (the Jefferson’s son) he was actually the writer of Good Times and other Tv shows. So Loni is right about not acting but very wrong in “he wasn’t in nothing else” because he was a producer, wired and some other things behind the scenes!

Rush Hour?
He also did Money Talks and Fifth Element with Bruce Willis
I was *just* talking/thinking about typecasting earlier. It’s horrible. ☹️
tbh playing “Braxton” on the Jamie foxx show gave him what I would say his big break when we mention “Braxton” we’re mentioning how great he was his acting skills and plus sometimes we not good with names we associate some of this celebrities with the character they once played or play we mean no harm he shouldn’t take that as a gut wrenching feeling that’s a positive one you’re being remembered
What’s wrong with loni eyelashe?
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Garcelle is so graceful. Beautiful and regal.
Is it the one where he is a single dad?
His had two serious roles, The Upside and Fatherhood. Both great
He was amazing In the show soul food
It was such a good show but in Hollywood being type casted happens often
Those lashes coming off crossed eyed lol
Wow this is crazy
Loni's lashes always on wrong!
Stop it
Too you..
Paula Jay Walker spoke on this about playing Craig’s crazy girlfriend in Friday so well that’s all they wanted to cast her as. But now she does so many of these independent black films we see on Netflix
*Paula Jai Parker.
Why did no one fix her lashes
The only person being type casted worked for was Denzel Washington
How?
The guy who played Lionel was barely in the show. Don’t see how that hurt his career. Sometimes you just don’t get those breaks.
I understand
Whoa!
Hllywd is a play for pay if u dont "play the game" u wont get paid
Christopher should get 2 agents like Samuel Jackson...may help some
💜💜💜💜
did they say where jeannie was
Probably on maternity leave
She’s on maternity leave
She is on maternity leave until March
Until March?? Oh my Gode
They only talked about this because garcelle worked with him😜😜😜

Garcelle should help him
