Cond. Valery Gergiev -
I choose to believe that this is an absolutely enormous conductor with a normal sized baton.
I can't have enough upvotes for this image you created in my mind...
I’d like to know the story behind this lol….never seen a conductor with a toothpick
best comment of all times
I first heard Ravel's Bolero on a recording my father had over 65 years ago. It became my anthem. This performance of it is spectacular. The tune never gets old. :)
The conductor is epic. He's like: "Fuck it I'm using a toothpick tonight"
Ha! Made you look! I think he had to take something^^ And the toothepick was the tiniest^^
Lol.
+TATORS HOMESTEAD
You got a thumbs up, now tell me, is that true ?
lol
I was hoping it was true :)
I`m not a big lover of classical music but must admit the time flew by watching this masterful performance. It`s so inspiring to watch so many talented musicians who have toiled many a year to get to that stage, literally :).
Thanks e s much for the info.
Most sincerely
JF ( UK )
I agree re the synchronised remark. Yet put the musicians in separate rooms and this interaction would not be possible. They literally have to be close and at hand for all of them to gel. This may seem a little far fetched but its a fact that has been proven.
I will try my best to find the video for you to watch as its very interesting !!!!
Sat with my 2 1/2 year old daughter on my lap and she was able to watch all 19 minutes, which is unusual. A great video to show how all the parts of the orchestra work together. An inspiration to young musicians.
same here with my daughter :D
The most amazing bit, for me, are the violins, violas, cellos, and contrabass.
From reluctant pizzicato to pure aggressiveness.
They say there is no such thing as perfection. Nonsense. THIS is perfection. Masterpiece
bolero is my favorite classical song of all time, but this is my favorite rendition of all time, it needs more likes
Bolero was introduced to me at 7...i would lay in front of the high fie and close my eyes and feel and dream about a long camel caravan going across the dessert with the king and rich queens and soilders...i am 62 now and still close my eyes and see the same and feel every single instrument it is one of the most beautiful sexy pieces of music....will always love it....to the nerve endings love it......
Welllll, I'm 92 now, and still LOVING this...my favorite !!!!!!!!! I wish I could hug Valery !!!
15:42 Maximum perfection ever !!!!!!! HAPPYNESS AND POWER LEVEL ----> 100.000.000 !!!!
10/10
kinda like transforming to Ultrasaiyajin, yep
I'd love to play the drums with such discipline!
This piece has to be nothing but amazing that you have to listen to this over and over again, Gergiev conducts with compassion and soul in this performance that I would love to see this in person. I SO LOVE how he uses a toothpick for this :) hehehehehehe its just cute!
I have watched this like 5-6 times already and I think its time for more :)
it's like when the sun is rising slowly, slowly... and he appears !
beautiful analogy
Beautiful, actually brought tears to my eyes. Loved every moment of it.
Me too!
Me too! I was SPELLBOUND! Played us with COOL precision!
I’ve watched this, LOUDLY, at least six times in the last 72 hours! Gergiev is a painter!
This is GOLD..Absolute perfection on every note.. Bravo!
Wonderful orchestra and Music!
Impeccable. Gergiev absolutely nails it. The ultimate performance of this iconic piece.
The only performance that rivals this is LSO under Andre Previn. No other orchestra gets it right, it seems to meeeeee!🎉
Bolero: conducted by Anger Management.
Bravo. Pure Brilliant Bravo. Every instrument and drum beat of pure perfection. 2023 echo's your amazing performance forever. Bravo!
Imagine being apart of that orchestra!, i literally lost myself in the piece, that theme Being passed around the various instruments...so much emotional color.
ecstatic! i love how at the end the musicians realise that they pulled off something extraordinary under the direction of this brilliant conductor and they know that their performance will be remembered and enjoyed many years into the future
I've always been asking what on Earth a conductor does in orchestra?! After listening to Bolero many times before conducted by Dudamel, Jansons, Mehta and so on I understood that this performance by Gergiev is the one that even Ravel would like himself... I can sleep relaxed now, as I understood the secret behind conductor's role!
I'm astonished! What a wonderful orchestra!!!
Meine Mutter verstarb kurz vor Weihnachten.
Sie liebte dieses Stück sehr.
Wir liessen es bei ihrer Beerdigung spielen.
Can you only imagine the death stare from THAT conductor if you mess up!?!?
@@sagradasinfamilia Es increíble no? Una de las mejores interpretaciones de Bolero!!!!👏👏👏
I wonder if Ravel himself realised how much genius lay behind this piece. It never fails to amaze and entrance me. (and I am a composer)
+Peter Klatzow I recall reading about him saying that wasn't too fond of it. "I have written a masterpiece, yet there is no music in it". Probably something to do with the lack of counterpoints, and somewhat flatness of the piece, that boils down to a glorified (and oh so pleasant too) crescendo.
Fantastic music! A great version for all to hear! I want to hang out with this conductor!!! Looks like he just spent 3 days in a Amsterdam cafe! Then conducts the London Symphony Orchestra with a toothpick!!! AWESOME!!!
Loooooove!!!!!! Makes me cry everytime
Holy shit.. I cried in the end.
I studied this piece in college in the 70's. It's so intricate! ❤
Great performance of this piece. The orchestra had excellent dynamics throughout the entire piece from ppp to ffff...=) Very musical too. Awesome job!
no one has ever weld a toothpick,to such excellence
both the performance and the conducting, omg they are just amazing. I like this 'perfect' tempo and steadiness till the end. it is a little bit funny that the conductor uses a toothpick but nonetheless I think this version of bolero to be the best. BRAVO :^)
Ravel was often critical about how his most famous piece was interpreted, but I think if he were alive today, he'd approve of this performance. Without a doubt, the best rendition I have heard of this magnificent piece of music. At least 4050 drum beats!
Magic. Watching videos like these always make me wish I was an orchestral musician (as well as a guitarist)
You are not the only one...
Or at least a guitarist ...
Jeff Jeffery You are not alone, not at all.
suspense all the way! more! more! more!
Bravo!
This is how to get a room full of folks to agree on something
Humans in harmony is a beautiful thing
Love the trombonist cutting lose at 10:43 it almost sounds like he's auditioning for a blues band.
Absolutely magnificent even after 20th time. Didn´t know Jack Nicholson was this talented
I've sat through opening credits for some major motion pictures that were shorter than the opening for this video. Get to the music!
what a thrill... such a strong beat... makes bolero become so masculine... BRAVO
Just fantastic. Finished my Christmas day celebrations with this; think I'll make that a yearly tradition! Loved the performance, loved the video!
BRAVO!!! BRAVOOOO! I don't care if the conductor holds a toothpick or a piece of feather or nothing at all. This gives me goosebumps.
I'm going to listen to & comment on every version of Bolero I can find. I can't seem to get enough of it. This is my third listening. This particular one is quite stirring, and I had only to hear a few minutes before I was completely in awe of M. Gergiev's utter mastery of his craft. A toothpick for a baton? A Titan fells a mighty forest with a mere eyelash!
Huge crescendo....*Gergiev calmly finger-brushes hair back into place*.
Epic.
Wanna stop a war.? Insist both sides sit together and listen to how awesome humans can be when creating instead of destroying .....
I love you man
My brother introduced me to Bolero 60 years ago, love the music. There is so much life and story in it. 😎🇺🇸
I love watching Valery (pronounced Val-e-air-y) Gergiev conduct in this video. Talk about getting into your work! Dude is consumed.
best performance ever of this greatest classic ever and i quote.
This is some intensity with the most delicate, gradual growth. Every instrument is honored and given its due.
Absolutely entrancing! I turned this on to listen while I ate my lunch - and forgot to eat my lunch.
This made me think of the never-ending cycle of nature when I first listened to it.🌿
This is getting me chill and relaxed in a middle of an serious struggle. Thanks Ravel.
Absolutamente sublime. Sin palabras. Maravilloso.
Could not have said it better myself!
Seems like Valery GERGIEV is one of the best conductors actually. This is one of the best Bolero version I've never heard. Claudio ABBADO recorded a top one with the LSO in the 80s on DG.
Great conductor... just conducts and looks a bit like he emptied his flask of vodka prior to the performance to calm the nerves!! lol
Listen to Maestro Gergiev’s Bolero at least 3 or times a day🎵❣️Beautiful as ever
Of all the best presentations of Bolero I’ve heard in my decades of living, this is the very best ever. These musicians and each of their masterful command of their instrument is glorious. The nuances that Gergiev has brought to each passage is remarkable!
AAMAZING!!!
this may not have been Ravel's favourite piece of music, but I wonder if he had heard this version, he would have changed his mind
This is one of the very first pieces I taught myself on the flute when I was twelve. Love this version!
2:12 You're welcome
Thank you, charitable soul!
Thank you. I scrolled down specifically to find someone kind who had done this.
Thank ya Herr Doktor.
SvartHal I wish I'd seen this before binary-searching my way through the first half of the video seeking the music's start.
SvartHal Indebted to you
Came here to relax, it paid off. I love how the conductor grows more dishevelled towards the end and when music ends he looks exhausted! xD
Just a digimon fan passing through
Amazingly Hypnotic! Bravo!
Goosebumps...
I have sympathy for the snare drummer
Gergiev is a living legend.. But I want to mention another name for this performance: Percussionist Sam Walton
If he's the snare drummer then he is my hero. A living, breathing drum machine. Anyone who can carry that rhythm through 18 passages of the A and B themes of this piece without so much as the hint of a mistake has my respect.
Great " thank you ! London Symphony Orchestra for publishing it ! Great
One of my all-time favorite pieces of classical music. So well done! Bravo Maestro!
This is such a wonderful performance! Gergiev seems to put himself in a trance before lifting his eyes and baton! This sets the tone for the work, and I am myself mesmerised throughout! Thank you for enriching my day!
Algum brasileiro apreciando esse som divino?
Mas é claro!
Sensacional... Som de Deus...
Sim, excelente!
They absolutely NAILED the ending! Note perfect!
Possibly my favorite classical piece of music. Genius and masterfully performed. It is always a joy to listen to it and the video was superb bringing you visually right along with the music as it develops. Loved it!!!
...and the crowd goes wild! Great Piece of music
Such power and poise! Perfection!!
WOW!!! one of the best performances i ever saw
bolero still always gives me goosebumps....such an awesome piece

Hoy seguro dormiré en el cielo. Extraordinario! Maestro Valery Gergiev!
Great Masterpiece. Thank you Mr Gregiev. The immortal Bolero.
I was looking for this song for ages, but I did not remember the tune, all I remembered was that it was a song that my late Mum loved, I listened to various songs, but could not come up with it ... then it suddenly came into my head, but I had no title, so I wisled it into Google search, and I got the result. This song is an incredibly, beautiful masterpiece ❤
Sublime.
the expression on this guy,s face is so intense , just like the music ! it touches every verve in my body
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!
Wonderful!! Like this version how Bolero sounds here !!Thank you!
This is absolutely amazing!!!!
