I'm a huge fan of the Zelda series, but my least favorite thing about every Zelda game I've ever played was the feeling of not being able to go certain places in the overworld just because I didn't have a specific item yet. I also always hated how the story and dungeon order was linear in all the games, but there were many times in several of them when I didn't know what I was supposed to do next and I couldn't find evidence to guide me. I love the fact that they've fixed both of these problems in A Link Between Worlds by giving you access to all the items from the beginning and by letting you complete the dungeons in whatever order you choose.
I can't wait. :D
TheIcyPhantom let me tell you about a game called Breath of the Wild... xD
While the innovation argument is completely valid, Zelda games have always been unique from previous and future entries. The formula that is followed is just what makes them a sequel
The only real thing I've hated about the Zelda series was the economy has always sucked in most games. Nice to see Rupee's are actually worth something in this one.
Yep, Nintendo games are always like that.
Also in Ocarina of Time
@@AspectRx nope, there they're useless lmao
@@AspectRx nope, there they're useless lmao
Derrick, you and Andre make this channel worthwhile 100% of the time. This review was one of your best ones yet, and it makes me look forward to A Link Between Worlds more and more. I hope you keep up the outstanding ALBW coverage, as it along with Super Mario 3D World will be the game I'll be looking forward to playing this holiday season!
6:01 made me cry it, was so perfect
Russell Larson do you know what the song is called please?
London Wulff Zelda’s lullaby
Memories… ;(
HOLY SHIT THAT MUSIC. This game literally seems like it has the potential to be one of the best zelda's in almost a decade! This sounds like it fixes every single problem I have that has made me disappointed with every post-windwaker zelda game.
Same here.
It seems like the classic Zelda we've been waiting to see another of. It brings back a some nostalgia while still bringing up new and improved elements. I Can't wait to get it!
If it were 3D and not the classic up down view probably. (Just my opinion don't hate)
This is my first ever legend of zelda game
Mine too
*****
I played those two games after this one. I got the Wind Waker HD for my birthday, so I'll play that sometime after I finish Mojara's mask 3D
+DinkleBurg Games You mean A link to the past.
+Giselda Natalia Download A link to the past.
Honestly, it's a good place to start
Every review I've seen/read of this game has pointed out that there is little to no handholding. I can't even express how happy that makes me, honestly. Excessive handholding has been ruining games for me lately and I just can't take any more of it. I am so glad to hear that A Link Between Worlds is a game that actually lets you PLAY the game on your own.
Thats the one reason I am excited for this as well
Just Beat it today and liked every part of it except for a couple of the mini-games.
I really hope the item meter system makes it into newer games. It was nice not having to worry about running out of arrows, bombs, etc.
I can't wait to play this game. Link to the past is one of my most favorite games
Thanks for showing that extended clip of those two characters performing Zelda's Lullaby. I seriously got chills. Also, great review. Very informative.
I can't wait to get this game! I love listening to Zelda music on long car rides.
6:23 Oh god, after playing ocarina of time, I got severe goosebumps
do you know the origin of zelda's lullaby?
That pause to listen to Zelda's Lullaby gave me goosebumps all over.
one of the best zelda's yet. the whole non-linear feeling you get from being able to choose which item you want to carry really makes a huge difference in the feeling of exploration. I really hope they incorporate this into the next 3d zelda on wii u, with a huge open world. just leave it free to choose where we want to go. thats also how i want the next 3d metroid prime style game to be like. just land on a planet with a mission and then get searching like you would in a real situation like that.
Exceptionally well put-together review for what looks like an exceptionally well put-together game.
So excited for this game! Picking up my limited edition Zelda 3DSxL at GameStop tonight at midnight along with the download code for albw. Haven't been this excited about a Zelda game since… Don't even remember!
I suddenly forgot the song playing at 6:15. What is it again? >.
Zelda's Lullaby
LucidityTruth I can play it well. I got this new electric piano with 128 options.
#80 is Ocarina. The middlemost C-position is the most memorable. It sounds pleasing, too!
Looks SO good. Zelda's still got it
You know what I would really love to see from this game? DLC for future dungeons- Or maybe a level editor of some sort. Because of the layout of the game, switching in and out weapons and tackling dungeons in any order, I think it could work great here!
Not gonna happen though :(
Shhh!!!!
.... let me dream....
This aged kinda well
Soooo Majora's Mask remake next? :D
Hope so!
+matthew shingleton Wish Granted! (one year too late posting this)
bingo
Well you got your wish
Yup
"zewda"... Am I the only one who noticed this?
I thought I was alone!
Yeah now I'm really getting this for Christmas! The review was great, it really helped me clear my doubts about the game.
I like that newer zeldas are making the journeys to dungeons their own puzzles. I hope they continue that
Thanks for not having the Napoleon dynamite sounding guy do this review
Lol
I really hope there`s no Water Temple or something like that, please...
I liked the Swamp temple.
Criminey... this sounds incredible. Here I was dreading getting my PS4 tomorrow due to the poor launch titles, but leave it to Nintendo to give me hope. Which makes me sad over the people who feel the need to needlessly mock.
That music is amazing!
What I don't get is whair would this game go in the Zelda time line I know it a "direct sequel" to lttp but isn't the aren't oracle games and link's awakening (and maby the 2 nes games) the same link
How did link get the master sword? I thought it was put back in its place and would stay there forever
Hey Derrick, how about you increase the scale of your ranking to 10 stars maximum instead of 5 stars. That way, we could have a more clear and accurate score for reviewed games! :)
Well technically it is 10 out of 10 since we do half stars. It's just the way we do things. But yeah, I'm calling this one a must play ;) ~Derrick
***** I know, but the increased range helps, that is:
5 to 6 -> Average.
7 to 8 -> Good.
9 -> Very Good.
10 -> Awesome!
Instead of:
3 -> Average.
4-> Good (or very good).
5-> Awesome.
Not to mention that games with 8 stars are considered better than similar games with 7 stars for example.
But its okay anyway. Keep up the good work! :)
Will definitely be picking this up soon. I've been starved for a good original portable Zelda game since Seasons/Ages.
*cough* minish cap, phantom hourglass, spirit tracks, four swords *cough*
Guitarist500 It's not that I didn't know those games existed. I tried PH and disliked it more than I liked it, so I never bothered to check out Spirit Tracks. I didn't like Four Swords either. So, yeah. This one looks on par with Seasons/Ages, so I'm excited.
After going back between this & A Link to the Past, I can say that this is my favorite 2D Zelda game. My favorite Zelda game of all time along with Majora's Mask. Nothing wrong with A Link to the Past, that game is still amazing, but I feel like A Link Between Worlds did so much compelling to me than what A Link to the Past has. I love both of them, but A Link Between Worlds is my pick.
The nostalgia was real when i fired up this game for the first time just to see what it was like. Instantly had the ALttP feel. Can't wait to dive in to it when i get more time.
Yeaaah... it looks pretty good after all.
Being able to advance without necessarily a specific item is pretty good, hope it's used well throughout the game.
Also, disappointed you didn't show/talked about the Hero Mode.
Can't wait, perfect reviews all over :O
Just beat it. Can't wait to try HERO MODE!
I am glad to hear that the hand holding is minimal.
Everywhere is giving a link between worlds a perfect score! holy shit I can't wait
To the people asking about the red sword:
From what I can tell, it's still the Master Sword. Just with a glowing, red hue on the blade. Probably similar to the light thingy that was put on the Master Sword in Twilight Princes. I'd guess that it allows you to do something else with it, or maybe it's just more powerful.
In A Link to the Past, you can temper the Master Sword with the help of some gnomey blacksmiths, and it becomes orange after that point.
Probably something more like that.
Okay it's cool you can just rent any item, but am I the only guy who really really really likes the normal way Zelda games progress with items?
i don't know... are you?
Fernando Ilabaca
I don't know..... am I?
Maybe maybe not.. but actually it was getting stale..
whoever12341
I love that feeling when in a dungeon when you're like ''how do I get up there???'' then you find a hookshot and you can ''get up there'' ....
That's one of the most special things about Zelda imo. Seeing somewhere or something that you know you can't access because you haven't found the right item. Now we can just rent what ever we want, I'm very intrigued to see if this makes it more or less fun :S
Edward Ruane Maybe, but in my opinion that aspect of th franchise is not as important as exploration, and this game encourages it more so than the rest of the franchise, almost as in Zelda 1. So it sounds
What a great review. This game is the reason I own a 3ds. I was really getting sick of the Zelda series before I was recommended this game.
I can't wait for this game!
from what I'm hearing pretty much everywhere I know I'll love playing this game, it seems to be a great step forward and hopefully it's a sign of what the next title will be but seriously....
Low-rule? I'm not sure I like the concept of a pun being used to name anything in a beloved franchise like LOZ, I suppose the next negative world they introduce can be called Hy-anarchy or something
no it would be hy-archy get your puns together m8
5:53 this song made me cry. it's so pretty.
I was already really excited for this game. This review has made me even more excited.
Hey,
really appreciated your review. You hit a lot of important points and your arguments are well thought out. Kudos, great job.
And thanks for that game recommendation!
wow a unbiased review thanks gamexplain i plan on picking this up it looks very fun and engaging
Excellent review, extremely detailed. Subscribed.
So I don't have the game yet, and I've been trying to stay away from most reviews/walkthroughs, but can you still get the items in the dungeons or only get them from the shop? Thanks and sorry if I'm asking a stupid question.
The items you find in the dungeons are not the same. They are not necessary to beat the game. However, it is obligatory to use the items in Ravio's shop to beat the game.
"Does The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds live up to the past on the Nintendo 3DS? Find out in our review!" A Link to the Past is on the SNES(I know you know that). Please fix this mistake in the description. Thank you.
Please like so Andre and or Derrick can see. :)
Yes, but a Link Between Worlds is on the 3ds
You misunderstood his sentence. He didn't make a mistake.
Ooooooooooooooh, God I feel stupid. Sorry to bother.
I want this so much! I need to get going and finish ALttP, but the Gargoyle's Lair dungeon (I think that's what it's called) is really kicking my butt.
+HippoTNT you still get items in the dungeons, however only in the lorule dungeons.
Preordered for chest only but after your review the game looks a lot more fun than the gameplay given in trailers
Nice review guys. Just in case you're looking for the soundtrack I've already uploaded about 5 HQ tracks from this game including lorule's theme and hilda's theme. You know how to find them. Thanks.
Agreed on the 5/5 score. It's just that good. I can't get the soundtrack out of my head, and that's not a bad thing c:
I can't wait to play this and 3D World all day next Friday! I hope they keep that auto-refilling magic meter in the next Zelda game for Wii U. Very modern, fun twist!
Great review!
Got me even more excited about the game. Keep up the good work!
The guy with the bunny mask selling the items could be the happy mask salesman :D
My first like real zelda game was wind waker hd and i bought it in the nintendo selects for 199 and i loved it!
I love the sound track too. Even though I have only heard like 7 songs, I love the soundtrack
Just purchased it today can't wait to try it out :)
So u did get an early copy.
Hey Derrick, nice review :) Keep up with the awesome work =)
Can't believe it's been 8 years already.
This review just made me so much more excited for the game
Sweet great reveiw can't wait
Hey Derrick, is there a higher difficulty setting? And if so will it be availeble from the start or do you have to finish the game first??
a) yes! b) no, you have to finish first.
what a piss off was to happy windwaker allowed hero mode from the start but wasnt expecting the trend to continue
mnjkmnjk123
WWHD was a straightforward remake and that choice was given was given for the ones that already knew the game --as gameplay is much more accesible and fast paced that the original version, and even the mayor tasks are siplified, double-damage is something nice. A real difficulty change would be harder and different dungeons like OoT:MQ, or change where the Triforce Shards are located and how to get them in the second playthrough.
im aware of the reasoning its obvious, though that didnt stop them from making the remake of oot hero modeless at the start, im just sharing my discontent zelda is an easy franchise i was hoping for the challenge to continue and i hope when they remake majoras mask they try for more and add in the two unfinished dungeons that would be very different and satisfying but again this is nintendo...
mnjkmnjk123
I agree with that. I never played the 3DS OoT and wasn't aware of that. But as you said, it's Nintendo.
I am actually not a fan of remakes and the only reason I would buy OoT's is for MQ because I only played it once because a friend lend it to me, and I am not willing to pay for WW's. MM is my favorite TLOZ, and I may jump into a double standard if it ever comes out. It would be better if the game itself id differentfrom the get-go, and adding two dungeons may be cool if they give more importance to different masks (or change side quests) yet I'm not sure if it would mix well with the story.
Guys, I really would want this question answered, and I admit it's kind of specific.
Does the game force you to pick up the heart container after a boss is killed, like in ALTTP, or can you get the dungeon token and get out without picking it up like later games?
Thanks!
I never personally tried it, but it was always laying off to the side. So I think you can skip the Heart Containers if you want to. ~Derrick
*****
Thanks
I know this was asked a while ago but feel I'll answer in case anyone is reading through these now and wants to know. You definitely can skip heart containers. I did it by accident once and when I went back to the boss room the container was there waiting for me.
3:12 Oh I smell a master quest edition(or at least the return of the water breathing suit and the lava and fire proof suit)!
Its a water suit.
I think the blue tunic gives link the ability to hold more stamina or magic... Each clip that he has that on his magic bar is higher than the others
so i just bought the new 3ds xl. would this be a good game to get?
***** absolutely! This is one of the best, if not THE best 3DS game!
Holy Crap, 6:10, that brings back so many memories.
was thinking the same thing dude
I'm trying to decide between this, kirby triple deluxe, and shovel knight. I am a big fan of kirby, but I do want to get into zelda more. also, I really like games with a retro feel. Which should I get?
Retro? Big Kirby fan? ORIGINAL KIRBY
(I then went on to win a Nobel Prize.)
One of the first games I ever played.
... I decided to go with kirby.
I just read the ign review and apparently there are over world enemies that did 4 hearts of damage, and to me a link to the past was one of the hardest games in the franchise, so for me I think this game will be very challenging, and I will be buying this game
Must Agree with the dude below whats up with that shop where you Buy everything. A Big thing with Zelda is to look in dungeons for the stuff you need next. Just reading that make me wonder why I should enter dungeons at all.
There are items in the dungeons that let you upgrade Link, like the Hylian Shield which can block Magic Attacks and Ore that lets you upgrade the Master Sword
Great Review :) Can't Wait To Get The Game.
Just beat the game and it was fun, rememberable and clever. The music was fantastic, the story was surprising and exquisite. I felt like I actually wanted to save the sages ( especially gully he is sooo cute!) I found lorule to be intriguing and liked exploring it. The new ability is greatly used, but not a gimmick. But if there is a downside bosses are very easy and quick to beat. I didn't mind it though because I was having so much fun!!! Overall it is a great game and I think every Zelda fan should play it!! 10/10
Great game. Also, I hope that Majora's Mask being in Link's house is a hint that that game will be remade for the 3DS.
Love how the first 6 comments I saw had nothing to do with this game. SHUT UP ABOUT GOOGLE + PEOPLE!
Yay!! Now I'm even more excited to get the game for my 3DS soon :)
my god beautiful soundtracks...just amazing
Amazing, this is the Zelda game I've been waiting for since I beat Alttp back then.
Really great review!
I've not had the chance to play this yet, but I don't like the idea of Ravio's shop. One of my favorite things in Zelda is to explore a dungeon and find the next cool item to use for the rest of the dungeon's puzzles and in the future. I'd much rather do that than be forced to buy the tools. It removes the surprise element of what you get to use in the game, too. And the renting mechanic makes me want to grind for rupies just to actually own the items instead of risking the rentals.
I am excited to play the game, though. It looks really fun. I just don't like the methods of item procurement.
You'd be surprised at how little you'll care about how you procure items when you play it. Not to mention the added fun of having an awesome item, not required for the dungeon, to use against an enemy, finding hidden vulnerabilities like freezing fire things with your ice rod instead of blowing them out with the required dungeon item the Tornado staff thing. Renting it for fun, lead to a new cool way of beating things.
Plus, rentals are 1/16th the price of purchase, it's no big deal, I doubt you'll even die much in normal mode. Just save when you have all the items you want and restart if you die without much progress.
My favorite game gets a squeal which is even more kick ass. I love this game so much.
Great Review, I must get this game now!
5:05 hyland sheald and upgraded/red master sword.
Oh man I can't wait for this game.
Can't wait for this. A link to the past was really the only zelda game i ever truly liked, and this will be my next.
what in the actual fuck is wrong with you? LTTP is my favorite, but you didn't like OOT?
Edward Gibson It's called opinions, dude. >_>
I thought it was too vague, and bored me after a good while.
Anything about majoras mask you would like to add?
Best zelda game ever made. Lttp you get number 2 and it isn’t blasphemous, because your follow-up does you justice, and more
Everybody says good things about this, might get it.
I don't know what to do... Buy Super Mario 3DWorld or A Link between worlds... I think I'll go with Mario just because the Wii U could use more support... #nintendofanproblems
Thats it , im getting a 3ds xl with both zelda games!
Nice Review!
At first I didn't like Zelda a Link between Worlds based on my impressions of the trailers. But thanks to your review, i think that this Zelda game will be really good and i'm going to buy it.
Man I really wish I could afford to buy a 3DS/2DS and all the great games that have come out for it recently.
***** Which did you rather (If Derrick and Andre can answer these) Link to the Past or Link Between Worlds?
Thanks for taking time to read this :D
the rabit dude in the shop might be possibly the happy mask salesman guy from majoras make and ocarina of time?
