When a Japanese person tells you your Japanese is good, that’s them being polite. When they tell other people your Japanese is good, that’s when you know they mean it.
Another metric for actually good Japanese, is a Japanese person will ask you how long you've been living in Japan as opposed to just telling you your Japanese is good.

@@theoneguyoverthere it's because she's in HoloEN and they usually assume that she speaks better in English rather than Japanese. Which is funny, because it used to be the opposite in the earlier days, with most JP senpais commenting on how good her English is and her getting flustered about it coz like I said she IS in the EN branch 😅

Feels like she's basically a reverse Coco, both are Japanese, born and raised in America then moved to Japan but where Coco spoke primarily English in her household I bet IRyS spoke mostly Japanese in her's.

@@matthewk320 dont confuse “Citizenship” and actual “Blood/Race”. You can still be called “American” even if ur an Asian by blood because you live most of ur life in America and got a citizenship there. I know and have seen IRyS past life and person behind the avatar, and nope she aint American, everything screams asian in physical appearance, unless shes half and her asian blood just dominated in her genes.
Its like how Kronii calls herself “Canadian”, while being Korean by blood.

@@villahermosasebastian8794 Kiara was stuck there during COVID in 2020 and had to leave once both the lock downs and her visa ended. Apparently it was a once in a lifetime visa too since Japan is stingy with visas to non Japanese people

I mean IRyS is essentially a native japanese speaker based on everything we know about her. I would imagine she had similar use of english and japanese growing up, probably more japanese within her household and english outside because she’s japanese-american. that would explain why she isn’t native level at reading japanese but is certainly a native speaker.

IrYs is an American with Japanese ancestry. Her mother is Japanese and im not sure what her dad is. But she grew up in Hawaii and then moved to Japan in her teens to try to become an idol. Hawaii has alot of Japanese though and its one of the most popular languages both as residents and tourists. So she is surrounded by native speakers.

@OP, when they talked about soy milk. It doesn't mean that they ordered soy milk to drink, but besides sukiyaki soup, what other soup does Irys want for the shabu-shabu. In Japan (and anywhere else probably) you can order separate soups in one shabu. Soy milk is quite popular in Japan. There is also collagen, shechuan, etc.

It surprises me that IRyS has been with holo for almost a year, and there’s still members of HoloJP who aren’t aware of IRyS’ Japanese proficiency.
Granted, I know holo is huge and of course not every holomem has a relationship with each other. But I’d figure at least by now word would have spread amongst HoloJP that IRyS’ proficiency is near-native level.
Most of the Hololive girls tend to be introverts, combine that with Japanese culture of assuming foreigners can't speak Japanese that well and you got a recipe for unintentional avoidance

Interesting how dropping the honorific seems such a big deal to Flare, I didn't think younger JP people were that hung up on it still. (although the senpai-kohai thing is there but it's sort of built into the system at holo).
EN doesn't use honorific names to much, sometimes sir, maam to olders and someone you don't know at all, if we already going somwhere together with someone we just use names if we in simillar age. Im from Poland so i dont speak about whole but its also what i see in others EU, NA countries

Edit: I think you misunderstood the term "yobisute". It's when you call someone without any honorifics (-chan, -kun, -san, etc.). I think you are confusing it with the custom of using the last name first.
Ah yobisute isn't always the Family name then, it could be the Honorifics. I just thought Flare just call her _Ir_ back then and _Rys_ now 😂

when i just met someone and i just do that on instinct like calling someone in his/her first name, and just called me in my first name basis,
and if in a few hours we talk a bunch of things, my mind just made this stranger into friend instantly...
it's an important thing in Japanese, it's like calling elders in a rude way
