    I'm down with Dennis Doncaster's post. Those of us who live in northerly parts of the world don't fully realize the impact of the blistering heat of the summer sun - especially on south facing inclines. At your latitude, I refer to your peak summer sun season as 'solar winter'. Your seasons are fall growing, winter dormancy, spring growing and solar winter.
    Bye the way, have you heard of mulching planted trees with rocks? An interesting concept from Africa to moderate soil temperature, reduce evaporation and control competing vegetation.

    • @GrowTreeOrganics
      @GrowTreeOrganics  20 часов назад +1

      Exactly, but yes I have heard of rock mulching, which the Zuni people also did, along with African cultures and Aztec, Mayan, etc. So much more to cover as we go! Thanks for stopping in!😅✌🏾

    In the Northern Hemisphere, there are typically more trees on the north side of a property because the south side receives more direct sunlight, leading to drier conditions less suitable for tree growth, while the north side tends to be shadier and retain more moisture, creating a better environment for trees to thrive; essentially, the north side experiences cooler temperatures and higher humidity, which favors tree growth....BE BLESSED! LOVING THIS PROJECT.

      Someone had answered correctly, being there a difference between a North side and the northern edge of the property. I was going over our northern edge of property, which has no slope is the almost the same as the south side, so the sun hits it the same as the south, albeit the northern edge has more trees, and is creating more shade and helping with plant growth and water retention. ✌🏾

    Thanks for sharing the development of your Earthship. I am curious to see it all complete. I am in a bit of a sand pit with rocks here in Australia with the land I purchased, so I am looking for ideas to incorporate in my design. I learned about the people of Easter Island using rocks on the slopes to slow water and allow for grasses to grow with sediment build up against the rocks. When we get in sync with the landscape we live on and decide to live harmoniously rather than attempt to dominate and control every aspect of the landscape to our own detriment, it shows in the landscape. Keep up the great work, the rain will keep coming to assist in showcasing your work.

    Aaaaaaah a wood mill, that will do the job. And rocks can be considered as mulch as well. Meaning that it protects micro organisms against UV light and most of the heat and water evaporation. At least slightly better as bare sand. And that makes a big difference in terms of plant available nutrients for the plants that is converted by the micro organisms from surrounding bio mass. Shade, temperature, moisture and less changing conditions for the micro organisms is a big thing in the desert. 👍

Also, I think your building will work really well. I grew up in an adobe home and it's true that that they are warmer in the winter (only needs one or two small heaters) and cooler in the summer. The one thing I would worry about is the insects that could start working there was through your walls. What my dad did was cover the inside walls with plaster (white), and a covered the outside with small chicken wire and then a concrete plaster that to this day is still standing and not too cracked! Good luck!

    I'll trade info for info, do a video explaining the granta and the process it took to get them.
    I've been greening my own little chunk of desert since 2021 with no grants or income at all.. so the Northside probably gets the most houra of shade, the trees here are distributed in a pattern such that depending upon time of year the shade from other trees shade the younger trees further from thw source of shade(they seem to match trees on the mountains ridges a mile an half away that cast sunset/rise shadows during winter when the sun is lowest on the horizon riding the mountain tops.
    On the other side of the hill it's north side is in the shade of trees growing on a ridge out towards the point of the cliff formations.. so in summery both of my northern most sides of the mountain are greener and keep their leaves longer into the year (cherry trees) it's same type forest as you have Juniper and Pine with berries and fruit along with either edible or medicinal planta dispersed throughout. Enjoying the water management videos and curious about the grants available for being sustainable

      @@GrowTreeOrganics Trees are amazing! Eight years ago while hiking the Appalachian Trail I was lucky to witness something interesting. It was late afternoon when I arrived at the shelter and a dry spring. As this was the only water source I had to ration my water that night. Around midnight I was awakened by an intermittent sound I could not identify. An hour later I woke up again and realized the sound was running water. The spring had begun flowing so I climbed out of my sleeping bag and joyfully filled all my water bottles. When I got back home intrigued I researched what I had witnessed. What I found was in very sunny hot and dry weather the trees would be pulling a lot of water (Transpiration) up to their leaves. At night as the air cools they would be pulling (Transpiring) in less water allowing the excess to again flow into the spring. 🤣this was a long way of saying I agree with you that trees do a lot. ☮

    I may have missed the episode where you talked about this, but what is the plan for the roof? My guess would be that the North side gets less full sun throughout the year, it also appears to be more sloped adding some protection from wind (less drying of plant material), and you may have a different soil type that allows for more water infiltration rather than runoff, all this combined might create a slightly less hostile growing environment. This is just a guess from watching your videos, and the maps and wakarounds you have shown us!

      You'll have to wait and find out on the roof! I haven't explained that yet!✌🏾😅

      @@GrowTreeOrganicsmy roof is a steeply pitched corrugated galvanized steel that could collect enough rain water to serve a small city. In northern New Mexico where I lived for many years the territorial house design is with this type roof flat roofs are worthless I know I had one they leak for thing rain capture is poor and putting a cistern on top will collapse your house . I live in a community now with less rain than where you are no water storage for the community and two creeks to serve the town when they are not dry we know how to capture rain water . If you can find a redwood tank a big one use it for rain capture then you can float in it ours was 5000 gallons . I’m an original counter culture non hippie who lived the off grid life before the internet and solar panels we used passive solar only designed our homes to suit the environment for natural air conditioning .

    The north side of your property might be north facing if the center of your property is a high point, which would shade the north side from the sun and evaporation more than the south side? This is true for northern hemisphere.

      That would be the case but the area is just about all the same topography except for the westward slope overall at maybe 5 degrees. ✌🏾
