  • On the 3rd of August 1979, one of my favorite albums was released, Talking Heads "Fear of Music". This video synchs footage from the 1979 South Bank Show Documentary on Talking Heads, to Air from the Fear of Music album.
Much of the Fear of Music album was recorded at Chris Frantz's and Tina Weymouth's apartment. On April 22 and May 6, 1979, a mobile recording van, manned by a sound engineering crew, parked outside Chris and Tina’s apartment, and ran cables through their loft window. On these two days, Talking Heads recorded the basic tracks for the album, with Brian Eno co-producing.
I was curious to know if the apartment where the band rehearse in the 1979 The South Bank Show Documentary on Talking Heads, is the same one they recorded Fear of Music. In 2019, I asked Chris Frantz:
    • Nacho: Hi Chris, the Southbank Show documentary, shot in August 1979, I believe. Is it where the album was recorded; Tina and yours apartment?
    • Chris: “Yes. This is the loft where Tina and I lived and the band rehearsed at 9-01 44th Drive in Long Island City New York. We recorded FEAR OF MUSIC there using the Record Plant Mobile.”
    • Nacho: I assumed that was so, thanks for confirming, Chris. I guess you must have had very tolerant neighbors?
    • Chris: Yes we did.
This is my third (and final) video edited from the brilliant 1979 Talking Heads Southbank Show documentary. Everything about the doc is great - the intelligent interviews, the lighting and photography, and especially the footage of the band playing live and in rehearsal.
In the documentary, the performance of Air is incomplete and moreover, most of the music is obscured by talking. Since the band are rehearsing a track from Fear of Music, in the very same space they recorded it just a few months prior, this video just had to happen… And the intro is a tribute to Chris and Tina’s very tolerant neighbors!
Thanks for watching, I hope you dig it!

I don't know about "Pets," or which side of the fence you are on but I interpret the lyrics of "Air" as the perspective of a hypochondriac or germaphobe. I've read David Byrne has shown symptoms of autism and even schizophrenia, both conditions known for (but not necessarily defined by) irrational thoughts, attitudes, and fears.
I guess from that angle, I agree

A very brilliant re-edit of the TH South Bank Show's bits and bobs into an excellent video for "Air". Tacking on the "Fear of Music" radio ad at the end was especially inspired.
As for the South Bank doc, it really is a great way to get to know the band at that time, and see glimpses into what they would become. I also noticed how Warholian DB's conversational style was, almost a studied banality with a hint of folksie charm. Was that a post NYC affect or was it his pre-established persona.

Who does David Byrne mention at the beginning? Sounds like he says Kurt Vile but considering he was born in 1980, I'm guessing that's not right, haha.

Im not sure if this is what you were asking about but I’m pretty sure during the documentary that this comes from that they actually put on the fear of music record (that they had literally just released) because they were trying to learn all of their parts to play live at their upcoming tour. You can see the fear of music record sleeve leaning up against the bookcase next to the record player.
