Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Brentford goalkeeper David Raya, despite Aaron Ramsdale signing a new long term contract recently.
Is Mikel Arteta really just looking to create competition for places? Or could Raya replace Ramsdale between the sticks for the Gunners?

The reason Ramesdale's form dipped near the end of the season could be down to his partner having a misscariage after the WC, stats are great but there's always real life factors to consider. Great video!
without taking anything away that very reasonable point to note. this is an reason why a potentially elite goalkeeper is needed... could awake a Champions league level player in Ramsdale
Never knew this, could definitely have had an impact
Nobody cares about when a United player goes through something traumatic in their personal life resulting in a dio in form. They just get shat on by the media and rivals without any look into why the dip has happened.
Get used to it.
@@MemesOfProduction69 If that’s true that’s unacceptable, but just because it happened to others doesn’t mean Ramesdale doesn’t deserve some empathy
You let the cat out of the bag at the very start.. The problem is..
Iñaki Caña Pavón.. he came in from Brentford when Arteta took over.. Bernd Leno’s form dipped considerably, almost immediately..
Staff were complaining about Caña's comptence then..!!
Then in came his 'first protège'..
summer signing Icelander
Alex Runarsson.. an immediate failure.. and soon relegated to
No 3 keeper's place.. Arteta camouflaged this serious mistake by buying Mat Ryan in the winter window..!! SO not only did Caña see-off Wenger's long held choice Emi Martínez.. but a year later Leno too.. and now it will be
Aaron Ramsdale.
Alex Runarsson trained under Caña in Denmark's
FC Nordsjælland for at least 3 seasons, enough time for Caña to imagine he could cut it in the PL..? The joke gets worse.. Runarsson is still on Arsenal's books(probably because of a good contract.. but has been out on loan for 2 full seasons..in 2 different leagues Belgium & Turkey.. .i.e. they can't get rid of him..)
Caña do it..?? Caña do it again..??
And again..?? Caña..??
So Raya will sign today.. Ryan is off to Sherwood.. and if City dominate and or humiliate Arsenal today.. Ramsdale will lose his spot.. And the worst thing about Raya is.. he's a real madrid supporter.. and will use Arsenal as a stepping stone to get there..
Shame. on you Caña..
From Cataluña on top of all that..
One of the prettiest Arsenal kits. The blue and yellow works so lovely together.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Arteta brought in 6’4 havertz and claims he is perfect for an out-ball if necessary, and now he’s pushing for raya who excels at long passing. The pass map showed he passed the ball to the far left side of the pitch, which coincidentally is where Kai will mostly take up positions. Clearly arteta wants many solutions for problems, even if that’s going long, just like city did against them with haaland last season.

An over-looked quality. As soon as he came in you could sense a boost of confidence from the defence.

It doesn't always help, we saw Henderson at United. Two equally good goal keepers will not necessarily mean both improving each other, keepers need games for confidence.
@@rameezm23henderson at utd wasn’t a case of two goalkeepers at the same level. despite poor footwork de gea was exceptionally important to utd still staying in the top half. henderson is certainly a good keeper, good enough that he wasn’t happy with backing up but he was not on the level that de gea was

@@jamiebowden300 agreed but he kind of regressed staying as backup and less game time at United when he Ideally needed more games to build his confidence. Was exceptional at Sheffield u. Ramsdale and Raya together will only materialise if they have a United like run of staying in all the 4 competions until the end.
@@rameezm23 Its not even equally good keepers. If they are remotely close in ability there will be problems. Ramsdale simply won't want to play second fiddle to Raya. He would most likely want to leave. Keepers aren't like outfield players. There isn't squad rotation for the most part and keepers don't get injured much. They aren't competing for one of 2 or 3 positions. You don't sub your keeper off in the 70th minute for fresh legs.
ramesdale has had immense moments though, that save vs utd when we were 2-1 up, the multiple saves vs Liverpool from salah. Although he has made a few mistakes which have cost the team

I love Ramsdale and I know it’s preseason, but so many times in these friendly’s have I seen him boot the ball out of bounds or miss his target by a lot
Arteta is seeing Ramsdale's progeessive dip in form since he first arrived and he is being proactive. Ramsdale was very good first season for Arsenal and since then his stats have gone down and he has made little to no improvement.

Love what Ramsdale has brought to the club but to the eye test, he's a bit slow on low shots, esp to his right. Raya would bring great competition to say the least
Absolutely convinced that Arteta has his eyes fixed on the Champions League! But man, that blunder he committed against Sporting Lisbon at our home ground during the Europa League still gives me shivers 😅
What crazier it that the media and fans were saying the Europa league wasn’t important and that Arsenal were only focused on the pl… and they still lost the pl 😂
I'm not the world's biggest Ramsdale fan, but that wasn't a blunder at all.
The whole point of GK positioning is to minimise the highest % route to goal. The most likely route to goal at that moment was a through ball leading to a one-on-one
Let's say there was a 5% chance of conceding to a one-on-one if Ramsdale had stayed back in a position where the chance of being lobbed was essentially 0. And let's say by stepping out to anticipate the through ball he reduced the chance of conceding to a one-on-one to 2.5%, whilst also increased the chance of being lobbed to 2.5% - he may have opened up a new route to goal but he effectively halved the chance of conceding a goal full stop; you can only concede 1 goal per chance after all (Runarsson: "hold my beer")!
It was just a phenomenal finish that's all. And frankly I don't want a keeper who hides by refusing to put themselves in positions that could result in them being criticised by people who don't understand the position, even if it means them concede more frequently
This is genuinely the most entertaining and fun football content. We're looking at data, which we love. But you guys are so good at making it fun and easy to digest. It's not as easy as you guys make it look.
You should do a show with the (or a) goalkeeper coach just reviewing saves and misses. The friend insight bit was great
Basically what I saw from Ramsdale is that he doesn't get down quick enough but I'm not an arsenal fan so i don't watch all the games though so it might be less an issue than I think
Personally I've never been convinced by the idea that competition for places gets the best out of goalkeepers. It's such a high pressure position, and to pull it off you need a hell of a lot of confidence, as well as the confidence of your teammates - especially in possession teams where keepers often have to try risky manoeuvres, you don't want them having to worry about losing their place over a mistake.
I've still massively come round to this move though. Ramsdale is clearly a lovely guy and a good goalkeeper, it's still probably our weakest position relative to our big rivals, when you consider the calibre of keeper they're working with (Alison, Ederson, & Onana). I'm not sure if Raya is quite in their league but I'm pretty sure he's closer than Ramsdale.
@@jamiestewart48 I mean I’m basing my assessment on him on what people I know who watch Serie A say -I don’t watch it myself- but I’d be delighted if you’re right!
Think the point still stands wrt Allison and Ederson in any case though.
Couldn't agree more. GK is a unique position, with unique level of pressure - your number one needs support not more stress. I can't think of an example where having two competing keepers who are very evenly matched has worked. Whoever is out of the yeam will also be very unhappy. Also no way Raya signs as the number 2. One presumes, as others have said, one if them, probably Ramsdale, will move on next season. They are both too good to sit on the bench.
Raya's ability with the ball would add to Arsenal's unpredictability. Ramsdale is a very good GK, but his ability to put long balls doesn't seem very good. I mean, if the opposing team is pressing high, I would love to have a GK who can put a precise long ball. instead of a risky short pass. It gives Arteta more options.
Wouldn't be surprised if Arteta played the 2 of them in a inverting GK role where either Keeper stands between the posts
😂😂😂😂
Reminds me of Joe Hart at Man City. Ruthless, but a sign that standards are rising.
Hart was a borderline top 5 GK in the world at his best, completely different situation.
@@raveninnsbruck9166 and Raya isn't that good.
I think competition is the main factor here. If Ray is the better keeper, then great, we've got a better keeper. But even if Ramsdale keeps the majority of the starts, the competition will make him a better keeper. You're likely going to get an improvement in your first choice keeper either way, so it's win win.
Or you cause friction and create a bad dressing room. It's unlikely you'd settle for being number 2 at that age after establishing yourselves for several seasons as number 1. (though Kepa did do it for a while).
I love Ramsdale and I think he will be part of our squad for many years and has the potential to be one of the best but you're right, Turner doesn't really provide much competition for him so he's probably taken his foot off the gas a bit. Having two elite GKs for UCL and PL is an amazing transfer plan
It's not so much that he's better than Ramsdale, but he's better than Turner by a wide margin. They need competition, but they need two quality keeps for all the matches they will have this season.
He is better than ramsdale it's easy as that
No one buys 40 million reserve keeper. Not even Saudis 😂. One will go in a season 2 at very most. Odds are Raya wi s the battle. He thinks he will or he would come.
Arteta is buying another goalie because Ramsdale is complacent, he makes silly mistakes but he also has moments of brilliance. There is very little between them now, Raya is probably slightly better now but Ramsdale has a higher ceiling and is younger. In a year or two years time, either Raya or Ramsdale will move on. If Ramsdale wins the battle he'll be a much better keeper because of the competition. Either way, Arsenal win because they can sell one for a good fee.
All of Rayas stats will drop if he moves to Arsenal, he will not be facing as many shots, he will not be on the ball as much, he will not have Toney winning the ball for him bumping up his stats, although Havertz will help here.
Havertz is a terrible target player aerially .... It's way better to feed him through ground where he can pass and be mobile faster and better.
Yeah that's my main concern too, also Raya in a couple of years will have limited resale value at 30, especially if he hasn't managed to displace Ramsdale as first choice since the richer clubs will be hesitant to splash for him
@@ChatmakGamesthe only way this makes any sense, is if arsenal agrees to part ways with 40mill just for a second choice goal keeper
Seems Iike a poor use of money
@@tnix80who needs to balance the books when you have oil sponsors and UCL to look forward to? ;)
Best analysis of this goalkeeper debate I've seen, nice work!
I think Ramsdale's ceiling is higher than Raya's but Raya could well prove to be better in the present(playing for Arsenal is a higher standard than Brentford so as good as Raya is we can't be 100% sure that he can cope). I don't think Raya will be thrown into the starting 11 straight away, but I wouldn't be surprised if he emerges as the clear No.1 over the course of the next year or two.
The good thing for us(Arsenal) is that we can probably push his price down (if the player pushes for a move Brentford might sell for 30 million instead of 40 ) and we're in a position to get decent fees for Turner and Runarsson so that effectively makes Raya a bargain. The added benefit is that even if one clear "winner" emerges between the two, the other will still be worth good money so we probably will also get good resale value.
Surely being a keeper for Brentford is tougher than for Arsenal though
@@C-RENITYnot in terms of expectation and pressure
This makes a lot of sense to me. We all love Rambo but he could do with stronger competition than Turner and Raya would offer that. We need options in defence to win the big games. People talk about us needing a striker, but the stats last season show that we didn't really struggle for goals, they came from all over the park, and unless we are incredibly unlucky with injuries that probably should continue.
Thank you for your incredible work (you and all your pals, team) !! I see you from Chile... And I understand everything!!
You make great vids, I always enjoy them.
Just have to say in regards of Ramsdale being mid-table/PL average over the past 2 seasons doesn't make him "Really good, it's a very high level".
It makes him average and average doesn't win titles.
Look what PEP did with Hart, Klopp did with his CL final "clanger machine", upgraded him with Allison and we all know how that changed the team, if we want to win big trophies he has to be upgraded too.
tbf you cannot blame ramsdale as to why we drew with liverpool as without him playing amazingly for the last 15-20 mins we wouldve lost that game for sure
I don't really get it because neither of the 2 are going to want to be a backup
Tbf in the 2-2 game against Liverpool, Ramsdale was one of our best players. The only reason we didn’t lose was him.
As much as it pains me to say, Raya will be coming in as #1 and Ramsdale will be his backup for FA Cup, League Cup and early stages of Champion’s League games. Just makes perfect sense.
Ramsdale is very good but Raya is better and to win the league you need an excellent keeper who exudes calm. Raya can be the Saliba of the GK position. Ramsdale more on the Gabriel level if you compared him to our CBs. Very good but not quite a Rolls Royce, still has a mistake in him.
That’s why I also see Gabriel’s position as upgradeable but with Saliba next to him and Kiwior supporting, I think we are good at CB.
Thanks for this video I saw the news and was absolutely baffled earlier today
4:29 love the Larry David reference!
keep the videos coming video man
So much interesting ! Could you make a video to compare the top goalkeepers to try to define who is the best goalkeeper in the world.
Its like Bane once said - "Peace has cost you your strength, victory has defeated you".
Ramsdale has been unchallenged for so long, he has become lax and makes simple error that he should be saving. Raya is here to be Bane lmao
I feel save percentage for top teams gk's is always a bit misleading as the chances they are facing are often fast paced counters v slower build up where the keeper will have defenders covering certain areas of the goal so they can concentrate on the danger zones. xG helps a bit but doesnt completely balance it out
If Arsenal practiced this sort of goalkeeper performance review every season during Almunia's time, Arsenal would've won more than they did. Until today I still do not understand how Almunia kept his place despite giving horrendous performance every game.
I'm a Spurs fan, and no huge fan of Ramsdale, but other than that early Southampton goal, he's been stellar for Arsenal. Basically Arsenal struggled with defensive injuries at the end of the last two seasons that I think have far more of a impact for the goals that Arsenal started to leak when they trailed off at the end of both years. I do know Raya is really well thought of, but I can't help thinking this might actually hurt team morale. I have never been really convinced that having two elite goalkeepers really works as competition in a squad.
You actually say it pretty fairly and objectively for a Spurs fan commenting on an Arsenal player. As an Arsenal fan, I agree 100% with your comment.
I'm a blades fan, and a lot of Blades fans never rated Ramsdale, and TBF the first couple of months in our worst ever season he was POOR, but our defence was an absolute shambles, so hardly his fault, and it was his really big improvement that led to us ending up not even coming close to breaking Derby's record (yet, at least, there's always this season).
However even I, who thought he was good for us, have been surprised at how good he's been for arsenal. His size (6'3ish) might make someone think he'll play in an old fashioned way, but his distribution and his feet are, NORMALLY, absolutely excellent, which he never got to show for us.
I feel like his drop off late last season was a symptom of the whole squad declining, and some important defensive injuries
@@CrayTomhe was right nonetheless
@@wolfgangbailey3730besides the way we play(keeping a highline) means most times ramsdale is often left on his own to defend against counter attacks, something we haven't seen raya do

You’ve convinced me, at first I wasn’t keen on Ramsdale being replaced…but the stats don’t lie. Hope we bring Rays in now, lol.
1:25 ah yes the 12nd percentile
Arteta's plan seems clear. Have a team that you can't prepare against. Havertz adds a height dynamic, Raya can find his target over the press at an elite level. Arteta is adding another layer to very dynamic system which has been shown by how chaotic and different every preseason game has been.
As an Arsenal fan I have not seen any improvement in Ramsdale since he came here. To be honest I thought his first 6 months at the club was the best he has had but since I think his level has dropped considerably compared to the first 6 months. Too many times I see a goal go in and say Ramsdale should have saved it either because the ball was close enough to him or he gets a hand to the ball that goes in. Also mistakes have started creeping into his game in terms of distribution and shot stopping
Whilst im a Utd fan. I will remind you that Ramsdale had the second highest high claims of the big 6 last season. Can't lie, part of me hopes you dont get Raya for selfish reasons.
I dont know if people notice this....Ramsdale panics when having the ball and kicks long balls aimlessly. He plays like he is under extreme pressure from nowhere. His distribution is questionable
Crazy how stats changes things.
Thanks for explaining this for me Arteta will not settle that's a very very good thing
I love Ramsdale but too me he always looked like a keeper that goes for flashy saved instead for correct ones
That kit😭😵
It's killing my eyes
Thank you for getting a goalkeeper coach in to explain what's going on. Personally, I prefer Ramsdale, his attitude is brilliant and I think one overlooked stat is that a good goalkeeper is part of a defensive unit that keeps an xGC low
Ironic that on the stats for PL goalkeepers, one Leno of Fulham is ranked 2nd over the last 2 seasons (1:55)
Wonder were Fulham got their keeper from?
I think a lot of people don’t understand the numbers, stats are being used wrong in prem?
@anthony6800 Completely agree. I just found it very surprising to see him second in the list. Doubt anyone would guess Leno for that in stats.
@anthony6800don't you think that's because we take more risks and play a highline, bringing in a raya could be no different to having leno
@anthony6800 brentford are holding out for 40mill, that's why spurs didn't sign him. Ramsdale has a pass completion of 64.03%, while raya has a pass completion of 60.65%, so raya being a better passer of the ball is a myth
As a gooner I feel that English gooners over hype Ramsdale cause he is English! makes the occasional photo save, is a brave sweeper and a good penalty box presence! Never felt like he is very good, he is ok/good imo, Leno was a better shot stopper then him but Ramsdale is better at playing with his feet but far from being great at it! Many goals we conceded I felt either Ramsdale was too slow to react or his positioning was off, he is also prone to making mistakes like the Bruno Fernandez goal or the Europa league goal we conceded that the ball was so slow but Ramsdale made a meal of it(can't remember against which team) point is Ramsdale has been on my fraud watch for a good while glad we are at least planning on giving him decent competition.
Can he be overrated because he’s English even through he’s more rated than a better English keeper?
Does it make sense for a club to have competition in all positions in a top squad? I can see the appeal for outfield positions but not necessarily for GKs, where stability and reliability is more important, and those attributes are better facilitated with long term experience in a squad.
Arsenal also lost Saliba and Zinchencho at the end of the year, which I would assume would help explain (some of) Ramsdale's drop off.
It’s a hockey thing. Arteta has talked about the influence he’s gotten from his American sports coach group chat. In hockey you sometimes have goalie tandems, in fact a lot of the best teams have 2 quality goalies.
I suppose. But being a soccer goalie has hardly any of the wear and tear that being a hockey goalie does. Especially once you consider practice time.
Can't see Ramsdale not bringing bad vibes to the dressing room if canned.
Well, at least we’ll have depth. I feel for Turner, though; don’t think he’s too far off of Ramsdale’s level and he only just signed, lol.
Quality video!!!
Ramsdale is still very young for a PL goalkeeper and unexpectedly took Leno's spot ahead of time. If Raya comes in he will be No. 1 very soon but Ramsdale shouldn't be disheartened, time is on his side and he will improve to top level by learning from Raya.
Best sense I can make of it: Ramsdale's concentration levels seem to dip towards the end of the season...and now they have Champion's League as well. To get a big trophy, they need to take a bit of pressure off Ramsdale.
It's a bit of a gamble. Ramsdale is a big personality; and players don't usually reward disloyalty. Bringing the the goalkeeping coach's favourite might not send out the best signals...
If ramsdale can’t take the competition he should leave. We are not a charity can’t be worrying about players feelings. Step up or step out
I feel like the only goalkeeper stat that really tells you anything concrete is Psxgot-gc and it also should be looked at over several seasons.
Just like how measuring if a player is a good finisher or not based on one season gs-xg is often misleading or doesn’t fit the traditional narrative when isolated.
Tifo is by far the best football analysis channel
Funny how video shows ramsdale is somewhat average but jj keeps saying he's "good". The arsenal delusion is setting in on jj as soon as he put on the jersey

It's 12th not 12nd btw. Don't wanna be that guy but I feel compelled to point that out
@@bluebros.7266yeah agreed thats was sad
I'm just not sure I put all that much faith in top line GK stats as I do in outfield players. When it comes to goalkeepers I really do think that vibes only is not an unreasonable approach to take.
Finally someone spot on Ramsdale cost Arsenal the title. Arteta taking a leaf out of Pep again changing keeper fast
You make that yellow kit even better than it is sir
9:15 Bro couldn’t resist😭
Also important to note which team would be experiencing moments of play where the goalkeeper can excel. These stats are very manipulative
Strange to being up the Liverpool game as a dip in performance when it was Ramsdale’s best GK performance
Ramsdale has some good instincts to make insane stops, but it seems that he suffers more in situations where he has more time and then gets caught trying to make a decision. It can probably be coached out of him but competition is good. If Raya comes and takes his spot, he ca still improve and take it back. And if he's unable to, well then Arsenal has made an improvement to their side.
Worth stating that xG is not designed well for GKs. Take that City game: City had an xG of 2.5, so Ramsdale gets a -1.5 xG performance, but if you look at expected saves which is designed for keepers, Ramsdale made 5 vs an expected 5.5.
By those Stats Kepa is the 3rd best keeper in the PM behind Alisson and Leno. So Leno is better than Ramsdale although you say Ramsdale improved Arsenal. These numbers are useless xD
Arteta spent a few years building a club of young players who were tight knit. I feel like this is a move similar to the move to replace Smith Rowe with Odegard or supplant Tierney with Zinchenko. Arteta is a bit too ruthless in his transfer policy and because they refuse to sell players. And these players who's paths have been blocked by incoming. They may end up with an unhealthy culture. Competitive slips into paranoid pretty easily.
If this goes through who is the #1? It seems weird as fk that ramsdale would just be #2 and why would he stay on if that happened. On the flip side why would raya leave brentford to sit on the bench?
Both Class Goalkeepers
I was really hoping that Sam was going to present this video, given how he would have the inside scoop, being so closely related to Aaron.
In the cold light of day this isn't even an average comment, I've let myself down
5:02 How was the Liverpool 2-2 game Ramsdale's fault?? He keep the point for Arsenal in that game.
would be great for raya to help compete and help teach rambo (esp if it it’s technical improvement).
They tried this before with Martinez and Ospina.. didn't work. You don't get a group of top keepers to cannibalize themselves. Hopefully Ramsdel finds a way out
If I recall correctly Raya was Arteta target from the very beginning, Arsenal just couldn’t get him for whatever reason
Correct. IIRC Brentford had newly been promoted that season.
It all makes sense but I'd be sad for either of them not to be first choice because I love them for different reasons. I just feel it more sense to prioritise transfers in other positions now for the amount they Brentford (rightly) want. If Ramsdale is susceptible to injury in a way that we don't know about, or if they genuinely want to make him number 2 to Raya, go for it, but otherwise he deserves another season to iron out those errors and lift his game. We know he has the drive already to win his team games, let him show it with another season.
All very well saying Ramsdale tailed off when the pressure was on, we now know what the issues where in his life. More importantly Raya is unproven in a similar pressure situation. It's easy to look good in a club like Brentford when there isn't as much focus on everything you do.
Leno is actually a good shot stopper but all round goalkeeping like passing out from the back, he is a little shot
Ramsdale performs ridiculously better away than at home because of the stimulation levels. I actually think we may rotate keepers. Does anyone remember Diego Lopez and Casillas playing lights out competing with one another?
Both ADHD and goalkeepers age like wine. I really hope we don’t get rid of him. And I’m fairly certain it isn’t the plan.
We’re taking the opportunity on selling our backup keeper for relatively big money. We’re really going to spend a little less than but around £20m in net transfer fees to upgrade keeper depth if you offset it with the Turner sale, who we’ll HAVE to replace
Raya was always going into his last year this summer, and Ramsdale’s contract wasn’t running down AND was on a lower salary. If simply upgrading ramsdale with Raya was something they would’ve wanted, it’s something they could’ve easily done with an even smaller net spend before resigning ramsdale. We wouldn’t get full value for ramsdale, but certainly more than Matt Turner
Ramsdale will be 2nd choice if raya comes in.
Gotta defend Ramsdale in the Southampton game a bit, Holding wasn't waiting for it, he was pointing to Zinchenko
competition is crucial at every position for a premier league contender
This guy seems like a fun guy to have a beer with.
Has anyone noticed how this summer all youtubers, channels, radio stations have absolutly pumped out the the rumour mill content? THEY HAVE TO CHURN OUT CRAP JUST TO MAINTAIN INCOME! relax, enjoy the downtime..get back into football when the season begins again!
Goalkeepers are so hard to judge apart from each other in skill. The only goalkeeper that i ever truly felt needed replacing was loris karius in the last 10 years. I watched that final live, and as unfortunate as it was... that was an unforgivable performance.
For goalies... having another good goalie behind you doesnt lead to competition but confusion imo
